BIOSHOCK - Gen. Discussion & Info

I'm about 4 hours in and just beat the second level. So far I'd say it's easily the best game I've played since Twilight Princess. The reason I'm not that far is I feel like I spent a quarter of the time playing just looking at the in-game posters and decorations. This is how videogame environments should be.

My only (very slight) criticism is that you need to go to those machines to rearrange your plasmids. I feel like that's something you should be able to switch around from the menu, but that's just me. I'm sure it will get less frustrating once I get more plasmid slots, but it was annoying in the second level where you get new abilities, but there's no places to switch out your plasmids, so I was without my nifty firepower for the rest of the level and had to go back upon starting level 3 to seek out the hidden goodies I missed.

Otherwise it's an amazing, amazing game. Can't wait to play it some more.

I am playing on the 360, and having some major framerate issues, to the point where the game totally freezes up for 2-3 seconds quite frequently. It happens during battles, running, doors opening, everything. Weird thing is, it didnt happen the first 5 hours at all, and it just started up all of a sudden. Any idea how to fix this?

that's probably your 360. you could try turning on the "Unlock Framerate" option, but that may not fix it...
Wow, I've officially played this game for more than 12 hours straight. The last time I did that with a game it was with Oblivion. Time for a break.
Whilst I can't top your 1337ness/awesomeness, I can say I played 8 hours strait. Its such a great game. But I do have some minor complaints

-This is one of those games that you wish you had a flashlight in it in.
-Some of the worst lip syncing in any median I have ever seen.

Everything else is fantastic. I was reminded that my sound system could get REALLY loud with this game. You will feel every single step from a Big Daddy.

The game play is awesome. And it was well worth the money I paid for it.

Also the Figurine is Pretty Awesome.
-----------
Gametrailers gave the game a 9.5

ok, the demo made me cave. Well, that, and CC's price (PMed at WalMart since BB was sold out). I've very early on, just into the medical pavillion, but gosh is the stmosphere amazing.

I'm playing it on easy right now to just mainly get the story and the feel of everything since I can already tell this will liekly be replayed by me many-a-time on higher difficulty settings. And as I said somewhere else, this is the first time I've gotten the "wow" factor with HD visuals. The colors and everything int his place is fantastic.

Well my figure is broken, but it's only the screwdriver looking thing... I was so pumped up to play this and got it, and just got back... damn college starting early, otherwise I'd be all in this game right now. I guess it will only make it better to play tomorrow.
I am a big pussy and can play this game alone. It is creepy and a bit nerve racking, but I keep playing. Don't be such a vagine, it is awesome. Silent unnerves me and the rest of the horror genre usually doesn't interest me. Seriously, this game is the shit!

I need help. I am early in the game and need
to find the telekenisis power. I already have the fire and I need a damn shotgun.

Thank you.
I picked up the last copy at CompUSA with a PM from CC. CompUSA coming through in the clutch 2x in a row now. GREAT customer service, at least at my store. I got the 2 1600 XBL Points card PMed there, and the guy went in the back to look for Bioshock for me despite believing it was sold out. Niiiiiice.

It's unfortunate I have to run to a couple of friends' houses right now so I won't be able to play tonight, but tomorrow I'll have a lot of free time. I'm looking forward to it.

I felt the same way with the demo. It was REALLY unnerving for me, but I pretty much forced myself to play through it....the end where the shit ton of splicers start banging on the window though....creepy.

I'm at the "no turning back once you go forward" point, so it is definitely as short as people say it is. I am, however, missing a bunch of achievements, so that will probably add to things. A second play through will probably be fun, considering so much goes on that you forget half the things that have happened.

Story is really good though, albeit a bit predictable. I like the little Citizen Kane moments with Ryan on the TVs. Classic.

edit: I'd stick it playtime wise just higher then The Darkness.

I'm listening to the LE Soundtrack right now. Track One sounds like an experiment gone terribly wrong, Track Two showed a little promise before the vocals dropped in and now it's only marginally better than the first, and Track 3 is passable at best if you can get past the repetition of the refrain...

I can't believe Moby is actually behind this "album" (if you can call it that). It sounds like these songs were slapped together in Garageband by a summer intern at a mixing studio.

I was actually looking forward to some period music, and instead we get this. Lame 2k, lame.

Not sure on what my time frame is, but at this pace I am thinking it is going to take me 20+ hours. I played about 4 hours today and am only at the second level. The Neptune something.... it is too late and I can't think of the name.

I may have encountered a possible glitch in this game. On the third level I can't for the life of me find the third little sister though I can easily locate all the big Daddy's. There used to be one in the prison area with a little sister, but I died at the same time as the Big Daddy and by the time I respawned I could no longer find the little sister and instead there was a new Big Daddy roaming around there, but with no little sister. Is there something I'm missing here, orwill I need to load an earlier save?

Just follow one around, he should head off to an area that has a hole in the wall. It's the one's that are bronze, the hole in the wall that is. He will start to knock on it with his hand, which is to call out one of the little sisters.

Sorry I kinda worded it weird, I don't know what those holes are called.

I tried that. I spent a good 40+ minutes stalking big daddies, but no little sisters ever came out of the holes. Upon further research I do believe this to be a glitch. Many have reported finding 4 little sisters in this level (where one was a respawned version of an already killed one). I think what happens is that a some point in this level there is a bug that causes the little sister(s) you've already killed to respawn and prevents others from showing up. It's just a thought as the 2 that I killed were both in the same location (at the beginning of the level) and the other two refuse to show up. I think I'm going to have to reload an earlier save:(

This makes me pretty angry as up 'til now I've considered the game to be a masterstroke, but having to replay the last hour or two to get past a glitch really leaves a bad impression. From what I gather this is the only game ending bug and it's not too far into the game (unlike Twilight Princess' infamous game-ending glitches), but it's still a pain in the ass for a game that's otherwise so polished. I bet a patch will be released soon.

Wow, simply wow. This game is awesome. I picked my LE up yesterday morning at GS and I actually asked the manager wether or not they had any broken ones and he said no. In Fact only 3 LE copies were sent to my GS, one for me, one for the manager and one other guy preordered a PC LE copy. But fortuneatly, lol, my big daddy was broken. The tip of his drill snapped off, What broke on your big daddy?

So I played this game for about 5 hours last night and it was an awesome game, I mean it kept you tense as well as being really creepy like
When you were in the medical pavillion and you come up and see Steinman stabbing the body on the table and then there is the three dead bodies tacked to the crossses.
, that really creeped me out.

Also can anyone tell me with as little spoilers as possible when you will be able to get more Plasmid slots?

Does anyone else feel that playing on Hard sort of interrupts the narrative?

I'm no videogame beginner but where I am now on hard, I'm dying very, very frequently and the wonder of the first couple levels is being replaced by frustration. I think I'm going to start over later today on Normal. I want my first completion of the game to be about the story, not about the insane fights I managed to get myself killed in. Later I can worry about going through on a higher difficulty.

I just caught this off another forum.

Minor spoilers on powers?
"You will love this when you can start pitting 2 big daddies against each other and walk away with almost 200 dollars and only have to use a hand full of bullets."

How the hell do you pull that off? That sounds awesome!

There is a plasmid that you get that enables to have a big daddy on your side for a short period of time.

Not a spoilers since its in the manual. You can buy more slots with Adam once you find some Gather's Gardens. However, you just go see those or the other machine that lets you switch them out until after the medical level.

On another note: Anyone else fully upgrade the
bee power
and find it completely pointless but totally hillarious?

Maybe she ran into my game. I had an extra little sister in that level, I was only supposed to have three, and I had four.

You don't have to start over to switch difficulties. You can do it from the pause menu. Which begs another question - can you get the hard achievement by switching to hard right before the end?

I doubt it. The game probably monitors what the difficulty level is set at when you complete each level.

^ Yeah, when you switch difficulty levels there's a message specifically saying that it will affect Achievements.

If that is the case, I might consider playing the remainder of the game on Easy and play Normal my second time through so I can just concentrate on the story. I think I'm different from most gamers where I play games for storyline and immersiveness first, and challenge second. Though if a game is purely action based like Halo and Gears, I never play Easy. I heard Big Daddies are ridiculously easy to take down though on the lowest difficulty level and most normal enemies die in one hit.

I think I'm going to do that as well. I really want to just absorb the atmosphere and get into the story. I'll beat it on hard on my second time though. Won't even bother with normal.
What are the differences between medium and hard?

More objectives? Or lame ol' increased enemy health, decreased firepower, less ammo, etc?
i think it might be, when you die and respawn all the enemies have full health, not sure though...

The AI is different. In easy it's really easy to kill the splicers/etc, on Medium it's a little harder, and on hard they're pretty hard to kill and smarter.
I'm playing on medium, and that's pretty alright for me.
Though I keep running out of ammo.

Quick question (friend picked up my special edition copy for me since I'm out of the country until next week). I'm kind of paranoid I got a broken copy and can't check the box myself, but my friend took pictures and said it looks fine (emailed them to me). He did say that all the boxes at EB had some rattle to them.

Does this mean I'm screwed and that something (the figure or a dvd) is broken/loose?

If your figure is broken go to the 2k website, they'll replace it and give you a printed art book to boot. I highly doubt the game is loose, you're fine.

If you really want a challenge in this game, don't put it on hard, that just makes you take far more damage. Just turn off auto-aim.

I found the game to be a little too generous with auto-aim. Just fire in the general direction and you will hit.

did you get extra adam, because if so that is awesome

who cares, just send it back to 2K.

Finally got the game today.

Played for a couple hours.

Most amazing moments:

Finding the shotgun. Lights go off and you are surrounded by splicers. Absolutely insane.

Advertisement for "dealing with splicing".

Woman: "What's happening to me, I feel odd, and sometimes I imagine things that aren't there"

Man: "You'll be fine, but maybe it's time to hold back on the splicing: remember: a slow splicer is a happy splicer."

And then Dr. Whatshisname (the plastic surgeon). Wow. Feaky shit.

Also all the quotes on the wall, refferences. This stuff is amazing. "Above all do no harm" writen in blood on the ground. "Aesthetics is a moral imperitive."

This is some very heavy stuff in the first hour of gameplay. After beating Dr. Saltsman (or whatever his name was), I unloaded nearly all the amo I collected (before finally finding the pool of whater in the basement I should have used to begin with), and I'm exhausted from playing this game.

Absolutely amazing.

So, keeping in mind I've only beaten the first boss
(maybe second boss, if you count that one guy with the grenades in the Creamatorium)
, here's a prediction:

Little sisters and Big Daddys were part of the splicer resistance. Doesn't seem to me Ryan (at least in his "right" mind) would have thought up of them.

So I've been wanting this game for months and I played and replayed the demo just frothing at the idea of being able to play the full game. I had a blockbuster coupon for a free game rental so I stopped yesterday and got the first copy. I was the first person to rent the game from this blockbuster. I drive home and throw it in my 360 and as the disc tries to spin my 360 makes a noise like a choking duck. I tried a few discs and sure enough my 360 maintained the mallard with emphysema sounds. Curse you Xbox, curse you Bioshock!

Yeah, I ended up renting this too. And I, as well, had a free rental coupon (mine was from Family Video). Now I have this game out for five days and half-price rentals for two weeks (if I want to rent another game it's $3.50 for five days). My coupon was even expired, but the lady was so nice she used it any way.

Spoiler for beginning of the game.
Was thinking back to that first audio recording you pick up of that woman getting attacked. Was it just me or could you hear "Long live Atlas!" in the background? Oh noes!

Hmmm... shooting from the gut here: Atlas was the leader of the resistance, maybe. Perhaps he was directly responsible for some of the most fucked up stuff (developing Little Sisters, etc). Maybe he's using you to do more than find his family.

Yeah, but the challenge is to hit them in the head, especially when they're swarming you and everything's riddiculously intense. Pulling off a headshot is so intense and rewarding in this game.

I heard
"Down with Atlus!"
, but I'm probably mistaken because that doesn't make much sense.
