Bandai Will Stop Shipping Anime to Retailers In November
Ken Iyodomi, who is the president of Bandai Entertainment, sent us over a letter this morning to give us a heads up on what we've known has been coming and just never had a date for.

He writes:
"I am writing to inform you that Bandai Entertainment Inc in discontinuing its home video publishing and distribution business effective March 1, 2013.

As we methodically wind down the business, the last day that Bandai will be accepting any purchase orders is November 15, 2012, with our last shipments occurring on November 30th, 2012.

On Behalf of Bandai Entertainment Inc, I want to express our gratitude for the opportunity we've had to do business with your company, and I think you in advance for your understanding and assistance during this period."
Well, we all knew this was coming up. While Bandai's remaining catalog of Anime release will 'officially' go out of print in November, I just want to remind everyone that quite a few of their SKU's have already stocked out and others will probably sell out prior to the Nov cutoff, so if you need to pull the trigger on any of their stuff, don't wait too much longer.

This also means that current backorders for existing products are less likely to be filled, but we will do whatever we can to bring in as much Bandai stock as we can afford to between now and November.
via RACS
Several people have written in a little confused about Bandai's announcement last week that they will stop shipping to retailers in November. Most people want to know "what's going to happen to all their titles"? We'll here's the deal - effective Nov of this year everything in Bandai's DVD and BD catalog will officially go out of print (as will their entire selection of manga in October). Bandai has said they intend to shop some of these licenses out, but that process is likely to be slow and their back-catalog is just way to big to be absorbed into the market by the rest of the industry as it stands, so while it's likely that a few of the premium licenses will eventually end up getting re-released by someone else (hey Sentai, please pick up K-On season 1, OK?), I imagine most of their catalog will simply go dark. Now that doesn't mean that all their releases will just vaporize in November - retailers like us are currently scrapping together as much money as we can find to do big final buy-ins on Bandai's remaining stock, and at least for us, we're hoping to stock some of their titles pretty deep assuming we can get them. Over the next 6-12 months I would expect prices to rise for OOP Bandai titles that end up getting bought up quickly and become a little harder to find. This will, of course, result in the same bitching and moaning characterizing any price increases as greed and averice from the usual suspects who couldn't be bothered to pull the trigger on these titles for the many years they were available at the regular prices. Oh joy, I can't wait to read those people comments! :) But I also expect prices to decrease for a time on the titles that retailers choose poorly on and end up bringing in too much stock.

And before you ask, I have no idea what will become of Gundam - that series is an awfully big bite for another studio to try to take on. I fear the chances now that we'll ever see ZZ, Victory, or Turn a Gundam released in R1 are now pretty slim. ~sigh~

Anyway, we're going to go through the site during for the next couple of weeks and mark all Bandai releases as 'discontinued - limited to stock on hand' and also we'll be publishing a list shortly of all in stock Bandai titles so that you can see if there is anything you need before the lights go out in November.
A terrible ending is different than no ending. Claymore did have an ending, even if it may not have satisfied people. Deadman Wonderland, for example, didn't have an ending, since the manga is still ongoing.

You mention Princess Jellyfish. The Funimation guys mentioned at a con that they were hoping to spark some popularity to get more produced, but in this market I doubt something like that would happen.
Well I suppose thiers always hope that the animation studios might pick them up when the mangas end. I have hope that someday Princess Jellyfish will have the ending it rightfully deserves as well. Seeing as inuyasha got its ending after some years of being in limbo, the thought doesnt seem impossible.

well i dont know how popular princess jellyfish is(never heard of it) but inuyasha is quite popular. its easily in the top 5 most popular animes outside of japan....well ok in the 2-5 range cause well nothing is ever likely to dethrone the all mighty dbz

seems odd that season 2 dried up faster than season 1 of gundam 00 might cancel my gundam 00 season 1 order if i cant get season 2 hmmm
seems odd that season 2 dried up faster than season 1 of gundam 00 might cancel my gundam 00 season 1 order if i cant get season 2 hmmm
I just dont know how it can dry up right now so quick either. Isnt Bandai taking retailer orders till November 15?

just because they say they are does not mean they actually are....if a company is going under or drastically downsizing their cash flow is poor. printing discs and cases costs money. if cash flow is low they are likely on a limited budget for this stuff.

so unless a retailer specifically says give me 100 copies they aren't going to waste time doing it and even then due to a low cash flow a retailer requesting said 100 copies does not guarantee it will happen.

if a company downsizes drastically or goes under or is preparing for this the amount of orders they take plummets. they still have to pay people, have to deal with people quiting, and have to deal with less and less customers....this creates less business hours which is fine as they are ya know going under or various places are shutting down and they are downsizing. so another way of looking at it is the manpower is getting shrunken greatly well before november 15th....if it takes 100 people for example to print 100 discs well one must figure at least half of those are going to quit soon or already have....your production ability is then shot in half.

i'd also imagine bandai is the process of selling licenses of various animes or working on that.

its a tough gamble but i'd to think gundam is likely to get some more orders in it seems like it would being as it is one of the more popular shows unless gundam season 2 has been OOP for a while now and is just finally had all its stock used up

i'd say keep it....if it looks bad return it during your return window
I just ordered season 2 of Gundam 00 from Rightstuf, so it is not quite sold out yet.
Rightstuf says:
Product Availability - More Arriving Soon! (More Information)

So are you sure it is ordered or are you just registered for a backorder?

Its said More arriving soon for a long time so its definitely just backordered for him. I would have to think they will be removing the listing soon, since all the other websites started doing so a few weeks ago.
I picked up a copy of it early this year for $5, a very random find.
If was one of the most random things I've seen. Picked up about 2ish years ago. Along with the other $5 anime they had.

I wish some of these titles would last long enough till November(My Birthday) so I can get them. Gundam 00, Eureka Seven, and Gurren Lagann I am worried about getting since the first 2 having their second season in the may have hit OOP already and Gurren Lagann may have hit OOP. This sucks.
Now I have to buy the entire Gundam Wing series. fuck.
Thats on my list of Bandai Anime to get too.

I skipped on Eureka Seven because I know Funimation has Ao and it would only make sense for them to grab the original too.
I skipped on Eureka Seven because I know Funimation has Ao and it would only make sense for them to grab the original too.
I hoping Funi gets alot of Bandai's licenses.

Well I guess it finally time to bite.

I shall finally buy The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Season 2. I know over all it was a bad release.... But it at least has 7 good episodes.... That only 6 dollars an episode.
I skipped on Eureka Seven because I know Funimation has Ao and it would only make sense for them to grab the original too.
I realized this too, but I thought it was still worth picking up the Bandai release for the extras that may not show up in Funimation's "hypothetical" re-release such as translated Japanese voice actor commentaries and Voice Actor Interviews.

Might end up buying most of my Bandai Stuff at the Over Priced Anime Store. But if prices jump way way up, I'm likely to change my mind.
Why is everything going OOP now when the cutoff date is still 2 months off?
Because everyone is buying everything right now. I feel like some places might be getting orders faster than they are receiving copies.
Because everyone is buying everything right now. I feel like some places might be getting orders faster than they are receiving copies.
Lets hope that is the case.

Yeap. People are just making a mad dash to get anything Bandai right now. Hopefully, that lets up in the future. Of course, we could be wrong on that. But we can hope.

Thats what im hoping for. I had planned on getting (between now and the end of November) the complete sets of G Gundam, Code Geass, Gundam Wing, Eureka Seven, Gundam 00, and Gurren Lagann. Hopefully Gurren Lagann and the Second halves of Gundam 00 and Eureka Seven come back in stock at a real value before the end of november.
The only thing I would have liked to get is The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Blu-ray but that's already demanding a ton of money.
that would be nice i was really impressed by how much i liked that anime.
Wtf even Hastings is out and there site has been down almost a week ...:bomb:
Gohastings.com is working for me, so if you're having trouble accessing their site, it's on your end.

Just looking at their site, pretty much what everyone has stated is OOS on other sites is in pretty much the same state on their site. Although Hastings has a horrible inventory system, so it could be in stock and listed under another name. It's happened to me multiple times, like recently with ordering You're Under Arrest: Mini-Specials and end up getting the "remastered version" of YUA: the Motion Picture, which was listed OOS at the time of ordering.

I am noticing that most of the stuff listed still has quite a few of the individual volume releases still available cheap(Gundam 00, Gurren Lagann). So if none of the collection sets get a reprint before November, those might be the cheapest possible way to obtain them any time soon.

They were down for a few days because their physical server hardware failed, but they went back up a day or two ago.

though nothing was as bad as the girl who leapt through time the second that sold out on blu ray the prices shot to 100 dollars.

Not as expensive as the stand alone Volume 11 that I lack. Average of 80 to 100 bucks is total crap. I may manage to snag it at some second hand place or pawn shop if I am lucky.
The girl who leapt through time is available on BD as a double pack with Summer Wars in the UK (about $31 shipped for both), but it's Region B locked. Not sure how the transfer there compares to the US one though. I may pick that up eventually but I'd rather get a Region A version

nice now if only i had a region free player lol

It is kinda sad to see them stop selling their shows. Was kinda hoping to see an Eureka 7 Blu-ray release (not the movie).

Also, found out I had extra copies of Eureka 7 volumes 8 and 9. Where did these come from?
nice now if only i had a region free player lol
Yea, I'd like to find a cheap one, so I could import some movies. An akira blu-ray is one of the ones I'd like to import.
