BEST BUY'S VIDEO GAMES TRADE-IN PAGE

Check most up-to-date TIV using BB's Video Games Value Estimator.

Check which BB stores do trade-ins here.
In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.

haha! i've actually made two large purchases recently at best buy using best buy credit. i bought two headsets, tritton 720 and tritton detonators. although i did get the detonators price matched, saving myself 20 bucks.

on topic: was thinking about heading to target today and picking up a set of B2G1 games (with intention of trading them in to best buy). was going to look for:

- GTA IV: Complete
- Driver: Renegade (3DS)

it would be something like 40 + tax spent at target equals 48 base TIV at best buy.

yup, and I actually keep my preorders, so hopefully there's a new 5/100 after the current one.

haha yeah Jason is hella coo, known him for a while now. Mallory is pretty nice too, i helped them out this past weekend. i put down a pre-order for uncharted 3 to boost their numbers, then they're gonna transfer it over to MW3 for me tomorrow.

Yea I just found out that if they reach the pre-orders # they'll get a free game each. That's awesome. I always have about 3 or 4 pre-orders of each game so that should help. haha
I'm going to be writing up an article for a technique on how to remove scratches for my site sometime this week; it can work great for those employees who are more like the latter or if you just have a disc that isn't reading right that you want to play. I'll link it in the thread when it's done.
I have extensive experience with professional disc repairing. If you need any help or additional info for your article, feel free to PM me.

that's pretty cool, then yeah i've done more than my fair share of helping best buy employees get free games.

I was just on the BB website and it said there's a 50% bonus trade in for MW3. maybe it should be added to the op because I'm sure some people are going to want to see this. Also can you trade as many games as you want in one day as long as they are different?

that's what the receipt looks like right? not like an actual receipt :|

Also should say reward zone or something like that as a line item, otherwise it won't get counted towards your 5/100.
Also should say reward zone or something like that as a line item, otherwise it won't get counted towards your 5/100.
That's if you're buying a game and that would be a separate receipt from the trades.
Hey guys, just a heads up for those who preordered MW3, print this coupon for 10% off and present it at the time of pick up. Standard edition comes down to $54+tax and Hardened edition comes down to $90+tax. Limit 3 items per coupon.

Only thing that makes me hesitant is that it says doesn't work on new releases. How strict are they generally about that?
Thanks BigMac, hope they take the print out since it says show your phone.
I have taken this printouts to the store in the past and they have always accepted them. If they give you grief, use an URL http://$$$$$$$/rvlkHcshortener for convenience, and enter the shortened URL in your phone and you'll have the thing on your screen.

Doesn't work for new release DVDs, not video games.

Also, shouldn't be an issue without it being on the phone. I'm guessing you don't have a smart phone which is why you are concerned, if nothing else just show them your non smart phone and say that they sent you the text with the link but obviously you can't view the link on your phone. (That's why they just send you a link to the coupon anyway, for non-smart phone customers)

Oh shit, sorry read the fine print too fast. It said video game hardware haha. Thanks dude! Gonna definately use this.

I had a great day at bestbuy today. I picked up my uncharted 3 preorder, used the @gamer coupon to get batman AA for 9.99 (with no overide necessary) and I found a sealed borderlands goty guide ! Those things are hard to find in stores (from what I've seen) and I really want it to go with my 2 disk copy of the game. How much are those guides worth online anyway ?
Oh shit, sorry read the fine print too fast. It said video game hardware haha. Thanks dude! Gonna definately use this.
LOL. I had the same reaction when I read the fine print. As soon as I saw "videogame" I went: F@#*K! They cockblocked me! and then I read "hardware" and I heard inside my head "Cha-Ching!". I'm picking up 2 Hardened editions. One for me, one for the wife and also some standard editions for fiends and family. (I'm the video game go-to guy for my friends :D). I was thinking, since my purchase will be over $100, Maybe I could stack this other coupon and get gift cards? I don't see applicable restrictions in that regard. You guys think it could work? Has any of you stacked mobile coupons in the past? Coupon #2:

I'm pretty sure yes. Just bring the coupon and your receipt.

Wow, the BB gaming center I go to in Seattle is awesome. The employees who work there are avid gamers and know their stuff when it comes to promotions, and they've allowed me to do a B2G1F from Toys R Us and Target promotion match.

Today I went to pick up Uncharted 3, Batman Arkham City, and Lord of the Rings: War in the North using the B2G1F they allowed me to do. I only paid $57.xx out of my pocket because I traded in Resistance 3, NFS: Hot Pursuit, and Uncharted 2 for $73.xx after 50% towards MW3 and an extra 10% from Gamer's Club.

They also gave me a decent sized, nicely detailed LotR Troll figurine and it was a bonus. LotR and Batman came packed with bonus content.

Will be going back to BB next week for their B2G1F deal. MW3, Skyrim, and something I've yet to decide. BB is awesome!

Can I use this twice? I know it said "limit 1 offer coupon, per household. I'm picking up U3 this Saturday and then MW3 Hardened edition on midnight release.

I just want to make sure. Thanks!

that's a pretty nice figurine, especially since it was free.

but yeah, any confirmation that best buy is having their B2G1 deal next week? i was looking at the thread about it yesterday but can't find it now.

I'm just amazed we're getting hit almost every week with B2G1 sales. My friends have started asking me for deals I know first before they buy any new games now haha!

Yeah, I really want some confirmation on this B2G1 deal. B:AC, Uncharted 3, and MW3 is what I'm considering. I might slip by tomorrow and see if Sarah can get me some confirmation on it.

couldn't you just price match target's current b2g1 free this week and then exchange one of your sealed new release titles on tuesday for the game you want (mw3/skyrim/etc)? just make sure you the game you wanna exchange isn't the free one, and hopefully this way you can avoid any stock depletion that is likely to occur sunday when the bb sale goes live. thats what im gonna try and do anyways. im in san jose btw.

Its possible, but its YMMV with best buy matching a competitor's B2G1. Its always worth a shot to try though.

Nice, always good to see another Bay Area member.

My store is too tight to match Target. I could ask them to do it since it's going to happen any way next week. I'm not too worried about stock depletion next week. I'm tempted to get 2 friends who are definitely interested in buying MW3 to go to the midnight launch with me so I can buy my preordered copy plus do the B2G1 so we each pay $40.

Much to my surprise I got the store I had UC3 preordered at to match the Kmart Gamer Blog $20 coupon deal - they just took $20 off. Works for me! And this was the exact same CS rep who wouldn't match the $10 TRU gift card deal for Battlefield 3 because Best Buy had that exclusive preorder bonus. He said they would match it if I cancelled my preorder and just bought the game regular, but not if I picked up the preorder. He said today that it would have been the same with UC3 if the preorder bonus was worth something but apparently it is not ;). To be honest, I wasn't even aware there was a DLC code provided as a preorder bonus for UC3, but whatever it is, I now have it... According to this guy it was only worth $1 (which is what the package rang up as before he totaled it out).

Thankfully, my local BB has been pricematching KM for me since Resistance 3. Since that point in time, I have always been upfront about asking for the PM & they have matched based on my prior transactions.

Add all of the awesome trade in values & hopefully getting the 5 for $100 on top of the PM's just equals :D

After reading this post I went back and read the last 3 or 4 pages of this thread and couldn't find anything. It would be awesome if this B2G1 happens but it sounds almost to good to be true with MW3 coming out.
Yeah, I really want some confirmation on this B2G1 deal. B:AC, Uncharted 3, and MW3 is what I'm considering. I might slip by tomorrow and see if Sarah can get me some confirmation on it.
Those are the same three games I want. Heck, I'd buy the CE's of all three games if I can find them. Do you think the alleged B2G1 would work on collectors editions?

It would be awesome to buy the CE's for Batman, UC3, and MW3 for $200 total. I have UC3 CE and MW3 CE preordered, so I'd just need to find a Batman CE and probably do a return/rebuy at some point.

If that promotion is in fact coming, I'm sure it works on collector's editions as well since those promotions usually say "valid on regularly priced video games" and the collector's editions are always full price this close to launch date.

I'm on the same boat as you, I'm picking up 2 hardened editions or MW3 at midnight launch. If this promotion is in fact coming it would be AMAZING! It would be like showing up to pick up my pre-orders, and while I'm at it, get the collector's edition of my choice for free. Almost too good to be true!
Just wondering, would a preordered title with a DLC bonus ring up the same as a regular copy?
If you're asking if you preordered something like Uncharted 3 with has bonus dlc (that is not inside the case) then yes it would ring up the same SKU. An example where they would not be the same would be with like Battlefield 3 limited and normal editions since they are a different UPC but it has no dependency on preorder DLC. It's just a different version of the game technically.

I think people are going to be dissapointed waiting for this b2g1 deal. Bestbuy if anything will have this sale after the 5/100 is over or on black friday. I have my uncharted 3 sealed still just in case but I'm not holding my breath.

Target is supposedly limited to games between $9.99 to $79.99. But it works on games that are less, so wouldn't be surprised if it worked for game that were more also.

Much to my chagrin, I have the feeling you're right. I'm still crossing my fingers. But it does sound too good to be true. Retailers plan this things carefully and most of the time they try to dodge the release dates of major games when scheduling promotions since they know they don't need the sales boost in those days and they also know people will pay full price for certain games no matter what. But if against all common sense, this turns out to be true, Christmas is gonna come early for me.
