Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).

As long as the manager at your BB isn't a total killjoy, I feel like you should be able to get the additional 40% as long as you show them the deal on their website. I didn't have to argue at all, just got a second gift card with the extra TIV on it.
The Orange store is the absolute best store they have
I haven't been there in a while, but I'll join in and say that I've never had a bad experience there. All the managers/employees were always cool about everything.

(in-store) On one of the trade-in pages it will select a default for the bonus. Directly beneath that there are options that are shaded out that they can go through and select for 40% bonus based on the pre-order you do. e.g. Diablo 3.
Nope, BestBuy doesn't do accessories for some reason. However, you will get $52.65 at Amazon and $30 at GameStop.
Well that sucks, Amazon turned it down for some reason, and i dont like going to gamestop.

Another question.... I got my copy of Uncharted 2 from a Black Friday Bundle so it has a "Not for Resale" tag on the back, does BB accept those?

Yes

I went on on the 50% and guy was nice. Took him 5 minutes to notice me though. One time I had a guy literally refuse to help me find something.I asked him and he said no and walked off. I stood there, dumbfounded, until another guy asked what I needed a few seconds later, I.guess Ye saw the other guy. He wasn't happy after asking for what had just happened and asked for the other employees name. Turns out the second guy was a manager, maybe watching that employee. Judging by the angry but not surprised look.

Yes, but you have to trade it in disc only(TIV stays the same), they wont take a case that says not for resale on it.

Hey we all have bad days... ? Or maybe he's just a jerk.

Anyone know what happens at a bb when it closes? Is everything just msrp and they take it off? and do the discounts get higher the closer it is to closing?
Yes, but you have to trade it in disc only(TIV stays the same), they wont take a case that says not for resale on it.
Sure they will. Maybe YMMV if your store doesn't? I've traded in Not For Resale games that were part of Move Bundles and Collector's Editions at multiple locations and never had a problem. Why would they not take the case if they'll take disc-only? They might trash it later or something during processing but they should accept it regardless...

You're a VERY nice person!!!!!!

For good. It's azzholes like that, that sink companies!
Anyone know what happens at a bb when it closes? Is everything just msrp and they take it off? and do the discounts get higher the closer it is to closing?
I would like to know this to if anyone has experinced a store closing yet.
I would like to know this to if anyone has experinced a store closing yet.
They recently announced that they will
I'll be closing some stores nationwide I believe
Anyone know what happens at a bb when it closes? Is everything just msrp and they take it off? and do the discounts get higher the closer it is to closing?
Yep. This is exactly what happens. Everything in the store is usually raised up to MSRP(sometimes higher) and then they apply the discounts from those prices. Unfortunately by the time the discounts get decent enough that stuff might actually be a deal there's usually nothing left in the store.
I would like to know this to if anyone has experinced a store closing yet.
I take it you never went to any of the CompUSA, Circuit City, Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery, Blockbuster Video store closing or chain liquidation sales? I've been going to these for YEARS now and back in the early 2000's you might actually stand a chance to get some deals at the tail end of the sales.

But nowadays, you either have to buy stuff at 10-20% off or it's likely GONE by the time it reaches 50-60% off and that's IF it ever reaches those amounts before the store closes. Anymore, it seems like as soon as store closing signs pop up all of the  "deal hunters" come out of the woodwork and buy everything up while thinking they're getting a good deal.

I talked to some people with huge stacks of books in their hands when Borders was closing and they were the typical ignorant normal consumer that thinks $1 off MSRP is a 'fantastic deal'. Morons. Yet when all of these chains were having actual decent sales, none of them likely ever shopped at those stores.

A best buy closing is mild to say the least. They'll take all the useful stuff out and then softly discount the rest. Here's an email I received today about a local closing:

We will be permanently closing the Techridge Best Buy store on May 12, or when supplies run out, whichever is earlier.

Don't worry: we are including directions to other Best Buy locations in your area, and invite you to shop at BestBuy.com®. Plus, we're having a limited-time sale at the Techridge Best Buy store.

Here are the details:
The store will be closed to customers temporarily on April 14. We will re-open April 15 - May 12, while supplies last, for a sale of up to 20% on select, remaining merchandise.
I think this is YMMV because my best buy wouldn't accept my sports champions with a not for resale UPC from a move bundle until I took it in the next day disc only. Which makes no sense at all but whatever floats their boat I guess.

usually when the preorder bonus/any bonus doesn't work automatically, it stays grayed out instead of popping up for them to select. in this case the cs clerk has to manually double click on the promotion you want to use (instead of trying to check the box which is how they select it). double clicking it makes it available, then they can check the box. happened to me last week and thats how cs and i solved the problem- they let me go behind the counter and look at the screen with them lol.

Same thing as I posted above. Wonder if we went to the same BBY.

Oh yeah, good news everyone. Did a test trade yesterday and my ban was removed! The gaming supervisor was saying it was probably removed when Best Buy's new fiscal year started. Btw, I was banned originally at the end of December.

My test trade was today and I was banned in December too but mine wasn't lifted. A couple of others have had success like yours though (congrats man lol).

So the ban popup/prompt still comes up for you? Wondering if it looks different now since they updated their system.

Yep the ban prompt came up still. I'll try another test trade in a month or two.

So Union City trade in system finally works again. Geeze, I tried the last few weeks but their system wasn't fixed.

I went to BB today and the 40% trade-in bonus for pre-orders wasn't available even though it's still listed on the website but the dude who was doing my trade-in gave it to me anyways. He stacked it with my 10% gamers unlocked too.

Picked up ME3 to PM in a few days too since my friend has been bothering me about it.

I don't know if this has already been posted, but apparently ppl with a RZ account are now getting RZ points for trade-ins. I did a trade in the other day that totaled $26 (not including bonuses), and get 52 points (26 points for the trade-in and another 26 for something called "RZGC Everyday Bonus Point Promo). So, a very nice surprise! It's basically 4% more in trade-in at Best Buy.
Cant you make a new thread and wiki it? or someone can
The past thread was a wiki for a while but no one ever updates it. They just comment in the thread and bitch about how the OP isn't updating it (I usually did update it but sometimes it was later in the day). You really need someone willing to agree to do it. I'll do it a bit longer (even longer if that ban lift thing potentially proves to be the case for me, wish I had read that before I was in the store today), but then sooner or later I'll probably just not be able to update it in a timely manner at all anymore.

I can confirm this

This is why I no longer volunteer to maintain/update any threads, since people are so used to the info just being there on THEIR schedule and don't even take into account that(and I hate this statement) people might have a life outside of CAG.

When I maintained the penny guide thread I had people asking for this change and that. I basically openly challenged them that if they wanted those type of changes I would let them make and maintain that post for those things they wanted to see. Most of the people crying for one change or another soon shut up when I put the onus on them to keep those posts going.

:rofl:How did I know my stalker was gonna make that comment. Yet I'm the one that's repetitive? Dude, build a bridge and get over it already.

As for why I left, it was partially because of the lynch mob attitude. Not to mention I was getting sick of running that thread anyway due to all of the impatient people who cried about when it was gonna be updated and having 'ideas' for it but not wanting to actually put in the work to maintain a post themselves.

Mine went through 2 weeks ago. A few days later I tried another one, all different games, and was banned (re-banned). I don't know what's up with the system. I guess I'll use my husband's ID and hope he doesn't get banned.

This worries me.
Why do people get banned? For too many trades?
Trading duplicates, violating program rules, obtaining bonuses by preordering then canceling the preorders, etc...

i think i got banned for just lots of volume and buying/trading right back in, and the canceling of $5 preorders. oh wellz. also i love the iamthecheapestgamer/confoosious dichotomy we got going here.
Trading duplicates, violating program rules, obtaining bonuses by preordering then canceling the preorders, etc...
But therein lies the rub. Up till recently the system stated plainly that you could trade in up to 3 of the same title per platform per year, but that limit has been reduced to 1 per platform now.

Yet people on here who didn't go over the 3 per title per year limit were frequently reporting themselves being banned. So why in the hell even have the limits if you're not going to let people trade in up to those amounts?

As for the cancelling pre-orders, that is kinda crappy, but they also do have to realize that sometimes people change their minds or get a better deal elsewhere. It just seems like BB is taking a way too reactionary approach to the trade-in program and likely banning some of the folks who were actually trading in decent quantities of games that they then resold in their stores.
This worries me.
Indeed. This is just more bad news for folks that were banned. I can totally see the L&P analyst just summarizing the trades and just reapplying a filter to ban all ID's that traded in over a certain X amount of titles.
Looks like a 50% trade in bonus on Max Payne 3, Prototype 2, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Diablo III, Darksiders II or Borderlands 2 this week.
Really? I just did a $100 (base) trade-in too.

Poop, missed out on an extra $10 on that trade-in

SCORE. darksiders 2 is a day one purchase for me so +60% tiv (gcu included) is icing on the proverbial cake.

awesome, glad iv been lazy with my trade ins. lol
any confirmation if preordering prototype 2 gets you the steel case in store at preorder like ac3?
also if you preorder prototype 2 dont forget to grab a free @gamer mag.
