Beautiful Katamari - Gen. Discussion & Info

the fact that the content was ready pisses me off.
as i was reading this thread i was thinkign about stopping by frys on my way hoem and pickign it up.
then i see they already have dlc, that coupled with io's comments of game length really aggrevated me.
i wont be picking this up any time soon.

I think it would be awesome if they decided to release this originally at like $20 and then released this DLC seperately like they are, but $40 is too much for half a game that is essentially the same thing as a last-gen title that has been remade three times already.

my feelings exactly.

I'm a hardcore Katamari fan. After (I guess) beating this, here are my thoughts:

- Wow, was it short! I mean, most Katamari games don't take too long, and there's time attack and such, but there's only like 9 levels!

- They seemed to ramp up the difficulty to compensate for said shortness. That'd be okay, but this time the King's critiques really annoyed me. What a royal dick!

- The control/camera actually seems WORSE than the PS2 games. Your "quick turn" (moving the sticks in opposite directions) is a lot slow, and I more frequently was at points where I didn't know what the hell was going on.

- Multiplayer is kind of neat. The couple of stages were a little sparse, but it's varied and has a bit of competition to it.

- Navigating all those floating worlds is kind of annoying. I almost just want a nice menu: Pick your stage, pick your cousin, hop to it!

- Lots of pre-start loading time for this, but at least there's no mid-game loading.

I'm being a little negative, but realize that I adore Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari. So, even though I'm griping, I still enjoyed this quite a bit. However, I'd probably give it a 7 score if I was reviewing.
Some DLC went up:
No wonder I couldn't find the DLC on the MP, it now says "Asia only" on Major Nelson's site.
No wonder I couldn't find the DLC on the MP, it now says "Asia only" on Major Nelson's site.
WTF!? I guess he messed up then.

I was gonna say - I couldn't find it for the life of me and thought I was just doing something wrong .

Well, I'll add some more comments here. I pretty much agree with VL - only difference is I don't mind the floating worlds (the hub). And my kids really like that part.

The no loading times is a big improvement over the previous versions, too. I had forgotten about those. This game is much smoother as a result - you just keep going and the game scales quickly when you make a transition.

I believe there are 12 levels total (making 8 planets, a comet, a satellite, the sun, and the supergiant). Plus there's the tutorial level. I'll have to fire up the PS2 versions and see how long they are. But my guess is that they had 4-5 more levels to them - thus making about $10 of the DLC stuff that should have been in this game. I always said I would have been glad to download new levels for the other games and I feel the same here - I just wish there was the same amount of levels to start with. But I have to go back and see how much shorter it really is. Then again, I would have paid $50 for this and would have been happy if it was as long as We Love Katamari.

I'm working on getting 100 points on each level (and thus unlocking eternal mode in each one). I think I've managed to do it on 3 or 4 so far. That definitely extends the gameplay. There is also the time attack mode, which adds a bit of replayability.
Any tips on how to get 100 points on a level? I have recently found out I am not to good at this game.
It seems overwhelming at first, but the key is just to find pockets of stuff that are the correct size for you to pick up, but not too small they don't make much difference. You usually have to replay the levels several times to figure this out. The easiest one to get 100 on is probably the first one (not the tutorial, which is very easy to score 120 on, actually, but the first real one - the satellite I think). When you are on levels that have areas that open up make sure you hit those new areas as soon as you are able, otherwise you are picking up stuff that is too small.

I am absolutely horrible at doing dashes (both sticks back and forth). I know a lot of people say that is the key to getting 100's. But I managed to get them in a few levels without dashing at all. It is more important to find the correct route and keep moving.

you saw that all I was doing when we played online was dashing? That's the hardest move to do. it was easier in the PSP version since it was all buttons and no joysticks

Yeah, I was doing it a lot then too. It seemed easier in the online play to do it though. It is harder when you are trying to stick to a path in a regular level so you can keep on pace for 100 points. I'll try doing a dash and I'll accidentally click both sticks and end up getting turned around and THEN shooting off in the wrong direction. Online play is pretty much a dashing bash-fest though ;).

fuck no auto-save system, I turned it off yesterday after getting to the Black Hole level.

Ah well, at least the shit's fun.

I think dashing is harder the larger your katamari is, though I could be mistaken.

I'm having a tough time with the achievements for quick-turn, dashing, nonstop. Any advice?

Yes, in fact. A REALLY easy way to get the non-stop and responsible roller (no bumping into stuff) achievements is to do the time attack for the Saturn level. I did it in about 36 seconds. You start off big enough to pick up cars - just cruise down the middle of the road and you should be OK. There might be some larger trucks you need to avoid for the bumping achievement, but I got it without even trying on this one. My 4 year-old son was able to get the nonstop one on this level though!

As for the quick-turning, I think I got that one last night - not sure. I got 2 at the end of doing the Uranus level right before I went to bed and I think that was one of them. Basically just take any level where you have a lot of time, and do a whole bunch of flip turns. Someone in another forum said 50, but I think it might not need to be so many.

I haven't gotten the dashing one yet, but I would assume it is the same - just dash a bunch in an unlimited level.

Another slight disappointment with this game is that the achievements are actually a bit too easy. There are still those secret ones, though, and I can't find any info except for the 100 gamerpoint one, which I got last night. It has got to be the easiest 100 points there is:
Once you finish the game, just go through each level that allows time attacks and do them. You can't fail time attacks and you'll get the 100 points when you do the last one. Easy as pie.
. I was hoping there would be one for getting scores of 100 on each level - there may still be one like that in the secret ones...

Edit - I did get the quick turner one for doing all those flips... I also got the dashing one VERY early in the game and didn't even realize it. So just dash a bunch on one level and you'll get it. I doubt I really even dashed that much back when I was first playing through the game - yet I got it anyway at some point. That just leaves me to get the "losing stuff" (manic roller) achievement which I think means you have to smash enough stuff off your Katamari to go down a size level.

Also, there are still 5 unknown secret achievements (there are 6 total but one is described in my spoiler above) and I can't find any info on the web about them - very strange.

My game just came in from estarland today, so I'm about to crack it open and start playing. If any CAGs are up for some multiplayer, just add me to your friends list - gamertag is ihadFG.

That shouldn't be too hard if you try. As soon as you grow a level, just intentionally smash into a few things. This happened to me once on accident in We ♥ Katamari.

There's an even easier (albeit incredibly cheap) way to do it-- Get an eternal (by getting 100 points), and go into that level. Roll up one item. Quit. Shamefully easy :(

I was hoping there would be one for getting scores of 100 on each level - there may still be one like that in the secret ones...

Sadly not, a few people have done that and gotten no achievement.

The secret one we've seen icons for
has an icon with the king, royal rainbow, and 100 in it, so my suspicion is it'll be rolling up 100 katamaris/getting 100 royal rainbows.

I'm really looking forward to the DLC (bought points specifically knowing they're coming, and there is even more coming next week for Japan), I've already figured out which cousins are/will be downloadable, and some of my favorites are there.

If anyone's interested in knowing which ones will be DLC...
Honey
L'Amour
Can-Can
Drooby
Miki
Shy
Harvest
Kyun
Hans (I know he's available in the Asia-only pack at the moment because I've seen him on the leaderboards)
Pokkle (same)
Columbo
Princess (YAYYYYYYY)
Opeo

I'm personally getting more fun and time out of this $40 game than I have out of a huge number of my games I've paid $60 for even before DLC, but I am a complete katamari fangirl, after all, so it's to be expected. I even have two of the dashboard themes and swore to myself I'd never do that

D'oh! I figured said achievements would be disabled for eternal mode. So you can get the non-stop and responsible ones that way I guess ;). And you can use eternal to get the turning and dashing ones - just do it a bunch in each. They really should have limited those to normal levels where you have to finish the goal while doing those things as well - would have added a bit of challenge at least.
This is very disappointing especially given how easy the others are. But we still need to find out what the rest of the secret ones are. Maybe there's a tough one in there (that doesn't simply involve playing 1000 times or something stupid like that).
Someone on GameFAQS has the one for 40 pts, apparently it's playing the game for 50 hours.
50 hours so soon?! That's DIGUSTING!!

Aha, there is hope. There's a rumor that there may be an achievement for
getting all 120 scores (versus just the 100s). That'd be crazy tough, though. Some people aren't even sure it's possible on all of them but I'd fancy a guess if it's possible on one, it'll be possible on all.

edit: Doh, husband was logged in and I'm in a hurry.

I've never played Katamari before this game and it's definitely one of the more unique games I've ever seen. Pretty addictive, and I love the J pop played in the background - quite a different experience going from Halo 3 to BK in the same afternoon.

Well, that's insane. I've fought through several of the levels and just barely scratched out 100's. It seems I get exactly 100 no matter what - never have I even gotten 101. I just figured the 100 was the max possible (except for the Tutorial level for some reason). It just seems wierd that I'd get 100 and no more on the 6 or 7 levels I've done it on :whistle2:k.

If it is like you say, I'll just have to live without that achievement. 100 points is hard enough .

When we got our first one higher than that, we were like 'wait, what?' :whistle2:s

I think it just makes the jump depending on whether you meet certain criteria... why it doesn't just go to 101, I dunno, but then again, we are talking about a game where there are stuffed pink bunnies riding snow bunnies and real bunnies, and where people dressed as pigs are in line to buy sausages and hams.... :D

Just saw a new secret achievement on 'qoot's XBL profile:

Roll 200 Katamari's

Wouldn't surprise me now if one of the other secret achievements is for playing for 100 hours.

After getting the "secret" 100-point achievement, I may be done with this game -- at least until DLC comes out. I doubt I'll get 40 cousins or 40 presents. Still seemed awfully short to me...

jezelbelseven, that first "secret" you mentioned doesn't make sense to me. I think you meant katamaris rather than requests.
Are the counsins any different when you use them than the prince?
I wondered the same thing. They don't appear to do anything different.
Are the counsins any different when you use them than the prince?
No difference.

I hope there is a 100% collection achievement. I never had the incentive to get 100% in the PS2 games so that would be nice.

OK, here's a wierd thing. My boys were playing online and because they have kids accounts there are some restictions. First of all, they can't see other peoples doodling (in the lower area where you skate around and draw). OK, I can sort of see that although it is so limiting I don't think you could draw much there even if you tried. But the wierd one is that kids can't see the presents the other people have on their characters. WTF? What, are there custom naughty presents or something?. I thought it was pretty much what was in the game already and there's nothing bad there. Though perhaps this does point to some strange DLC in the future :whistle2:k.

I couldn't write my name in cursive before the 'ink' ran out, but I imagine it would be possible to do a 8==D (lol I am so mature ) if you really buckled down. Hahaha.

No idea on the not being able to see other peoples accessories though! I've got all the ones available and none of them are remotely naughty that I can think of...

I only just recently noticed in the multiplayer lobbies, that you can play soccer, and it keeps track of the goals made, as well as golf.
jezelbelseven, that first "secret" you mentioned doesn't make sense to me. I think you meant katamaris rather than requests.
Same difference. Each time you roll a katamari for a planet or what have you, it's called a 'request' as it's the King requesting you do it. Call it a katamari, a royal rainbow, a request, whatever you like, but the achievement itself calls it a request, or at least, the one I've completed did.
So is that what the flowers with numbers on them are for? We couldn't figure those out.

Well, I've still been playing a lot, and my son has too. I've gotten 100 or 120 on all the levels except the Sun one, where I got 98 and haven't been able to get back to that level since. I just need to give it a few more shots. In the process, tonight, I got the secret achievement
for 100 requests
.

It is actually pretty easy to get 120 on the last level (supergiant) and the bonus Uranus level (in addition to the Tutorial level of course). On the supergiant level I was able to roll up the black hole itself and not plug it! I got over 1,400,000 on the level, which put me just into the top 200. That may not sound great, but considering nearly all of the people in the top 200 are from Japan where they have the DLC that adds bulk to the cosmos (thus allowing them to get over 1,500,000) it's pretty good.

Then tonight in unlocking Eternal mode for my son on the Uranus level, I got the 19th highest score on the leaderboards. Actually, it's pretty funny as I keep putting him over my own scores since I do it on my game first and then later on his when I've got the technique down much better. I did way better on the Mars level in his game than mine. I have yet to hit 120 in one of the tougher (more time-constrained) levels though.

The hardest levels to get 100's in (IMO) are Neptune, Jupiter and the Sun. I just squeaked by on Jupiter yesterday and haven't gotten the Sun done yet. Interesting note - my 100 score was with a smaller Katamari than my 90 score. It DOES make a difference for the score, apparently, if you don't get enough of the "right" stuff (plants in the case of Jupiter). I had assumed after playing for a while that it didn't really matter what you rolled up.

Anyway, one last point. My son wanted to play We Love Katamari so I popped that in and took the opportunity to count up the levels in that game. So, Beautiful Katamari has, what, 12 or 13 levels? We Love Katamari has an astounding TWENTY-SIX levels (by rough count - may be off by 1 or 2). So my feeling was spot on - the new game is exactly half the size of that one. While I love the game, I really feel like it should have been more on the order of 20 levels with additional DLC later.

On the other hand, the graphics are WAY improved in the new version. I think Cheapy (and others) who say it is just a slight improvement and barely pushing the 360 hardware are wrong. I have a hard time going back to the jaggies on the originals now ;). Plus the amount of objects shown, the depth of field effects, and the lack of loading when making transitions points to a good amount of power behind the engine of the new game. Surely it is not the most technically advanced 360 game, but it is no slouch either.

good lord IO you got over 1,400,000 the largest one I"ve rolled up was around 1,003,000 or so and that was on the last stage that doesn't have a time limit and at that point I really didn't have much else to roll up I suppose I should go through some of the earlier lvls more to make the universe bigger so I have more to roll up o_O.

Yeah, that's the key. Make 5 or 6 Suns, Saturns, Jupiters, Neptunes, Uranuses (hehe)... Oh, I think you also keep your previous supergiants - so they probably add a bunch to it (not sure how that all works as obviously they don't add 1,000,000 to it when rolled up). Then just make sure you don't run into the black hole too early. The first couple times I tried it I got to 1,300,000 or so and ran into it with 2 minutes still left. On the last try, though, there wasn't much to get. I was skirting around the black hole because there were a lot of stars there and all of a sudden I rolled up the black hole, much to the delight of the King. I don't know what size you need to be to make that happen - somewhere between 1,320,000 or so and 1,400,000.
io, I always see you on playing Katamari. I'm glad you're having something to show for it. ;)
And you aren't even seeing the times I'm on my son's account doing things for him ;).

And while I wouldn't say I have anything "to show for it", I'd say I've gotten my money's worth out of it. Though I still hold to the position that the game should have included 6 or 8 more levels than it does.

io....remind me never to play you online I"m already horrible at it I can't imagine going against someone with the gametime in it that you have O_O.

Anyway, yeah, I'll check it out this evening! Good timing too, as I was just about running out of things to do. I still need to get 100 in the Sun level and then I was just about done. I was maybe going to go for the 50 online games achievement and then wait for the DLC.

Hey, what's the deal? I just checked - I don't see any DLC. I tried both the regular marketplace and through the interface in-game. Nothin' new, just themes and picture packs.

Did you just post this because they said there would be content on the 25th? I think those dates all applied to the Asian marketplace - so they probably have even more DLC now.

I don't see it either... :( Confused! Major Nelson says it should be out in the US now as well (three new levels, not the four from last week), but, it's not...

I'm getting impatient... I know a lot of people are annoyed they have to pay more, but I am ready and willing, it just won't become available! The points are burning a hole in my 360's virtual pockets :(
