Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).
Confirmed by this lovely thing called an ad.
Anything else you would like to tell us? :)

Also, it is so weird that multiple people (and I personally told by 3 different employees) that the 100% was till the end of the year. So much for that. And I have 1 GoHasting shipment that I lose out on I guess.

Time to decide what $3-6 games I should dump now that it is ending.
What games are on sales next week? if any
They have an ad shot over at bluray.com. Only sale that can be seen is a $20 GC with purchase of a 3DS XL. Also, 50% trade in credit indeed.

I see the $5 DVD upgrade is back...might need to hit that again.
Guessing TIV will go up so 50% won't be a huge difference. Weird that mobile app says till end of the year.
The +$10 games most likely but those under $10 I am not so sure. They just did a pretty big drop this weekend across a lot of games. I hope I am wrong but I am not risking it for my lower TIV games I was hoping to get through but not too concerned about playing.

I already got rid of my backlog so only games left are ME2 (crap TIV of $2), Madden, and Borderlands 2. I was hoping to trade back in RE6 with 100%, but guessing I can still get around 40 for it.
After finding out I was banned I took my wife to a different Best Buy closer to home and had my wife do the trade in. System said she was banned too! The weird thing is that she's only done one other trade in for a handful of games and this was months ago! Either the new system tracks addresses too cuz that's the only way we were linked. She didn't use her Reward Zone or anything.

This does not bode well...
Uh oh, please say it ain't so. I guess that may mean my wife is going to have to move. Or, at the very least, the kid has to lol

WARNING GUYS

i went to trade in a few kingdom hearts dd 3D games and found i was banned again

i traded in a 5 games since i was unbanned a month ago no muti or anything

i think they undated the system and we all might be rebanned

So are they nailing the banned users again? Well guess that shot my idea out of the window, was going to trade ME3 for the 2nd time by getting my friend to do it, but I rather not risk it.

I traded in two copies of Kingdom Hearts 3ds (two seperate transactions, one after the other) on Saturday. I'm allowed to trade in three copies of a game, right? I don't want to be banned.

Well that -used- to be the rule, 3 copies per console. BUT a few people have said that they changed it to 1 copy per console per year.

And with all the new upgrade fiasco, I also don't want to take any chances. I'm sure you'll be okay, I don't think its been confirmed but its just another rumor flying around. The mobile trade-in site still says 3 titles per console, then again the Copyright date on the bottom page still says 2011 so my guess is as good as yours.
that can't be true, I have traded in 2-3 copies of the same game/console, I've not been banned as of Monday

Still think the banning does not follow some set of rules that are set in stone. I have done certain games 3+ times, traded 30+ games at one time, traded at multiple BBYs in one day...pretty much anything that people say got them banned. Been trading with them basically since the day they started also. The only thing I have not done is the 100+ ps2 trades some here done. My point is people are worried about the ban and I think there is no way to predict if it will happen. How many of you that are banned are also Silver members? I would be interested to know that.

I believe the current prevailing(?) hypothesis that a human will examine those accounts which are flagged to determine the ban, the process of which maybe automated following the 1/3 per year rule. This explains the different treatments that CAGs have been getting.

My local store tells me the rule is 1 game (regardless of platform) per year. So I spread my trades between me and my wife.

I think it takes awhile to kick in, and a good/bad person whos reviewing each case individually.

Yeah, it's probably luck of the draw.
What was the name of the card where you can load it with gift cards and still get reward points? Also, how can I get one of these?
Pitch-In card. You can get one through your Account page on the BBY website.

Yeah if I ended up banned it would not surprise me. I tend to trade decent games so maybe that helps...most likely not though.

Is there anyone who's been banned and has not traded in a game that Best Buy has had on sale? I'd be interested in hearing about that. I'd imagine it raises a red flag more often than trading in multiples of a game does.
Not too sure if that will help. I went to trade in a game yesterday and found out I was banned again. Note that I was banned before but then reinstated. After upgrading their systems I'm banned again? This time I adhered to all the rules so not sure what's up.

So back to my story.
Hmmm interesting. Your wife getting banned may indicate another wave of bans being issued.

I've traded same game (same platform) more than 10 copies in different best buys around me and together I've traded more than 200 games in last 3-4 months. Therefore, many of your assumptions regarding the banning process is not true, as I have not been banned yet!

If that does happens to you maybe you can do the passport trick, don't know if that still works though.

I'm a Silver Member. Have been for years yet I'm re-banned again (or the system didn't reset and just took awhile to update all the previous info.)

It seems like there are tons more bans on here for BBY than GS? It just seems like their trade program is not as well thought out as it should be. They have gotten better about getting ahead of their own sales but beyond that to ban people for trading games at TIVs they have determined to be profitable seems weird to me. Maybe they are taking losses right now to build awareness and people trading too much are more a liability. You would think the proper response to high trade ins would be to adjust the value once you fill your quota and not ban people actually providing games.

if the old "log in" trick to the trade in site is an indication of banning, I'm ok. I remember in the last wave of bannings, I couldn't log in to that system. Note that in all my trading activities, I never traded in more than 3 titles per system and based on looking at my history, probably avg about 20-30 titles per calendar year. So I'd also lean towards some random person looking at individual accounts. But who knows for sure?

I've traded more then 3 copies per title at 4 different stores in 2 different states and have not been banned. Has anyone traded in more the 3 copies at the same location?

Does location even matter?

I did.

A small tip for those of you that have a pitch in card and have been buying the prepaid credit cards. I usually end up with a card with like $2-3 left on it which is a pain in the ass. What I have been doing recently is contributing that amount back to my pitch-in card to avoid having a bunch of them lying around. Works pretty well.

I have been dumping my gift cards from trade ins and my $10 store pick up codes onto it so I could use it to preorder my games and all have it go back on 1 card if I pm or return.

I just went through all my games and looked up values and put them into a spreadsheet. Any value in me copy/pasting that list here under a spoiler for you guys to see?

Is there an update on the 10/6 end date? Can someone confirm that this date is NOT the actual end date?

I'd like to think that they will continue this through the entire month of October...

I saw the scan on a different website of next week's ad. It says 50% :(

OUCH! I hope that isn't the case...That seems like what Gamestop is offering (at best) and BestBuy has had the upper hand here for some time with these trade-in prices....50% just doesn't do it for me considering that it's been 100% for quite some time. That's what I was afraid of...

Well, if that's the case (unless we have absolute confirmation) I'll have to run to BB this week and trade in all I can.
I saw the scan on a different website of next week's ad. It says 50% :(
Did you happen to see any of the deals of said scan?
I take it you can still go Saturday then? Finally found a Best Buy in the DC area that doesn't need a receipt. That rule is ridiculous.
Really. Which one? It seemed like all the DC and NoVa stores (except Baileys Crossroads) require receipts, but the MD locations don't.

Shit. I guess this means I gotta blow through Mass Effect 3 before weeks' end if I wanna make money on the game AND have played through it. I guess that also means I should rip open one of the two copies of ME2 I picked up during the $5 sale and play that first so I have a save file to continue from.

Although I really don't even care about the game or series for that matter. I only bought it cuz it was cheap.
Did you happen to see any of the deals of said scan?
Only saw one page and it had $20 GC with 3DSXL. Otherwise is was PS3 MSRP, Dishonored and Just dance 4 MSRP, Pokemon Black and White 2 $34.99 each.

Yep. It's definitely down to 50% bonus starting Sunday.

I'm sure when you compare 50% to 100% its not going to be that big of a deal as TIV will raise.

Traded in 8 games today, for some reason the guy gave me credit for trading in Red Faction: Armageddon twice. Noticed this when I saw the receipt but didn't feel like mentioning it because it took 25 minutes and 2 computer systems to finally get the trades to go through, and even though I mentioned it and the guy said yes, I didn't get my extra 10% GCU.

Later I realized it now looks like I traded in 2 copies of RF:A for 360. Forgive my ignorance if this is a stupid question, but could this be enough to possibly get banned from trading? I'm a very casual trader and have just been cashing in on some of my older games, so I really don't know much about BB trade-ins, but I don't wanna get banned. I don't think I will but maybe someone with more knowledge can help out. Thanks.

^^
No banning if all you did was only 2x of 1 game. Even if you did more than 1 game, I doubt they will ban you for that

That weird. My wife ID wasn't ban after eher 2nd trade of 2x of 3 games couple of days ago. Her 1st trade was 2x of 10-13 games 3-4 months ago. Both time I used my GCU for the 10%. 2nd trade input a diff addr then mine whereas 1st trade same addr. So maybe address tie into banning. Did ur wife 1st trade involved more than 3 or more of the same game?

No. The first trade didn't have more than 3 games. If I remember right they were all random games as as I didnt want to draw attention to her account.

As for the second address attempt we didn't get a chance to try as the employee didn't want to even attempt it.

ok i gotta ask i see they are giving $40 trade in on borderlands 2 would that screw up the 100%. i might have to bring some games in and see if i get lucky.

$40 is with the 100%, normal trade value is $20.
