Best Gaming Headphones w/ mic?

I've been using a $20 Logitech behind-the-head headset for a while. It's serviceable, but really uncomfortable during long stretches and the sound quality isn't too great.

So, I did a little research and decided on these, which UPS tells me are arriving today:

I got the version with the USB soundcard, since I don't have a dedicated one in my PC. I'll post back with some impressions after I've had some time to try them out.

These were my second choice because of the built in 5.1, but it sounds like they practically self-destruct after a few months.

I second the motion. I have these in black, they are comfy for playing/listening for hours and are well ventilated so your ears don't get hot.
Comes with a detachable mic which is useful and does the trick.
I picked up a pair for like 62 from a repuatable powerseller on ebay.
 
Well, that's what I get for browsing with images off... I come back to read replies and JMEPO had already posted the headset in my first link. I'm trying them out now and I like them so far, although with the volume dial at more than 50% I hear faint clicking on the Mac, as if it wasn't grounded or something, whenever I do something like scroll a window. It doesn't happen on the PC, so it's very weird and I'm looking into it.

Installing the USB sound card now...
 
oh, my only gripe with the headphones is that there is no clip for the volume dial attachment, so its a long hanging cord, no issue though.

Comfy, full ear cover, has clip on volume control. Nice. They also go on sale all the time for around 30$. Not bad.

I've used those too. But my experience is a little different. They just don't take wear-and-tear. The headset was broken after a year. I tried to repair it put I would have had to replace many wires.

I paid $15 for the black ver of those AR. It was worth it. It does get uncomfy after awhile though and I kind of wish it had a mic on it rather than a seperate wire one you have to clip on. But no biggie.
 
I've had a chance to use the white Icemats for a few sessions now (listening to music and playing Battlefield 2142), and I strongly recommend them. The sound quality is superb, even compared to my old Sony headphones which were also good. At first my ears would start to hurt after about half an hour of use, but I discovered that I needed to position the cups differently than how I was used to, and now they stay comfortable even after wearing them for several hours straight. I didn't get to test the microphone with actual VOIP use, but it seemed to get a better response in the setup test, and I actually like the fact that it's separated from the headset because of the way my desk is laid out.

One caution: Definitely don't waste your money on the USB soundcard version. I read reviews saying it was horrible but also a few that said it was decent if you don't have a dedicated sound card already, so I figured why not. It ended up that I couldn't stand using it for more than one minute because of the horrendous popping and crackling. The sound card is a complete joke.
 
can anyone vouch for any of these headphones if you wear glasses?

ive owned several head phones but cant wear them for long because of my glasses

With glasses like these you won't have to worry about headsets getting in the way. The process may be painful though.
 
I think I'm going to go with the SENNHEISER PC166 or Tritton True 5.1 Digital. I have a big head which takes off any behind the head designed headphones. This is also a problem with over the head phones that don't have manual sizing so no imate or stealsound for me. The build itself looks weak for imate also.

Another thing is I needed one that can do multiple speakers or directional sound so I would know if someone was behind be on the right, behind me on the left, just to the left, or in whatever other direction. Some of the phones that state if they can do that or not and it wasn't clear in the reviews either so I scratch those from my list.

I actually got these free (via Live Search Club) and they're about average or so .. good quality but the wear & tear on the headset is bad, cord starting to tangle and rip etc. The behind-the-head Logitech ones are better, IMO, if you don't mind a headset behind the head.
 
i hope to get these soon, and if my experience with the razer copperhead (10/10) is any indication of my experience with other razer products, it will be an excellent buy

Had to bring this thread up rather then making a new one for the same thing. I finally need a headset so I can play games and watch movies without people bitching that sound is too loud, even when its not -_-. Anyway, which do you guys recommend from experience out of the ones I've listed? Rather get the "best" one I can for around this price range rather then wasting money on other headsets. Having a mic isn't necessary but I guess its a plus since I can use it for some games.

if you like razer i highly recommend the barracudas, 4 individual volume controls and 1 master volume control, plus surround sound
 
I've only tried the Icemats out of those three so I can't really compare, but I can offer this: Although I'm a big fan of the headset, other people can definitely hear what I'm listening to. So if you're looking for silent headphones, rule that one out.

Can't really say I like one over the other, each seem to have its benefits. The ratings of the barracudas are low, but thats mostly ratings from noobs :roll:

I don't mind other people being able to hear what I'm hearing, just as long as its not to loud and bother the other people, in turn making them bother me. I just want the nicest sounding for the money.

I would lean towards the Sennheiser models as its a highly recommended brand, just not sure which model to get, as many say their "PC" line sucks. Likewise, the surround sound in the ones I linked are tempting. I'm confused with some of the Sennheiser ones, they don't seem to have a "surround sound" setup (unless I looked wrong), yet some users say things "i heard the footsteps from my enemy behind me" when they play. Not sure if their sound quality is that great, or if it has some surround engine aswell.

If these headsets were 20, guess no problem choosing one. But at 100~ or so, I want my money's worth.

In that case I'd definitely recommend the Icemats, but like I said, I haven't tried the others for comparison. (They're definitely better than my old $30 Sonys, though, and I really liked those.)

I was trying to decide between the Icemats and a couple of surround sound headsets, and eventually I decided to pass on those because I don't have a soundcard that does surround. There's a version of the Icemats that comes with a USB soundcard that does virtual surround sound, and while I definitely heard sounds coming from all around, the quality was unbelievably bad. So definitely avoid that bundle.
 
I'm going to connect them to my X-Fi fatal1ty card, running some Logitech Z-5300e 5.1 speakers, so not sure having the usb sound cards would be beneficial to me, unless the unit requires it.

Seems the Razer might need some messing with my settings, don't really feel like switching from 5.1 to 4.1 if the user review on newegg holds any ground.

I might just end up going with the Icemats to save some cash if they sound well. I'll just wait a bit for more opinions and more research before finalizing a purchase. If only I wasn't so undecisive with these things....
 
I have an Altec Lansing set. Very clean, crisp sound with great low pass response, and a very clear microphone. The best mics are the logitech USB headset mics though.
