Bionic Commando - Gen. Discussion & Info

If you don't like the demo just because you can't find a game, I suggest getting someone to make a private one, it makes it so much more fun.

Ok, I'm letting everyone know, do NOT put the game off because of the demo. #1, it was multiplayer, the game is focused on single. #2 the demo was broken.

That's the way it works though. A company puts out a bad representation of their game, they're going to lose out on sales. Guarantee. Disregarding the demo's problems and the "Capcom mentality" towards online these days, I did enjoy the demo once I figured out the "secret" of just clicking the right stick whenever I shoot somebody. The auto aim is really bad and even the pistol is a deadly force when you zoom in before using it. Death from above is still totally useless.
EDIT: And they could've chosen a MUCH better map.

DFA though extremely situational isn't entirely useless. When used correctly from a high enough altitude you can dispatch multiple foes in a single stomp simultaneously. The shock wave is at the very least potent enough to put them in the red and in perfect range for a zip kick while they're attempting an escape or counter attack.

Woah woah woah, who's calling DFA useless? I get about 15% of my kills from it, it's all about height.

Though I do agree, the pistol is much too deadly. It either needs a set firing rate, an overheat, or an overall damage reduction.

Got my Game Informer yesterday and this got a 6.25 and a 5.

Summary
+ multiplayer can be a blast
+ great environments
+ voice work and music are top notch
- frustrating controls (cheap deaths)
- crappy story and "the most idiotic twist ending in years"

Ugh. If there is one thing that will turn me off faster than a shit tier storyline in a video game it certainly is adding flaws in the control scheme into the mix. If I didn't have such a great experience with MP I would have easily talked myself out of buying it.

I wasn't hot on the MP, but I'm looking forward to giving the regular game a runthrough. I am a bit trepedatious about how it's going to end up though. :whistle2:?

It got a 6.5 out of 10 in the latest issue of Game Informer and the smaller review gave it a 5 I think. It was a pretty short review and I couldn't really gleam what was so terrible from the game but they did say that the ending has one of the worst twists they've ever seen. They hated it so much they created a top 10 list of things that are less stupid than the ending. (I'm sure everyone is going to say the review is "bullshit" but then will praise GI for giving a game they like a high score later on.)
New launch trailer released today. Game looks gorgeous but everybody might want to wait for reviews on this one. Kind of strange that Capcom hasn't allowed any other reviews out yet.
Edit: Beat to the punch.

Did either review give any idea of estimated game play for the single player mode? That's usually the one thing I'm looking to get out of reviews. Actual experience I leave up to myself.

Much like the Phantasy Star series or Too Human I can imagine this game to be a "Those who love it love it and those who don't don't" scenario. I liked the multiplayer too much to imagine this game to get less than a 7.5

If the single player plays the same as the multiplayer I'm not sure why the controls will suck. It's starting to sound like BC in 3D (gasp).

Lately GI has been falling off a cliff with their reviews, they used to be pretty accurate; IMO, and a trustable source for reviews. I'd say the past three months though, I couldn't have disagreed more with more than 90% of their reviews.

Either way, I enjoyed the multiplayer, which was more than enough incentive for me to go and pre-order it. I just wish Amazon had release-date delivery on this one, like they do with Infamous. Oh well.

We've seen quite a few scores in the 6-7 range on this game. And given that IGN didn't have their "exclusive" 9+ review score, something tells me this game is not so hot. What could be the blame? I imagine the difficulty for one.

I may get hate for this but...

I don't think that people actually know how an object swinging from something works. I read a complain on Gamefaqs where the guy said that when you hit the peak of your swing you lose momentum. Um, that's what supposed to happen.

Let go too early: You drop down and forward.
Let go too late: You 'snap' and just linger at the peak of your swing, not moving forward.
Let go at the right time: You go flying forward.

And honestly all three of those have a use. Sometimes you may be mid swing and you see an opponent gunning for armor so you drop early to snatch it from him (with the arm of course).

Another time you may swing to your peak because ahead of you is some danger that you are better off not swinging head first into.

And of course doing it 'right' is done so you can get around hella fast.

So I mean really, if you were one of the people who had trouble with the 'clunky' controls try doing those things I just mentioned.

My only issue with the controls is that dodging seems useless unless you can dodge and break someone's grasp on you.

I think that the multiplayer map isn't the best indicator of the swing mechanic on a whole because it may operate in a completely different manner when you are going around large cities where if you miss a single latch point, you die. It could be much harder than in the the demo where we were in a really small area with plenty of things to grasp.

Agreed, It's not as easy as the Spiderman swinging and it takes practice, I know I was hating on it in the beginning but now I'm rocking.

I agree though, I find the dodging pretty useless, you run faster and jumping like a maniac seems to be the better option.

Good point. But I will note that if you are unsure about a swing you can turn around pretty quick to latch back on to the point you were on.

Man I'm on pins and needles over this single player. I'll most feel bad if this game sucks and the Bionic Commando podcast disappears and Grin gets cut off hard by Capcom.

Other review scores are already leaking out, and they're much higher scores than the GI review.

UK "360 Magazine" - 4 out of 5
UK "Play" - 82%
Italian "Play Generation" - 88%

IGN Has a written and video review up, looks AWESOME!

Totally using classic Bionic Commando skin, I don't like the dreadlock look.

EDIT: Actually, after seeing reviews I think I'm going to hold out until the PC version. I imagine it will be easier for Capcom and Grin to support and possibly have user created content.

Well I want muh lunch box so I'm still getting it.

IGN US: 8.0 +Most things about the game -Linear replayability (having to replay the whole game to unlock stuff)

IGN UK 7.0 +Right from the get go the reviewer isn't into BC and speaks on behalf of the UK as well. Forgot what he said he liked. -Swinging not up to snuff.

Yup. A total love it or hate it game. I love BC sooo and I enjoy the demo soooo I guess I'll love this. Plus after the past few games I've played I need a challenge. This will be my little Shinobi (ps2) of this generation.

Reviews are in and the verdict seems to be a high 7/low 8. DO NOT watch gametrailers review because at the end it contains a major spoiler. Be warned!

Developers said 14-20 (that huge gap right there should let you know it's bullshit) but all reviews seem to say around ten hours. I'm pretty sure nearly every review has hit that mark.

Thanks its not a game I'm super excited about and I really dont want to do the MP so I guess it could just be a rental.
MP would have been awesome as a standalone XBLA game.
Funny you mention that because on the podcast the developers and producers mention that they envision a future where you buy each portion of a game separately for $20. So single, co-op, and multiplayer are all sold as packages. Sounds scary but could work for some games. I'd think that would fuck over a lot of single-player only games such as Infamous in a world like that.

I was thinking this the whole time playing the multiplayer demo.

I'm heading to the Park in the game and I just got the whip lash move not too long ago. So that's where I'm at. Yeah.

I wish the game had a larger enemy variety. Be nice to see some tanks or even bigger mechs. Maybe they'll be in there later but I doubt it. And I don't mean boss enemies either.

The crappiest part about the game is how you have to replay the whole game for stuff to count towards your challenges and collection. And the most difficult part about the game is trying to get all the collectibles in a level and not dying. It can be fun or a little frustrating.

I like the challenges presented within the game. I just think it's a fun way to show people the different ways that you can tackle situations.

Oh and the swing controls are fine. Any reviewer who says they aren't is just wrong wrong wrong. Hell if you just hold down L-Trigger after swinging you almost can't go wrong.

I finally got the game tonight. I hope to have an FAQ ready for it next week. There's a lot of online help out there already which is a little discouraging, but I'd hate to write about Rearmed and not its sequel.

Gamefly'd this. Started playing it last night and I like it. The swing takes some getting used to. Occasionally I'll die cause I miss judge a swing

BTW I'm using Spencer's retro look.

I gamefly'd this also and it is not that bad at all guys. It's a fun shooter, and the swing mechanic is this games "gimmick" and it's actually pretty fun.

Plus MIKE PATTON :)

:bomb:

Yes!!! I fucking hate that I clear certain challenges, get the achievement, die and loose my reward and I have to do it all over again...fuck that!

Did my ears deceive me or did anyone else distinctly hear Joe say "There's no way out Spencer. You'll just have to fuck it!" during the start of the
mech worm
boss fight?

I could have sworn he said fight during my first encounter with it.

Your ears did not deceive you. Fight it translates to fuck it, in the future. I'll be renting this today. Pretty disappointed that the game didn't live up to Rearmed but should be good for a few bucks and a week.

Pretty mediocre game. There are some really cool parts but man it's annoying not being able to go around the city and having GODDAMN EVERYTHING be a death zone. And yes, the "twist" is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Gameinformer called it with their review.
Spencer has sex with his wife every time he masturbates.
