you guys are putting way too much faith into a helmet. What really needs to be addressed are the amount of drivers on the road who don't pay attention to people on motorcycles and contribute to the wrecks. People in cars treat people in motorcycles like crap and don't understand what has to be done to maintain driving safely on a motorcycle.
My father has known too many people who have died on motorcycles and most were wearing helmets and practicing safe driving.
Helmets can't save everyone who gets in a motorcycle accident. Seatbelts can't save everyone who gets in a car accident. Even so, they're still worth using...ANY preventive measure has got to be better than doing nothing. I'm not sure that the hemlet would have done much good here, going from the vague descriptions of his injuries, but there's still no valid reason for not using one. Your life is ALWAYS more important than temporary satisfaction, no?
I know for a fact that I'm not planning on ever buying or even riding a motorcycle. I've lost at least one family member because of it and that's reason enough for me.
One other thought...I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but Michigan's House and Senate were going to repeal the helmet law. Our governor is most likely going to veto it; I'm wondering if she'll use this as an example of why. On the same train of thought, I'm curious as to whether or not the repeal would have made it this far if the accident had happened earlier.
