BIOSHOCK - Gen. Discussion & Info

ya it is a great time to have a 360...sucks since mine just crapped out today for the second time..guess bioshock will have to wait :bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb:

If you liked Condemned: You will like this game. If you liked Dues Ex: You will like this game. I have played for two days now and I dont know how many hours in but I am engrossed. The story is so strange and twisted that you want to find out what is going on. Figuring out how to fight Big Daddies and Splicers with your different plasmids is also tons of fun because they are so diverse and throw so many different things at you...Know they throw the camera at me so we will see where this goes.

This game is definitely one of those games that you have to play. Whether you rent or buy. It is in the same echilon or slightly below Half Life 2, Halo, Zelda and Mario

QFT. Definitely in the same "must play if you care at all about video games" category. My previous favorite shooter was Half Life 2, and at about 3 hours in, this is up there.

Just played the demo a little bit. Seems pretty slick, has a vibe very much like the first time I played the original Half-Life.

If Prime 3 weren't coming out a week after this I'd probably pick it up.

you're batshit insane if you choose Metroid Prime 3 over Bioshock
Ah yes, the 3rd title in a game you've played to death over a revolutionary, original game. Wise choice. :)
Mmm, yup, actually. I'm far more interested to see how "on" the Wii FPS controls are in Prime than in playing anything dual-analog for right now. That, and I've never played a Prime before, so it's a first for me :)

Not like Bioshock is going to suddenly disappear early next year when I'm likely to pick it up and play it.
you're batshit insane if you choose Metroid Prime 3 over Bioshock
Color me batshit insane, too, then ;). MP3 is a must buy, Bioshock is a must look at some time in the distant future for me. Which is saying something as I haven't played ANY of the games you all compare this too - just not my type of thing. Though if the great reviews keep pouring in, I *may* rent it some time in the next month just to give it a shot.

Damn, I don't know if I should get this or Blue Dragon.
I have Blue Dragon pre ordered, but now I want to change it to Bioshock because it's so damn awesome.
I think Bioshock is going to end up as the best reviewed 360 game of all time, if this keeps up. 5 points higher than the next two games on Metacritic.com, GoW & Oblivion.
And on Gamerankings its almost 2% higher than the highest ranked game of all time, Zelda OOT. Granted, there's still quite a few reviews to come in but quite a few have already been posted as well...

Usually I try not to get too excited about games because I get let down but I don't even think its possible with this game at this point.

Ok, this "I'm getting MP3 first over Bioshock" is one thing but to even consider getting Blue Dragon instead of Bioshock is just plain nuts.

My game calendar is already full with Prime 3 and Halo 3 and that pesky school starting up again. But, of course, heaven forbid someone should want to play something else before Bioshock!

It looks really sweet. It's very much the "next-gen" look I've been waiting for. It has color. I really thought GoW looked like crap, but Bioshock really does things well. Who knew that the Unreal engine was capable of more than just many shades of gray and brown? ;)

But, of course, heaven forbid someone should want to play something else before Bioshock!

It's not that. Hell, I'm picking up Two Worlds along with Bioshock. Metroid Prime 3 just.. honestly, have you played Metroid Prime or Prime 2 recently? Or played it after you beat it? I'm not a huge Metroid nut, I guess it'll be okay, but you'll tire of it quickly..

..and that's when i'll pick it up, i'll grab the used copies that you guys trade in towards Bioshock.

?!

Wait a minute.......Gears of War looked like crap???? Really? Really?? I understand the complaints about the limited palette but doesn't a world at war look mostly brown and grey? Like someone's gonna be plantin flowers and shit in the middle of a warzone? Sorry for going OTT but that had to be said.

EDIT -- Damn you and your fast fingers, Happy Panda!

But it's over 3 discs of turn based fun.
Ok, this "I'm getting MP3 first over Bioshock" is one thing but to even consider getting Blue Dragon instead of Bioshock is just plain nuts.
Actually, I have Blue Dragon preordered as well and the original plan was going to be for me to play it over Bioshock as it is more my style of game. However, that was back when it was hyped up and Bioshock looked like any number of other games. Now the roles have flipped and Blue Dragon is looking like just a barely above average JRPG, so I will probably wait on that. I'll just stick to Metroid for now ;). And to whoever it was that said we've "played this to death", I haven't - I played Prime almost all the way through 2 or 3 years ago and barely touched Echoes. So MP3 will be pretty fresh for me.

In my opinion, GoW was crap as in the style, not the execution. It obviously was technically fairly complex, but it's a shame that it's dark, gritty, colorless design didn't allow you to appreciate it.

And Scorch, no I haven't played Prime 1 or 2 recently. In fact, I've never played them. Thus, Prime 3 will be fresh as can be for me.

I don't even own a Wii, but I'm buying Metroid Prime 3 and borrowing my sister's Wii.

But, fuck that. If I had to choose between the two, I want something new.

Perhaps that's why you're so hyped for Prime 3. The first two got stale for me quickly.

Double ?!?!

I also just watched a video on youtube of
The first chance you get to either harvest or save a Little Sister. Wow. Like. Watching the Little Sister try to run away and cower in fear from you...IDK if I could ever harvest her, despite how ugly she may look, she still is too much like a little girl, it's a little unnerving for me. On the flip side, when you do harvest her, she turns into a slug thing. Weird.

Gotcha - I can understand that. It's just that for me (and I'm sure there are others) this genre of game is not for us. It irks me a bit when people claim it is a "must buy if you love any kind of games" thing. That just isn't true. Hell, the hype on this has gotten me at least to consider it, which is fairly remarkable in and of itself ;). Like I said, if it continues, I will definitely give this a rental (when it becomes available - will probably be pretty hard to find at my local Blockbuster or Hollywood for a while).

I'm just worried that if, as someone in this thread claimed, the Big Daddies are extremely hard to fight, then I'll be totally outclassed. I don't usually play any first person games (Metroid is the exception) so I'll be pretty clueless about how to play, particularly in tougher parts (though I managed part of the demo just fine).

But that's always the double edged sword of good graphics. Splinter Cell has awesome graphics but the game isn't set in a variety of environments. That's just what the game is. You can't be pissed off going into a game that was advertised as dark and gritty. I'm not going into Bioshock wondering where the hell the sun is.

We as gamers, should support developers/publishers who take a chance on a new IP instead of producing another sequel, especially a brilliant one such as this.
I don't even own a Wii, but I'm buying Metroid Prime 3 and borrowing my sister's Wii.

I'm fairly convinced that even a year from now, Prime 3 will still be $50. Take2 has a much better track record at lowering prices, though of course Bioshock may be an exception. We'll just see :)

I wonder if my CC owes me a Best Buy gift card yet. That might get me to bite earlier ;)

It doesn't look like this game will need any help from me ;). I'm sure it will be a huge seller.

I agree whole-heartedly. Unfortunately, the public loves sequels.

So, since Nintendo hates price drops you're going to support that instead?

That sucks, but it's your money/gameplaying time.

The Metroid Prime series is actually the one series that usually doesn't hold up well in pricing. MP went almost directly to the clearance bin, Metroid Prime 2 dropped from $49.99 to $14.99 in 6 months.

But enjoy it, it'll be decent. I hope. I'm looking forward to it, but not on launch day. I'll give it a rent or two
So, since Nintendo hates price drops you're going to support that instead?

That sucks, but it's your money/gameplaying time.
Not saying I agree with it, but I see no reason not to get the game right away if its not going to see a price drop for a long time. Actually, waiting and then buying it at full price a ways down the line would be doing far more to "support" their pricing strategy than buying it upfront. But, I'm not actively supporting anything corporately with my purchase. Prime 3 has a lot more that interests me than Bioshock does at the moment (e.g., is the FPS a viable genre for the Wii?).

You guys enjoy now. I'll be around to catch up soon. :)

The flip side of the argument (in favor of buying Metroid at release) is that half (well, OK, maybe 1/4) of CAG runs around putting down the Wii with the it's two Gamecubes duct taped together with added waggle meme (though that seems to have died a bit recently). So I say it is entirely necessary to support "hardcore" games on the Wii (something that isn't a mini-game compilation at any rate). So there ;). These types of games will always come out for the 360, no problem.

Edit: Responding to Daroga below so as not to make yet another post - I actually composed this message at the same time as your last one - we're talking in parallel and not really addressing each other

Anyway, I've made my point and am done as well - continue on with the regularly scheduled Bioshock hype!

And to get you back on track, here's the metacritic page for it:
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/bioshock
98/100 average on 11 reviews - that really is phenomenal!

Blue Dragon is getting a respectable 82, which surprises me given the amount CAGs seem to hate it.

Alrighty, let's stop this talk now, or move it to the general gaming thread. I didn't mean to derail everything with one little comment. ;)

Wow this game is receiving great reviews. Definitely a pick up later during a price drop or sale, maybe I can get a new HDTV and setup the surround sound for it to be really enjoyable. Demo was fun, felt like what I was expecting for condemned plus a lot more.
ZOMG I can not wait.

Somehow I've even kept myself from playing the demo because I don't want to ruin anything.
Same here.

I'm not even a huge fan of shooters in general, and I know almost nothing about this game, but you simply can't deny consistent praise like this. I'll be picking this up Tuesday morning on my way to work, full price and all.

Since someone mentioned originality before, I will say this:

I was playing it earlier tonight, and my wife (who plays enough games with me to know what she's doing) walked past the TV, and after glancing at it, asked me what part of Oblivion this was.

I called her a dumb broad and sent her back to the kitchen (not true), but afterward it sort of struck me how it could totally appear that way. First person, melee weapon in right hand, magic in the left. Look fast enough and you really can't tell the difference between a splicer and an imp. Here you hack, there you lockpick. Even the HUD. They call it Eva, but it's really just a art-deco mana bar.

I do think the game is very original, but its funny that there will always be some sort of gaming conventions that will never change.

You would actually not play a game for fear of it being too difficult?

EVE mang, EVE! :p

But on the other hand, :boxing: for getting it early.

snickers. What's up ryles?

Man I cannot wait for this game I cannot stop thinking about how I have been waiting for another Shock game since System Shock 2 ugggghhhhhhhh.

going back to the comparison to metroid prime, while MP was fun, looked, and sounded great, it was really lacking in the story department. because of that, in retrospect it's not that memorable of a game at all, the music is probably the best thing in it for me. the series needs to evolve with the competition actually having compelling stories.

after playing the bioshock demo i already know it has more story than MP.
