Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).
Has Best Buy ever done this promotion before, the extra 50% TIV towards a pre-order?

I'm just wondering if this will come up again in the near future (like with Max Payne 3, or some other big title).
If only there was some sort of spot where all the past promotions for nearly a year were listed, that information would be useful for a question such as this. What was I thinking when I didn't include it in the OP!? Oh... Wait... I guess that's what that big blue-ish text that says "previous promotions" is.

 I'm really considering adding that 'read the OP' gif that I think a couple on here use to my already somewhat massive signature on my posts. Not that it would help at all since people will always be dumbasses and ask the same questions 9,999,999x even if they're answered a post or two above theirs.

It's really not worth getting annoyed over anymore.
When you say it ends 3/3 does that mean I can still trade in on saturday?
Ya
EDIT: Ninja'd
In my research today, I believe I have found the company that is likely responsible for reporting the inaccurate trade amounts that caused law enforcement to show up at my house. I thought I would share it with the rest of you, as you may want to inquire on whether your local law enforcement, Gamestop, Best Buy, Pawn Shops, etc. use their services. There's a very good chance many of you are already in their database.

www.leadsonline.com
That's not the one I was talking about. The real one is much much scarier. Their website is mostly red and I thought it sounded like a credit reporting company's name.

if you are doing things legit and have accounts that record your transactions (ebay/paypal/bb rewards zone/power up rewards/etc)...then you should have nothing to worry about.

interesting.

It is sad that in the internet age, any joe schmoe can become a "writer":

See the rub yet?

what rub? That pawn laws are designed to help catch criminals and god forbid it's a minor inconvenience for some people? BB and GS can report all my trade ins to the feds if they want. I don't give a shit about the cops cause I'm not paranoid. If they want to come here and ask for my receipts, I've got every single receipt on my computer.

I'm not gonna live my life in constant fear of the "po-po" nor am I going to be itching for a fight against big government every time a policeman crosses my path. Every time I've dealt with a policeman, I'm cordial, they're cordial and we go about our merry way.

I got a rewardszone silver email today. Funny as I dont think Ive spent even $250 in actual cash, nevermind $2500. I always assumed purchases via gift card, didnt count towards the actual total. Nice surprise.

Ahh don't you love the new amerika .... GUILTY until YOU PROVE YOUR INNOCENCE..

Maybe it should be the gov't who prove I stole those games instead of the other way around... sounds like a crazy concept in this day and age, but I swear the founding fathers had that in mind when they wrote the CONSTITUTION... guess most gamers aren't too literate in American history..

I love how our gov't forces businesses to keep records of where everything comes from, yet our very own gov't can even account for all the missing monies that disappeared in Iraq to "contractors"
Wonder what happened to all those billions Wall Street lost, what happened to their records...

Gotta love big brother keeping you NFL 99 safe from them criminals....LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ahh don't you love the new amerika .... GUILTY until YOU PROVE YOUR INNOCENCE..

Maybe it should be the gov't who prove I stole those games instead of the other way around... sounds like a crazy concept in this day and age, but I swear the founding fathers had that in mind when they wrote the CONSTITUTION... guess most gamers aren't too literate in American history..
 who was thrown in jail for trading in video games?
I got a rewardszone silver email today. Funny as I dont think Ive spent even $250 in actual cash, nevermind $2500. I always assumed purchases via gift card, didnt count towards the actual total. Nice surprise.
I also got a RZ silver e-mail, but yesterday. I missed qualifying by several hundred dollars before the reset, so yeah, it was a nice surprise for me too.

Not yet... and how do you know someone hasn't...? Maybe everyone that trade games need to report to CAG and if they "disappeared" mysteriously they are probably sitting in a jail somewhere...

Sounds more like trading video games is more of a hassle for both buyers and sellers... I wonder just how can anyone profit from all this nonsense..
You think GS, BB, BBV don't need to pay these independent contractors to monitors their business...

hahahah what a joke you are.

it's funny though that it all circled back to "you can't make money on used video games" with you, which is the first instance in this thread where you showed you weren't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Maybe you should get an education and stop blaming the government for everything.

twinton - I appreciated your story and it was interesting. I'm sorry it derailed into this nonsense. Don't listen to these "get a lawyer" people. Any reasonable person would look at your receipts and just check off the "investigated, nothing there" box.

ditto. I have no idea how much I spent at BB last year, but it wasn't $2500. My tracker on the RZ site went to zero months ago and never fixed itself so I can't track it either. Most of my purchases have been through GCs so I guess I got lucky like you :applause:

People that actually have a education knows that the gov't is the problem.. Damn never knew our founding fathers were dumb high school dropouts when they wrote the CONSTITUTION...

Thats right twinton listen to confooscious, don't talk to a lawyer don't even bother calling a lawyer for some free advice, just keep your reciepts and hope that the police buy you story...... and they don't confiscate your reciepts and destroy the evidence ...

Look how well BBV and Hollywood video trade in program did for them...

I also received an email. I spent a bit too much this holiday - maybe around $1000. Also probably received about $800 or so in GCs from trades. perhaps it's a combined total although I recall people reaching silver in past years without spending much.

If I remember correctly I believe there was a way to get Premier Silver by buying gift cards with gift cards and repeating until you reached the $2500. Supposedly you could use $250 in gc credit to buy $250 in gift cards and repeat it 9 more times to get that limit.

I needed a new signature. Thanks.

Thanks Confoosious...I enjoy reading your posts, and tend to agree with you most of the time.

I'm not too worried about anything at this point, I've got nothing to hide. I spent the day organizing everything, just in case the police happen to return. I'm pretty confident they won't, but if they do, I feel that I'm well prepared.

The detective last night even said he wasn't going to file a report on it. I tend to believe him, as does my wife, but I understand why some people are paranoid of the police and wouldn't believe it. In my area, the police seem to be pretty reasonable and use common sense. I have been to other parts of the country where this is not always the case.

Really, the only thing I'm not satisfied with is how they had a number of $28K to begin with. The detective seemed to back pedal off that number when I told him that was insanely high.

Anyway, please return to talk of trade-ins. I'll post an update if my situation changes, but other than that, there's not much else to say.

:applause: If only the DM from GS actually knew all of the fun flips I did before they decided to start really keeping an eye on me I woulda been banned sooner.;)

There was the HWV $5 sale to $20 trade value bump games which was epic. Trade in $15 in games from HWV, get enough for those controller/game packs. Then rinse and repeat with the games from those game packs since they were on the qualifying list too. So turn $35 in HWV $5 games and the two games from the first two packs into 3 spare controllers and a game to keep(or flip back with another 2 $5 games n keep the cycle going).:booty:

I don't come to this thread anymore looking for good BBY flips, instead I come for the social commentary and bizarre stories, with the occasional horrific rant thrown in here or there.

lol. hey let me know which bb's you're going to on sunday so i know not to go there lol.

wow, just got a silver membership as well. Haven't spent anything but giftcards at BB in the past year or so, though I've flipped over 1k of games to them. Nifty little surprise. Haven't been silver for a year or two, anything good come with it now adays.
yeah i got silver also, and didnt spend any cash last year. wow
My silver was extended and I didn't even come close to spending $2500.
I think they are just targeting certain demographics and hoping they will spend money.

Ah, I forgot about the 45 day return policy, that was a very nice thing to have int he past. Usually can get a game day one and still be able to return/get money back when it goes on sale a month and a half later.

Hope this is new information but if not, don't flame on me too much.
I found out today that I have also been banned, haven't returned any pre-orders nor gone over the trade limit, and my total trade in is less than $500. I've called the number they gave me and they've said the same thing that most of you guys have heard. That they don't have authority to override or do anything about it since it is done at the corporate level and they don't even have a phone number to give me. One thing they did say though is that the ban is for a year and after it has been a year, someone at corporate reviews the 'ban list' and puts whoever they deem 'profitable' off the list.

what did you do that you found out (trade, preorder, return, etc)?

I haven't gone over trade limits and had about $700-$800 in trades. I have returned a lot of stuff including some preorders (I spread returns out across stores too in case). I would hope spending habits are considered before bans...

They aren't. I also got the silver membership email (somewhat surprisingly, but it's always been based on dollar amount spent not so much on actual dollars, as opposed to gift cards), and I may have honestly spent that much there this year. A couple of times when I had issues with my Reward Zone the people joked about how hard it was to find a single transaction because there were so many. I was banned none-the-less and I know it didn't come from the store level. Got the same stuff on the phone, "You must of done something wrong, you are banned, that's it." That is less of a paraphrasing than it should be.

Silver was a nice little surprise, especially since trade in dollars seem to be counting towards getting it next year (and with a 25% bonus on the points gained from trade ins as well, that'll be cool). Glad I've got friends/family to do my trades for me now that I'm banned though.

Hoping a 50% bonus pops up again either next week or the week after. Have a couple of games ready to trade in but not enough to bother a friend to do it yet.

Weird, just checked my account and i was Silver Premier too. Last i checked last year i had barely spent 1200$ or so. (Unless they counted all my gift card purchases too).

Either way, all these bannings are crazy
Traded in about 15 games and got $190.

The pair of handcuffs I walked out in were free, though.
care to explain....?
[posts like this make me glad i don't live by iatcg. there'd be nothing left to buy lol.
I'm not really THAT bad in all honesty. I do sometimes hoard shit if I feel I can get rid of it elsewhere before the return period for them lapse. If I find that I cannot do so, then they go back to the store.

Since I've been unemployed/underemployed/whatever for the last couple of years I've been free to explore flipping more full time as opposed to just doing it whenever I got spare time.
However, thanks to the pricks that control the gas prices, the aforementioned freedom to explore all avenues has been severely limited by my sparse income I do have being used mainly for gas. Someone nuke the frickin' Middle East please.:bomb:

So with that said I went whole hog on some flips, while at the same time being very conservative with others.

However, from the time I've been doing this I've found the following to be true:

The trade programs from Gazelle, TRU(Gamer's Factory) and Target(NextWorth) all suck balls unless you can do a mass flip of older shit that you buy cheap from flea markets and such. Their values on recent titles typically tank within two weeks to a month of release and they tank HARD. Otherwise, you're better off trading to GS/BB and some online sites that take trades.

If you know a flip, keep it to yourself until you've exploited the ever loving crap out of it and sent off all of your copies to wherever. Otherwise you'll have people 'locking in' shit at BB and other sites and causing those values to drop even before you have the games in hand.

Hmmm.....was going to hit GS with their 3/10 deal, but BBY's TIV's are much higher. Should be able to pay for ME3 outright with a trio of trade-ins.

Might even sign up for Unlocked to net a $5 profit (assuming they're still doing the pre-order $ 20gift-card bonus thingy).

Quick question (So i dont screw myself out of about 40$+). If the current 50% bonus ends on 3/3, that means tommorow night right? Pretty sure i'm not gonna be able to get to my store today (Some insane storms here)

You want help reading a calendar? I'm not sure what you are asking? As long as you are somewhere on the continental united states, then yes, tomorrow is 3/3.
