Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).

If they are really as strict as this makes it sound, there won't be anyone left to trade in games after a while.
Intelligence has never been Best Buy's strong suit. Hence the fact that they're closing stores and representing a real going concern. I'll be flat amazed if they're still in business in 4 years... I predict bankruptcy in 2.
Wow. I didn't know BB bans if you trade in more than 1 game of the same title, same platform. That'll be extremely harsh.
It might even be 1 game regardless of platform, who know since they dont disclose the god damn rules. those who got banned I assumed received an email from bestbuy?

Well I bought Resistance 3 a couple of months back (new) and traded it in. A couple of days ago I bought it again with April's GCU coupon (I think it was the same copy I traded it in) and traded it back in again - and I haven't been banned.

lol no email from bb. people find out when they go in to do a trade in and a prompt shows up on the screen. only way to find out if ur banned is to do a test trade.

Aah good to know. I've never been banned but in the past I have traded in 2 copies of the same game and 2 copies of the same game, different platform when shifting GS credit. I have cancelled 2 pre-orders too but I never exceeded the 3 per game, per platform rule.

I don't think there's any reason to second guess when BB bans customers from trading in. They probably look for some pattern in a customer's activity.
It's been changed for almost a month or so now. Right around the time that they had Dead Island pre-owned for $19.99 for 2-3 days(which is likely the trade that got me banned finally:lol:) is when it changed. It's just likely that some employees in some stores haven't been brought up to date with that new info as of yet..
So now 1 per title per consol instore? how about BB online? Thanks.

Exactly - I'd like to think Bestbuy doesn't just ban people because they feel like it. There's got to be some reason. Or maybe they do, I don't know. I haven't really had trouble trading anything in stacking 50% and 10%, disc only, etc.

i just traded a second copy of quantum of solace ps3, I owned two, played two, but bought the second again to finish it when it was cheap. I heard the limit was 2 per title, so now im screwed?

I traded in 2 copies of Uncharted 3 yesterday and was planning on doing it again as I won a free copy and should expect it in the mail within the next few weeks
aah now there's a 50 game limit too?
Supposedly but my usual BB worker who does majority of my trade-ins never mentioned anything.

you dont get rz points for using gift cards to make purchases so dont give your rz card. of course the only reason to use your rz card when using gc is for 10% off used games. so to whoever wrote you get double points on gaming purchases is half-wrong.

So there is no reason not to use your RZ card - even if you don't get points. The guy giving the advice made it seem like if you use your RZ card with a purchase made using a GC that there is a side effect.

Its not like you'd be penalized for anyhting. Besides you are wrong. This is innacurate info as you DO gain points on purchases even if you use a gift card. You wont gain points for the amount of the gift card used, but you will get points for the difference paid.

Lets say You want to buy something thats $40 and use a $10 GC, you will only get 30 points (the difference after the gift card). Times that with the RZ Gamers Club Bonus Promo, and you get double points for a total of 60. Thats 60 points a person would have missed out on had they listened to the bad advice of not using your RZ card

So bottom line, ALWAYS use your RZ card when you purchase something, regardless of if you use a gift card or not. You could be losing valuable points you could have earned otherwise

Thank you.

You can only trade in 2 disney universe's for each system at the same time at best buy right? Or you get banned? Is that the rule?

And are you guys literally just buying the games at the general checkout line and then walking over to the game section to get the game clerk to accept the trade ins? I'm wondering If I should hang out in my car for a few minutes or something before going back in the store to trade my games in. How are you guys pulling it off?

Geez BB stop temping me. I told myself that I'm done after my mega trade on Friday but you keep on trying to pull me back in. If value still hold on Tues than I will add a little fire to my blaze of glory.

Going to trade in arkham city for 18, and bad company 2 for 9 after getting it from the last GameStop B2G1 sale or free. Pretty good profit to me, as I don't hoard copies/resell.
the GC portion of your payment doesn't count towards anything. But the product you bought will show up in your history.
I'm not overly paranoid and could really care less about the BB trading ban as I've traded in a total of 4 games so far this year (all different titles) But if you're going to try trading in games you purchased same day it WOULD absolutely be smart not to us your RZ card when you make the initial purchase.

By not using the RZ card they wouldn't have a way to tie the purchase and trade in together.

While sheer quantity and duplicates may be the number 1 and 2 reasons for the bans; I'm sure buying a game JUST for the sake of trading it in seconds later would be a close third.

 You should at least go to your car and rip off the shrink wrap and take the tape off (360).

@GBAstar
pre-ordering to take advantage of promo trade-ins and then canceling/returning the order would be 4th then?

Yeah that actually might even be number 1. I don't work at Best Buy so I have no idea. I'm pretty cool with the Gaming Lead so I could ask him but it seems like (to me at least) that these bans are coming down from outside the individual stores and the store employess don't really have any idea as to what triggers them.

I never understood why anyone would cancel a preorder deposit. I would have to imagine that would count as a return as far as best buy is concerned and above and beyond getting a trade ban it might also affect your ability to do normal returns as i know Best Buy tracks all that information.

It's 1 per system per year, but if you wanna chance it the computer won't stop you from trading in more then 1. A knowledgeable employee might deny you though.

It's important to remember that there isn't one single person that knows, for sure, what any limits or anything else are that cause someone to be banned. It's all just conjecture, at this point. Everyone that asks gets a different answer depending on who they talk to.

So for those who got their bans over turned or found out they could start trading again how did they go about it?

OT/EDIT

Oh wow. I haven't checked reward zone in about 5 or 6 months.

Apparently I've been a silver member since February.

This is true but I can guarantee you it has to do with a combo quantity (overall, and particular title), buying games and immediately trading them in and cancelling preorders.

I can promise you if you aren't doing the above your account won't get banned

It's volume/going over the limit that'll get you banned.

they just did test trades -usually just 1 game- to see if it goes thru

I wasn't going to trade my 2nd uncharted 3 but since I know they are going to most likely re-release it with all the DLC and possibly do a bundle for all three uncharted games, I guess I'm trading it in.

I'll probably ask the workers if they got an update on the trade-in policy or not.

Well you just talked me into trading my copy also. It has been sitting on my self since Nov and I can wait now for the GOTY. Might as well get $29 for it.

Guarantee means that you have a definitive, verified answer. You can assume, but unless you have talked to someone that set the policy or has verified knowledge, it's all just conjecture. That's what I was saying. It's not a swipe at you, GBA, it's just that no one haa any sort of verified answer, so it's just about being intelligent when trading and accepting the consequences if you go over some arbitrary line in the sand.

Uncharted 3 goty edition was announced this week. It includes all 14 dlc. Released date and price not announced yet.
here's a nice little game you guys can buy tomorrow and flip right back to best buy. Disney Universe is on sale for 7.99 for all systems. It trades back in at best buy for $13 base on 360 and PS3, then $12 for Wii. So hopefully the 50% does extend, to make this flip better.

warning/disclaimer: doing this flip could lead to you being banned. so do so at your own caution.
Thanks for the heads up. I was going to my BBY anyhow today to trade in 2 games I got at a yardsale and pick up some more Blu's with the T&S
Bought a copy on Xbox and Wii and traded them in for $40 after bonus and gamers club :bouncy:

I just took mine over to the gaming counter after buying them, unwrapped them right there. I know the gaming people so it wasn't a big deal, the knew that I had purchased it

Good heads up on the Disney Universe game. $19 BB credit and change with the 50% bonus.

I've never traded at BB before, and they said there was a 1 copy limit per year per title. Took my second copy to GS and got $18 with the extra 50% for buying a pre-owned game.

Made for a nice break from studying for finals all weekend, thanks!

..per console

hope they don't have an overall trade limit.

checking my trade in papers, I have traded in about 30 games for around $850-$900 since September. I have traded in multiples when there was a 3 per limit and have not done any duplicates since the April rule change.

Damn, the guy I was chatting up with said he heard about the 50 year trade-in limit so it's a good possibility that it is in effect. Although, it's super shitty that he doesn't know for sure. What kind of training/communication does BB have with their workers cause wow that's sad when the person working there don't even know.

X_x I'm pretty sure I'm going to hit that limit soonish...all different titles though (didn't even get a chance to trade in the 2nd Uncharted 3 either, ahahaha)...and I only traded like a a month ago. fuck it, I'll go out in a bang if I have too.
