In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.

[quote name='C00KIEM0NSTER']This is getting ridiculous, online it still said (as of last night still being able to pre-order it) that the DLC will be emailed. Now, how am I supposed to tell if I got the Amazon code or the BB code? I pre-ordered at BB to get that one. They are sure as heck gonna hear from me if it all doesn't go smooth as planned.[/QUOTE]

I too pre-ordered online (late last night even) with in-store pickup. I have recieved an email with a code even though I've yet to pick up the game. I cant tell you which code I got as I'm not near my 360 (and dont want to auto-redeem on the website) but at least you *should* expect a code via email.

Preordered Saints Row 3 to get $39 for an extra copy of Gears 3 I had. I got super lucky and found a limited edition of Battlefield 3 for PC. I walked out with it for $26 and the guy who helped me even gave me a dog tag from their midnight launch.

[quote name='Jimmienoman']If you ever talk to BBY employees that actually know about programming. Their system is completely and utterly crap. BBY has decided to not update their system for many, many years and now they wonder why all this can't be easily linked.

It literally has been bad coding, put on bad coding that was put on an extremely fault ridden base.

The only reason their return system is as good as it is, is because an outside company deals with tracking and supplements BBY on their return system.

While I agree that what you suggest should be done, I have been on the short end of the
Programming stick where the best that I can hope to produce is a POS (and that is piece of sheet). Sadly I think the only way they can get this running smoothly on the systems side is to pony up the dough. Which I don't see happening.

Now since they know that, they should educate their employees much better. I would have all employees that can run a register to not be allowed to go to work until they have at least read the procedure memo and/or are trained properly on preorder bonuses.[/QUOTE]

wow, again what a mess
so essentially they fixed something that was not broken...
you used to buy the game, scan the preorder slip, pay the difference then leave...
and this new return and rebuy with the preorders must totally hose the 5/$100 promo as the return negates the preorder history...
and the requiring and capturing your ID info with a receipt return OR EXCHANGE is ludicrous, I can not imagine what the law suit will be if that third party info gets compromised....

Nice, I was there too and really wanted to get a T-Shirt...but instead got a dog tag...

Did any store hand out T-Shirts???

Only had dog tags at my store and there were about 15 of them.

The memo stating the mistake said they were working with EA and if you got the wrong code you will be e-mailed the right one. It was 4am so I don't remember all of it but I'll get the full info asap.

[quote name='donut']wait wait new system for preordering games?
lol
BBuys been doing that for YEARS
Pay for the preorder, slip prints, come in to buy game, scan slip to take off $5 and go home and play...
preorder codes? tie them to the preorder slip scan, 5/$100 preorder promo? tie it to the scan of the preorder slip when buying the game...
[/QUOTE]
WOW. I was talking about the preorder dlc process which has changed 3 times in the past month. Chill.

So a little "Pro Tip" (sarcasm implied). If you are returning Pre-orders the best time to do it is when you are picking up a game. I got BF3 today and they gave me no hassle when returning my Pre-order for GOW3 and NBA2K12.

Anyone run into getting the wrong value for a game they traded in? Being the idiot that I am sometimes I didn't notice the guy gave me the wrong trade in value for my fifa 11. A $1 value instead of the $11. I'm kind of wondering if I'm just officially screwed due that paper you have to sign in order to finish the transaction at the end. :/

technically you're screwed but you could try talking to the manager of the store.

[quote name='bnizzle']So are we predicting $25 for BF3?[/QUOTE]

Might be more since the multiplayer element theoretically "adds more life" to the game's resale potential but I would cap it at $30.

Picked up my copy today, even got them to match Toys R Us' $10 gift card deal with no hassle. Pre-order DLC code printed on my receipt AND was sent to my email shortly after I picked it up. All told, got everything I was supposed to, plus got the game for $49.99. At my store they have you pick up the pre-orders in the gaming department (if you didn't do store pick-up online that is) so it was extra easy.

I was going to try to get that price match but figured I wouldn't have much luck at midnight. I got my codes as well on my receipt as well as in my e-mail however all 4 of them are the Amazon codes. Really annoying because I already sold three of them on eBay last night. On hold now with Best Buy so hopefully I can get the codes fixed soon.

[quote name='donut']lol what a mess, did someone from Kmart recently get hired? :bouncy:

hey music I'm baffled that when you pick up a preorder and hand them the slip, they do not just ring the game and then scan the slip to take off $5, what's all this BS about return rebuy, need your DLicense etc...
and I do not have to tell you the DLC should print automatically...if they just tied it to the scan of the $5 preorder slip...[/QUOTE]

What do you people mean by "hand them the slip"? Do you mean the preorder slip printed from the kiosk? Half the time they don't give me that back when I preorder. Shouldn't my preorder receipt work? In any case, they didn't scan any slip (except for the preorder receipt to do a return/exchange) on my Rage and Batman preorders and I did end up getting credited for both on the RZ site. So the "preorder" is returmed for $5, the game is rung up for full price, I pay the difference. It seems odd, but it works.

As for this BF 3 promo, I think I'll stay clear. I need 3 more preorders to qualify for the $100, but I was hoping to have some DLC + the game to sell to make my money back on this one (since I have no interest in it and there aren't 5 games from the promo I want to keep). I'll be preordering (and keeping) UC3. Then I just need 2 more. I have MW3 preordered so hopefully the DLC is handled better there (I don't even know what it is).

Does anybody have any insight into if the TIV of Rango will hold? It's currently at $11 base. I want to pick it up within the next few days (currently on sale for $14.50), platinum it, and trade in back in with bonuses to at least get my money back.

I could go into why every bit of that info is needed but in the end its seems BB wants marketshare in video games but doesn't want to change their system so everything sort of gets forced into the current system instead of something new being designed for it. Things like the new overlay when you make a preorder or this new preorder dlc thing is just running on top of the POS stuff. It works but it takes literally forever since someone has to go into different applications and keep asking you for your phone number and wait for stuff to load/activate/etc.

It works but it just takes forever so hopefully in the future preorders will be some sort of exception so it can be processed quicker.

I should also add that this whole preorder thing is under the 'returns' section of their POS system so it might just be a logistical thing. The gaming section probably only makes 5-10% of the revenue of the day so I don't see them making a special system just for that. It would be great and would encourage more people to preorder there if the process was quick and painless but I wouldn't hold your breath. Something like preorder 5/$100 cert is a great idea for both the company and the customer. You're technically getting back $20 per game and also guaranteed revenue for them. It also gives you some pocket change for post-xmas releases and also more revenue for them. The issue is someone has this great idea and its all rolled out before they actually figure out how it will work and that's why you hear people having so many issues. The simple fact that reward zone stuff can't be handled in-store is crazy imo.

After you do your transaction for a preorder you can literally throw the paper from the kiosk away. It means nothing when picking up a preoder. The actual receipt is the only thing that's needed. Suppose you can keep it so you know the release date of the game.

Well, that makes sense. I just don't consider that receipt a "slip" like others are calling it. The preorder kiosk thing is a "slip". They usually do staple that to the preorder receipt but sometimes not. I thought with this talk of slips they had somehow keyed that to the preorder (would be possible if it had a unique code of course).

Anyway, still trying to figure out what 3 games to get for the rest of the promo...

rango takes about 2 days to plat. fun game. i love the hunter s thompson references in some of the levels, and there is a crazy trippy level with mr.timms his fish. great game easy plat.

ps- go to ps3trophies.org and read about how to get 100,000 sheriff stars in less than an hour, i did it that way and it was easy easy.

[quote name='postnet92']what do i ddo i had a coupon for @gamer and my gamer zone hasnt changed to unlocked[/QUOTE]

you will have to go to the store and they will likely rerun the magazine with full unlocked and then credit the money back, thats what the manager did at my store

I don't think anyone can answer that question, but thanks for the post anyway. I had no idea Rango was on sale and I'd like the game for me and my kids (not to flip).

Looks like it is OOS at every store around here but I can just order it to be shipped. If I didn't have oodles of Best Buy credit I'd probably pass but $14.50 + using credit is a no-brainer. The game is still $29.99 at GS and $24.xx at Amazon.

I need a nice, easy break from Dark Souls so if it is a 2-day plat, I'll tackle that when it comes in ;). I'd probably keep it afterwards for the kids though (and not trade it back in).

[quote name='postnet92']what do i ddo i had a coupon for @gamer and my gamer zone hasnt changed to unlocked[/QUOTE]

When that happened to me I just contacted the customer service from myrz.com with the receipt number and it was fixed within 24 hours.

F3AR is a $12 flip from the gamefly sale with the 60% bonus. Best Buy's values have updated too quick lately for me to do air mail flips, but if you want to risk it I thought I'd put it out their for you.

LOTR War in North doesn't seem like it'll make much headlines so will it have a base val of $30 or lower?
I'm debating on whether or not to pre-order because it does come with a $20 credit

For those with a costco nearby, some flips that I just did:
Wii games 9.99
Deadliest Catch $10 base
Man Vs Wild $11 base

PS3/X360 games 19.99
Captain America $18 base

[quote name='kouleefoh']Well the past few days, there hasn't been any major drops, so I'd say a drop is coming![/QUOTE]

Please don't say that lol. The last thing we need is more tiv's getting nuked

Can anyone confirm this? You're talking about at Best Buy correct? If so I am sold. Since I'd be using credit anyway that's like a $40 game day one.

I contacted the my reward zone and they told me to call the store so i call the store and they claim that they were busy and the gaming department would call me before store closing and they didn't

[quote name='KtMack23']F3AR is a $12 flip from the gamefly sale with the 60% bonus. Best Buy's values have updated too quick lately for me to do air mail flips, but if you want to risk it I thought I'd put it out their for you.[/QUOTE]

there are people that will take the risk. My prediction is those bought them @ awd for$21 will profit. Those bought @ gf will lose.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about ordering from amazon and getting the $20 credit, and after beating the game trading it to BBY.

By the way, wherever you pre-order, don't forget you can get a free LOTR WITN T-shit by snapping a picture of yourself with your pre-order receipt and submitting it on the Game's facebook page before the end of the month. Link for the lazy

[quote name='elitedemo']you will have to go to the store and they will likely rerun the magazine with full unlocked and then credit the money back, thats what the manager did at my store[/QUOTE]
so will they give me the sub price back or how did they do it

Contact someone at BB through their forums(called Best Buy Unboxed)

They'll likely ask you to PM some details from your receipt from when you signed up for the @Gamer sub and the receipt from the first attempt at using the coupon to get into the GCU. Hopefully you're like me and kept all of those receipts, otherwise it may take a tad longer than my issue did to resolve. Mind you, my issue took over a month plus to resolve and was finally resolved by the people at the Best Buy Unboxed forums.

I've been thinking about how some of you guys are worried about BB tracking returns. The way BB employees handing pre-order pick up, price match, mistakes by returning/rebuying them. Not sure how they can efficiently track/separate the actual returns from those listed.

In case no one said this yet... Right now you can get F.3.a.r from gamefly for 14.99, and trade-in with the 50% pre-order bonus to best buy for $27. Seemed pretty good.

An outside company tracks returns for them. That's why it's accurate.

yup i have the receipt and would it matter its past 30 days

I bought NHL 12 2 days ago, and I don't like it. I bought it for $40... I have 2 questions:

1. Will the pre-order of Uncharted 3 50% bonus stack with the 25% if you trade in 2 or more games? I read it doesn't, so just making sure.

2. My 2nd question is... right now I can sell NHL 12 for $26. With the pre-order of Uncharted 3, they will give me $39 gift card. My question is, will the preorder make Uncharted 3 $55? So in other words, will the game cost $55 when I spend my $39 gift card on it?

Thank you.

1) Promos don't stack. If you have GCU, you'll get an extra 10% on the trade (60% total). [Pretty sure about that., could be wrong.]

2) The game is going to cost you 59.99 + whatever taxes you have to pay in your state (65.24 here in SoCal). So, your $5 preorder + $39 gift card= $44 towards Uncharted (Unless, of course, you are preordering it with that $39 GC too, then you only have $39 towards the $59.99)

The pre-order is just putting $5 down for the game. It'll still cost you $59.99 + Tax, u just paid $5 already, so u'll pay the rest when u pick up.

And promo doesn't stack.

Oh, okay. Gotcha! Thanks buddy, what is GCU and how do I get one do you know?

$16 for Uncharted 3 sounds like a great deal. :)

I just got back from my first trade in with Best Buy. It went smoothly and the guy trading in my games was knowledgeable and really nice. Had no problem trading in two of the same game either. Took my thumb print, ID, and I had to sign some stuff and was out of there. I signed up for unlock as well. Preordered Skyrim with 60% bonus. Thanks for all the information in the OP, managed to figure out everything I needed to know, thanks again!

Gamers Club Unlocked. $15 bucks I think, and you get a magazine. Ask the CS at Best Buy to help out with that.

It shouldn't matter. Just go to their forums website(scroll to the bottom of the page on BestBuy.com, look for the GET CONNECTED section, look for community forums), register and post a thread asking for help with this issue or simply look for my thread as others with the same issue have been posting in my thread and getting their issue resolved as well. I'm registered on there as CheapestGamer.

Just got an email from my BBY. It's an apology letter regarding the BF3 DLC. All I have to do is show up with all the receipts and they should take care of the rest.

Just post on the BB forums and let them handle it, since calling the 800 number or trying to get it fixed in the store didn't work at all.
