Biggest Gaming Pet Peeve

i hate it when games contain the words "zelda" and "the legend of" in them. (please don't lambaste me, i really tried my best to like them, yes i did)

unskippable cutscenes is a common one, but I'd like it to go further have and have all cutscenes be PAUSABLE. I played some game recently that had this (maybe ff12, during the real-time scenes?) and it was great. I hate missing the story because I got a phone call or something during a crucial point, and my only option is to leave it going or (maybe) skip it entirely.

Yeah, I know I should remember about FF12 since that's my avatar and everything, but I picked this before FF12 came out (HUGE FF fan), and it was the only FF I didn't feel like finishing. I eventually did, but.. meh. That's another rant for another day.
Forced stealth missions. I HATE these things. It made sure I'll never finish Phantom Hourglass. Unless you're making a stealth game, there's no need for these annoying missions where if you get seen you have to start all over.
Good call. The forced stealthing combined with the timer and having to do everything with the fucking stylus caused me to scrub my save files and trade it. With the exception of Majora's Mask which I never played, it's the only Zelda game I haven't beaten.

Im not mad that you dont like the dashboards I just dont get why you have a problem with them....

Lack of save points or really bad save points

Yea i was thinking of Dead Rising.....

Actualy the worst is when you fight a boss, beat it, and they dont give you a save point right away or they dont tell you where to save right away. Then you die and have to refight the boss over again. This happened in Ninja Gaiden all to often

I hate back tracking or having to replay sections over and over because of poor check points/lack of save anywhere option.

I hate hard bosses that require a zillion hits to kill, yet kill you in a few hits.

I hate timed missions (so I really hated the Ocean King temple in Zelda: PH since it's timed and you go through it 5 or 6 fucking times. :bomb: ).

I hate open eneded, sandbox games where you wander around doing random shit until you stumble on the next story mission.

I hate games where you have to do mundane shit to get money to move on (i.e. Shenmue).

I loathe unskippable cutscenes, especially if they're right before a hard boss where you have to watch it all 20 times it takes to kill his cheap ass.

- Button-pressing mini-games FTL. Significantly reduced the fun of Mass Effect for me.
- Situations that you have to look on the internet (or in a guide) to figure out how to pass. It should never be that hard to figure out.
- Not being able to run or jump, unless you have no legs :)

My three biggest pet peeves are children and racism on live and games that force you to buy a strategy to truly enjoy the game or beat it. Nowadays my strategy guide one is eliminated by the internet but I remember during the sega genesis yrs the anger this caused me as a kid. Having to buy a video that was advertised on the back of the WWF RAW game manual just to do special moves. Also I had to buy a strategy guide to beat Jurassic Park because I didn't know at the end of the game I had to kick a rock. The racism thing is self explanatory, being a black male I hate hearing some racist guy on my team in halo, COD, Gears etc. saying things like "I shot that Ni**er" I seem to get remarks like this once a day when I play and when I call the guy an idiot or something, sometimes half of my team gets on my case for saying something. I probably should play with CAGS I guess.

Another things that bother me is downloadable content for things that are already in the game. My last big one is the level of online whiners. I got MVP by a lot of kills in COD4 and everyone was like your not good you use juggernaut. Also, ofcourse they had to call me gay and other names as well. Then I switch to Stopping Power next game and still get MVP and the biggest trash talkers all left. Also, god forbid you stay in a corner for two minutes then your a "camper" and don't use martydom thats cheap too.

I hate to hijack the thread. Seriously. I really do.

BUT.

When asked what is my biggest pet peeve about gaming?

White American Males.

White American Males (anyone without an accent I assume is American) are the single most racist, sexist people I have ever heard. Yes, its online so there is a certain amount of shit talking that will go on.....but white Americans males seem to take it FAR FAR beyond just normal trash talk. They are so quick to drop n bombs, jew jokes, middle east jokes ect ect. Have lets not even mention what happens if a girl ever joins a game with more than one white American in it.....

I have been a gamer for many years. I have played many a game with all brits, all Asians , all whatever has there been trash talk? Yes. But only when dealing with White Americans will the trash talk solely based on racist comments of the worst kind. Hell a good chunk of the time just hearing my obviously black slight Jamaican accent will prompt 5 white guys to start calling me a $$$$a. I have also noticed that White American seem to have an undying hatred of British people..so much so that just upon hearing their accent will send white Americans into a complete tiff.

Again, I know its online. But to me if a person is racist online then they are racist in real life to. To me there is no switch that you can just turn on and be utterly racist, sexist but turn off along with your xbox. Hell you dont have to long any farther than the OTT on CAG....I think I am one of 10 black guys on this site yet I see the N word dropped many many many times. (none actually by me....maybe a couple dont really recall)

To be frank. From gaming. I do not trust white American males as far as I can throw them. So completely two faced. If there was a way to never again play with a group of white Americans...I would take that in a heart beat. I am a big soccer fan. So I have played many a fifa or Pro Evo game which has be vsing mostly people over seas. And I can go through many many matches without hearing racial slurs. Compare that to lets say.....COD4. Night and Day.

Graphics and "realism" over fun is my biggest pet peeve with Video Games.

Give me Tecmo Super Bowl (nes) and Punch Out (nes or snes) over Madden or Fight Night any day.
I hate that. That is a huge problem in a ton of games. This happens a lot in Dementium.
Well it's a pretty common game design theme to give players a glimpse of their goal at the beginning of a level. Of course, a barrior that makes more sense is prefferable.

I'll second the annoyance at a lack of Southpaw-Inverted control schemes in shooters. I muddled through Mass Effect but never really felt in control because of this missing feature.

My biggest pet peeve is getting lost in games, as in I don't know where I am in comparison to other things.

Overlord for example...No minimap, map, or a compass. All they give you is a print out map with the game that isn't even that accurate and the only way to tell where you are is to run until you find a city or landmark who's name pops up on the screen.

I never did understand the whole lets make fun of foreigners thing that goes on in COD4 either. I have made quite a few British and Australian friends on that game and they all pretty much say I am the only nice American they have met on COD4. That game does have a ridiculous amount of idiots and as a minority it pisses me off. I would never go as far to say white american males annoy me. Some of my closest friends are white american males and they have helped me out through hard times and one of them even almost fought a guy once because he made a racist slur about me as I was going to the bathroom that I didn't even hear. In other words its hard for me to single out a whole race because of a few idiots or in xbox live case, a bunch of idiots.

And to go back to the pet peeve thing, another one I have is sonic games with all the stupid side characters. Sonic, tales and knuckles was nice. When they made me use amy and the stupid fat fishing cat I gave up on that franchise.

Thats kinda what I am saying but just a little off.

I have no real problem with white Americans. I have extremely close white friends who I would go to the ends of the earth for. But from playing video games I do have a very tiny voice in the back of my head that tells me..

"dont trust white people...if they think that just because they are online means they can people completely racist just think about what they are saying when you leave the room."

One of my closest friends who is white and I play COD4 every other night. Once he invited his friends from work to play with us. Within fucking seconds. SECONDS they were talking about how Mexicans(my future wife is Mexican and other really good friend is also so I took great offense) are spics, how jews or this, or germans are that. There is not a doubt in my mind that if I wasnt in the room with them they would also be talking about blacks.

What prompted them to do this? Hell if I know. But I turned off my xbox and swore to my friend I would never play with them again...and if I saw them in real life I would punch them in the face.

I have no problem with white people at all. But I am not going to turn a blind eye to what I experience's when dealing with white people. And if has a culture you guys think its alright to be complete racist, sexist just because you are not right in front of said group. Then thats a problem.

Also, it goes far beyond just a few idiots on xbox live. For one its far far far far more than a few. But one of my best friends is Mexican. He doesnt look it...he looks like a fat white guy. But he is Mexican. And the amount of times we have a been standing face to face with some white people who will just out of nowhere start completely bashing mexican talking about how they are ruining the world is un real. There has been many times where I have had to force able remove him for a room because some guys thought that just because we are not mexican its alright to bash them.

So its not "just xbox live" I go through this every day of my live. This is a thread about gaming so I left it to it.

Thats all I am going to say beacuse I dont want to hijack the thread with this.

I agree with you Soodmeg. I'm a white american myself but I can't stand all the racist people online and even in real life. I don't get why they have to be like that but it gets really irritating hearing every other race get put down for no reason at all.

But to get back on topic, my biggest pet peeve has to be annoying required minigames to advance in a game (yes I'm looking at you breath of fire 3). Great game until you get near the end and hit with a load of annoying required minigames.

I don't really understand not jumping as a pet peeve, it's a fairly useless means of transportation in real life. If Ryu Hyabusa couldn't jump... well that's a different story.

My biggest problem is what I call "Gang Rape AI". For example in race games every NPC car will hit you but they won't hit each other. It doesn't matter that your in 2nd and the guy in 3rd hitting you will cause you to both never reach the guy in 1st. The "AI" is going to hit you.

Or in an FPS the AI will shoot you first no matter how many NPC team mates you have. Even if you are behind cover and your NPC characters are out in the open they will still shoot at you completely ignoring the NPC out in the open.

I'm white & I get called the "N" word all the time just because I have a little bit off a southern accent. You would be suprised how often this happens. Maybe it's because I'm older guy with a deeper voice with an accent they actually think I'mblack, IDK but I've been muting my headset and not even putting it on unless friends are in the room. Oh, and the older guys are just as bad as the kids.

As far as the Brit vs American tiff as you stated, I think alot of the problem is lag and fact as soon as one of the two recognizes the other is in the room someone says, "damn theirs a _____in the room, and that's all it takes to begin an argument.

LIVE has become a "I know you are but what am I/I'm rubber your glue" type of kiddy name calling fest. I'm sick of racism, name calling altogether, and your mom/detailed gay refernces.

Ever beat a team or person and in the lobby they say "You suck", and you beat them LOL. How stupid. I mudered a 10 prestige on COD4 about a month ago "SIKWITHIT" and the guy actually took time to text message me saying "UR GARBAGE" with his motto "numbers never lie" so I sent the message. "If I'm garbage and numbers never lie, what does that make you"?

LIVE support: "our gamer's feedback is our moderator".

that's BS when people give you bad feedback for winning & playing right

It's really anyone on XBLIVE. I've heard all types of people being annoy bags of racist immature douche. But also, everyone generally sounds the same on XBL. So its hard to tell anyone apart.

But it's probably because white males make up the majority of XBL users on traditional games. All the others are playing Football or Futball games.

First of all, I think what Soodmeg is saying is pretty much sterotyping White American Males. I myself am not White (I'm asian). But, I've met tons of White American Males on XBL that are really friendly and nice. Just because someone is racist on XBL doesn't mean they're racist in real life. I'm sure at least EVERYONE on CAG has sworn, made fun of, or verbally attacked another player on XBL. The fact that people are so "racist" on XBL is because it's a shield. Most likely, you will never ever see the people you're playing with again (unless it's your friend). You can swear your head off to another player and the only thing that might damage you is your reputation -- which doesn't mean much.

Living in America, White American Males get all the shit thrown at their face. fuck, anything that comes out of their mouth that SOUNDS racist is racist. People jump on the race wagon like that. For example, if a White American Male said "I hate that guy" -- and the guy happened to be African American, people would assume that the White American Male is racist. Although other races like African Americans, Asians, etc.. in America, I think everyone has it even. So yeah, like I said.

Probably the reason people make fun of each other constantly and are "racist" on XBL is because they can actually get away with it. If you're racist in the real world, chances are:

A.) You get your ass kicked.
B.) You lose your job, get sued, etc..
C.) Both.

If you are "racist" on XBL, no one is going to come to your door and beat the shit out of you. It's the only time besides the internet where you can go all crazy and swear to your heart's content. If you don't like it, here are some options: Mute the person, throw away your headset, Mute CoD4 Channel, or open up a Video Channel or w/e Chat Channel so you can talk to your friend. This shit ain't gonna go away in a long time.

I've got a few peeves although most (if not all) have already been mentioned.

1. Rubber band difficulty/A.I. - this upsets me the most in racing games. By God, if I have the fastest car on the track and have a 50 second lead heading into the final lap if I lose it better be because I messed up big time, not because the other drivers suddenly unlocked an additional 500 horsepower in their engines and go sailing on by me at the last second. Same thing for other sports games.

2. Escort missions - the closest game I've come across to having a decent escort portion was Resident Evil 4, and that was only because you could force Ashley into a garbage container and the enemy A.I. couldn't locate her. Outside of that, it doesn't matter if you're escorting civilians with no logic what-so-ever or (allegedly) bad ass special forces members, they all get in the way and more often than not get themselves killed. Would it really be that difficult to apply just the basic enemy A.I. to the NPCs you protect? That'd make them 10x more useful and those sections may even become somewhat enjoyable.

3. Save spots or checkpoints are too far apart - I understand that most games have a few sections that are designed to be more difficult than the rest of the game. Whether it's a boss battle or you're fighting 20 enemies at a time instead of 2 or 3. You will also likely get killed a few times before you succeed and move on. I don't have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with, however, is when the last check-point was conveniently located 30 minutes prior to said event(s), causing a lot of anger and frustration as you waste even more time to get back to the challenging part.

4. "Perks" that don't make sense in some conditions (glaring at CoD 4) - so, some jabroni has thrown the only grenade he has. He has none in his inventory. He knows it, you know it, and the CIA knows it. However, after you successfully kill him he somehow drops a magical grenade (that he didn't have two seconds prior) and it kills you. If you don't have a grenade available that perk should not be usable in that situation. Same thing with last stand. If you drop your handgun to pick up a M16 (complete with "n00b tube") to complement your sniper rifle you should not be able to magically pull out a handgun to shoot back in those five seconds before you actually die. If it isn't in your inventory, you shouldn't magically acquire it because of your perk. Period. That should be taught in Game Design 101.

5. Explosive barrels conveniently placed wherever there's more than five enemies huddled together within a five foot radius - it's terribly unoriginal and needs to be retired for good.

6. Cut scenes just for the sake of having a cut scene.

Soodmeg's "I have no problem with white people / I have white friends, really!" followed by "I don't trust white people thanks to gaming" Jeckyl and Hyde routine is hilarious. Keep it up.

Cut scenes that you cannot skip. This gets real annoying if it's one of the hardest parts of the game, so you have to watch the cut scene again and again.

I agree.

This made me hate A. Creed the most. Seriously. The cut scenes are like 2 or 3 min long. Why would I want to sit through that more than once.

The first time I played Assassin's Creed, I played it without sound. So, I loaded it up and I had no idea what was going on, couldn't skip, and had to go through the tutorial which was like 10+ minutes.

....

Wtf possessed you to do this?

When your A.I. controlled team can't do jack. In Lego Star Wars any of the NPC characters that are on your side do 0 damage. I mean granted that game is easy as hell, but still a good example.

And someone mentioned in driving games when your opponents don't lay a finger on one another while on the other hand they will sell their soul to Satan just to cause you to wreck.

I'll add a "straight" suffix to Soodmeg's rant and say that I agree (and at the same time chide Soodmeg for standing on the 'egalitarian soapbox' and failing to point out how homophobic gamers are in online play - at least as flagrantly racist as people are).

Then again, I've muted anyone who isn't on my friends list on XBL so I simply don't notice anymore.

My Xbox live mute list increases by about ten a day. MS really should send in moderators but I don't see that ever happening.

Do you mute them because they're annoying? Because I personally don't encounter annoying people very often. I guess it depends on what games your playing. :\

I don't know, I actually like to have my ears bleeding once in a while. :)

I hate, hate, hate when you're waiting for a room to fill up so the game can start and when it finally does you realize the host isn't there. I used to want to kill someone when it happened on Gears of War.

I hate when I am watching a long cut scene (MGS 2) and my phone starts ringing. I mean, I can't pause the game during a cut scene and it would be rude not to answer the phone....

I also hate when I am playing a game and someone else is in the room with me, constantly spewing out instructions on what he/she thinks I should do (i.e. "Go through that door", "Shoot that guy").

Oh and I also hate birds and flying Medusa heads in 2D platformers!

Good call on that. It did indeed slip my mind. I mean I wanted to post my feelings but I didnt want it to become a huge discussion and completely take the thread for a turn for the worst.

Its a good thread and I didnt want it to be locked.

I said what I felt and most people got the point so I dont feel like I should continue to comment on it and make it the focus of the thread.

To actually add to the thread. I hate hype. I hate the hype that surrounds some games.

Its so bad that you cant trust reviewers or even the general public opinion on certain games. You can and will never been ever to get a honest view of how good Halo is. Because there are so many people who hate it just for the sake of hating it....and love it just for the sake of loving it.

That and the legal monopolies on sports franchise IE Madden and FIFA. No company should be able to corner the market on something like a sport. Thats bullshit. Stop being greedy for one second.

Sports bring in so much money by themselfs....why the hell do you need to have a contract with one company?

By the way, I actually hate halo 2 and 3.

Fair enough.

Your sig reminds me of a pet peeve that's pretty endemic to gaming in general: the "now"ness of online play. I played a lil' SF2 on XBL last night and it took a long time to find a single match - because people have mostly moved on. I'd like to try Team Fortress 2, as I've played most of the Orange Box but that - problem is, it's low enough on my priority list that, by the time I get around to playing it, there won't be anyone to play (aside from the fact that the PS3 version sold like $60 syphillis, I think).

If you're an online gamer, you really can't wait for a title to drop to $20 if you want a robust online experience. There are a handful of standouts that have longevity in online play (Halo will be high for years to come), but with more games coming out, let alone the "annual" nature of some titles, let's not fool ourselves: as good as CoD4 is, it may well be yesterday's news by the time CoD5 comes out. I just started playing Saints Row again, for instance - and I don't expect to find much of anybody playing online.

This is a pet peeve, though, that isn't going to go away, as there are so many games coming out, and with the money they make, there's no way that's going to slow at all - or even remain at the current rate, for that matter.

Hmp. But do you think that is more because of the nature of game companies making games that way. As in making them so that they only last a short amount of time by not spending the time to include a robust online game. Perks, level ups, customization, secrets etc etc.

Or do you think that is just gaming ADD kicking in, always wanting the newest latest thing?

More the latter than the former. Much more, IMO.

It's very unsettling hearing a prepubescent voice saying "F*** you, you f***ing [racial slur]."

I like to be able to talk to people because I'm pretty competitive and want to talk strategy, but it's annoying hearing people be such invalids due to anonymity. I wish games had a more streamlined muting function. I don't want to have to wait for the 360 guide to pop up and navigate through a bunch of windows to mute one person.

I'd say one of my biggest pet peeves of games are when games are overly difficult to master. Sure it's good to have a challenge, but sometimes it's just not enjoyable. Dead or Alive 4 and Ninja Gaiden are two games I enjoyed, until it came to boss battles. Absurd. Good job Team Ninja. You owe me like 3 controllers.
