Gates to exhibit Vista Windows upgrade at CES

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Bill Gates on Wednesday will show an avid tech audience the long-awaited major upgrade to Microsoft Corp.'s (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) Windows operating system, called Vista, as the electronics industry's biggest U.S. conference kicks off.

Gates, Microsoft's co-founder and chief software architect, speaks later on Wednesday and is a veteran keynote speaker at the Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, held annually in Las Vegas.

A dozen industries are convening in Las Vegas this week for the industry's annual confab to show off the latest electronic gadgets as they angle for a bigger share of a $122 billion industry. In all, the show will include more than 2,500 exhibitors, 130,000 industry participants and 28 football fields of display space.

A central theme this year is portable digital content, taking video and putting it on various devices, from portable players, portable disk storage, and being able to watch it easily and seamlessly.

Wireless broadcast tower operator Crown Castle International Corp. (NYSE:CCI - news) announced plans to launch live television in several top U.S. markets this year and aims to deliver video and audio services to a range of products from cellphones and portable media players to laptop computers and cars.

Microsoft has promised to launch Vista -- formerly code-named Longhorn -- in the second half of this year. The next version of Office, its office productivity software suite, also is slated to launch around that time.

On Wednesday evening, Gates takes the wraps off the operating system's user interface, and his presentation is expected to focus on the consumer-related features of Vista, such as moving video, music, movies and other digital content easily among PCs and devices.

In addition to Gates, chief executives from Sony Corp. (6758.T)(NYSE:SNE - news), the world's biggest consumer electronics company; Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news); Google Inc. (Nasdaq:GOOG - news); and others will be on hand to give speeches.

Palm Inc. (Nasdaq:pALM - news), for its part, said on Wednesday it had started sales of its Treo mobile phone powered by Microsoft software, a device that could help Palm compete against Research In Motion Ltd.'s (Toronto:RIM.TO - news) BlackBerry for corporate customers.

Palm's Treo 700w device, introduced at the trade show, will run on the high-speed data network of Verizon Wireless, using the Windows Mobile operating system. Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ - news) and Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L).

The new Treo could potentially open up a much bigger corporate market for Palm, due to Microsoft's central role in the desktop computer software and back-office e-mail markets.

Also at the show, Japan's Toshiba Corp. (6502.T) said it plans in March to sell a high-definition, or HD, DVD player in the U.S., becoming the first electronics manufacturer to roll out a player for next-generation DVDs.

Toshiba and Sony, leading rival camps, have waged a three-year battle to have their different standards adopted for the new DVDs, which promise much greater capacity for high-definition movies.

"HD DVD represents the future of HD digital video," Yoshihiro Matsumoto, president of Toshiba America Consumer Products, said.

"It gives consumers a clear migration path from DVD."

Toshiba, along with NEC Corp. (6701.T), has been promoting HD DVD, while Sony and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (6752.T), the maker of Panasonic brand products, have been championing a technology known as Blu-ray.

This year's show features gadgets ranging from advanced satellite car radios to luminescent fibers that can turn clothing into wearable lamps to camera phones that can take nighttime pictures without flashbulbs.

Big Asian electronics makers, automakers, computer and phone companies and even pornographers will be out in force, seeking to define their roles as new technologies blur the line between industries, and allow for media on the go.

Expect us Mac users to have a lot of the following comments.

- Got it, have it, did that, been doing that for three years, introduced with the iPod, iTunes ripoff, not as good as .mac, Final Cut is better, you put that in Office 2004, iLife has been doing that since it came out.

Just a heads up on how bad MS is going to get PWN3D again by Apple.

You know, just a month ago... I would've given you sh*t and told you that Windows can run more programs/games, a Windows based PC is cheaper, and yadayadayada.

Today, I'm fairly confident you're right. I wish I'd realize this 6 months ago so I could've bought an iBook rather than this Windows based PC. Apple OS and computers may cost more but dammit, do they work like a charm.

Oh, and Vista sounds like a joke to me... more like 98 to ME than 98 to XP.

One good thing is that all the clowns who write viruses and take advantage of exploits will move to Vista. They love shiny new stuff.

Shouldn't this belong in the "PC Gaming Section" since this has no real relevence to general gaming or direct connection to the gaming industry?
Windows XP has run just fine for me. I have uptimes of a month for my system with no issues.
Same here. I've had absolutely no qualms with XP and I'm looking forward to seeing what Vista offers...

I dislike Windows XP. I find it to be a water down version of 2000. I've had a few random problems with XP. random BSOD bullshit, but never had any problems with Windows 2000. Highest uptime I've had with Windows 2000 is 19 weeks, 5 days, 7 hours, and 23 minute. I went to a lan party, only reason I shut down.

I've had no problems with Windows 98 or XP.

I don't see what's so great about macs... I paid 200 dollars for my system and it does everything I need.

I'd assume all I could get for 200 would be an Apple Mouse.

You are lucky you dodged the bullet that is Windows ME, god that was a shitty OS.

Pfft

WinXP is very stable if you have decent hardware stuffed into your box.

Now security issues, those abound for sure. I'll go to Vista after the public has beta tested it for 2-3 years first, just like I did with XP.

I'll just run XP into the ground...there's really nothing a new OS could offer me.
If you use Firefox on your XP system, you're pretty much fine, unless you're trying to do all kinds of crazy stuff. for a casual e-mail/internet/occasional old game/porn user like myself, Xp is fine. unless I want super HD Turbo for matching service porn.

Well windows does play games.

Anyway, being a nerd for all things with circuit boards or some form of software. I'm excited to see the changes they have made. However I'm waiting for the blue screen of death when he is showing it off. :D

My last PC was ME. Things were fine at first, but over time it seemed like I had to re-install the OS every six months.

LOL, that is quotable!

XP is a dream compared to the mess that was upgrading from DOS to WIN95. I sill remember how my "Windows 95 Ready" computer wasn't ready at all. I do computer repair on the side and tell most of my clients to get a mac if they don't want so many problems. I will likely never own a mac, but I can fix my own screwups.

What I really miss is my true command line control of DOS (even my linux system can't satisfy me). I used to have different autoexec and config files to boot up to for each computer game, since those were so fussy back in the day.

Anyway, as a reminder, the week Windows XP was released there were some absolutely crazy deals to be had if you bought it. Hopefully they will do that again.

when M$ starts focusing less on incoming money and more on innovation, I'm all for them, but their track record proves this won't happen soon (ie: Xbox 360 Live). Now I would wish Apple to develop a gaming system...

You couldn't be more wrong Vista is no joke bro. Its a complete overhaul of windows where as XP was just a pretty-upped version of windows. Vista is based on windows 2003 server edition which is pretty damn stable (and it pretty nicely coded from what I've read). In addition to that Vista looks a hell of a lot better than any Mac OS (too bad you need like 2 gigs of ram, a dual core processor, and 256mb of ram for your video card to make the most out of vista. Apple would never make an OS thats that system intense because they like to back up all their hardware thats at least 5 years old).

In all honesty vista will most likely be the best Windows based operating system and most likely the best operating system on the market till Apple brings out OSX's successor (I'm not taking about an update like panther to tiger, but OS11a completely new OS). Its also not like I'm bias towards windows, after all I'm a hardcore mac user. I'm just being honest. If you look back a few years ago when OSX came out most mac users downgraded back to OS9 because it was pretty glitchy, but by OSX 10.2 everything was running smoothly.

M$ really out did Apple with vista (than again OSX is a pretty old now, but it was super ahead of its time. Hell it took M$ almost a decade to catch up with OSX) I'm sure right now as we speak Steve Jobs has had a team of people working on OS11 for a few years now and he most likely has another team working on OSX updates. M$ might have its day in the sunshine for now but I'm sure OS11 will roll in like a storm cloud.

They did it was a POS. Think of it as the 3DO where apple licensed off the Tech and a company like sony would make it (It did more than play games, it had the versatility of 3DO as in its a game console and an office machine). Apple I believe never sold the console but it had its logo on it. Someone else sold it and manufactured it (edit bandai manufactured and sold it during the PS1 and N64 era).

Windows has yet to provide me with trouble free experience. XP runs fairly well, but it was much different than the previous versions of Windows. And at the same time, while OSX is a completely different OS... I learned it within a few days and I didn't even need any help.

I'm not saying I won't give it a shot since I can get Vista for cheap through my school so if I hate it, it won't be that big a loss. But I doubt it laptop will be able to handle it since it's so GUI intensive (something Apple has been doing for a while now).

The only problem with OSX is software support.:whistle2:(

Vista won't be so graphically intense on most machines (it has lower settings), so it should run just fine with lower spec machines. Most new laptops coming out in the market will have a Dual Core processor and at least 128 mb of ram for the their GPUs (these models should be able to run it fine). Still its pretty ridiculous people have to heavily upgrade or buy a high end PC to run a operating system at it's highest settings. Overall it could be a pretty slow OS till more powerful machines come out.

I personally can't wait to use vista and OSX on one machine. The new intel macs will have the ability to dual boot into either windows or OSX. Pretty sweet.
