In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.

I'm still good. Traded 5 games each at 3 different BB's yesterday. And I'm definitely over the 3 game/system limit on multiple titles. Maybe they just haven't gotten to me yet...

I've spread out my titles over 5 BB's now, but they all are under the same ID (driver's license) - but they do seem to need to enter my personal data at each store. Don't know if that matters at all.

I haven't purchased anything other than electronics, systems and games. No returns, no cancelled pre-orders and no GC's.

They also have a heck of a time getting my thumbprint. Big thumbs.

BTW - are these bans corporate? Has anyone that's been banned checked other BB's outside of their "area"? Or online?

They have to type in the information every time to make sure they get it right. Basically, by typing everything in they make sure they don't accidentally tie your trade to someone of the same name in their system (being nation wide, yes your information is the same across every Best Buy not just one store or district, that is a possibility after all).

I also highly doubt that banns will be limited to a district or store. Just saying.

ok, McLovin. :p

I'm good with it. They did what they think they should do. As I said in my prior post, I think to some extent they are cutting off their nose to spite their face. My prediction is that they will be out of the game trading business within a year.

Yeah agreed. I think Best Buy is in over its head. Last trade in the girl was afraid to give me bonus to supplement their system being down and not allowing my 10% bonus. I was trading in more than 2 games and was fine with the 25% bonus. But then I asked for either the 30% with a preorder or the 50% for buying a game (to see if she was cool with it). She kinda freaked out and spewing how the police are watching their tradeins and how they do it. Like if she would have given me the 50% and I didnt buy a game, the police were gonna arrest someone.

I dont blame her tho, she was a scared peon working for that shitty company. She didnt want to lose her job. Even got a DM who was walking by, who then started talking about how she couldnt changed the values in they system like thats what I was asking her to do.

I asked to just go through with it and do the 30% and Ill show her that it doesnt have to be in the same transaction. She didnt even understand that I was taking a 5% cut cause the GC was not working. I was about ready to choke someone. She kept saying "so you want me to give you more?" when I asked to do the 30%.

Seriously, they dont know their policies as it is, this whole tradein stuff has been a hassle for the employees cause they dont know either. Then they fucking give a stupid answer cause they have no other answer then they have to stick to that stupid answer when it is wrong.

I hope one day Best Buy goes out of business and I have/had a part in it. They have been killing it lately with their sales but damn they are frustrating to work with. No customer relation at all.

That's where we differ. I never want to see a company (even Gamestop) go out of business.

Wow! I haven't traded in a month, and I guess not so surprised to see people are getting banned again. I'd like to trade and see if I' am, but BB TIV has really gone down. I've only gone past 3 titles twice and purchased a visa card twice. I never traded anything in big volumes. I'm wondering if it also has to do with the games we trade in. If a few of them don't work then we get ding for it, or if most of them are from GAMEFLY.
That's where we differ. I never want to see a company (even Gamestop) go out of business.
I was talking more like 10-15 years, but fuck them. Get another company that can do it better. Id rather see Gamestop go out of business tho. Best buy can stick around if they do cheap games like they have.
Add me to the banned list, it was good while it lasted. At least I got a playstation 3d display for about $120 oop.
You to ? ! I'm scared to do a test trade in but ill have to do it at some point. You should try trading online

I don't think I ever hear either way, but Godly did you get banned in any of these last 2 waves? I haven't done a trade in a few weeks, so I'm curious about my account now.
You are now.... lol.
I didn't go over 3 this trade, if I were to be banned it would have happened already. I traded in a ton during the B1G1 at BBV and again during the 5 for $30 to the tune of $1800. I'm over the 3 limit on about 10 different games - on SWTFU2 I must have traded in 12 for Xbox and 9 on PS3.

'twas a joke...

As it seems like anyone that trades in period has been getting banned.

They'll get around to you eventually.

Reposting what I've already said:
Ive looked into somethings and this is what I know. A 3rd Party company handles all of the customers trade in info. ex: Your name, DOB, where you live etc... BestBuy only sets the criteria for what will get you banned. Trade over the 3x limit within a year and eventually you'll be banned. It just takes time to get to everyone.

Which is also why the message that pops up on screen has an override feature, because BestBuy isnt responsible for who's actually being banned. If there's an error that override is what covers them.

As far as which company handles it my guess would be the same company who handles all of their returns, and they track it by using your ID. NOT by using your RewardZone account.

So Kindle Cards, Visa GCs, and flipping from BB back into BB have nothing to do with it.

To add too it these are ALL facts. Not speculation. Over the limit even once and your done. Just takes time.

Also online doesn't require your ID so you can still tradein in there. Just in store bans.
I don't think I ever hear either way, but Godly did you get banned in any of these last 2 waves? I haven't done a trade in a few weeks, so I'm curious about my account now.
Yup.

First one at my store to ever be banned. I was kind of expecting but the guys working there all freaked out. Oh well fun while it lasted. Payed for a lot or things I wouldn't have gotten without it.

While I do agree that they'll probably be out of the game trade business(like WalMart) within a year, I do NOT want them to go out of business completely. Besides the fact that there are some pretty decent employees at my closest two stores, they have been knocking it outta the park with these sales/clearances on games as of late.

Since Kmart/Sears are a wasteland for $10 and under games for me and Target n TRU clearance usually sucks balls around here, I'd like to continue to have someplace else to go for some decent deals sometimes.

If BB were to go under completely, the only 'electronics' store around here that'd be left would be HHGregg.:puke: They're as bad as frickin' WM with keeping shit at or above MSRP until it sells and I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention the word CLEARANCE in the same sentence as HHGregg.

Thing is, even though the one lady manager has been a bitch to me at times at the further BB store and cockblocked me on pennied guides
(and I can even understand her standing on the sale of the guides as they DO lose money from being reimbursed by the publishers for taking them off the shelves not selling them)
, I wouldn't even wish for her to lose her job. Besides which she's been downright cordial the last couple of times I've been in. Although I believe it took a complaint to BB.com to prompt that sort of change.
so basically everyone who has gotten banned HAS gone over the 3 limit, yes?
Now im paranoid. I don't think I ever went over 3 but I didn't keep good records. Guess I will find out when I go to trade tonight

Ok guys im sorry. I dont want to see Best Buy to go out of business :(

It's the Internet and you expect an truthful answer? Did shawshank redemption teach you nothin?!?

But yes most people have posted they went over the limit at some point. I believe from my horrible memory, that 2 people that got banned said they did NOT go over the limit.

Not every BB requires your DL#, fingerprint and your first born child to take trades. At my closest BB stores it's DL# and sign on the dotted line and that's it. Of course they still have your info in the system from prior trades, so they no longer have to enter in the info from the DL. But in the beginning I swear they used to do that every time I went to trade.:whistle2:#

I'm pretty sure this will vary by state, as it's going to depend on your local laws that usually govern pawn shops. At least that's my layman's understanding, IANAL and all that.

I'm looking to begin flipping as a hobby, but not egregiously. In a few months I'd like to buy a laptop, so I'm looking to make that purchase easier. What tips, tricks, and guidance can y'all provide me? How do you guys keep things organized, and how do you seek out good flips?

lol ur kinda late to the game

I'm not sure where best to post this so here goes:

If you bought on Best Buy's site on Black Friday and had some things backordered then cancelled - READ the cancellation email very closely.

I bought Harry Potter 7 Part 2 for 9.99 with free shipping on Black Friday. I had a couple backorder emails then today a cancellation email. In the email they describe me as "a valued customer" and give me a $10 code as an apology (the code expires Jan 9th).

I then check their site, see the movie listed there for $12.99 with in store pick up. I ordered the movie with their code, picked it up, and now my 9.99 black Friday movie is $2.99...

dont trade in more then 3 of a copy at a time..though even that seems to not matter since they could still ban you. As for flips just check this site. People will usually speak of cheap games. you can look up their trade in value off of Best Buy's Trade In Center page.

I never traded in more then 3 of a title at once, but im guessing its 3 all together, because ive traded in probably like 6+ BulletStorms and other titles over the last few months but never more then 3 at once.

Hah. Is there any point in even calling that asset protection number? I'll post my experience and thoughts later on when I have more time to type it up.

its a waste. i called and got through to a foreigner who kept telling me I violated their trade in policy. I kept asking how I violated it and he told me it didnt say and that I could contact corporate through some website. bunch of BS.

Sorry to those that say their state doesn't need ID. I know that state by state laws may or may not require the thumbprint, but was told by 2 managers that it was corporate policy for them to put on them by their 3rd party company.

Still sitting here wondering why I trusted anything a BBY employee told me...

Same thing I got

I haven't have the time to be working through my backlog so don't have any games to test trade. I keep a notebook of all my trades and never once went over the limit but I do bring around 15 or so games to trade. Reading all of these stories is very frightening....sounds like they are bringing the ban to customers who trade frequently.
