BEST BUY'S VIDEO GAMES TRADE-IN PAGE

Check most up-to-date TIV using BB's Video Games Value Estimator.

In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.

Hey Bud I think I have a solution to your backlog dilemma, your three options are either:

a) Trade them into BB for 60% bonus
b) Give them to me so I can help you breeze through them
c) Send to Cheapy so he can podcast about what CAG will do to us gaming folks

Rationally speaking, option B sounds pretty good ;)

Budz has a backlog of 120 games. True story. :hot:

So in the mail today I got my packet for the Unlocked membership. It came with a welcome flyer and 2 stickers with your membership number on it. It also came with the following coupons good till 12/31/11.

1. B2G1 Free on New Games (console or PC) up to $39.99

2. B2G1 Free on Pre-owned games

3. Save 10% on Digital gaming purchase

4. Save 50% on any gaming strategy guide.

Not sure if these were known but I thought it was worth reporting.
come to think of it, i never got this so-called unlocked package.
Well I signed up almost day 1 and it just got here...the coupons say good from 9/12/11-12/31/11 but I do not think they were on the ball getting these out.

Is the B2G1 coupon a one time use only? When did you sign up for your unlock membership? I haven't received anything from them. I haven't gotten my magazine yet, but the lady I talked to at the BB store said if I skip one month after signing up then don't worry so much. If I still don't get any magazine this November, then I should call.

Are the coupons inside the magazine, or entirely separate?

Holy....

Talk about an awesome time for a b2g1 on new games...

My unlocked has been screwed up since I tried to redeem the voucher on day 1. Luckily my store just gives me the 10% bonus on trade ins but I guess I am missing out on this packet as I could snag Skyrim and SR3 or AC:R day 1 for $40 without having to worry about PMing ( looking at you Rage)

When did you sign up ? I haven't gotten this (and my first mag for that matter)
Me too, well not counting the xbox games.
since we probably don't live too far from each other maybe you can share the wealth :D

I signed up officially (it took several times) on Sept 22nd. The B2G1 (one time use) is ONLY on games $39.99 and below though so hopefully there is a nice sale on some games in Dec. Also all of this is in store only...not valid for online or in store pickup.

Lol at the first question. I guess hope won over logic when you typed that.

These were sposed to be sent out about 2 months after you signed up.

Didn't follow this thread, but here is the BBY forum thread talking about these packets.

Hey, does anyone in this thread know how long it takes them to add new games to their trade in list? I want to trade in the PS3 version of Sonic Generations so I can nab the PC version on Amazon.

Usually 4 days for main titles. The new xmen and gunstringer took almost, what 3 weeks?

Dance Central 2 is 10 days and still not on the tracker
I was about to do the same thing and in the Trade-In Check Out process, the price dropped to $13. No free rentals on this one anymore.

Can anyone confirm that Fruit Ninja is a download token or not? Would love to be able to keep that game even after trading in.
Someone already mentioned it, but yes it is a seperate token.

The game trades for $17 at Best Buy and can easily be played in a night. So $3 for Fruit Ninja Kinect and a rental of Gunstringer. Or you can get the 60% bonus and gain $7 and get to keep Fruit Ninja Kinect. (All pending on the price holding through tomorrow of course).

It's really a pretty fun game either way, part of me felt a little sad trading it back in but considering I made like $12 on it I couldn't complain.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter came out over two weeks ago and still has no TIV. Other games have TIVs posted before release.
Anyone know how to update the original post's title? Not sure if everyone saw this but the bonus for MW3 trade-in is 50% and will be good with preorder or purchase through 11/12/11.

It's on the BBY Gaming Facebook site.

I know people love Skyrim but this is a lot bigger of a deal.

Thank you...
MW3 is listed in the OP as well, I know it can be difficult to read the giant bold text but it's there, trust me. Skyrim deal ends earlier so I put that in the subject line. Come Sunday MW3 will be there.
Can you use gamers club unlocked to get 10% off used games purchased via the website?
Yes, if your account has been properly linked to bestbuy.com and your GCU is properly applied it will take it off automatically once you add it to your cart.

:bomb: After all of the hassle to finally get my account to show I'm in the Gamer's Club Unlocked I better get these x1000. ;) Not that I'd actually use any of them since most of the pre-owned stuff is overpriced and that B2G1 on new is only UP TO $40:roll:. Although maybe I'd use the 50% on a guide and grab the Uncharted 3 one for the hell of it.

I wonder if PSN/XBL cards count as 'digital gaming purchases'.;)

You inspired me to take a moment and count out what I currently have, keep in mind that I've traded in a ton of my own games the past few months.

I have exactly 155 Xbox 360 games (including 5 compilation disc with multiple games - i.e. Xbox Live Arcade Compilation, Dreamcast Collection, etc.). (I've also got 5 Xbox games, a dozen SNES and NES games and roughly 200 N64 games - but I collect the N64 games). Of that 155, 12 are games I have zero intention of ever getting rid of. 4 games in that collection have been beaten but I've held on to them for a while either due to it not being worth trading or because my nephew likes playing them etc. So all told, my back log of Xbox 360 games is 139.

Fun side note, I kept having to come back and update my total game count cause I kept finding games in drawers, under magazines, etc.

That sounds like my house. I have PS1 titles I was supposed to put on a shelf a while ago stacked up here n there. I have a copy of :ps3:Toy Story 3 that I got from Target for $7.50 buried on a chair that is loaded up with bags containing various game buys/etc.

It's definitely NOT fun being a CAG sometimes, especially when you realize that you've waited 6 months too long to dump something and it has exactly zero value left.:whistle2:#

Umm... I'd be very afraid to do a count of sealed and unplayed used games in my house. I haven't even been in this for that long and I'm sure I have hundreds. I just got back into console gaming with the Gamecube, so I have a lot of GC and PS2 stuff in addition to GBA/DS/PS3/Wii/360, and even a few PC titles I got cheap from places like Circuit City - nearly all thanks to CAG of course.

A small flip for you guys. Apache Air Assault :ps3: is $12.99 at GF with free shipping. TIV at BBY is $13 base/ $20.80 after bonuses. I can confirm if you order 3 or more games in the same order from GF, they will ship together in a priority mail box, and show up at your doorstep in 3-4 days of less. For those of you who wake up with panic attacks in the middle of the night because you were having a nightmare about dropping TIVs, don't fret, I also got you covered. You can lock a trade for this game with amazon for $13 right now, making it basically a free rental just in case the TIV drop at BBY. The game is rated with 4.5 stars @ amazon. It might even be worth to try.

If you order 7+ games from GameFly, they will ship via FedEx and require a signature upon delivery. Stalled my trading for a day or two on multiple occasions.

Just... useful information to some. Maybe :p

Local Half Price Books finally dropped all their shitty PS2 sports games to $1. Tried to get them to give em to me for 50 cents each since I was buying all of them but they wouldn't budge. Still, it was $1 -> $1.60 at best buy and I was making stops at both places already anyway.

Then they gave me a real hard time because I had canceled too many pre-orders and i was "gaming the system for bonus credit".

I frankly think it's bullshit that best buy management would confront you in the store because of making too many pre-order cancellations and basically say that you're screwing them over.

I mean, you're spending that store credit there anyway, whether it was on the game you pre-ordered or not. And I think it was because I pre-ordered the 5 for $100 deal and then cancelled all of them at once when I realized i'd rather stick with the kmart coupons. Also I picked up forza 4 not at the store I pre-ordered at, then refunded the pre-order later. And with Space Marine they never refunded my pre-order when I bought it and I had to go back to refund it later also.

I think that if they're going to get into this "pre order and get a bonus credit when you trade in" stuff they need to realize that they are not going to get a 100% pick-up rate, and they can't start "calling you out" when you don't buy your pre-orders or refund them.

Best Buy is just getting shitty about this gaming initiative. I mean, what if people cancel because the game turned out to be shit? No more bonuses for you? I eventually got them to give me the skyrim bonus and I will actually be buying it there. I had about 25 PS2 titles(with cases and everything this time) that turned into almost $40 towards skyrim. Not the biggest flip, but nice nonetheless.

Traded in some games today and i got a free UC3 poster for being such a "excellent trade in customer" haha. I guess these are the ones they were giving out at the midnight launch. Pretty cool. Also, i asked about the B2G1 and he said he hasn't heard anything, so i guess it's not happening.

Yeah, I gotta say, I completely disagree with you. The incentive is to preorder and buy games there.

right, but i guess this goes back to my stance on the amazon "we ban you if you call customer service too much with complaints" stuff.

You run promos, sometimes people do what you want with those, sometimes they don't. you don't confront the customer when they don't do what you want them to.

I think cancelling those 5 pre-orders at once was probably the biggest problem. I just realized the deal wasn't for me, and I'd rather stick with kmart coupons. The other 2 returns were because they don't fucking know how to redeem pre-orders at the customer service desk. Not even my fault.

I have a few random ones to cancel, though I have been picking up most of them. I'm just waiting till later to cancel them and will spread them out - maybe 1 a month for 3 months starting in December or something like that. It shouldn't be any sort of "pattern" if it is done that way. So far I have only canceled 1 and picked up 4, so I should be good!

Your big mistake was asking for returns on $5 preorders. You didnt practice good discretion. For $5 id rather not wait in line and remind CS my face everyday what im there for. Seriously for $5 when you're netting a good amount of credit is a small convenience to pay for. The saying dont shit where you eat comes to mind. Im not surprised you got called out on it.

yeah but it was 5 of them so it was more like $25..

anyway if they want to give people a hard time about it and if its that big of a deal, they should just stipulate that the full value of your trade ins have to be applied to a pre-order for the bonus and then apply the bonus during the transaction with the purchase of the game.

I ran my pre-orders that I intended to pick up on my account, and the ones I was just using for the bonus on my husband's. I am lucky that I have 2 Best Buys withing 30 minutes. I use the close one to "make friends", get promos, trade ins, pick ups, etc. Then I use the further one to have my husband return the pre-orders.

I figure if one of us gets banned or draws too much attention, we can use the other account or store.

Watched someone get told they were banned from trading tonight, they had all the gamefly trades. Certainly made me feel paranoid as hell i deserve it.

I've been exchanging my preorders for other goods. I wonder if that makes a difference.

io, just remember after 30 days it requires a managers approval.

Apparently just like Gamestop, Best Buy does not understand that sometimes people change their minds. Of course the $10-20 credits from Amazon towards a future game purchase really helped to sway me from buying from BB. I originally had intended on grabbing at least five of the 5/$100 promo games from there, but with shitty DLC codes as the 'incentive' for picking up said pre-orders I just couldn't do it.

you people just need to do some calculating and if the $5 you're spending on the preorder is not worth the extra 20% (cause there's 3 for 30%) then don't do the preorder. Consider it the cost of doing business.

For pete's sake, don't cancel your preorders.

IATCG - they fully expect people to change their minds. But not about 5 preorders at a time. Or 9 out of 10 preorders. Especially if every preorder was to get a trade in bonus.

What exactly happened there?

Interesting. Did you get to overhear what was said?

Yes please more on this story.

Also, Confoosious, io and donut are right, you can't go cancelling all of your preorders or a high percentage thereof (and certainly not at once).

I've cancelled three and picked up 9 or 10 at this point. And my cancellations were for pretty good reason:

1. was an unintentional duplicate- I did the 5 game preorder in July and didn't realize that I picked batman as part of that 5 when I re-preordered batman several months later.

2. I preordered dark souls, but they gave a free 10 gift card with the online purchase. I cancelled the preorder and picked up the online order at one time so they could see that I wasn't pointlessly cancelling the preorder.

3. I decided to go with the :360: version of a game rather than the :ps3: version so I again bought a game and cancelled the preorder in one trip to the customer service counter.

yeah, the 5 for $100 wasn't even for a trade in promo, i just went in and did it with some regular ass "games I had at home" trade ins, not even flips.

Because I wasn't paying for the games 100% with credit and because the kmart coupon discounts are instant, not "pay full price now and get $100 back later" like the best buy deal, I cancelled.

I have canceled 2 in-store pre-orders and probably 2 more. I have one online pre-order that I won't be picking up. I already have 4 games out of the 5 for the promo and have several purchases here and there both online and in-stores. BB should check people's history before they decide to ban anyone. By the end of the year, I would probably have returned nearly a dozen items but bought just as much.

Of course they do. It's not like you walk in the door, they don't like the cut of your jib and ban you.
