BIOSHOCK - Gen. Discussion & Info
yes you can. just dont kill cohen, you need the power to the people thing in his room.
Can you kill him after then? And will it affect any achievements you can possibly get? Out of curiousity is this the part where
after taking the pics he requests, you have the option of killing him immediately or chasing him into his apartment?
I thought that's what I read in an earlier post, anyway.

Just let him live when he comes down the stairs after you've taken all the photos. You won't see him again for awhile. Eventually you'll come to the level with all the apartments (I forget) and you'll see two splicers dancing, then you'll hear Cohen talk. He'll tell you not to disturb them, but of course you do. After you kill the splicers, a secret door opens up (to the left of the kitchen entrance) and Cohen is upstairs. Kill him, take a photo of his corpse, and also use the Power to the People station
Beat the game today...amazing. I have never had this much fun with an FPS type game in years. Felt alot like Condemned.
I thought the same thing

Got my bundle from Frys today and played Bioshock for 2 hours or so.

What a great game, lookes great (both technically and design wise), great sound with music, the voice acting etc. Makes for a great creepy atmosphere.

I think my favorite moment thus far was after hacking a bot, it went in the room and started attacking a bunch of bad guys, and one of them said something to the effect of "Oh goddammit, some body shoot that thing." Classic.

Played a bit past the first boss--the crazy plastic surgeon. Can't wait to get back to it.

Ok, anyone want to tell me what to do? I'm at
The part where Cohen wants you to kill people for him. I killed the first guy who freezes you and took his picture back, but now what do I do? Cohen didn't tell me anything. Am I just supposed to wander around until I find people?

go to options and turn the quest arrow on. there's three more people.

As to the prolific inventer tonic, dont you get these just by saving 3 little sisters? I saved 3 already and already got Hypnotize Big Daddy 1, but then started harveting for the extra adam to make some of the other achievments easier (max out all tracks).

You wouldnt think that harvesting a few little sisters (so long as you still rescue enough to get the tonics in gifts) would ruin the "collect all tonics" achievment. Right?

Is there a list of tonics and how to get them? I know there is a list of WHERE but I was wondering if there is a list of the ones that you get through little sister gifts, research, etc.???

Thanks for the help!

I did some poking around and found that there are (I THINK) three tonics you get as gifts for rescuing little sisters. They are: (1) Prolific Inventor - Gift near Garden of Apollo, (2) Safecracker 1 - In a Gift in Arcadia, and (3) Armored Shell 2. I know you get random plasmids as gifts too (I guess there is a cycle) but do you have to rescue EVERY little sister in the game to get these tonics or can you still harvest some but rescue enough to get the tonic gifts as well? I guess basically I am asking if you get a tonic for saving the VERY LAST little sister, if not, then you should still be able to get the tonic achivment right?

Now that you have your photo, go back to Cohens masterpiece and walk up to the masterpiece. It will then allow you to insert the picture into one of the goldish slots, and you will be prompted to go after more people.

Why not just go through and save them all to leave yourself open for all achievements? Much easier way to do that.

And the rewards more than make up for the difference in harvesting and saving Adam-wise

I agree, however I already beat the game on the first playthrough and got the associated "little sister savior" acheivement. I played through and harvested a couple to get some extra adam and to
see the alternative ending
.

Now I am in Arcadia and its too late to rescue them all without restarting the entire game because I already harvested and saved. So my questions still stand:

(1) Is it possible to harvest 2-3 litle sisters, save the rest, and get the tonic collector achievment.

(2) How many little sisters are there total? Basically what i want to know is if the very last gift you get is a tonic, because if its not (like if its a plasmid or something) I may still be able to rescue enough to get all the tonic gifts.

EDIT: Look at this great list I found:
  1. [*]Neptune's Bounty (1st LS): Hypnotize Big Daddy plasmid; 12 Armor-piercing Pistol Rounds
[*]Arcadia (1st LS): Safecracker tonic; 12 Electric Buck
[*]Fort Frolic (1st LS): Hypnotize Big Daddy 2 plasmid; 4 First Aid Kits
[*]Hephaestus (1st LS): 4 EVE Hypos; 6 Proximity Mines
[*]Olympus Heights (1st LS): Armored Shell 2 tonic; 12 Incendiary Bolts
[*]Apollo Square (2nd LS): Prolific Inventor tonic; 150 Liquid Nitrogen
[*]Point Prometheus (3rd LS): 100 Antipersonnel Rounds; 4 First Aid Kits
    [*]
So judging by this, harvest 3 little sister wont prevent me from getting the tonic achievment since the VERY LAST gift is not a tonic. You get them in order right? SO if I only miss out on one gift, i should still be able to get prolific inventor (even though it will be later and possibly not at apollo square. Do you all reach this same conclusion too?

2nd EDIT: I'm sorry to be such a pain in the ass. Here is a thought I just had. I am in my 2nd playthrough, but I still have a save file titled "fontain" from the last save of my first playthrough where all I did was rescue. Can I backtrack from this save to go and get the missed tonics? I think it was right before the final boss fight, (is it possible to leave this area and go tonic hunting?)

3rd EDIT: Is there a way to tell how many LS's you have saved adn harvested so far?
So did anyone get the coffin for their Big Daddy yet? Or maybe any word from 2k?
Nothing. On Oct-10 2K Elizabeth posted saying that shipping would commence "soon". No idea what they means, or why it's taking so long to at least collect the broken ones. I realize they need to make new ones, but they originally claimed they were going to collect the bad ones then send out an artbook while you waited for the replacement. Now it sounds like they're going to do it all at once.

Just finished the game. I saved all 21 sisters, so got the good ending along with the savior achievement and the one for saving or harvesting all of them.

Great game, a solid 9.5 for me. Great atmosphere, graphics, sound etc. Only minor gripes would be wishing for more variety in enemies and a longer ending.
Really late to the party, but picked Bioshock up today at a 2 for 40 sale (used), with Heavenly Sword. Anyway, can't wait to finally play!
Where did you get that deal?

Just beat the game a second time on hard, this time getting the evil ending. Wow does the ending blow, especially compared to the good ending.
Any coffins out in the wild yet? This shit is starting to get annoying.
Nope. I signed up about a week after I got the game and still nothing. My poor Big Daddy has been sitting in a closet with a broken arm for such a long time. He needs medical attention stat.

I personally did not have that big of a problem with the evil ending, even though i did like the good ending better. I did, however, notice people complainign about the ending(s) on a different bioshock thread.

The narrative was (No real spoilers, but this is stuff you shouldn't read until you've beat the game or at least know the big spoilers already.)
extremely weak. Extremely well told, but most would agree that, if you think about the story, it was just filled with ridiculous assumptions. The evil ending was thus bad because it left you filling somewhat empty. The good ending was just told really, really well and had to leave you feeling good. Ending with a good feeling allows you to forgive Bioshock's many plot excesses.

The good ending just felt cheesy to me. I agree with you otherwise though, I loved the way the game told the story and the atmosphere, but the background of the character you play as is completely ridiculous and far too convoluted.

I didn't think his orgins anymore convoluted or far fetched than the fact he can shoot electricity out of his hands. Spawn bees that attack people on command or make whirlwinds. Wth were you expecting out of a game like this. I mean its a sci fish storyline its not suppose to be hyper realistic. The whole setting is over the top and of a society that destroyed itsself on excess with lack of morality (at least in my mind).

Not to mention the fact the whole game is based on an oxymoron, "Failed Utopia." There's no such thing. A utopia is a perfect society incapable of failure otherwise it isn't or wasn't ever a utopia to begin with.
Any DLC plans for this game?
I doubt it. Doesn't really lend itself to it. They could do an expansion based on the evil ending I suppose...but seems like that would be the idea for a sequel.

So far I think the game is great. Espcially on my superbad surround system that I picked up at Magnolia/BestBuy this summer. The elements, puzzles and baddies are great. The soundtrack is great...overall a great experience. I've only put about five hours into it but I can't wait for tonight. I get to nerd out on the couch with my wife off to work and no one at home!!!

Failed Utopia=dystopia. See e.g. Xanadu, Brave New World, and Rapture.

The word "Utopia" was invented in 1516 by Thomas More to describe a fictional place. It is a play on the Latinization of two Greek words to create a word that could simultaneously be "no place" and "good place". Also the world More set out is not really supposed to be a utopia, or at least not his idea of it, but rather a way to satirize and examine life in England at the time of writing.

Read it in college (not in Latin).
Failed Utopia=dystopia. See e.g. Xanadu, Brave New World, and Rapture.
I wouldn't say they are the same. Did Rapture turn into a dystopia? Sure. I still say if Rapture was a utopia to begin with then it could have never turned into the dystopia it did. If something is fallible then it was never perfect to begin with.

I did, in the CANADA forum ;)
Will be starting this weekend, can't wait!

I too started late into this game, well didn't get an xbox til early September, but put off getting this game until last week. Absolutely amazing, this along with Gears of War are my favorite games on the 360. I'm going through my first time on Hard and trying to get most of the achievements, already messed up on the audio diaries lol from the first Welcome to Rapture level =( but after playing through it on Hard, I'm sure EASY will be cake. Anyone else's weapon of choice happen to be the wrence, lol I love that thing, I have like full ammo on everything else and don't use it unless I fight a BD.

Will it be necessary to research, upgrade etc to run through the game on Easy mode? Or will I have some trouble with the BDs etc later on if I don't do much researching and stuff. I just kind of want to go through and find the audio diaries since I plan to get all the other achievements on my first playthrough on hard as I'm rescuing the sisters now..

If you just got a 360 and are loving going through Bioshock with the wrench, then you MUST pick up Condemned. Still one of my favorites on the system. There is even an achievement for playing the entire game with only melee. It's ultra cheap and even cheaper used. Pick it up ASAP!

meh, I can't see DLC doing anything good for this game... unless he means Multiplayer.

Or maybe a whole new area with its own storyline? A meta-sequel?

Other than that, new plasmids, new weapons, etc would simply not be necessary or desirable in a self-contained game like BioShock.

I didn't do much researching ni my playthrough on normal and had no problems. I mean there's really no penalty for dying since you start back at a vita chamber and enemies keep the same amount of damage they had (assuming they don't use a healing station in the interim).

I did upgrade my weapons and plasmids etc. as much as I could though.

I don't think the genetic modifications were over the top for a sci-fi storyline, however the basic premise of the character you play as makes no sense. People trying for/making genetic modifications I can deal with because the motivation makes sense, but
one of Ryan's enemies creating a clone, sending it out into the world so that it can fly back, hijack and crash a plane nearby and then wander into Rapture and hopefully take out Ryan for him is just dumb.

I'd argue that you lack imagination
First off Ryans genetic material wouldn't have been hard to come by if they had wanted an exact clone he was in strip clubs etc all the time so getting a hold of a fork he used a napkin etc would be simple. Secondly if they had just wanted to make someone look like Ryan thats even easier all they do is apply adam and his face is like puddy they shape it however they want the doctor said as much in his logs. Next about the flight if Atlas could smuggle goods inside Rapture what makes you think he couldn't charter a lone flight. Drug the hero so he doesn't remember anything but his "family" before the crash(this is doable since we already know they can plant memories this should all them to remove them as well). Basically given the technology they have in Rapture its all doable whether or not you think its "lame" or not is another story.

I wasn't arguing wether or not it was feasable, I was arguing that the motivation for going through all those steps to assasinate someone goes against any sort of logic given there is no shortage of guns or powers in Rapture. Seriously, given the extent of influence he had, the amount of guns and powers and the general situation in rapture, you honestly believe that the situation you describe is the best way to take care of the problem?

Besides that there's so many holes in that plan that it's hard to believe a character as smart as we are led to believe Adam is would do that.

Regardless, I liked the story of Rapture, and it's downfall. It's the story of the main protaganist that's disappointing.

I personally don't have a problem with the story. It is a little far fetched but so is the story of a lot of great videogames and movies. What Atlas did to Jack (you're character) is alot like what happned in Manchurian Candidate, Naked Gun, and the soldier movie with Kurt Douglas.

I'm not saying that cloning a human is the same as brainwashing them, but either way I see your point that there are a lot more practical ways to kill somebody, but if Ryan had used them we wouldnt have a videogame to play would we?

What makes you think it was his only plan, or even his best one? If you have the ability to set a sleeper why wouldn't you?

I'm FINALLY about to start playing this... probably tonight assuming I can finish Metroid Prime 3 in an hour or less. After all the great reviews and the awesome demo I can't wait to start playing. Too bad I seem to be a little late to the party!
Too bad I seem to be a little late to the party!
It's never too late to harvest Little Sisters. (I'm still only halfway through the game, if that, after picking this up at release. Ugh.)

I got through the first "level" I guess (I got the achievement). This game is amazing - I was playing in the dark and I was kind of creeped out...
