Godfather is worht s try for $6, if for no other reason than morbid curiosity as to how EA butchered the movie.
Or to see how they butchered the keyboard/mouse control scheme on the PC, which, come to think of it, is not worth $6.00... Sure, it may be compatible with various gamepads, but come on - this is true PC gaming we're talking about, not console emulation on a PC...

EA hyped The Godfather game tremendously (almost as much pre-release coverage that Bioshock is receiving at present), and it had real-deal potential... but in my opinion (and I even paid MSRP for this upon release) the final game was a boring, sloppy washed-out mix of lager piss and baby vomit. Just my opinion, mind you. :)

I ignore EA's hype machine. They let me down with Rogue Agent. Fun, yes? Good, not really. So Godfather was mostly a pleasant surprise for me. Take the shooting action from 007:EoN, strip away that game's excellent levels and instead give us pretty good levels and viscerally enjoyable fisticuffs and extortion.

Still, if the control scheme is that broken (And, really, Godfather's fighting scheme was about mangling the dual analog controller in your hands, not a keyboard/mouse abstraction), then I retract anything good I said about Godfather PC.
Sure, it may be compatible with various gamepads, but come on - this is true PC gaming we're talking about, not console emulation on a PC...

I disagree with the notion that good PC gaming can only use keyboard and mouse. I've used my Logitech Dual Action for nearly every PC game I play. Even if the game doesnt support it, the Profiler software emulates keyboard input as a background program. I use the controller in the left hand/mouse right hand setup, and it makes action oriented stuff like FPSs a lot more fun. Right now I'm playing Deus Ex Invisible War with the Dual Action. Even though it was mentioned nowhere on the box or in the manual, the game supports my pad. FUll analog movement + mouse precision aiming = SWEET.

I agree. I use the Cordless Rumblepad.

In other news, I found the Jaws game at BL for $6.
I disagree with the notion that good PC gaming can only use keyboard and mouse...
Good PC gaming can absolutely be had with a gamepad; I wasn't suggesting that all games be a keyboard/mouse affair.

But a typical 3rd-person game like The Godfather should have implemented a control scheme that works efficiently with the keyboard/mouse. It''s been done successfully so many times before, on so many games. Not to mention on games that were cross-platform releases.

I think the ill sentiment about The Godfather at the forums (and we've all heard this argument before), is that the core game was console-focused (from a design standpoint), and the PC version did not receive proper attention. (You mentioned DE:IW - think about the initial release with the huge screen fonts that catered to console players.)

Having said all this, I will still disagree (quite stubbornly!) that a gamepad provides the same precision for FPS's as a keyboard and mouse... I just don't believe it. :)

Well, you cannot forget that whatever they use to approximate the hand-to-hand of Godfather on the PC is going to be a poor substitute for the analog stick-punching/swinging/slamming and L3+R3 choking. Neither wild mouse flailing/gestures nor buttons will give the same visceral player motion to character action mapping, and since half the fun of Godfather was tossing shopkeepers around their own stores or tossing an enemy mobster through a window or into a fireplace, or simply beating the tar out of an enemy mobster... it is hard to imagine Godfather translating well to the PC.

Plus, Godfather used the 007:EoN lock-aim-shoot mechanic with a mini-crosshair being used to refine your aim. This was built from the ground up for consoles, and would be hard to imagine being used appropriately in a PC setting.

EDIT: For fairness, I'm not even MENTIONING what the Wiimote added to Godfather Blackhand Edition.

Not all PC games require a PC/mouse. Platformers, racing, and third person action games usually play better with a gamepad.

But when it comes to FPS's, nothing can beat the keyboard/mouse, unless the devs add easy aim or some other such bullshit. RTS and sim games are unplayable for me unless I'm using keyboard/mouse.

Jaws Unleashed was released for the PC? I had no idea.

Does anyone know if it's any good? If it's not complete crap, I could probably get some enjoyment out of being a killer shark. :)

I picked up The G today for $6. I've just installed it, and have searched EA's pretty but horribly laid-out site for patches. I cant find any concrete information. I hate to start a game and find out I need a patch that will destroy my save file. Any thoughts?

Also I noticed X3 Reunion and City Of Villians (deluxe set with the Heroclix figure) at Big Lots for $6. Word of warning: watch out for re-sealed City of Villians boxes. One of the two on the shelf had an identical clear seal placed over the original which had been cut. It's probable some of this stuff are store returns that have been tampered with...

Average score on Metacritic is 55%. :hot: Most of the reliable folks like Gamespot and Game Informer crushed it. IMO, life is too short for crappy games. Just play the good stuff.

Amazon user reviews say it's good! Though, I have not yet installed myself. :)
godfather is easily worth 6 dollars
I thought I'd mention that Im around 6 hours into Godfather on the PC and it's a lot better than I thought. It took a while to remap all the controls to my gamepad(I dumped the mouse all together), but I'm enjoying the variety of activities the game presents. Plus the sounds and atmoshpere are perfect. Anybody considering it should go ahead and grab it for $6.

Thanks for the heads up OP. I was able to find a Big Lots a few towns over that had the Half Life Anthology. I installed them all (I had bought the original half life at some circuit city sale a few years back for $5 but filed it somewhere without installing it).

The graphics are a bit dated but the game scares the heck outta me. The story is so engaging that its like being in a sci fi horror flick. I love the fps games, but now I think I know why I prefer the WWII or straight battle type games - when the enemy is human its just not as scary. Though I have played Halo and except for the Flood, the enemies were not so bad. Eh, I guess I'm a bit of a wuss.

At any rate, thanks for the heads up. I will have to play half life, opposing force and blue shift - and keep a bright light by the PC - :)
FWers are reporting a 20% off coupon valid on 7/22 only.
Pretty sweet little collection for around $5 a piece, aint it? :D

Now if we can convince BL to carry liquidated console games....oooooooh...gotta change my pants again....
I don't think the problems with starforce have anything to do with 'illegal stuff' on one's machine.

Starforce is intrusive malware that has a history of ruining people's PC's and optical drives.

And ditogi is correct: Starforce has nothing to do with any illegal stuff you may or may not have on your machine.

Some people don't have any problems with it; some do. I'm not willing to compromise my PC over a $6 game I snagged at Big Lots.
I don't think the problems with starforce have anything to do with 'illegal stuff' on one's machine.
It doesn't. Starforce is notorious, and rightfully so, because it messes with driver-level architecture in a way that can cause damage to a machine it is installed on.

Like any copy protection, it has been soundly defeated by independent hacking groups. The thing is, most games that still use Starforce are of such low quality that they're not even worth cracking. Starforce has become immensely unpopular with game publishers due to customer backlash and decreased revenue due to returns, tech support calls, and poor review scores caused by the use of Starforce. (Reviewers have been known to dock a game as much as 20% for using Starforce.)

Hit up my Big Lots over the weekend. They did indeed have some of the newer games, but not the one I was interested in (that being the Half Life Anthology). :p Oh well...at least my store has the rack with the games and DVDs right up front so I didn't have to wade through the stinking masses of people to check it out.

Well, I did notice some of the IDE DVD ROM behavior like burning an audio cd and then not being able to play it back with Windows Media Player. The CD acts like it's bad, but then Nero Premium plays it just fine.

Not sure why that does that, but ah well... I'll deal with the Force for now.

And to think, Starforce got Windows Certification for Vista.

Man oh man, where will you ever find the time to get through all of those games??? I've got like 4 or 5 games in my backlog, and with Bioshock just around the corner, I won't ever get to them...

You really scored big time, Terry...

It will take a lot of time indeed!

I'm mostly using the PC as a music computer too, so there's even less time right there.

But for those games, it's worth every penny.

I still long for some of my Amiga classics, and those I have on 5 DVD's.

Good thing an emulator came out.

First time I ever went to Big Lots, and the place is messy, disorganized, etc.
Anywho, the good stuff I found was PoP: The Two Thrones and City of Villans.
Not much else though.
i snagged darwinia and psychonauts...thing is i doubt ill ever play em!
You should play 'em.
They're both quite good.

Found some new games at the Big Lots in Athens Ga last night. Non of these games are major steals (except for Psychonauts which is awesome at any price) but most of the games seemed to be good deals for the money. Best all all, these new games were all priced at $4.00!!

Here is what I found:

Pyschonauts (I think this was $6.00 before)
Kohan 2:Kings of War - really good RTS
Spongebob Nighty Nightmare
Paraworld - Decent RTS, very good units but average gameplay
Spongebob Nighty Nightmare
Hello Kitty Bubblegum Girlfriends (my daughter loves it)
True Crime : New York
Activision Remixed - collection Activision games from the original Atari 2600
Bad Day LA - I really wanted to pick this up just to see if it was as bad as the reviews but I ended up passing.

Also, I am not sure if these have been mentioned but there were a few other new $6.00 titles:

Comandos Strike Force
Project Snowblind

There were a handful of other new titles that were new but I did recognize the names so I skipped over them.

Possible restock, YMMV I guess. I dropped by Big Lots today, and I found a copy of Sin that wasnt there before. They seemed to have gotten more games and dvds overall, since they had an additional rack of items instead of the usual rack of one.

Picked up Corvette for $6. Saw plenty of copies of NBA Live 06 for $4 in Milpitas.

BTW, has anyone REALLY seen "Flatout 2" at BL? I've seen MANY MANY MANY copies of "Flatout 1", but not the sequel.

Yep.

Oasis, Pirate Poppers, and a few other casual games for $6?

Oasis is definitely worth it. I got PP because Zuma + Pirate Music = win. Haven't installed it yet though.
Are things quiet on the BL front? It's been quiet for me!
Yes, quiet. I'm planning to update the master list soon, but it takes considerable time to visit 3 or 4 local big lots, write down all new games and prices, then update the OP. :( I was at one BL about a week ago and saw at least 20 new titles...

I get many of my pc games from there.

Here's what I got so far.

Rainbow Six Lockdown - 6
Paraworld - 4
Kohan II - 4
Lords III - 4

That's about it. I am in love with R6 but it has Starforce on it. It hasnt been a problem yet, but I will let you know if it is.

Paraworld is good if you don't take it seriously because it will disappoint you if you do.

I will check today if I see any new titles out.

I'm happy to finally get Darwinia! What a cool game, especially for $4 :)

Didn't see if anyone else mentioned it but, don't bother with Auto Assault, it's a nearly dead mmorpg that is going offline sometime soon.
Are things quiet on the BL front? It's been quiet for me!
As of last Friday, I havent seen any of the new assortment here in Richmond. Maybe this week. I finished Godfather, so I need a new waste of time. :D

Yeah, must be restocks. I had to get True Crime NY, Bad Day LA & the Atari 2600 Activision classics, all for $4 each. Never got my emu on, now I can!
