Mount and Blade is pretty good, but internet feedback overrates it considerably. It has a really fun melee combat mechanic but big battles tend to be completely mindless, canned animation spamfests and the overworld balance, including quests, money raising, tactical AI, the economy... everything else is pathetic.

As it stands though, it is an amazingly fun game for the first 10 or so hours of gameplay where you don't see its flaws. Grab the demo, it is the whole game only level capped at level 7.
Ahhh...the classic "overrated underrated" game. Thanks for the advice. I still may try it for $6.

I still have yet to try Loki CE, but I think the one guy who just really wanted it because he collects steelbox games got us ALL searching for it. :p

Richard, like I said, try the demo. For $6, M&B is still a pretty good game that can be really fun if you get into the good parts. I am one of the biggest balloon deflators when it comes to M&B but I would still say it is worth a purchase at $6. There are even several mods that add in some decent ideas, but none of them actually fill in the flaws of M&B, but they're still fun in their own way. Of course, the M&B developers and community seem to have given up on the idea of patching and expanding their game and just tell you when you bring up a change request "Make a mod! It's so easy!"

On a related note, I came home with EU3 Complete, Chessmaster Collector's Edition, and Murder at the Abbey. On checking reviews and sober recollection, I may just take them back.

Also, a Half Price Books just opened in my area, and they were heavy on Swat 4 Gold Editions (HELL TO THE POWER OF YEAH), EU3:Romes, HoMM3 Completes, Gothic Complete Collections, and some more good stuff.

Finally, I have tested one of the 1 Month Live codes from the PC games at Big Lots and I can say with 100% certainty that they function exactly the same as a prepaid 1 month live card. So buy without fear.

I have NO idea what you are talking about :)

I am kinda miffed that my closest Big Lots has not ONE anime DVD. Eugh.

Anyway, returned my purchases and saw something I missed yesterday, one lone copy of Jack Keane. Awesome. Snagged that sucker so fast it'd make your head spin.

Also, grabbed an RPG pack of Gothic 3 and Dungeon Lords, but I may just take that one back. Looking for opinions on that. Reviews are pretty bad, but Gothic seems like one of those games that might be bad but still enjoyable. Any thoughts on the matter?

Also saw Dark Messiah for $6. DM can often be found for $5 if you shop smart, but $6 is still an excellent price. If you're one of the like six people who doesn't have Dark Messiah, you have no excuse.

Hell, pick it up as a gift. The game can be installed without Steam if you don't care about the MP. The CD-key can be registered IN Steam, so you can theoretically give the key to someone else, they have an SP and MP copy of the game, and you just keep the disc for your SP copy without Steam activation.

Went to BL yesterday and confirmed: there hasn't been squat added there in what must be 6 months. All I see now are all these DVDs restocks.

can't find mount and blade here.

Found evidence: the ritual. didn't buy it. found floor cleaner. Bought it.

Hmm, I'll have to drive over and see if I can score Tron 2.0. Tron anything is win.
Gothic 3 was very buggy. That's why it has bad reviews. Community patches largely fixed everything, though. I would return the 2-Pack and get the Gothic 3 Collector's Edition. It comes with the expansion and Dungeon Lords is total crap. Plus the CE comes in a steel slipcover (m0mgz!!) and a bunch of useless stuff.

Most people compare the Gothic series to the Elder Scrolls series. Gothic 2 and Morrowind were both very good last generation, you will find people who prefer both in almost equal numbers. Minus the bugs in Gothic 3, it is very comparable to Oblivion, except that Oblivion has been aimed at console gamers, while Gothic 3 will appeal to the PC gamer more. Oblivion is obviously much more popular (mainly because of how poor Gothic 3's original launch went and Oblivion console sales) as a whole, but out of the PC-oriented gamers with experience with the Gothic and Elder Scrolls series, you will find many who prefer Gothic 3 to Oblivion. So I'd give it a shot, but get the patches.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_3#Community_patches
Downloading the most recent patch (1.7 + 1.71 hotfix = 1.72) via the torrent; http://www.gameupdates.org/details.php?file=Gothic_3_Community_Patch_v1.72_Int_Full.exe

Getting some really good speeds, so i'll probably seed for a while.
I've often seen Psychonauts at Big Lots for $6. TOTALLY worth it!
Really? I've been fruitlessly searching for a copy of Psychonauts!

If you'd be willing to snag me a copy and ship it out to me for a small finder's fee, please PM me!

Get it used on Amazon for like $5.

M&B's combat was a blast for the first 15 or so hours I've sunk into it (Like I said. Buy the game. For $6, you will have plenty of fun with it.) but now it just seems like everything is full of canned animations. My character steadfastly refuses to be able to hit anyone with a sword while he/she is riding a horse, always swinging over them.

I don't see the point in drawing a dichotomy between PC and console gamers when it comes to games. Oblivion was a blast* on both PC and consoles, and the massive modding community for Oblivion is a sign of that.

*Term used loosely, naturally. Oblivion is not a game I can unequivocally recommend.

I just wanted to point out that the "Turning Point" game is actually a RTS game "War Front: Turning Point", and not the awful Turning Point Fall of Liberty. War Front may actually be decent judging by Amazon reviewers.

I'd snag War Front: Turning Point for $4 is I didn't already have it. It's a fun alternate-history WWII game.

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty is at Big Lots, however. I just grabbed one for $4.

Yeah, I've seen both games at Big Lots and TP: Fall of Liberty is pretty common near me.

The one I want is War Front, but the only copy I've seen was ripped open and the disc missing. I guess you know the economy is bad when people are swiping $6 PC games.

LOL, the Big Lots I go to has the same problem. A few of the better games are just empty boxes sitting on the shelf. I move them away from the rest whenever I'm there. But they always end up back on the games shelf the next time I'm there. I wonder if it's employee theft?
Still nothing new at my Big Lots. Looks like its time to throw in the towel?
I wouldn't ever say that. Patience is key, but I guess it also depends on how convenient it is to drive to Big Lots. Mine is near my favorite Target, so every other week or so I'll stop and check the racks.

I don't go in with high hopes because new stock seems to only come about once a month. Plus it doesn't always match up with what others report. (For example, people were talking about picking up Loki a month before it arrived here.)

Of course, even with all that, I've been to Big Lots farther away that are absolute lemons and seem to only have stock from last year.

I've always been very patient, but we're talking about 6 months here with nothing new. I never saw one item that PCGirl mentioned in her list. My BL has run dry! ;)

Talk to a manager. Sometimes they stop ordering when they don't sell (of course they don't sell when they don't order). There are a few locations here in Richmond that just refuse to restock.

If there's ever anything you need and cant find, post ahead of time here and I can look for what you want for cost + shipping.

Hey, Turning Point: Fall of Liberty is a decent game...buggy, yes, but still decent and a great story if you look at the overall idea.

Second what RL said. The managers are fairly forthcoming with info regarding their tech shipments at my stores. My local store of average quality (No anime. Decent selection of games.) tells me that they get shipments every Friday so I can somewhat reliably check in the Friday of or the Friday after PC Girl reports.

If that offer is open to all CAGs, I've been looking for a copy of Psychonauts for some time now... :D

Thanks!

I just wish that the employees could get the shelves situated.

I mean most of the PC software in my Big Lots in on this big square unit in the middle of the store. DVDs are mixed in there as well. New games are put on all 4 sides. Just jammed them in there where they would fit. Sometimes they just put them in sideways so you can't tell what the heck it is unless you pull out the whole pile so you can see the labels.

There is no rhyme or reason to it. It bugs the hell out of me.

One time when they got a new shipment of Anime DVDs I organized them all on one shelf by genre and name (so sue me I have mild OCD). Two days later everything was in disarray again.

I dunno if it's the customers or if it's just lazy employees.

Are all Big Lots like this?

InfiniteAmmo, Psychonauts is more or less extinct now.

Dreamcastguy, yeah, they're all terrible. I'm sure it is a mixture of the budget quality of the store and the budget clientele that frequents it.

I just wish mine would get a smidge more anime rather than just one or two discs every so often.

Yes... Yes they are all like that. Hell, the square unit thing actually moves around my store from week to week. I don't know why! It just does!
DVDs are mixed in there as well. New games are put on all 4 sides. [...] Are all Big Lots like this?
My stores don't store things sideways like that, but the problem of games in the DVDs (whether by employees or shoppers) is so frustrating. In the past you could just skim the top of the DVD areas looking for bigger boxes. Thanks to the lame DVD-style cases showing up more you have to search everything just to snag some Roogoo.

I do re-organize (but no alphabetizing,lol. You're dedicated)
I just wish that the employees could get the shelves situated....Are all Big Lots like this?
Yes, but if you view it as an easter egg hunt type event, it's actually enjoyable.

"And the anime's connected to the...Jon Cryer film collection, and the Jon Cryer film collection's connected to the...weird straight-to-DVD softcore porn/horror movie, and the weird straight-to-DVD softcore porn/horror movie's connected to...the expired bottle of hot sauce, and the expired bottle of hot sauce is connected to...THE ROCKIN PC GAME I"VE BEEN LOOKING FOR!!!"

Check Amazon, you can probably get it cheap used from 3rd party sellers.
I'm sure it is a mixture of the budget quality of the store and the budget clientele that frequents it.
Hey, I take offense to that! ;)

Not surprisingly, the only Big Lots that I found that is organized also is the only one that's gotten fresh games since April. PC games are pretty much an afterthought elsewhere.

Just a heads up, I saw Season 4 of Nip/Tuck on Blu-ray at my local Big Lots. Didn't see any other titles but my store had about 10 copies.

Hey, I'll have you know that Big Lots has so awesome hot sauce. Seriously, you can't go wrong with seom Nando's Chickenland sauce. Well... you might. That sauce hates my innards.

Wow, I haven't seen any complete season DVD/BR in Richmond. Lots of single movies, though. Out of curiosity, how much are they? I did manage to grab Young Frankenstein SE for $3. :D

Tim Schafer says pirate the game and buy a sweat shirt from the Double Fine store.

No really, he actually said that.

I don't blame him. Double Fine probably has a far greater margin on the sweatshirts than it does on sales of Psychonauts by now.

Picked up Dark Messiah Might and Magic the other day, and it was well worth it. This game got a lot of bad rep because it wasn't like Oblivion. Despite having a linear level progression, though, the combat in this game blows Oblivion right out of the water.

Hyperlancer, I love DM to the point where I've probably done about 4 or 5 full runs of it in the past two years. I think why it didn't take off is because it wasn't... sexy enough. The combat is a blast. Kicking NEVER gets old, but so much of it is just... not up to A-list quality. The plot and storytelling are terrible, the art design is a little too drab, the pacing is a bit uneven though I welcome the variety, and the balance is just not there at all.

Still, best first person swordfighting out there, bar none. I'm surprised there still exist CAGs who don't have the game yet, considering how often it is on sale.
Sweet. Hope to grab DiRT and F.E.A.R.
That FEAR is probably FEAR Perseus Mandate. PM is a standalone FEAR expansion and is actually a reasonably decent substitute for FEAR. It has decently expanded action and is a quality product. The storytelling and atmosphere of the original FEAR only show up in brief flashes in the expansions though.

Also, for the record, FEAR: Extraction Point is the first expansion to FEAR. It is awful apart from a few rousing set piece battles. FEAR:pM is the second and is quite a nice turnaround.
