I'm looking to upgrade my 80gb harddrive in my ps3 to be able to store more files. What would be a good way to transfer files from my computer over to PS3? I don't wanna stream it, since I want the PS3 to be processing the media file, not my computer. Is the best way just an external drive?

Also, what kind of hard drive should I be buying to put inside the PS3?

He's not asking how to upgrade the hard drive, he's asking what is the best way to transfer files from his pc to his ps3.

For just a few files, I use a 16gb flash memory stick, but if you are going to be transferring large amounts of files, then the external hard drive is the way to go. Also, I tried transferring an almost 4gb file over PS3 Media Server and that didn't work too bad. It took about 15 minutes, which was worth it to me since I didn't have to move anything around or connect anything else.

I wish the PS3 had a esata port, then we would see some major transfer speeds!

Out of curiosity, what size hard drive are you upgrading to? If you find a good deal on one, would you post the link? I've been thinking about upgrading as well. It's really nice to be able to have every episode of Seinfeld on my PS3 and not have to access that huge dvd case each time I want to watch a classic episode of that wonderful show :)

i second the thumb drive option.
it works well i often transfer divx movies to the ps3 from the pc.
no problems yet.
it can even play them off the thumb drive if you wish.

The PS3 is Fat32 however, so keep that in mind if you do a portable hard drive. I have 100 Gb partition on my 1TB external for this resaon.

I just dropped a 400 Gb drive in my pS3 and after you get raped by their file system taking up a large portion (50+ GB) you have about 317 GB left of space...

Also if you didnt know the Fat32 can only hold what 2 or 4gb max file size... which works for most things, but if its a large single file it wont work, I dont believe.

I just access the files through my network, and copy them to the PS3 that way. Then play it off my PS3 HDD.

Seriously though - Microsoft just kicked all the modded 360's off of Live. Who knows - Sony may follow suit. If you care about access to the PSN you may want to think twice about modding your PS3. Just my 2 cents...

camoor: I don't think anyone is talking about modding here. Except maybe replacing the HDD in the PS3, which is allowed by Sony.

Big Wang: If your PC is set up as a media server (no additional software needed) and you allow the PS3 to access your media, it will show up on the XMB. From there, you can find the file, hit triangle, and select copy. Viola!

Exactly, Sony is fine with upgrading the PS3 hard drive. They even provide instructions on the process in the manual.

I've been using a flash drive for transferring data to and from the PS3. That or an external hard drive would work fine. If you wait until black friday, I'm sure you can find a good deal on something.

Thats what I do. Much easier, plus you can tell what kinds of video files you can play before you copy anything. I just stream it and it doesnt seem to slow my PC or anything, but probably takes some bandwitdth.

Must be some sort of issue on my end, cause I find TVersity to be unreliable at best. Half the time it won't connect, and the other half it cuts out in the middle of playback. Most of the time I just direct transfer with a thumb drive and play off the hdd.

I had some issues in the past and found it was a driver issue with my router. Maybe try reconfiguring the router.
