Because rank adds inches to your "e-penis" and they think it actually amounts to something outside of the online/gaming world.

catch up logic in driving games
unskippable cutscenes
bad save systems (playing monster madness and if you hit a checkpoint with 5% health left you might as well restart the level lol)

Unskippable cut scenes

as an RPG gamer, they are the absolute bane of my existence. They don't affect my playing very often,. but every so often when you die at a boss...and have to go through their cutscene again.....:bomb:

Bad Achievements.

I'm also an achievement whore..and 100 hours in beautiful katamari is a terrible achievement, when theres only 20 levels and the longest one takes around ten minutes.

Achievements should award some kind of ability, but not me sitting in the princedom for 40 hours while i watch something on tv.

That reminds me of another pet peeve - people who put time into games they really don't want to, all so they can get another few achievements.

I know it doesn't affect me at all, but if you actually do it, I don't think it's fair to complain about it. It's your addiction, after all, and you're the one in control of it.

I am in control of it, which is why I let the game sit idle and didn't force myself to actually play all of that time. i would have much rather had goals that actually involved me playing and it would have been just fine.

The same could be said of the newness of online games. if you make the choice not to buy the next installment at release, don't complain about no one being there months down the road.

They're both pet peeves, and we are both in control of how we handle and approach them.

Saints Row online. Standby glitch and baseball bat glitch. Both make the user invisible. Oh, and the shotgun that doesn't kill someone at close range with one shot.

I can't think of anything else.

When asked what is my biggest pet peeve about gaming?

White American Males.
Yeah stereotypes are definitely a pet peeve for me. Would I still be welcome on this forum if I said the same thing, but with Black, Mexican, Asian American males?

I'm not saying I'm oblivious to the amount of useless and childish gibberish on LIVE. I have certainly complained about it in other posts. I'm just suggesting you buy a slightly smaller brush to paint with.

My gaming pet peeves are the same as the others here. I'd like to include illogical puzzles that require me to get a walkthrough online. I respect players who need hardcore challenges, and hence difficult levels... but I don't want to bang my head against the wall to finally get through a level... if I can't figure it out in the first 2-3 attempts then I look it up. I'm like whoever else said it earlier, I play games to relax.
It's very unsettling hearing a prepubescent voice saying "F*** you, you f***ing [racial slur]."

I like to be able to talk to people because I'm pretty competitive and want to talk strategy, but it's annoying hearing people be such invalids due to anonymity. I wish games had a more streamlined muting function. I don't want to have to wait for the 360 guide to pop up and navigate through a bunch of windows to mute one person.

I'd say one of my biggest pet peeves of games are when games are overly difficult to master. Sure it's good to have a challenge, but sometimes it's just not enjoyable. Dead or Alive 4 and Ninja Gaiden are two games I enjoyed, until it came to boss battles. Absurd. Good job Team Ninja. You owe me like 3 controllers.
That brings up another point. One of my pet peeves is the 360 guide. That thing is horrid. Just plain horrid. It takes far to long to do anything on it. Going in and out of private chat should be faster than a 5 button combo.

Muting people should also be a simply button press. Because a lot of the time you have to go completely out of your way to mute some one. As in COD4 I have run into a corner and hope to god I dont get killed so I can waste 20 second trying to mute someone.
Yeah stereotypes are definitely a pet peeve for me. Would I still be welcome on this forum if I said the same thing, but with Black, Mexican, Asian American males?

Yes you would. And to be honest thats the oldest cop out there is. You have to remember I am not sterotyping anyone or anything. I am simply reporting my findings. Also.

You are playing into this out right lie that I have no idea where it game from. That 1 single black person represents our entire race. yeah, just because Jesse Jackson cries about every little thing doesnt mean black people as a whole do. Most black people are fine about talking about race.

Stereotyping is thinking that a certain group acts or does a certain thing based on anything but your own experience. I have been on live. And I am simply reporting my findings that whenever I enter a xbox room and there is thattype of talking going on those are the people who are doing it.

You are trying to change it into something else. If every time you go into a room you hear black people being completely balls out racist then thats an why shouldnt you be able to say it?

Here's one that I'm surprised nobody else mentioned:

Short games. I'm not just talking single player, but some games just don't seem to offer enough content in general. Sometimes a game will only have a few maps to race on or only a few hours of gameplay and no multiplayer to speak of, and others just seem to have been quickie projects made to test out a new concept and rob you of the full price of a regular game. 6 to 8 hours of gameplay in a new current gen game is 8 to 10 dollars per hour. In this day and age, a game like Mass Effect, Oblivion, or Halo 3 is a godsend in a sea of short-lived experiences. These days it seems like almost every game I buy I'm ready to trade back in to the shop the next week or less.

Some games have short single player campaigns for obvious reasons like call of duty 4, which has a short single player but amazingly packed multiplayer components. Those games I have no beef with. It's games like Shadowrun and Heavenly Sword that I have a problem with, that just have no business being so short. This is becoming a really popular trend in gaming now though, and it's easy to see why because games cost so much to make now.

Bullshit.

I've ran into plenty of gang banger, ebonics talking black assholes on Live and plenty of Hispanic assholes (many who toss the N-word around all the time) on Live as well. And I've also played with many an awesome minority who was a pleasure to game with.

I'm not going to come on here and say my pet peeve are blacks or Hispanics, or even more specifically that my pet peeve is black or Hispanic males on Live.

My pet peeve is assholes on live period. Race/ethnicity has nothing to do with it.

Short games don't bother me much. Sure, they're not worth $50-60, but they're great as rentals or $20 or less pick ups down the road.

I used to bitch about them, but now that I have so much less free time I have no problem with a 8-10 hour game. Easy to get through when I have a day or two free, and great for playing in a lull between a couple big releases etc.

I'd have an issue if all games were that short, but with it just being an occasional big game here and there that is that short I'm fine with it.

It does kinda blow that being a CAG means that you lose out on alot of the multiplayer aspect of alot of games. Since by the time I pick up a 20 buck game the online is a ghost town or just the hardcore players who are crazy good at it.

If there's something I want to play online, I don't wait for deals. Those you have to get right away for the reasons you list.

I usually get enough play time out of them to make them worth full price.
You have to remember I am not sterotyping anyone or anything. I am simply reporting my findings.
Dictionary: ster·e·o·type (stĕr-) pronunciation
n.

1. A conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image.
2. One that is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type.
tr.v., -typed, -typ·ing, -types.

1. To make a stereotype of.
2. To characterize by a stereotype: “Elderly Americans are the neglected sector of the fashion industry, stereotyped by blue hair and polyester pantsuits” (American Demographics).

Once again, I don't disagree there are a lot of childish fools on Xbox Live, but there jerks of every color creed and nationality.

Let's try to keep on topic of what in games piss people off. Rude / racist people have already been throughly discussed so we don't need to reflect on them again.

Anyways, I'll say repeated cut scenes that aren't skipable. Let's say you watch a cut scene, die, then go back and try again. Most of the time you are still forced to watch the stupid cut scene over and over!

And another one that no one's mentioned....REPEATED lines of dialouge. I mean please. Assassin's Creed, are all the citizens really gonna go back into their house and not likely come out again lol? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Collectathons. Seriously people, we've come a long way. Stop making us collect orbs, flags, coins, whatever. You can award a player for exploring game space/environments without falling back on tired, old NES mechanics.

Uneven difficulty (spikes). Huge stretches of easiness followed by segments of near impossibility. It seems these spikes are designed for the sole purpose of frustration. GoW had these moments with those damn Therian guards and CoD4 with those totally unfair infinite respawn points.

Ranking systems. Video games are fun, not work. Stop telling me I suck. -And when the hell did the letter grade system start including S's?!

Grinding. It's OK in small doses, but with the huge volume of games being released every month, I just don't have the time. This isn't like the SNES days, when we had to wait a few years for another decent RPG like Final Fantasy 3 to come around.

Juggling. I hate when you can get caught in never ending combos in fighting games with nothing to do but button-mash in futility and watch your slow demise. you should always have the ability to tech out of a combo, damnit.

-I'm sure I could think of a few more, but those bug me the most. Achievements should have a whole 'nother thread, 'cause multiplayer, time, and multiple completion achievements are just as annoying.

Dude I am not. I am not grouping all white people in any group. I am simply stating when I go into a room that is the group of people who are always doing it.

Its not an grouping of people. Its a statement of observation.

There is a level of talk that is accepted as internet trash talk. I find that whenever that line is completely crossed and stepped on its by the same group. That group is White American males.

Now if you want to disprove that...go into a room and listen for jew jokes, gay jokes, sex jokes, and tell me who is saying them. I stand by my words in saying that 8/10 times its the same group.

I am not saying all white people are anything. I am not a child...and thats very childish thinking. That all one group is anything. But just because I know that not all white people are like doesnt mean I can turn a blind ear to the ones who are saying it the most.

Damn that hit the nail on the head.

Collecting orbs and such is not a way to extend a game. A. Creed. Your game isnt 20 hours long if 4 hours is spent running in circles trying to find floating flags.

I would also like to add 1 hit kills by bosses. Again its not hard to give a boss a move that takes away 99% of your health. Its just stupid and uncreative.

Also since you were talking about RPGs. One of the things I hate the most is when your Kick ass Axe of Ass Kickery is just another weapon. As soon as you get it every other bad guy in the game now as a uber axe of super ass kickery making your 40 hours quest to get your sword worthless.

Looking at you Oblivion.

Amen, Brother. How could I forget 1-hit kills?! I would have liked No More Heroes a lot more had it not been for the obligatory one hit kill move you had to learn at every freakin' ranking. Of course, bosses usually only resort to their broken-ass, cheap one hit kill moves when they reach that last quater of their lifebar making you replay long fights. You can add moments of boss invincibility to that list, too. Why do I have to circle strafe waiting for the counter attack for upwards of two to three minutes?! That is just plain ol' bullshit.

Nothing spells broke controller like a unskippable cut scene and a 1 kit kill boss battle.

Then you should have listed your pet peeve clearly as "racist white male Americans on X-box live" rather than just "white male Americans."

Even on X-box live, the majority of white male Americans aren't spouting racist crap all the time. You just hear it from them more than say Hispanics as there are a ton more white male American's on X-box live than any other group as that's the majority gamer group in the US which has the most XBL members.

It's annoying as hell. I file a complaint against anyone I hear tossing racial slurs around. But it's not limited to any one racial group, it's just more noticeable among the largest group as the largest group will always have the largest number of bad apples.

Cheaters...

People that think you cheat when your not...

Little kids singing.. yellling into the mic. (actually anybody singing on xbox live)

Host advantage.

Cheap catch up AI in racing games.

Well I agree with that. And I should have labeled my post more clearly. Sorry for the mix up.

Also......catch AI on race games? Hell catch up AI on sports games.

There is nothing like watching the CPU PG now being able to dunk over your 7 2 center all of a sudden in the 4th QRT. Or maybe a running back who breaks 10 tackles on a drive for the winning TD.

Little kids on XBL period are a pet peeve of mine. If they're not singing, yelling, swearing etc., then they're playing with a friend and talking the whole match about shit that has nothing to do with the game.

I wish they'd give an option to not play with child accounts. It wouldn't be perfect as many kids have adult accounts, but it would at least cut some of them out.

It would also be nice if parents actually parented their fucking kids. A 10 year old shouldnt be playing COD4, GoW in the first place.

I don't know about you guys but John Madden's comments dry me crazy. I already hate him in real life why can't he leave me alone while i am trying to play a game, thank god you can mute him!

:rofl:AC2 will be a rental for me because AC had too much repetition for my taste.

Here's another one I was reminded of during chapter 3 of Half Life 2: Episode 1 a bit ago.

Flashlights with limited batteries that have to recharge. Just annoying, and makes no sense that it recharges after you turn it off for a bit. If they have that kind of technology I'd think they'd have batteries that could last more than a fucking minute before dying in a flash light!

Not really a pet peeve but I wish shooters would allow you to carry any number of weapons as you want. I know it may look ridiculously unrealistic carrying 10 different weapons that include a rocket launcher like in HL series and probably diminishes the difficulty curve, but it certainly adds to the fun when one can select different weapons to make a kill.

Loved how one could use a combination of weapons and plasmids and kill splicers in numerous ways in Bioshock. That added a whole new fun element to the combat.

1. Racism/prejudice/homophobia on xbox live.

2. Crappy save systems that make you replay hours of games if you die (lookin at you Mass Effect!) fuck you!

3. COD4's multiplayer functionality. It is G-dDamn 2008 people! This shit should work!

4. Seeing really really cool boss looking things that you never actually get to fight. (Brumak in Gears).

5. Jaggies.

I never really got the gripes with ME since you can save anytime you want other than in combat. Yeah the auto check points are iffy I guess, but since you can save after every battle, it's pretty easy to do just that--clear a room/area and save.

But I'm a save whore (had over 200 saves in ME) as I hate having to replay anything, so I'm used to saving constantly in games that allow it. :D

Yeah I wouldnt have that gripe if I wasnt such a (opposite of save whore???) cheap ass saver, lol.

Oh and BTW, I NEVER had any problems with escort missions. I like having a pal in the game with me, it makes me feel less alone and like I have more responsibilities now than just takin care of myself. I realize tehy can be frustrating with dumb Ai but generally I like em.

Host advantage pisses me off when Im not host, and I love it when I am.

I also really like being accused of being host when in actuality I am not, it's flattering.

A kill cam in multiplayer shooters

If only there was an option to turn it off in todays modern shooters. I mean cmon all I want to do is snipe and not be seen. I guarantee that if you were to take out the kill cam in COD4 all the kiddies would become cannon fodder and would refuse to play the game.

That's why they have Hardcore TDM and DM =/

I know this is petty, but the one thing I hate in gaming more than anything are people who played Final Fantasy 7 and then say its the greatest RPG and thus the greatest FF ever and then when you ask them which other ones they have played they go "DUHHHHH I havnt played the other ones becuase FF7 is the best!"

Also, people who play halo (thats right, its so crappy Im not even going to capitalize it)

Level Scaling- Whats the point of doing quests to level up, get better equipment and save the world if it doesn't even make a difference when fighting normal enemies? I want to feel like a god after I've spent enough time working on my character(s).

Locked Content- This is a newer trend and it has to stop. Nothing peeves me more than developers locking content already on the disc thats only unlockable to preorders/collectors editions or even content locked to be released later on the marketplace.

Rubber Band AI- Especially in sports games...if I'm pulling away all game, I don't want my 20 point lead in the final minutes to vanish because the AI can suddenly steal and make every shot, my shutdown goalkeeper suddenly gives up 3 easy goals, and the opposing teams running back can't be tackled.

Backtracking/Repeated Bosses- see: Devil May Cry 4

Cheap Bosses in fighting games- see: Dead or Alive 4

A couple of new ones:

Same bosses 20 times with something slightly different (Metroid Prime: Hunters bosses) and 10 different sprites for 2600 enemies (looking at you, RPGs!)

Glitching/cheating online. What's the point of even playing? I don't care about single player cheating, but online it's just unfair and unrewarding.

Impossible achievements. 100000 pistol headshots, 200 killing spree, kill someone with a rock at over 100ft.

Unbalanced multiplayer maps.

Multiplayer achievements on game no one cares about (like Prey, for god's sake)

Racists, annoying kids, groups of teenagers kicking people just for fun, people defending a spawn point while the team is at the other end of the map getting the [objective thingy] and praying for help.

And I love n00btubes. I was freakin' sniping with my grenade launcher at GRAW (seriously, I got kills across the whole map quite a couple of times :D)
Multiplayer achievements on game no one cares about (like Prey, for god's sake)
Well I don't know about that one because the developers are hoping that their game will be popular online you know? They didn't think it would be dead. In all honesty I totally loved the Prey multiplayer. Fun run and gun with a few neat aspects like the spirit. I loved the trip mines too!
The Temple of the fucking ocean king.
Amen, pretty much ruined the game for me. As I noted above, I hate timed levels and having to back track through stuff so that was two big pet peeves rolled into one for me.

This is mainly directed to Xbox 360 but almost all DLC costs points. I wish for once there would be free DLC that made a difference, like more levels, options, etc.

AMEN! I was really enjoying Oblivion (30 hours in) til I realized that was happening, then i stopped cold turkey. I was at a certain part where you are tasked with rescuing someone from many, many angry cult members, and I found out that going out and levelling up would do no good at all. So that was that. It sucks, because I really liked the game.

Now, a question... even with the level scaling, maybe your higher-level abilities/spells are supposed to give you an edge? Is that how I was supposed to think of it, or is levelling truly pointless?

Oh yeah, another BIG one: RPGs where the ability system makes every character interchangeable (cough almost every post-7 FF cough). See, I actually LIKED X-2 because its job system harkened back to the best one ever conceived: final fantasy 5. Job system with the ability to carry over learned abilities, multiple job inheritance. Pure awesomeness.

I know a lot of people that would agree with you, but I find the kill cam to be useful. Not for spotting snipers but for learning from your mistakes. One of the most frustrating things about shooters is that sometimes you have no idea how you died. That's when the Kill Cam comes in.

I disagree with this one. I'm 35 with a wife and kids. I love short games. COD4s campaign was just about perfect for me. I can break it up over a few days and get a sense of accomplishment when it's all over.

I have a few long games, but I never seem to get to the end of them. I grow bored of them.
I hate to hijack the thread. Seriously. I really do.

BUT.

When asked what is my biggest pet peeve about gaming?

White American Males.

White American Males (anyone without an accent I assume is American) are the single most racist, sexist people I have ever heard. Yes, its online so there is a certain amount of shit talking that will go on.....but white Americans males seem to take it FAR FAR beyond just normal trash talk. They are so quick to drop n bombs, jew jokes, middle east jokes ect ect. Have lets not even mention what happens if a girl ever joins a game with more than one white American in it.....

I have been a gamer for many years. I have played many a game with all brits, all Asians , all whatever has there been trash talk? Yes. But only when dealing with White Americans will the trash talk solely based on racist comments of the worst kind. Hell a good chunk of the time just hearing my obviously black slight Jamaican accent will prompt 5 white guys to start calling me a $$$$a. I have also noticed that White American seem to have an undying hatred of British people..so much so that just upon hearing their accent will send white Americans into a complete tiff.

Again, I know its online. But to me if a person is racist online then they are racist in real life to. To me there is no switch that you can just turn on and be utterly racist, sexist but turn off along with your xbox. Hell you dont have to long any farther than the OTT on CAG....I think I am one of 10 black guys on this site yet I see the N word dropped many many many times. (none actually by me....maybe a couple dont really recall)

To be frank. From gaming. I do not trust white American males as far as I can throw them. So completely two faced. If there was a way to never again play with a group of white Americans...I would take that in a heart beat. I am a big soccer fan. So I have played many a fifa or Pro Evo game which has be vsing mostly people over seas. And I can go through many many matches without hearing racial slurs. Compare that to lets say.....COD4. Damn bro- that makes me sad! I stopped playing online unless its with friends because of the idiots therabouts, but sorry to hear about racism all over the place.

Here is one honky red bloodied american who thinks you are a-ok! :)

My pet peeve....effing advertising in a game- I don't want to read about the new crappy mountain dew flavor when I'm playing need for speed.

Dammit- I paid for your game, and I have to see adverts all over the place when I'm not playing- why are you sucking my soul out through these evil advertisements!

Also- I hate ugly people in games...namely in Oblivion- some of those models looked like they just walked through nuclear waste or something.

Soodmeg- can you PM me your gamertag? Lets play sometime.

Night and Day.
I'm going to say I have to go against you on all of this. The Black American Male seems to be the most annoying type of person on line. Maybe you've had bad experiences with White American Males, but I've had worse with Black American Males.

Every single time I enter a Gears of War match, I get some random Black guy telling me, and I quote "You gona lose, $$$$a." At that point, I just retaliate with racial slurs. He can use $$$$a, I can use $$$$a.

All the racial tensions in games that I play are started by trash talking black guys. Occasionally, I'll start a racial war over a gears of war match or something because I've run out of stuff to say, but for the most part, I'm not racist.

Don't even get me started on the Brits. The first thing Brits do is attack me for being American. I'm sorry for actually living in the USA. It's as if I had a choice.
