Which time period do you think produced the best music? I'd have to say either the 60's or the early 90's. I think that both were a little bit after the advent of a genre- 60's rock and 90's punk and a little bit before the genre went down the shitter.

What are your opinions?

If anyone says 00's I'll be very, very angry.

Early 90's. I would give anything to be the age I was then. Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots.. man.

60's and 70's

Sixties - Cream, CCR, Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Beatles, Who
Seventies - Led Zeppelin, Stones Again, Doors, Allman Brothers

best to worst

60's,70's,80's, 90's, 00's
its also in chronological order, fancy that

why? there's a lot of good stuff coming out, creativity and genre-busting is rampant. it's just that almost NONE of it is popular or even heard of.

I still listen to all kinds of music, spent most of my life listening to older music, but the stuff I'm most interested in nowadays is new...

so I'll be that guy-- 00's

If i were forced to decide at gunpoint:
00s, 90s, 70s, 60s, 80s

but of course, every decade has it's merits.

I would say The Who is 60s and 70s, while The Doors are more 60s. Also, where the fuck is Dylan? :shame:

Hmmm...this is a toughy.

90's, 60's, 70's (by sheer force of Led Zeppelin), 00's, 80's

90's and 60's could be interchanged at any moment. Outside of a small handful of groups, I hate the 80's. And there has been a lot of good music in the 00's (Trail of Dead, anything from Saddle Creek, Taking Back Sunday, Dredg, Jimmy Eat World, etc) to the point where I would just about put it over the 70's.

I'm not a big fan of 60s and 70s music. My favorites are 80s and 90s music. 00s is only half over so hard to tell what type of music will appear in the next 5 years.

There's tons of good stuff in 00...
Dream Theater
Pain Of Salvation
Porcupine Tree
Just to name a few....get off of the radio and you'll find the good stuff.

Zeppelin's the only reason the 70s placed on my list as well. And although the 80s as a whole were awful, there were just enough good to great bands near the end that raised it up just enough. A few important '89 releases really helped out.

I liked the who's early stuff, and The Doors Later stuff, because as fat as Morrison got, Robbie Krieger really got more involved for the better

I really dont like much of Bob Dylan, save for his greatest hits

But the indie stuff is such a small fraction of what is produced that it doesn't change the rank of the 00's. Almost everything in the 60's was good.
00s is only half over so hard to tell what type of music will appear in the next 5 years.
the past 5 years, thanks to the Internet, have been pretty explosive. hopefully the next 5 will be as good as the last 5.
But the indie stuff is such a small fraction of what is produced that it doesn't change the rank of the 00's. Almost everything in the 60's was good.
Just because music can be mass produced shouldn't diminish the contributions of the good stuff that is coming out. I think you really have to consider that this is a truly new era in terms of accessibility to music, and just because the radio plays the mass prduced stuff, doesn't mean that people aren't getting to the other stuff in large quantities. For example, living in West Michigan, normally a cultural black hole, I was surprised at the turn-out for both the Bright Eyes and The Good Life shows that I went to a while back. I thought it'd be a small, cozy crowd, but instead the place was packed pretty well.

I go with the 90's as my favorite. Due to the fact I was 19-29 in age for that decade. I would love to relive those grunge years, the parties and girls.........and the music was great. Single and young, guys enjoy the years from 20 until about 30.

I don't think so....I'd say there's more good indie, self-produced, unsigned, and regional groups than anything else right now. Popular music(pop, rap, metal) doesn't have half the variety or even close to the number of bands that fall under the "indie" moniker. It's freaking huge.

I like the last half of the 60s after LSD got everyone to be so creative...but going from the 1930s to about 1965, I really only care about the Jazz scene(besides ska in jamaica in the late 50s and 60's)

alright, I promise to not post in this thread again. commence normal discussion. sorry.

SIR! I call shenanigans on you. You have never been to a Bright Eyes concert. That being said, I really think the amount of good music available right now is amazing. It blows every other decade out of the water. So I will also be that guy and say I prefer the 00s. Then I'd go with the 90s, then 70s, then 60s. I like to pretend the 80s never happened.
now. with the internet it's easier than ever to find stuff you like, and you're not limited to whatever the music companies shove down your ears.

I'm reading the FAQ for this. It says you can't control when or how much it downloads, how much bandwidth it hogs, or the disk space it takes up. So what do you do when you want it to stop downloading songs?

I'm not sure how it happened but apparently '77-'87 is classic rock now, if you believe the radio. Personally, I don't.

the problem with the radio definition of "classic" rock is that its any music from 15+ years back. which is retarded, its the name of a genre of rock, much like classical music is a genre of music.

but who listens to the radio anyways
The best music in the whole world is any music that you're into between the ages of 15 and 18.
 (if you knew what i listened to then, youd be laughing too ^^) i dont know if that applies to everyone i listened to alot of stuff back then that i cant stand now, and its not even like im moving forward, im looking to older stuff from around the years i was born and finding that i like it a ton better than music from the past 15 years

Oh yeah, and 93-94 when Sinatra put out Duets I and Duets II.

I'd say the 1980-1995 has to be my favorite span of music, although every decade had it's great music kind of unfair to just pick one.

The Romantic era and 20th century.
As far as rock music, I guess I'm partial to the 90s (grunge...), and I mostly don't like the 80s, but they did produce Metallica...
Then I'd have to go with the 60s and 50s.

I'm a fan of the 40's and 50's, especially with the types like Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and Miles Davis. Anyway, this is the order for me:

50's, 40's, 80's, 70's, 60's, 90's, 00's. I really don't like much of anything produced recently.

The 70's

Amazing ALL-AROUND music...

Earth, Wind and Fire
Queen
Doobie Brothers
Jackson 5
Stevie Wonder
Santana
Hall and Oates
Al Green
Elton John

These are just a few of my favorites. IMO this is when creativty was at its best. This was just before commercialism really made its impact on music. I really like the jazz and big band eras too but the 70's just had so much good variety.

There is good stuff from every era, but the second half of the 80's is the pinnacle for me..

New Order
The Smiths
Sisters of Mercy
R.E.M. (the good years)
U2 (the good years)
Echo & the Bunnymen
Sigue Sigue Sputnik
Public Enemy
The Cure (the good years)
Jesus & Mary Chain
The Mission
Front 242
Beastie Boys
Tears for Fears
Gene Loves Jezebel
Siouxsie & the Banshees
XTC
Cocteau Twins
Jane's Addiction
Pixies
Ministry
Public Image Ltd
Skinny Puppy
Pop Will Eat Itself

ah, good times :)

Oh yes, except Guile left out Marvin Gaye, the Brothers Johnson, and the Temptations. And Mega missed Talk Talk, Psychedelic Furs, Blondie, INXS, Wang Chung and the Stranglers.

Crap! How could I have missed INXS?? They were one of my favorites, and I've been watching that 'find-a-new-lead-singer' show they have going on.

Yeah, I left out some good ones.

The O'Jays
Sly and the Family Stone
Carole King
Kool and the Gang
Minnie Riperton
Linda Rondstat
Ohio Players

I'll let ya off the hook- This time. ;) My fave is undeniably 'Falling Down the Moutain'- I like the acoustic sound that accompanies the electric. It's also one of the slower songs, which I like.

Holy Shit- I just forgot I left out OMD and Oingo Boingo. My favourite single songs are Big Country's 'In A Big Country', Modern English's 'I Melt With You', After the Fires and Falco's 'Der Kommissar', Yaz's 'Don't Go', and Human League's 'Fascination'.

1996 - 1999

The end of the world was coming, people were angry, pissed off and wanted nothing in life. The information age hit, uniting the world....while at the same time making us grow antisocial. Music from that time period was elite technology mixed with drug use.

People were using computers to expand their horizons and using drugs to expand their minds. It was a Gibson Society.

Portishead, Black Grape, Underworld, The Prodigy, and many others.

Drugs + Technology = Electronic born Unity.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

But I guess people just thought, you couldnt be cool if you werent holding a guitar. psssht.

70s was a great era for music in my opinion, followed by early 90's, then the 80's...in my opinion , around the late 90's is when most originality in music came to a screeching halt :whistle2:\
