In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.

From the sound of it, pretty much all the people who actually trade in games to Best Buy are being banned. Curious to see what happens in 2 months when their trade in program has suddenly come to a halt.

I too want to check, but I just don't have anything to trade in at the moment. Funny how many are getting banned at the exact time they've started trading in less. Considering my last trade was for just under $400, I imagine my ban is inevitable. There is one blue shirt where I go, the supervisor no less, that might override it for me, but oh well. I mostly hope I'm not banned because this was really helping to motivate me into working through my backlog finally.
however, I recomend all you 20 somethings banging 40 year olds to be careful as a buddy of mine did that when he was 20 or so and the b**** was crazy. She got pregnant and "fell in love" with him. WOOPS.
You need to stick to ones that have been divorced. They just aren't looking for the same thing. The 40 year olds that haven't ever been married are desperate, the ones that have been and went through the divorce are just having fun. (Add the words "most likely" after every statement in the last three sentences)

My wife even remarked that I didn't seem too upset about the ban. The thing is if they're going to suddenly be the trade in police, I don't want to be bothered. For example, certain games I end up owning multiple times before/after I play them. I don't want to be bothered monitoring whether I traded it in twice already.

Further, I'm going to use a football analogy. The straight edge football programs always end up losing to the teams with guys getting arrested and having recruiting violations. In my opinion, you cannot compete with gamestop's used game sales unless your willing to get your hands a little dirty. You need high volume traders. Soccer moms that bring in Madden 2008 for the Wii, aren't going to help. Conversely, those of us that bring in games like Rage, Batman, Forza, etc. at least give them a fighting chance to lure away some of Gamestop's business.

With all these bans and hammered trade-in values, it sounds like Best Buy doesn't want to continue the trade-in program much longer.

I haven't traded anything in to them in nearly 2 weeks, because frankly there are better options since they've dropped so many of their values. Although this makes me want to get a small trade together to check on my status with them.
He probably traded in 50 billion copies of SFU2
So says the guy that will likely find out he's banned out tomorrow too. ;)

No Fallout New Vegas was my vice. I do recall trading in SWFU II, but that's about it.

I launched a preemptive "hey I heard a bunch of people are being banned from trading" conversation with one of my favorite blue shirts. He said "really, I haven't seen anything like that in this store." We went through the trade, calculated the trade in total with bonus, plugged in my number and then.."Oh my god, you're right. This says you're blocked from trading."

It said according to him something violating policy and gave a number to call.

I got sick (the more serious kind of sick) about two months ago, so I haven't really done anything but trade in the games that I knew I could buy for less on Black Friday. Based on that, I'm pretty sure they went retroactive and banned me based on FO:NV.
Sorry to hear that man.
Thanks Yanksfan. I sincerely appreciate that. I'm going to be ok but I have some possibly permanent nerve problems. It is really frustrating and can be very mentally challenging, but I spent five days in the trauma ward of a hospital when all hell initially broke loose. You know the saying "somebody always has it worse", well one day 2 people were brought in after being hit by cars. They were yelling out in pain for hours. It was rough.

Anyway, now that CAG is down with my medical issues, let's move on to happier topics.

Have to say, was debating getting a 3DS at Best Buy this week, but I'll definitely do a test trade first. If I'm banned I'm either going to cash out my credit on a big ticket item, or just keep some GC for the occasional good sale and move the rest to Amazon. If I'm not banned, I'll get the 3DS knowing I can re-coup some of that credit (hopefully) in the not too distant future.

Actually, screw that. if I'm banned I'm buying a ton of visa gift cards and then buying $50 amazon cards from target and getting a $10 gift card for every one! Muaahahahaha!

Got the ban hammer today at Best Buy. Guess IM not surprised seeing as how theres others getting banned recently. Ended up having my friend go back in and trade for me. Lost my Unlocked bonus but not that big a deal. Still sucks because I loved trading it at Best Buy. Did kind of abuse the trade in over the last 2 months though. lol. Was nice while it lasted.

Would this condition cause you to make out with a blueshirt video game employee :) or was it caused by making out with a blueshirt :O

Wow sorry to hear about that bgame.

This must be the 2nd wave of bans that just came out. I forget who made the point but I think they were spot on. Corporate is cracking down on the top level abusers and going down from there. Geez, I'm worried now that I'm next. I did a test trade last weekend and everything went fine. Will try it out tomorrow and report my findings.

I've only gone over the limit twice and both of those were only due to having to trade in 2 different titles 4x total in the last 6 months on accident. I had forgotten to check my spreadsheet before I went to the store.

FWIW, if you discover that you are banned, I'd highly recommend either spending the GC right away on something, or converting it to something BB doesn't control (like the visa or amazon cards), because they could be planning to drain the GC from the people they ban. Obviously, that would be pretty extreme and probably illegal, and I think the chance of them doing so is very, very slim, but it is something you can prevent and which would be pretty devastating if it happened.

Thanks Confoosious, like I said, somebody always has it worse.

Anyway, we're talking months ago so I'm going from memory, but in the interest of being candid probably 8-10 of the PS3 version and about 5 of the 360.

SWFU II I'd say was maybe 6 of the PS3, but only 2 or 3 of the :360: version.

Aside from those (and possibly 4 or 5 of Dead Rising 2 :ps3:) I don't really recall any other significant issues:

I know I did 3 of child of eden :360: and 3 each of Two Wolds II :ps3: and :360:

I think those are the only things of any real significance.

ALSO, let me be clear that the ban is my fault. I accept that. My prior trades came back to haunt me and that's just the way it is. Complaining would be pointless and really unjustified. I broke the rules, I accept the consequences.

So, once again, thank you guys for the nice words.

With so many bans coming down, and given BB's completely inept ability to code anything, I'd say there is a good chance that somebody screwed something up and accidentally banned everyone that has traded in. Has anyone traded in this afternoon and NOT found out they are banned?

That was me. Fun story, I was actually talking to someone who works at Best Buy Corporate at a neighborhood party last weekend, and we got into a discussion of all the things Best Buy could be doing, should be doing and some of the stuff they need to stop doing. He said I seem to know the company better than most employees and wanted to know how I knew so much having never worked there. Too bad his resolution to get me a job at BB corporate immediately came around 1:30 am and the 8th glass of wine.

How sad is it that this is a total and legitimate possibility?

Tried to trade today and found out I got banned. Have only traded 2 times at best buy starting 3 weeks ago. Never traded more than 3 copies of each game but, I did trade in about 35 games each time.

Huh... if true this adds some credence to either the:

"They want to end their program and are starting to just banning everyone who has traded before to slow it down," and the, "An idiot in the IT department accidentally clicked "select all" when applying bans this morning." theories.

See I think high volume may be more problematic than anything. Sure, my FONV trades were bad, but I think the fact that I traded a bunch of games over time, did me in.

I suppose it's possible but I wouldn't bet on it. Look at the people that got banned, it seems like most of them have acknowledged going over the limit or going overboard with the rules. As Bgame pointed out, if you break the rules you gotta live with the punishment.
That was me.
Yeah you called it. I don't have a good feeling for a lot of the regular posters in here.
Okay, so is there anyone who tried to do a trade in today that wasn't banned?

How crazy is it that we even have to ask that question?
If funco is telling the truth, then I think my theory is correct. Lolz. Nobody has reported a trade in this afternoon I think.

Hey BB Jr. Detectives, call corporate and tell them that they screwed up the bannings.

my friend traded my games in for me after I found out I was banned and they let hi trade, so the everyone is banned theory isnt right. And my friend has traded in before.

That'll never happen. The giftcard given to you was actually part of a signed contract (they agreed to pay you that gift card in return for the games you traded in).

I feel like doing 35 games like every saturday is probably enough to get on the radar, but if he only did it twice and didn't go over the 3x limit, then it makes no sense. People clearing out all their games for BB credit is supposed to be what BB wants!
And my friend has traded in before.
That was going to be my next question. I guess I was wrong :(

That'll never happen. The giftcard given to you was actually part of a signed contract (they agreed to pay you that gift card in return for the games you traded in).

I'm aware of this, which is why I said it is a small possibility, but it is a possibility nonetheless -- seriously, what would YOU actually be able to do if they drained your GC? Nothing, you're not going to sue for 500 bucks in BB credit and there are not enough flippers that any lawyer would take some kind of class action, so BB would be without reprimand if they did it.

Lol just wanted to say I unintentionally flipped a game on Tuesday. Bought Metroid other m for $5 on BF, used the club Nintendo points code, and after bonuses got $9 for trading it in

Individually you might be right, but the bad press and even the possibility of a full investigation by the FCC (or better business bureau removing their accreditation) would be enough incentive to avoid such an act when your financial outlook is as bad as Best Buy's is right now.
Yeah, I could walk in tomorrow and trade 160 games and not a single one would be a "flip."
I'll just go back to amazon, trades and the occasional ebay/craigslist sale (or maybe even microcenter) if I am. Was nice just kind of having one destination though, even if occasionally I'd get a buck or two more elsewhere, I had so much cred at BBY it was worth it to just trade there instead. The big change will be the inevitable fact that I will buy less knowing I can't get as much back.

I think Bestbuy has this crazy idea that "normal" people would only trade 2-5 games at a time and maybe once or twice a month. Anymore than that, they group u as re-seller, and ban you.
Am I the only one here who isn't banned ?
i traded something in last sat. and nothing as of then.

also, for the peeps that have been banned, have any of you tried to buy a used game to see if they ban you from getting the extra 10% off a used game along with the trade in ban?

Unless you traded today I wouldn't be so confident in that statement. :whistle2:#

wow all the banning news, wondering if I got banned, I have only traded in 8 games to bestbuy in the past 6 months...

Ive looked into somethings and this is what I know.
A 3rd Party company handles all of the customers trade in info.
ex: Your name, DOB, where you live etc...
BestBuy only sets the criteria for what will get you banned.
Trade over the 3x limit within a year and eventually you'll be banned.
It just takes time to get to everyone.

Which is also why the message that pops up on screen has an override feature, because BestBuy isnt responsible for who's actually being banned. If there's an error that override is what covers them.

As far as which company handles it my guess would be the same company who handles all of their returns, and they track it by using your ID.
NOT by using your RewardZone account.

So Kindle Cards, Visa GCs, and flipping from BB back into BB have nothing to do with it.
Tried to trade today and found out I got banned. Have only traded 2 times at best buy starting 3 weeks ago. Never traded more than 3 copies of each game but, I did trade in about 35 games each time.
This makes me worried. I've only recently started trading at bby. I have done 3 transactions over the past month but nothing like that volume though. I think I only traded 10 to 15 games overall. I maxed at 3 per title & system on one or two titles but never went over that limit.

Hmm, I wonder if I'm banned, would suck as I just used the last of my credit. But it's almost too hard now to flip, and microcenter has become my main source of profit, although trading there is a royal pain in the ass.

i would presume i should have already been banned and I guess the manager/supervisor or someone did the override? When I walk in the store without a stack of games everyone gives me grief and iv been telling them lately amazon and tru and other places are getting more of my trades since their tivs have been going down. idk tho.

I don't even get stickers on my games or my receipt checked on the way out about half the time now. They just look at me and say, "yeah, yeah, just go, you're fine."

traded in 6 games yesterday (Thursday)... no issue yet for me!

Some small flips from GS B2G1 Free sale to Best Buy:
Blackwater (XB) GS: 26.99 BB: 18.00
Disney Universe (XB) GS: 26.99 BB: 18.00
Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 (XB) GS: 26.99 BB: 17.00
Fighters Uncaged (XB) GS: 17.99 BB: 12.00

About a 50% profit on each with the 25% for trading in two games (better profit if using 40% promo)

Does anyone know if BestBuy is going to carry the Pearl Pink 3DS & Nintendogs + Cats $169.99 bundle at all? I traded in some stuff earlier this week for the bonus credit to put toward this but there's nothing on their site about it at all. I just bought a black system to take advantage of the deal with the intent of exchanging it for the pink one when it hopefully arrives there. I asked the associate there who helped me if that was cool and he said that wouldn't be a problem. Problem is that he wasn't sure if or when they'd be in stock.

Kind of sucks but if I don't see the bundle there tomorrow then I'm just going to hope that ToysRUs has them in stock (they give a $40 GC and a neat bobblehead stylus).

Nope 10% is still taken off as GCU is seperate from trade in

Btw just bought DS2 used for $8.99 which means it discounted fine through in store pickup.

Time for microcenter to feel my flipping wrath. BTW found a ton of games I overlooked at BBV because I was only looking at BBY TiV and not AMZ also.

Turned $30 of nukem to $52 BBV cred , $46 AMZ cred and a whopping $150 of MC cred (thanks to some DS2 restocks and a couple Crysis 2 price mistakes they honored). As far as ROI today was my best day. Too bad I had to run all over to 3 BBV, MC and BBY.

shhhh.

Yikes, people... I went to Best Buy today but didn't trade. It was just as well as the regular game guy wasn't there anyway. It was someone I'd never seen before so he probably wouldn't have done the override. Now I feel like I have to go in tomorrow and check.
