best final fantasy to begin with on DS?

Well there's technically only one FF on DS, not counting Revenant Wing, and that's III. If you want to play the GBA ones the only ones I've played are IV and VI. Either are good for beginners but I do like VI better.

Skip IV Advance for now, as the 3D DS remake will be coming out in mid-year, I think.

III DS is an okay remake of the NES version, while I'm partial to V and VI advance.

Dawn of Souls is also cheap as hell and has two FF games, FWIW.

i'll sell you my Final Fantasy III. it's pretty damn long. if you wanna feel frustrated for awhile and then very accomplished i'd hit up FFIII

no, theres III and !V. and then theres the spin-off's. tactis 2: sealed grimoire, revenant wings, Cyrstal chronicles: ring of fate, hell, you might even include chocobo tales.

although, I'm not sure which are out here and which in japan. and I'm not importing.

edit: actually, I could do with a dragon quest or similiar RPG. recommendations?

 Yeah, that's pretty much FFIII.

I'd recommend FFVI because it's the best FF game... ever.
IV isnt out yet for the DS
it is in japan...so is rings of fate i think and tactics a2
id like to see 7 on it if it were possible. hell they put resident evil on the thing why not ff7.
Not likely:
FF7 = 3 CDROMs = 3 * ~650 MB = 1.90 GB of game data ... round it to 2 GB, which is 16 gigabit (Gb).

The DS currently uses 2 Gb cards. That means they'd have to do a multi-card game, which won't happen due to cost and impossiblity of transfering data when you switch from card 1 to 2 etc. Or they'd have to reduce the code, video, graphics, and music data to one eighth the original size. Sorry, not going to happen.

Also, there's some talk of the fact that larger cards are slightly slower (according to a developer (via wikipedia via IGN dev. blogs I guess...whatever).

Sorry to be a debbie-downer. :(

Addressing the OP now: I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. Check out this article on 1up.com: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3164719

It tells about each game and each release. Check out page three for GBA and DS games.

Without any more input for the OP, I would suggest FFIII. It plays like the NES era games, but looks good and is a lot of fun. It's also had some price drops lately, so perhaps you can score it on the cheap.

If you take out the all cutscreen it is not that big. For example CD 3 only has the final dugeon and the ending.

i was going to say this same thing, i wont go that far, planescape torment is a better RPG(for me at least) and resident evil 4 was the most fun video game i ever played, and hell i could make a pitch for zelda OOT or castlevania 1 as the greatest ever.

i still loved ff6

FF6 is my favorite too, but if you play that first there is a good chance you wont enjoy the other FF game as much
If you take out the all cutscreen it is not that big. For example CD 3 only has the final dugeon and the ending.
This is true. Anyone who's ever installed the PC version knows that all of FFVII's non-FMV data can fit on one CD.

Also, video compression technology has improved a great deal since FFVII, so even the FMVs might not be problematic, space-wise.

Anyway, recs. Don't really have any, but FFV is one of my personal favorites so... FFV Advance, maybe? I've never played this particular port, so I don't know how well it holds up.

Outside of the main series, I got a lot of mileage out of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. FFTA2 should be coming out later this year, though.

this FFVII-on-DS thing has been discussed to death, and it is certainly possible between the fact that so much information was duplicated on the 3 cds, video compression is light years ahead of 1996, etc etc.
