Sorry for the delay ladies and germs, but here's the deal for this week:

Oct. 16th: Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure Starter Pack (All Systems) - $39.99 ($30 Savings)

I'm sure most of you all have this already if you're into Skylanders but not a bad deal if you're a newbie or getting ready for Giants.

Tempting. A local walmart already has the 3ds, wii and xbox versions of the giants out on the floor.

Yes, if people enjoy playing a game it must be a rip off. Thanks for the contribution.

Expensive, yes. Rip off, naw. My children and I have had a great time hunting/collecting the figures and spent a stupid amount of hours on this game. To each there own. If you wanna be judgmental; go back back to playing call of duty and Madden 12....now that's quality money spent!!!

Considering it's not out of the ordinary for people to spend 100+ hours with those games, yeah, that is money well spent.

No problem, I'm hoping that we get another Mega Pack for Giants like I got last Black Friday. Only problem is that Skylanders is like 100x more popular now then it was last year so there's a really good chance they will sell out this time if there is another Mega Pack.

It figures. My points from my last game trade-in posted/credited to my RZ account 2-3 days after I used my 'mystery' certificate to buy Driver: San Fran for $15($10 after cert).:bomb:

Now I've got a $5 certificate sitting in my account that I don't know what to use it on unless they start doing some more gaming DOTD's.
Dude, you've said your unnecessary opinion, now get the fuck out of here so the people who care can enjoy the deal.
Excuse me? I have a right to my opinion and a right to say it. It is high-priced, and not only that, but it bastardized Spyro. This Spyro's Adventure is complete BS. If you don't like my opinion, I have a solution. There's a little X thing on the top-right part of your screen. Click it.

I swear, I'm not trying to troll here, but could someone please tell me the appeal of Skylanders? Am I missing something with it? I've played a few store demos and it just seems such a...I don't know, 2002 game. Controls were good and there was some entertainment in there, but I couldn't see myself sinking that much time in it. Of course, this is just a shallow impression from an in-store kiosk, is there more to it than I'm seeing? Is there anyone here who loves the game who thought the same thing I did at first?

To be fair, though, I'm also missing the appeal of Skylanders. I've tried it at a couple of in-store kiosks before and just couldn't get it. Good price for anyone who's into it though.

Skylanders aint my thing but i gotta admit its perfect for if you have kids ! Hunting down the figures and stuff is fun for the kiddies. If i had any i would have gotten this for them too :)

^ You know what else is fun for kids? Having them go outside and play with their imagination.

I'm going to wait five years to get into skylanders so I can pick them up for 5/$1 at yardsales.

And now I have this gut feeling this thread is just going to turn into another Skylanders hate thread... oh well. Tried to help. :whistle2:(

It's fine. I suppose I should have said it a bit different. I don't care for them, but if anybody else is interested in them, this is a good a deal as any, especially if you have credit.

I don't think this is that good of a deal. They will be giving these (first generation) skylanders away (Toys R Us already is) once Giants are out.

These are marketed towards kids and kids have short attention spans. The collectors will still seek the rare variants because that's what they do. I would assume if you waited this long to get in on Skylanders you can wait until they bottom out.

But I could be wrong and maybe someone can provide evidence that states that interest in these are still peaking?

The hate for Skylanders is ridiculous. Its the best "Spyro" game by far, even if it's vastly different.

I feel bad for the people who think they can't play it because they're way too mature and much too cool. I guess I forgot how incredibly mature Halo, Gears, COD and God of War are. The stories sound like a 14 year olds power fantasies while on a mountain dew binge, but no, they are super mature.

I never said skylanders were bad or "stooopid" so there is no reason to be defensive. I try not to comment on the quality of something unless I've actually spent time playing it.

I did say I didn't think this was that great of a deal because pricing trends show that the prices of these are going down down down and we all know activision could care less about the long term stability of the franchise and they would do things to damage that if it meant profit NOW!

I just don't see how the buzz on these can last more then another generation as stores have tons on shelves right now---it's overwhelming.

Sorry, my comment wasn't directed at you. I hadn't refreshed in a while so I hadn't even read yours, I just hear people knocking it unfairly a lot.

It's a perfect game to play with a nongamer or young person that comes by. I haven't played it alone but I imagine it isn't as much fun 1p like most mp focused games. If you like Gauntlet or Gauntlet Legends its pretty similar to that.
Paying $60+ dollars for the game, and $8 for each figure, I consider that a rip-off.
It's not any different than what other publishers do and charge you $60 for the game and then $8 or more for each DLC pack.

Skylanders has a lot of "DLC packs" though

It pretty much just is physical DLC. Brilliant idea with how much they've made off of it.
It's not any different than what other publishers do and charge you $60 for the game and then $8 or more for each DLC pack.
That's exactly how I think of it. I have not paid msrp for any figure yet but even if you did, you're buying the only piece of resellable DLC you will own, haha.

I have sold dozens of figures tbh. I still don't have my own Wham Shell because I can't bare to open one when they still sell for $22 on ebay. I do have one of each type though, and I scan the ones I sell into my game to get the damage modifier.

Imo, the best thing to do if you know you want to play, is get the starter or mega pack cheap, and watch each figures video which will show all of his moves. It makes it easy to pass up on most of the early figures. Wham Shell, Dino Rang, Camo and a few others have really unique skills that make them a pretty easy sell (though I still only have camo out of those!)

Also, if i'm not mistaken, you can scan a level pack from inside the package and the level will remain unlocked in your game. Don't quote me on that but i'm pretty sure its true. Even characters can be scanned from inside the package, 3 packs included. You can still level them and everything.

Lol, I still haven't opened my Wham-Shell either, mainly cause of how much of a pain in the arse it was to get him and finish my collection.

If skylanders isn't for you, then move the fuck on. But it doesn't mean it's a bad deal.

I don't fucking collect my little ponies but if they had a sale on them, then they have a sale on them.

Just because you're not interested, that doesn't mean it's not a deal.

Nobody gives a crap about your opinion on skylanders or my little ponies.

Sheesh.
It's not any different than what other publishers do and charge you $60 for the game and then $8 or more for each DLC pack.
And I consider that a rip-off as well. I don't pay for DLC. I haven't bought Skyrim because of its DLC. And I KNOW it will have a GOTY edition.

Cool part is you can resell this DLC. Doesn't Gamestop also let you trade them in?

Yeah, I think what everyone is forgetting is that these $8 items are not just DLC, they are toys as well. Even though, to be fair, they aren't $8 any more either - most places have bumped them up to $10. Still, except for the last few, I got most of mine for much less than that. If you can get them for $4-$5 they seem worth it as both the in-game characters and as toys. Look around a store like Toys R Us: action figures, video game figures, etc are priced from $4-$10 or more. And my little ones think it is pretty cool to play with the figures that they can also play as in the game. It is such a simple and addictive concept that I can't believe no one else (in particular Nintendo with the Pokemon thing) ever came up with before.

Note that except for those rare few who just like to collect all video game related stuff, this is probably not a game or hobby for you young single types ;). While I enjoyed hunting down the figures (that's the CAG/deal hunter in me), I wouldn't have bothered if I didn't have 3 kids who all enjoy it to various amounts. I got the game last year for my 9 year-olds birthday. At the time (mid-late Nov) the hype hadn't built up yet and I was able to get most of the figures at B1G1 type prices (so about $4 each). But then my 4 year-old really got into it as his first video game experience. And his 2 year-old sister loves playing with the figures. She knows all their names by heart.

The market didn't really take off for reselling these until the day after Christmas when a lot of kids who got the starter pack went out with Christmas money looking for new figures to get for the game. Me and my son were out looking for some at that time and it was remarkable to watch the stock go from pretty full at most stores the week before Christmas to bare shelves within about 2-3 days after.

There has definitely been a "lull" in Skylanders stuff recently though Target always seems to sell though their stock eventually. It isn't all gone within a day any more, but it still sells. And like others have said, the last figure released (Wham-Shell) is still hard to find to this day. It will all pick up again in a few weeks when the new game comes out.

Having said all that, I am a little pissed at how much Activision appears to be milking it with the Skylanders Giants 3-packs. For example, there is a GS-exclusive 3-pack for $25. It has one new figure (ShroomBoom), 1 old figure in a "new pose" (Chop Chop), and a "battle cannon" piece that just unlocks a battle arena (presumably for local multiplayer). Now, that is a rip-off, since the only way (at least initially) to get that 1 new figure is to buy it with one you probably already have plus a fairly useless 3rd piece. All the 3-packs ($20 initially, but $25 most places now) from the original game were regular characters and you could save money getting the 3-packs over the individual figures. Oh yeah, and they will have "light core" versions of some of the same figures also available separately. In fact, ShroomBoom is one of those. So if you want the cool one that lights up, you'd have to buy that separately (the GS-exclusive pack has the plain version). And then they throw in the "Legendary" versions as well...

Yes there is. It's just like the other glow in the dark ones, that light green color.

Any other gamers out there that don't have any kids want to chime in with their experience on this game? Is the DLC (toys) absolutely essential to enjoying this or can I just use the base game and have a good time?

$40 still seems kind of steep for this game to me, but I suppose I could always regift to someone else if I don't like it.

I think I'll pick this up for my 7-year-old son for Christmas. We do like the free Skylanders game on the iPad so he's familiar with the characters.

This game ok, but not great. If you don't care about the toys or the Skylanders universe, I would find something else that is cheaper or better (or both). There are just too many good games out there to spend so much money and time on this one.

For kids, it makes a lot more sense because the toys are neat and the game is basic enough to grasp and still interesting.

For adults who like toys and collectibles, there may be some appeal, but the gameplay and storyline itself is a little to basic and not that appealing.

You can play a lot of the game with just the characters included in the pack, but I don't think you will be able to play all zones.

My 7 year old did not get into Skylanders even though I encouraged it. I was really surprised. He actually seems to be slightly more interested in the iPad version than the real game. I'm kind of glad because the accumulation of toys can get expensive.

He is a huge fan of the Lego games if that gives you any frame of reference. Lego games are more fun and higher quality than this Skylanders game in my opinion too.

Yeah, I was looking at that as well.
It really is very fucked up of them to be mixing old figures, and useless items just to give you one single new character. Unless we can be patient and wait for individual packages (and our kids are usually not patient), this can get ugly.

Thanks for your reply, going to pass on this one.
My 7 year old did not get into Skylanders even though I encouraged it. I was really surprised. He actually seems to be slightly more interested in the iPad version than the real game. I'm kind of glad because the accumulation of toys can get expensive.

Good to know. I'm going to pick up this starter set and sit on it. If there's a better/cheaper deal for Christmas, I can always return it. My son has seen the game in the store and seems interested in it, but thanks to me being a CAG, he's got a buttload of games that he barely has time to play now as it is and I know he wants LEGO Batman 2 as well (and so do I).

My 7 year old will spend infinitely more time on Lego Batman 2 than Skylanders. And i'd much prefer Lego to Skylanders if I am playing with him.
