In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.
So before a shit storm erupts in the thread, just to clarify: you had previously traded in two copies of a game, and today you went to trade in 2 more and were denied since it would be more than 3, correct?

I imagine this could be a cross-program thing, course it could also just be one store being really on top of their shit. Either way, we know that sooner or later the limits will start to be imposed, so no real big surprise.
Today I traded in and got the third degree because my games look good - too good - and there was no way they could have been played by anyone no matter how uptight they are about taking care of them (implying that they're stolen). I swear that every bb game department employee thinks they're fucking Columbo around here.

You are correct and for further clarification, it was at two different stores.

why dont people just tell the truth. I tell the guys, I bought the games from gamefly or amazon, just to trade in and theyre cool with it, dont even question that Im trading in doubles of four or five games at a time.

This is really stupid of them because now you're just gonna make the discs look bad on purpose. Like take the disc out and leave em in the trunk on the way to BB.

As soon as they make any kind of mention about having more than one I just say I picked them up from a garage sale for [insert a price cheaper than trade in].

In this case no doubles and everything was straight from my own collection. He also accused me of finishing Arkham City too fast. I'm more than happy to tell the truth - it just so happens that the two closest stores to me do _not_ have employees that are anything approaching "cool." I've been accused by a manager of stealing for asking to cancel a preorder, I've had security called to the trade-in desk because I brought in two copies of two games, and told by a customer service employee when picking up a cheapo copy of Child of Eden that I was lucky I was getting away with it or some such thing.

I'm a grown married adult with children. I always treat people with respect and kindness and if I'm ever denied anything I just thank them and go about my business. Not a big flipper, only really do this to fund my very meager video game collection.

When I worked at this same Best Buy 15 years ago they encouraged us to physically tackle anyone that may be stealing so the mentality shouldn't be _that_ surprising, but I'd just like to be treated with a modicum of respect.

Write an email or call up corporate and tell them you're fucking sick of being treated like a thief. The jerks at your store need a wake-up call.

I flip games regularly at 2 or 3 stores and none of the employees have a problem with it. Recently I've been bring in about 20 titles in multiples of 3 and I get weird looks from customers and a random BBY employee walking by but the general manager and gaming employees all know what I'm doing and are fine with it.

The way I see it, I'm improving their used game inventory and spending tons of money in the store. So far in addition to the $4,000 I've spent on kindle cards for more games to flip, I've bought a projector, PS3, and I'm going to buy a new oven next week.

I think the most suspicious thing you can do is feel guilty for trading in games you're flipping and making up some excuse is also dumb. If you purchased your games and are selling them for a profit, then you're doing the exact same thing Best Buy is doing.
I've been asked multiple times if I'm a videogame tester. lol
Wow lol. You should see my store. The manager and the employees always gather around and play this guessing game they call "how much today !". The manager is always in awe with a big smile on his face. A few days ago they told me that I broke the record for the biggest trade in there. Of course the people picking up their call of duty preorder on launch day didn't like it lol

Pete should tell the employees how it was back in the day! If they have a problem tackle him not give him dirty looks!

strait, what new record did you set (#games, total credit, time wasted, etc)?

Well I went in tonight to dump all my stuff because the 50% promos end tonight. We'll see what happens tomorrow... could be telling.

The system isn't flagging me or anything for that matter. But I also have the most badass gaming employees ever; cool w/ all of them including the sup.

Pretty sure I've done worse than most here so the flagging seems random at best. Make some friends with the employees, rofl.

That being said... I got rid of every single new release this holiday season (for at least $40+ in credit) except for Skyrim and my Dark Souls CE... Stupid BF ridiculous deals. My plan is to just rebuy everything at $30 :)

For my store it is:

Games 45= (mostly old ps2 games)
Time wasted = almost an hour
Total = around 140 $
Employees watching = around 8
Pissed off 15 year old cod players = 22 lmao

Yeah I had the same thing happen. The record at the time was $800 and I think I had $960. I didn't piss of COD players since I saw about 8 of them in line at the gaming desk and decided to just buy kindle cards instead of trading in games that day.

I went to Bestbuy to trade in some games yesterday and saw a new gaming stuff. He told me he had been working at GameStop and just barely started at BBY. He also told me he will be promoted to gaming supervisor in the near future. But I did a free training for him and doubt he is even a competent gaming staff. Here is what he did:

1. He told me the Gamer Club 10% bonus cannot be stacked on these 50% trade in bonuses.
2. He insist giving me only 40% bonus even if I showed him the MW3 receipt. I had to point out the 50% MW3 bonus option on his computer screen.
3. He asked me if I have another phone number to look up my Gamer Club information since he didn't know to put Dash between phone numbers.

He's perfectly qualified for kmart

I suppose I'm thankful I'm in Best Buys home state of Minnesota - plenty of them around the metro area to spread the wealth - not that I do anything against policy - I dont even do 3 of each game - only ever do 2 - I help them out, they certainly help me out in return. They've taken care of gifts for the holidays with no money out of my pocket.. I dare not get into numbers - but the gaming department at the flagship store are quite nice to me so its all lovely.. :)

On topic, when do the new trade in deals usually pop? Early morning, yeah?... Wonder how long they can keep up this 50% trade in deals...for myself anyways, even with Kmart kicking ass every week - this is MY deal of the year...especially on top of the 100.00 in certs for 5 preorders....

:lol:Yeah. He sounds like a typical former GS drone. Must sell preorders while mentioning that you'll never be able to find it if you don't PO....must pester customers with incorrect info....act like douche at all times.;)

It'd be funny if he gets fired for being a know-it-all to customers and then ya see him at his next job n ask him how much longer before he's gonna be the gaming supervisor at BB just to rub it in.

:lol:In order to qualify to work at Kmart you have to be a skilled magician n able to disappear for 20-45 minutes at a clip w/o anyone being able to find you.

I am there often enough that the security and employees know what I am doing. Mainly because I am honest with them. When the ask I tell them, I picked it up for cheap and want to bring my business here. Simple as that. The security guy at the front usually asks how much I made each visit.

LOL. That's funny but oh so true.

Just an FYI, the 50% Trade-In Bonus for Max Payne 3 pre-order is in this weeks ad, so it looks like we'll have that for another week (November 13th - 19th)...
Does anyone know if TIV's ever increase? Or do they only go down, not up.
It is rare; however, they do increase. I traded in Crackdown 2 for $4 at one time. A week later it was $6.

It seems there is no 50% trade in promotion this coming week.

I'm afraid that after the saints row 3, ass creed and max payne 50% promos are expired that we won't get anymore for the year. I guess the generic 40% plus the 10 from the card is still good

I'm not so sure the lock in conspiracy is real, I traded mine in yesterday as well, and I'm guessing everyone got their gamefly packages and ran to BBY, so the drop is due to a large # of that game being traded in a single day.

That Xbox Biggest Loser was going strong for a few weeks now. I don't know if it was GF that shut it down so much as the deals Target had over the last two weeks. :)

The 50% bonus for Max Payne 3 had an expiry date of 11/12 and is not listed on the trade-in site, but shows in this weeks ad. Question is is it in their system? If not, maybe you can argue and get comp'd via a separate GC or discount. Kind of like they did when the 4/$20 promo wasn't working.

I still haven't got my "The Biggest Loser" from GF. GF had to ship this separate by itself and i'm probably SOL now. Oh well, this is the cost of doing business w/ BBY

Well it was fun while it lasted. I just tried to do a trade in and when he entered my driver's license info it showed that I have been banned from trading in used merchandise. There was a phone number to call and speak with Asset Protection and I tried calling but it was busy. Maybe I'm not the only one with this problem. Now I need to find some friends to trade in my existing inventory of about 300 games.

That sucks man. I'm sorry. Did you return pre-orders and did you trade in more than 3 copies of games per system?

Yeah, some details would be nice.
I mean if the guy says he still has 300 games left to trade in, i'm pretty sure he's well over 3 per year limit.
Oh I'm sure he deserved the ban, just curious as to the why.

All these people posting about being banned, but no details. I am pretty sure they are cracking down on the people who have been abusing the 3 per year limit by going over it. Like that one post he has 300 more games?

That's what I'm thinking. I'm going to have to personally chart every game for each platform I trade in so I don't go over the limit

he also admitted to trading at multiple stores. I'm still wondering if this is triggered by the store or corporate. I'm betting store, because so many of us has traded 4-5 copies of a game, especially if you trading gamefly. Crysis has been available multiple times over the last few months.

There's only a month and a half left in the year so you may want to wait on that.

Speak for yourself, I've never traded in more than three of any give game over the course of trading in games.

I've traded in multiple copies (3 per day of the same game per system). The employees actually encouraged me to do so and the supervisor even spoke with the district manager, who was ok with what I did. It was also no secret where I got my games from, since I showed them my receipts. When I first started I would go to one specific store and even bought the employees some stuff after I did several trades. I could tell you each of their names at the gaming department. Even the security guards were cool with me. They only put a sticker on one game or even just let me walk in since they saw me often. It's not the specific stores that are banning people. It has to do with the trade in system itself. Dealtree is still running their stuff so I'm betting it has to do with them.

A tip for those who do multiple trades. Always use the gift card you just received to pay for anything, such as the 5 pre-order. It will make things easier if you ever lose your card. This is how I know that Dealtree is still running things in the background.

Sorry for not giving more details earlier. I only had a moment to post. I was definently trading in more than 3 of a game but never at one time. All of the stores that I was trading at were aware of this and gave me the okay before I started buying more than 3 of a game. In fact one time I accidentally brought in 6 copies of 1 game and the employee caught it and said I better come back tomorrow with the other 3.

To be honest there were several things that might have triggered the ban. I had traded in up to 30 of 1 game over a couple of weeks, and I also was buying lots of kindle cards (about $4,000 & up to $1000 in 1 transaction). I know it was kind of stupid to buy so much at once, but many times they didn't have any gift cards in stock and I was using up all my credit on amazon within a couple of days. he store managers knew I was doing this, and they understood the reason was so that I could buy more games from amazon warehouse deals to trade in.

I actually worked for Best Buy Corporate in their Inventory Control Department from December 2000 to about a year ago. I quit to be a full-time stay at home dad, and even if I can no longer trade games I'm grateful for the extra income I made in the last month.

I have been told many times by different managers and gaming employees that they appreciated my trades, so I'm assuming the huge number of games I was trading was flagged by asset protection at corporate.

I'll post back here if I have any update after talking with Asset Protection.

If you want to ensure you're not also banned I would suggest you stick to 3 games or less of each title. It kind of sucks that I can't trade in my games anymore. Despite flipping games for a profit I was also buying at least 1 or 2 new release games for myself each week but with Skyrim and Saints Row 3 I'm sure I won't need any more games for awhile.

Sounds like you probably got banned for excessive trade ins. Around how many games have you traded in?

This sound exactly like my experience as well.
