BIOSHOCK - Gen. Discussion & Info
Im getting this game but i also want a game callled "The Darkness" that's based of a comic book..
The Darkness was good. This is better.

Day one, for me.
Yea sorry to all of us Bioshock fans. I mean without you liking this game it will be less enjoyable to all of us as well
Not at all what i meant man. It was MY opinion. I didn't say that you wouldn't like it. If you took it that way im sorry man.;)

Wow, just wow. I finished the demo 5 minutes ago and good lord was it mind blowing. I'm reminded of the first time I played Half Life 2 which is/was one of my favorite FPS' of all time.

Everything was clicking for me here. The atmosphere is incredible, the graphics are just about the best I've ever seen, the backstory seems very intriguing. This week cannot possibly go fast enough.

If I have one complaint it's that I spent too much time fighting things. There were times when I wanted to stop and look around more but I really couldn't because either something would be blowing up or crazy people would be coming after me.

The madness that seems to have taken hold of the residents of Rapture is especially disturbing yet understandable.

I have not been this blown away by a demo for as long as I can remember. My slight regrets about shelling out for the LE at Gamestop have evaporated.

I find it only fitting that Andrew Ryan's paradise is nothing more than a (Spoilers for those who haven't played the demo, but even then... these aren't game breaking.)
wasteland haven for craven scavengers headed by a paranoid, delusional, egotistical fuck who, three decades after founding Rapture, still believes the CIA and KGB are out to get him.

After playing the demo, I'm glad I pre-ordered it. The game is fun, and I doubt it will get old quick....did you not see all the cool stuff you can do in the trailer after you beat the demo?
The game's not at all shabby, having completed the demo. A worthy successor to System Shock 2, and that should count as the highest praise.

Not so sure about the "THIS... IS... ART!" histrionics though.

And, thankfully, they should be able to touch on the depravity on Randianism or whatever without getting KotOR2-style preachy.
I kinda like the saturated dystopic stuff. The powers you get (I already forget what they are called) are clearly inspired by the Radium craze-- people thought it was a miracle cure for everything, then they all got cancer and went crazy from it. That's one of my favorite "crazy" times in history :) I think I can guess one way the story could go:
if you get too many of those powers, you become a...skinner, is it? I forget the enemies' names too

This game looks great but it's deffiently not my type of game, as usual for me I started playing and around 5-10 minutes in I just got to impatient and turned off my x box.

If you don't even know the name of what you're criticizing, I'm not sure how valid your opinion is. The fact that you chose such a bizarre adjective reinforces that. Of all the valid criticisms of Objectivism there are, you hopped right over them and could only pull out a meaningless emotion-trigger word?

But mostly I enjoy that you fell into the simplistic trap of believing that this game reinforces your own ideology, or really any ideology at all. This quote from Ken Levine (creative director) sums it up:

"I was on the forums; I think it was Slashdot or something that someone pointed me toward. There was one guy saying, "this asshole! This communist asshole! He's taking down objectivism!" There was another saying, "I don't want to play a game that's some sort of Republican screed about free-market bullshit!" I really love the fact that two people can look at the game and take away two totally different opinions on it. The game is not about answering questions and coming up with solutions; it's about asking questions. When you start the game and ride down the bathysphere and you see Ryan's short film asking, "is man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?" that's a hard question to say no to. And, I dig it. But then there's Rapture, and I like that sort of opaqueness in storytelling, because I don't think there are black and whites."

If you're seeing answers in this story, it's because they're the answers you want to see. There are only questions being posed.

its on the top of my gamefly, but according to the recent montly email it is at the top of a lot of peoples lol, and if I don't get it on gamefly soon I will try and go rent it somewhere else.

So how many times have you guys played through the demo? I have played through it 3 times and will play through it a little more I am sure.

RollingSkull's a commie tramp!

j/k, RS. This cat's got his trousers cinched too tight. Nobody ever said Randians :)rofl:) have senses of humor.

IMO, the entire Ryan soliloquy during the bathysphere ride down is a rail against socialist ideology. What does "is man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?" refer to, if not objectivism? Socialism redistributes said sweat; religion demands a portion of it. What in the world conclusion *could* you come to other than viewing Rapture as an Objectivist dystopia?

Moreover, the game overtly states that Ryan's ideological enemies are the CIA, KGB, and religion. It's pretty clear what the gamemakers are referring to. Ryan did not model Rapture after Marx and Engels' philosophies.

Ryan is evidently part Orson Welles, and part Howard Hughes. Me likey.

Can't remember if I downloaded the demo last night or not...I kinda just deleted my 360 without thinking about it before going to bed.

Anyways, for those who have played the demo....just how scary is it? I turn into a little girl with scary games. RE and FEAR? Man, get that shiz away from me. I can play when people watch me play, and I love watching people play those games, but playing by myself? Game over.

Is this what's included with the limited edition? This image was open in my browser and I have no idea how it got there .

If it is, the LE will be mine.

Why would you assume I'm a "Randian"? Why is that people automatically assume that there are only two clearly cut sides two every issues in life? You're either with me or against me.

That's the Gamestop Limited Edition. I don't know if there's any others but I don't believe so.
Has 2k ever given justification for why the 360 version has a $10 premium over the PC version?
Because $60 is what non-budget 360 games cost. That's what MS decided, so publishers have very little choice in the matter.

This is what someone drew up and was hoping would be in the LE. This is an old pic and some of this will not be in the LE ( Cloth Map ) and such.

No steel case or stickers?

NO STICKERS!!!

HELL TO PAY!!!

HELL TO PAY!!!

Crap. That was a neat lookin' set.
Why would you assume I'm a "Randian"?
Because you're overly (and unnecessarily) defensive, and because you have no sense of humor. Like every *ahem* "Objectivist" (happy now?) I've ever met.

Huh. I'm not an Objectivist.

You didn't address anything else I brought up either, but that's okay. You've fit me into your world view where you think I belong and it would be nearly impossible to alter that at this point. We can move on now.

It's likely not 2k's doing. It's because Microsoft, being a silly corporation that has lost over a billion on Xbox so far, has this weird notion about making money on their software and enforcing prices. Those silly kooks....

I'm the same way ;)

Surprisingly, I didn't find it all that scary. The splicers really arn't that bad, they're just really insane. However, the atmoshpere was....spooky.

What a bunch of Scared ass bitches up in this thread ;)

Seriously though my nephew is the same way as you guys. He stopped playing when the door to the sub opened. He's 9 though so it's understandable :D

Ever since I tried playing RE2 by myself when I was like 10...man. Not only was I scared shitless at that age, I also didn't have a memory card yet because my brother and I JUST got the PSX. So I had a complete fear of death because I couldn't save!

Seriously it's because of that game that I have a more-than-normal fear of zombies. Like no really. That game fucked with me lol. I can't touch any of the RE games. Other zombie games I can handle, but survival horror games with zombies are definitely not happening for me.

Whenever I walk around my house at night and the blinds or door drapes aren't closed, I just imagine a zombie running up and banging up on the glass. I'm weird I know.
What a bunch of scared ass bitches up in this thread ;)
Yeah that's definitely me ;)

I just started Silent Hill 2, and I don't know if I'm even going to be able to finish it.

GAAH! I do that too! I always have to shut all the shades

Anyone else getting fucked up download speeds?

It took 3 hrs to get the first 20%... 2 hrs later I had 23%... 1 hr later I had 14%. Fearing a corrupted download I deleted it and started again. 4 hrs after THAT I've got 2%.

Hopefully it'll be done when I get off work tomorrow. Heck, that's only 19 hours away.

I feel alone in the, "Not really feeling this game" group.

I thought the demo was alright. I was never to fond of this game and the demo was actually a little worse then I expected. I was actually looking forward to the demo ending... *sorry*

The game to me, is hard to describe... it reminds me of the old resident evil games where they would have prerendered backgrounds and sort of out of place/ugly enemies/everything that was usable.

The enemies moved awkwardly and felt out of place... and the combat was really boring. And I hate shooting at things with a health bar. And nothing felt like it had wait to it.

The graphics and atmosphere (When there were no enemies around) were awesome. When ever there are enemies around though, it turns unappealing to me. . . I would prefer this game to just be a walk through this underwater city solving puzzles and crap.

The start of the game up till the point where you meet the first enemy was awesome. Kind of lost interest after that. I basically enjoyed the non fighting portions is what I am saying.

Like all of your other opinions, I'm having a hard time taking this one seriously, as you constantly, and consistently, try to set yourself aside from the masses.

'I feel alone in the, "Not really feeling this game" group.'

If you posted, saying that the sky was blue, I'd begin to doubt that, too.

well, I think I've covered every last inch...haven't found lots of cool easter eggs other then the fact that you can get drunk if you drink 2 or more bottles of alcohol in a row.

There's only one part I haven't been able to check because the action moves so fast-- it's right at the end, past the first security camera, you see 2 splicers checking out a big daddy corpse. next time I play, I want to see if you can search it...

Uh, dude? I don't look for answers OR questions in video games (If you take life lessons from video games, you have more problems than I do.). Please, come off the intellectual masturbation about how you are the lone enlightened who doesn't see things in black or white. You clearly take this WAY more seriously than I do.

EDIT: Frankly, I kinda wish the Bioshock creators would get over themselves as well. Video games are, if history is any indication, a uniformly crappy medium for philosophical treatises. If they really succeeded at it, they don't need to keep buttering us up with so much prose that reeks more of self-reassurance than actual boasting. The product will speak for itself. If all you're doing is "asking questions," you're already taking a wishy-washy stance, so I'm not particularly interested in what you have to say beyond letting me judge precisely how well you asked said questions.

And, "Is man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?" doesn't lead directly to gibbering zombies and lots of explosions. So the narrative arc we have is nothing but fragments, so I don't see how anyone can judge greatness or vapidity at this point.

However, given the evidence stated above, I'm leaning towards vapidity. I imagine the game will be a blast, but vapid.

Yeah you get a munch of money, and I think maybe some arm injecty stuff. I can't remember what it's called, if that's even what he had.

I downloaded this game wee hours earlier this morning and download was fast. After playing this demo I was sold I went to eb and got the LE of the game. Like the atmosphere, interaction, and controls. Cant wait for it to come out now.
