BIOSHOCK - Gen. Discussion & Info

Admidst the bickering, can I ask a question? ;)

When you pause the game and it shows the Little Sisters in the elvel, does that change as you rescue/harvest them?

The reason I ask is this. I'm in Neptune's Bounty
and I've gotten the 3 pictures and I was heading back to deliver them when the game comes up and says, "Um, you missed some Little Sisters, you might want to go back..." I killed 2 Big Daddies ("Rosie"?) with whom I found no little sisters (one in the aqua tube, one in the section where you find the spider guy near Room 5). Am I missing something? To these hulk enemies appear without the sisters attached? The pause menu has 3 pictures, two Little Sisters by themsalves, and one with the girl w/ a Big Daddy. That's been the same since I fought the two sister-less enemies.

Great game, and I'm really digging it when I've got time to play.

No. The best way to place a game is your own opinion.

I also thought LoZ: OoT was overrated.

Different strokes for different folks.

I think Bioshock is slightly overrated, but that shouldn't take away from you enjoyment since it does not matter to you. So, if I want to come in here and say "I don't think this game deserves a 10", why can't I?

Yes. The big daddies will appear without a little sister. They will get let sisters out of their holes when a dead body is near by.

And yes, the pictures at the bottom of the pause screen will change after you rescue or harvest.

The picture of the little sister and the big daddy together means you didn't harvest/rescue that one. And yes, big daddies do appear without little sisters. If you see one, and there's more sisters left, just follow it until it gets to one of the holes. It'll knock and call her out.

So with 2 pictures of lone sisters and one of the apir, I have a Big Daddy w/ sister to take down and two to let them call out of the hole?

If I've already killed them do they respawn or am I SOL?

It's not that you can't state your opinion, it's that you shouldn't call out others opinions as wrong (with the occasional exception for something like RuneScape) - Trakan referred to the 10/GOTY people as delusional and fanboy crazy.

And no, I'm not mad/fuming or anything, and this isn't "interwebs drama", I'm actually having a really good time arguing without delving into GameFAQs like bitching/moaning.

They respawn, just keep wandering around.

No, you have 2 you harvested/saved and one still running around somewhere. I'm not sure if the Big Daddies respawn. I never killed them before they called a sister.

No. If you killed them it's probably the picture you're describing. All little sisters you haven't deal with , even in their hole, have a picture with a big daddy.

They do not respawn, each little sister is an important decision in regards to the ending.

EDIT: Oh wait, you're talking about the big daddies? Yeah, they respawn constantly.

Unfortunately, you have probably encountered the same horrid glitch as I did. Let me explain:

Big Daddies and Little Sisters are spawned separately. Big Daddies respawn, Little Sister don't. In order to find a Little Sister, all you need to do is follow a Big Daddy until he pounds on a vent. If there are any Little Sisters left in the level, one should come out. If you've dealt with them all, the Big Daddies will pound a few extra times and walk away.

However, there is a glitch in Neptune's Bounty making it so the game thinks you've dealt with 3 of them, though you've only dealt with 2. A far more common glitch makes it so an extra Little Sister appears in the level. That's just silly. But yes, you will need to reload an earlier save (preferably before the level or early on in in) and replay the whole thing again.

I still have no idea what causes this glitch and it was easily my biggest mark against the game as a whole.
The game still thinks according to the pause menu that I've only gotten two. Does that happen even with the glitch?
Just follow a Big Daddy and find out lol.
The game still thinks according to the pause menu that I've only gotten two. Does that happen even with the glitch?
Haven't you only gotten two? The pause menu seems to keep accurate track of how many you've dealt with. The glitch is merely that the third sister fails to show up. Very sad.

I just got to the submarine part where you meet up with Atlas. Ever since the ice area, where you have the flash back, the graphics have been all grainy. The have not returned to normal yet. Is this normal?
Ugh. My 360 just froze at the Gatherer's Garden in
Point Prometheus
. Very frustrating. I hope I saved recently. ;)
My 360 has frozen about twice while playing this. I'm adapting a "save early, save often" policy, because it's really 30-45 minutes of play I've lost each time.

are you guys who are getting freeze ups and stuff playing on older systems? just curious if it might be a heating problem.
are you guys who are getting freeze ups and stuff playing on older systems? just curious if it might be a heating problem.
It's not a heating problem. After I first starting getting the freezing, it now does it even when the 360 is freshly turned on. The problems with me started with missing textures about halfway through the game and things got steadily worse.

So i just finally got this tonight and I have to say that it has lived up to the 'Shock' series in terms of scares. I will say that System Shock II was probably a little more creepy just due to the whole nature of the game itself. Definately had some freaky moments so far.

A few that stand out

when your going into the funeral home and you go through the water (water freaks me out anyway because you have no clue what is in it) and the lights go out and the guy disappears

The point where you get the shotgun for the first time and all the lights go out and my Dolby Digital amazing sound system had sounds all over the room to the point where i was looking around IRL at one moment and thought holy shit
are you guys who are getting freeze ups and stuff playing on older systems? just curious if it might be a heating problem.
I'm on an olderish system. Produced early this year, so it doesn't have the good heatsink or whatever.

But ya, mine's chilling on top of a freezer with open space all around it. Rarely freezes.
I think it has the best art direction of any game I've played, and it's in my top 5 games ever at the VERY least (top 3, probably). Therefore, according to you, I am "fanboy crazy" and "delusional". You didn't call me out specifically, but I was still part of your generalization.
The art style and graphics are two different things. The atmosphere of the game was amazing, I agree with that. I never saw any post of yours mention it was in your top 5 or whatever.

Anyways, you think it's a 10, I don't. Let's agree to disagree. I'm done.

There was only one missing texture, and that's when I just reloaded a save standing by a little sister vent
about to call her out
and there was no texture on the little sister vent, but then it came back within seconds.

I did get ALOT of freezing in the very last level, five minutes to the end of it (five minutes to the end boss). It dind't force me to restart, but for a couple seconds everything would lock up all glitchy-like.

Of course, at this time I had over 700 MB of save files that probably didn't help things along.

Alright this is really bugging me I'm at Fort Frolic, before meeting Cohen and I just need to know; how much more of the game is there (percentage wise)? It's not that I don't like the game, far from it (easily in my top 10 all-time greats), I just want to know how much more to go before I finish the game.

EDIT: Playing through the level mentioned above and I seem to be stuck.
I'm at the point in the Cohen level where I can go up to his room (and he says something about not being ready yet), but I can't go through a glass door next to some sort of elevator shaft thingy. I've searched around for an alternate route to no avail AND the arrow is pointing me in direction past the door.

Try going up the elevator to your left when facing the glass door.

I forget exactly how that section went, but I remember being confused for a second as well.

You're about 70% done, depending on how long you spend exploring from now on.

Aright, I see what I did wrong I forgot to hit the elevator button.

Thanks for letting know how far along I am, I plan on saving as many of the little sisters as possible and I usually spend an inane amount of time exploring the levels, so I've probably got a good number of hours to go -- which is awesome, but it looks like Metroid Prime 3 will have to wait.

Question (engame spoiler):

Why were you on the airplane in the first place?

Why did Fontaine bring you topside and put you on a plane over the atlantic?

Did he just need to perfect the illusion so that you'd take out Ryan for him?

It seems a little... extravagant.

Seems like he could have found an easier way to send his pawn after Ryan.

Maybe Ryan was getting wise to his plan, so Fontaine needed to get you out of Rapture. Then he just sent you a package with orders to come back when the time was right.
F'n A I died trying to
kill Cohen, and the boss battle just ended. Can I end up killing him later?

I myself killed him but I heard you will see him later in the game, so maybe....the prize you get in that box for beating him isn't that great anyways.

Question about how far I am from the end

I'm at the Olympus Heights (I think that's it's name) and I'm near the goal for finding the cure for the mind control plasmid. How far am I from the end? I've explored and hunted down all the tapes and occasionally went back to previous levels just to make sure I got everything and I'm clocking about 10 hours so far. I'm moving and have to pack up my 360 soon, am I close enough to the end where I can beat the game before needing to pack it up? I hear people talking about 18-20 hours but it seems like some major plot stuff just happened so I think I'm near the end.

I just got Bioshock last night and only got like 45 minutes to play but so far this is the first game in a really long time where the atomosphere is so captivating that i find myself just standing around looking at everything. I haven't done that probably since GTA 3. Like i said i haven't played much of the game but so far i am very impressed.

Are there any little sisters left to harvest/save after
Point Prometheus
?

I have gotten all on this level but haven't gotten the achievement (Harvesting/Saving All Little Sisters) yet. Do I have to beat the game first?

You should get the "Deal With Every Little Sister" achievment the minute you deal with every little sister. The "beat the game without harvesting any little sisters" achievment requires you to beat the game first.

There are no harvestable/savable little sisters after point promethius. Point Promethius is the very last level.

You probably missed a little sister earlier in the game.
You get the achievement before you beat the game.
Are there any on the level I mentioned?

I have been harvesting little sisters and I backtracked to make sure I got them all. Went to each level and hit start to make sure all were taken care of.

Weird.
That's what I'm guessing.

Is taking the Bathysphere to each level and hitting start to check how many little sisters are left a good way to make sure I got them all?

I only ask because I hear either the harvesting or saving is glitched somehow.

Not sure, but I know that if I tried leaving a level without dealing with them all, it would warn me. Maybe try hoping around various levels and see if you get a message.

Thanks. I checked the start menu on every level before the one that I'm on and it shows that I've harvested all of them.

Now I need to decide if it's worth wandering around each level or just forgetting about it and finishing the game.

It's annoying to find this out when I'm so far into the game.

I'd say if you try to explore everywhere and beat the game it'll take an additional 4 hours, maybe an hour or two more or less depending on how fast you go through everything.

I believe that each area has several levels in it, and each of those levels has a seperate tally for Little Sisters. Levels are separated by those locking doors with big spinning wheels and provoke loading sequences (is anyone else impressed by how little loading you deal with, even though loading segments are very long?) You'll have to hoof it to each section and double-check that way -- the Bathyspheres only take you to different areas and not different levels.

I got the achievement for dealing with every little sister the moment I saved the last little sister in the game, so I can definitely comfirm that you would know if you had found every one.

I don't think it's a software problem though. on my old 360, the demo froze up quite a bit. on my newer one, I experienced 2 glitches in the whole game-- one where the "burnt corpse" texture disappeared off the bodies leaving behind some weird basic textures, and one other right after
Atlas tries to give you heart attack
where the screen filters were messed up for a few seconds.

not a single freeze, not a single frame rate hitch (I was playing with the framerate unlocked.)

Damn. What is the Lot # of your new 360?

I am playing on a LOT #7722 model.

I have a launch 360 (day and date) and I have not had any problems running this game. I believe I am on the last hour or so of the game.

Thanks to everyone who gave me ideas on how to remedy my harvesting problem. I don't feel like going back to every level to check, so I'll just keep a save on the side in case I do sometime.

Only problem I've had was when about 9 splicers were chasing me through a doorway, one of which threw those explosive cocktails, and he accidentally set the whole crowd on fire. Then the frame rate dropped to about 2fps until the crowd was extinguished.

Also, while I'm enjoying the game, there were some things that remind me of Half-Life 2. And they would have been much cooler had I not already experienced them in Half-Life 2. This does not make the game bad, it just makes it better for those who haven't played Half-Life 2 yet.

Overall, I'm enjoying it but can't imagine I'd play through again once I complete it.

Thanks, that makes me feel better, but I still wanted the achievement. Not that big of a problem, as I plan to go through the game at least two more times very, very soon.

Also, I'd like to throw in my 2 cents: easily one of my favorite games of the past five years. If I had to rank it, I'd put it somewhere in my Top 5, and would gladly give it a 10/10. However, that's just an opinion, as is Trakan's & Zewone's apparent dissatisfaction (and I say apparent, because both individuals have a known history of going against the grain just to do so).

People have to come to a realization that an opinion is absolutely worthless and in no way, shape or form represents a games worth. A review by an actual reviewer is a whole other story, however.

Oh, and one last thing. There are parts of GoW that looked better than Bioshock and they're parts of Bioshock that blow GoW out of the water. At the very least, both games are on the same "legendary" level.

hahahahhahahah

Known history of going against the grain? Please give me examples.

Please, I was very much hyped for this game, since I had first heard about it. I was expecting a totally different game, and what I got was something I've done before.

I don't see how my opinion in any way takes away from your enjoyment, so why do you feel in necessary to call me out?

And for the record, Halo 3 looks to blow both Bioshock and GOW out the water, in terms of graphics (not art style).
