They've been blatantly milking Guitar Hero for over a year now. It runs on the Guitar Hero 5 engine, but the only difference really is just the setlist is more catered toward kids (with the obvious kid friendly celebrity cameos), problem is majority of the songs are really meh. There should be a demo for it online as well if you're curious.
I guess I have to be the typical dick that says this: the setlist quality (whether or not they are "meh") really differs person to person.
I'm in a punk band - I've grown up on all sorts of underground bands that are mostly differing versions of hard rock or punk rock, I've always loved the GH setlists because they do vary - they'll have Kiss AND the Dead Kennedys (and even smaller/odder stuff like Against Me, NOFX, Atreyu, The Pixies, etc).
I think GH5 has the best engine behind it, I think it has the best differing multiplayer modes, and the best overall presentation of any music game - it really should be the new standard.
BUT - the Band Hero setlist is anything but "meh". You have some of the most widely-known and well-loved pop songs ever - Kung Fu Fighting, In A Big Country, I Want You To Want Me, Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, Let's Dance, Whip It, Love Is A Battlefield, American Pie, Rio, Our Lips Are Sealed, ABC, Walking On Sunshine, Heard It Through The Grapevine, Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Pretty Woman, Mr Roboto, Bad Reputation, So Happy Together, YMCA - not to mention huge recent (past 15 years) pop hits - Dirty Little Secret, Steal My Kisses, Hands Down, Watch The World Die, Sugar We're Going Down, Impression That I Get, Just A Girl, Don't Speak, Wannabe, Ocean Avenue, and Taylor Swift's three singles.
Make no mistake - if you're not into pop music, you won't like it. And yes, it is definitely Guitar Hero 5 with different characters, different venues, different songs, and more censorship (I'm not bothered by censorship very much - we all know what words are being replaced - does it really hurt the experience not to hear them?).
But I think it's amazing. I really believe that GH5 is the only music game in recent memory that's significantly raised the bar for the genre, and getting an entire second game two months later with a completely different feel and so many huge (and different than normal) songs - is just awesome.
Like I said - I've been immersed in hard rock my entire life, but I respect and love the art of pop music (which a lot of great hard rock is based around), and if I had to choose between the GH5 setlist and the Band Hero setlist, I'd choose Band Hero.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion - but a tracklist like that can be very well-received by many people (just look at the Billboard charts for all those songs for proof), so I think discounting it as simply "meh" is a little unfair. I'd rather at least show someone the tracklist if I'm going to give my opinion on it.
