Ahhh, I see. Such a pity. Just imagine Eric Bischoff showing up with Flair, Goldberg, Hogan, Hall, Nash, Scott Steiner, DDP, Rey Mysterio, Buff Bagwell, and Booker. And they'd have these epic wars against Vince's army of Austin, Rock, Undertaker, Triple H, Guerrero, Benoit, Angle, and others. You could have WCW gain the upper hand in a LONG feud, then one year into it would be right around when HBK starts wrestling again... oh man I mark out just imagining that!!! HBK's return would factor into that storyline and he could get Hall and Nash to join WWE and finally shift the balance of power back to WWE.
Meanwhile you could have had the ECW guys be this small renegade crew who does these random hit and run strikes against whoever they feel like.
Good lord that would have been awesome!
It definitely had the potential to be the biggest storyline in wrestling history, but this is Vince we're talking about. I mean, did anyone seriously expect greatness from the Invasion angle?
I remember it clearly. The attitude era, which basically made a wrestling fan, was on its downward spiral... and then out of nowhere, Shane appeared on Nitro. I must admit, I marked out pretty hard. I don't remember a more exciting time to be a fan... I mean, after watching the two companies duke it out for not days or months, but years, one had bought the other. But... as the night progressed, I began to realize the path of what was to come. It wasn't about me and my friends, it wasn't about wrestling, it wasn't about the fans, it was about money, greed, and gloat. It was about being a sore winner and securing Vince's invisible throne. Vince had crushed WCW from a business standpoint, and it was time for him to crush basically all of WCW talent before deciding who he should rebuild on his own turf... sad...
Then the Invasion angle occured, and I stopped watching for a few years out of utter disappointment.. until TNA came around. AJ Styles got me into wrestling again (shame he's still Christian's lackey, he needs to be main eventing sooner than later). So... I say. Even if you don't like TNA, you should support it just as a wrestling fan... because it's WWE's only televised competition (ROH is great too, although they only recently got a PPV slot) and like the mid to late 90's showed us, competition is a good thing
