Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).
Has the trade-in estimator worked for anyone else, its been down since last night for me?
Same thing happened to me, this is apparently the 'new' page that works fine for me:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17093&type=page

The direct links for the games w/ boxart shown do NOT work, but if you type in the title in the search bar it will show up correctly.
It is working right now for me, I just checked it and am surprised at some of the trade in values for some games as they are better than gamestop. you can trade in battlefield 3 for about $24 @ bb while gs gives you only $17
:360: BF3 trades in for $12 base/$24 Total, but the :ps3: version is still $4 base/$8 total.

ALSO of note, is that the trade-in page for either version shows the new "premium edition" boxart. Not sure if it's just a glitch/laziness that caused it, but I'm starting to think the new :ps3: version IS going to be on sale w/ coupon.

I thought Prince of Persia for 360 traded in for 4 base but its the ps3 version. 360 is only .50. Not even sure if I trade it on at that point (Already have PS3 version) Wonder why its such a difference.

Because one has less resale value. Simple as that. For whatever reason, be it that there are simply more copies of Prince of Persia for 360 in their inventory (or maybe more were made for 360) or the demand is higher for PS3 for some reason; doesn't really matter. They only sell the game for like $4.99 for 360 pre-owned, so I'm not surprised it trades for so little.

Went to BBY today to do a trade and pick up a copy of Witcher 2 since it came back into stock. The guy doing my trade told me they are doing the 100% through DEC now. Basically they are going to keep it through the Holidays and nix it in Jan when people are trading in their holiday games. I so hope this will be true.

The prepaid Visa cards, you are just charged the one fee for activating it, correct? I'm going to Disneyland and I was thinking of cashing in for a few of these for spending money. It won't get a charge for purchases or anything?

Only a one-time activation fee of $5.95.

Nope $5.95 each card whether you put $20 or $200 on it. So put as much as you can to the $200 limit. No other fees.

Thanks, that will be really helpful, I can get at least $200. Do I need to keep track of how much it has so I can tell them on the last purchase if its not enough to cover it? Its been about 10 years since I used one of these, but I recall having one decline rather than use the leftover funds.

I would do the prepaid visa thing if I didn't want to use the BBY credit. I will most likely use it to get some amazon GC. Rather save the $6 since I know I'm going to be trading in the future again and will add to my BBY credit.

You would be better off keeping track of funds available. A lot of places have updated POS systems that would be able to take only the remaining balance, but not all. You can also register the card online (required for most online purchases) and you can see your available funds and purchases that way.

I didn't see the answer to this in the OP - can you add a new trade-in to an existing gift card? I was hesitant to try this because the guy I was working with at my local store in my second trade had never done a trade-in before. He was messing stuff up. I really didn't want him to do something really bad like wipe out the existing value on my card! I'm not sure if that's even possible, but I didn't want to chance it.

Only certain BB gift cards are "re-loadable" I know for a fact that the gray ones the say Video Game Trade-in are. Either way, you can get CS to combine multiple GCs. They just make a new card for the total of all cards and "pay it down" with the other cards.

you cannot.

I've asked before and you can't just have them add to an existing gift card of any sort.

So I have never done it during a trade in but I have done a price match before and they were able to put that onto an existing gift card I had. There should be no difference with trade but I have not tried. I feel ya though i currently have 11 bby cards with various amounts on them. That will hopefully be the next big change they make. The new printouts are nice and streamlined now so they are tweaking the system.

Looks like confoosious says no to trade though.

You can't get a direct trade-in to a specific GC, but you can process all returns or price matches from a certain GC purchase onto your main one or what have you.

Most employees will tell you no, they can't combine gift cards. It seems mostly a lack of knowledge though because at my store the usual game guy can combine mine. However, I ended up getting a pitch in card and now put all my trade credit on that when I get home from the store. Its much easier that way.

So do they send a physical card or can they bring it up in store? Never knew about it...might have to use one. Thanks.

Edit. Nevermind I see the answer (yes) in the faq. :)

This. They may look at you funny, cuz they may not be used to doing it, but you can just purchase a new GC for the total combined amount of the GC you have, then just pay for the new one with your old ones.

Or as has been brought up in numerous BB threads lately, just get a "Pitch-In Card" that you can load it with your GC via the website. I was told by CS they were taken out of stores around last Xmas, so I had to order one from the site, but others have reported finding them mixed in with the GC displays.

https://www-ssl.bestbuy.com:443/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17226&type=page

Got mine in the mail a few days ago and loaded it with the 6 GC I had. There's was a little bit of a delay for it to be credited to the card, but quite painless, and no waiting in line :D

Edit: ninja'd..... PITA phone lol

Seems pretty stupid. You have to get a new gift card, then combine your cards into yet another one and then toss out the old ones, helping to fill a landfill with needlessly wasted plastic cards. Hopefully they fix this so we can just add new trades to an existing card.

What is a "pitch in" card? I don't see that in the FAQ in the OP.

This is the pitch in card. My local store manager said, they stopped carrying them in stores due to the lack of interest in them, but they still offer them online. It takes 7-10 business days to arrive.

Can't you bring back the old cards to BBY to recycle them? That's what I do.

I thought I heard mentioned on other threads, When you load other giftcards onto your Pitch in card, you receive points like a regular purchase.

1.Example Trade in games and get $100 credit= 100pts
2.Receive regular GC with credit on it
3. Transfer that credit from GC to Pitch in card and recieve ANOTHER 100pts.

is that how it works?

Thanks for posting a working link. I tried a few posts back, but I haven't gotten it to work right yet using the mobile site

That is what others have reported. It is also what I have pending from loading my card the other day, but I can't really confirm until it posts.

Edit: Is there an easy way to quote more than 1 person from the mobile site? Lol

I have questions, this is the 1st time I've heard of the th pitch in card, who the hell does th BB's advertising?

1. I get 300 points = 100 tradein + 100(2x Points Just For You) + 100(RZGC Everyday Bonus Point Promo)
2. ok
3. Would I only get another 100 points from the above transaction or 300 points as a RZ GCU member?
Why would you get another 100 pts?

Is that a bonus the first time you use a pitch in card or something?
Im assuming the system counts it as a purchase, probably not intended of course.

Nope not first time you add to Pitch card, but EVERYTIME.

It's a glitch, apparently. The FAQ for the card even says you won't get RZ points for using gift cards to contribute to it, but that's supposedly not the case.

I just tried to create a pitch-in card, but it won't let me log in. It just reloads the login page. I even tried resetting my password and using the new password. Still can't log in. Anyone else having that problem?

EDIT: looks like it's not just me. ^^^
I'm trying to activate my pitch in card but the system won't log me in. Anyone else have an issue? Or is it jus tme.
I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but I had this exact same problem when I went to activate the card and was able to activate it only after I didn't go the "obvious" route to activate it. It helps to be already logged-in to your account.

EDIT:
Create/activate a card from the "my account" page, not the pitch in card page. That's how I got mine.
^There you go. That's what I did.

An employee told me BB changed the trade in system over the weekend. I didn't get my 10% bonus and it didn't give him the normal option to apply it. I think they are working out some kinks and also may be changing the way they track trade ins. Be careful with your limits.

Does anybody know if Best Buy will take disc 1 of a two disc game for trade in? I have Forza Motorsports 4 disc 1 (Play disc) but lost the install car (disc 2).

Im sure you guys are aware but according to BB Trade in android app, says 100% bonus trade expires 12/28
Yeah I was told this yesterday and now it seems to be confirmed. Yay!

I went in today to do a trade in and it is definitely different. Long story:

It looks like it has been reset. Also, it reset the information as in my driver's license and such. They had to key in all my driver license information again. Previously it used to be just the primary ID field, DOB, field and state of the the ID. I don't know if that means new start (unbanned or not for those that are). It definitely seems to point in the direction of streamlined tracking. Time will tell.

Also, in order to get the 10% GCU bonus you have to look up member information via e-mail / phone # / reward zone # (any time during the trade in but before the completing transaction). The associate needs to click on it (it being your account that pulls up given one of 3 ways listed) to apply the GCU bonus before completing transaction or else you will not get the bonus from it. The 100% was automatically applied. I was able to discern the GCU bonus from the rest since it lists it separately at the bottom. I asked him to click the "cart" (looks just like online order cart) on top right corner of the screen and pull up the trades. From there he was able to select apply GCU option via the above mentioned info and it showed up in the end (since he usually did that last via the old method).

I also noticed that when keying or scanning items for trade ins it now prompts to ask if customer has receipt for the items being traded (did not do that before). My guy just chose no and it let him move on.

Another thing is that it also gives them the option to print customer copy as in you may need to ask them to print you one if you want it as it did not do so automatically. My guy just printed a copy for me since that's how it was being done before.

It just seems more streamlined. The guy doing my trade ins seems to like it better than the system they had in place before. It was a learning process for us both again. lol!

Got back from BestBuy today and traded in Uncharted 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for $22 credit. I was tempted to get Ratchet & Clank Collection but I have a feeling that it will soon be $20 everywhere so I'll wait.

Just got back. Made some changes to their system but got $82 bucks in BB Credit. Traded Forza 4 $26, Dragon's Dogma $28, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 $10, SSX $10 and Ratchet and Clank All 4 One $10 with 100% trade in bonus. Bought the last copy of Call Of Duty Black Ops with free First Strike Map Pack for $19.99 and pre-ordered Borderlands 2. Great day today!

Thinking the same thing. I know during Black Friday at BestBuy and Walmart that the collections will be $10 - $15. I'll wait and save my money.

Yeah I know the reps at my BBY were not happy about the receipt thing. It asks after every game you trade. It made the trade process even longer for me. On cool thing was the rep took my picture with the dam scanner. Pointed it right at me and click it scans it right into the system.
I am also no longer banned! Looks like they reset everything.
I think the LP ban list just hasn't been updated yet. I wonder if they just need time to re upload everything after the new system reset.
