BIOSHOCK - Gen. Discussion & Info
Okay, I went back through all of the audio logs, but STILL need to know
Why did I collect Roses for that lady? Why did I even meet her - who the hell is she? And now why do I have to go on a fetchquest for a bunch of items to make something to revive the plants? Who cares? What's the point? Does this have any relevance to the game, at all?

Don't read if you haven't gotten fairly far in Arcadia!
Did you miss the whole think about how the trees
supply all of Rapture with O2? The ingredients you're getting right now (the rose is one of them) are to create the Lazarus Vector, which will revive them all.

Unrelated (and big spoiler):
I've reached the point where
Atlas has only just recently betrayed me (he activated Code Yellow a little while back).
How much more do I have?

You got about 25% left.

Am I the only guy going through the game on Hard for the best challenge? Just out of curiousity, I find it much more entertaining and definately pumps up the OH SHIT feeling of the game.
Is it just me or is the game's default electro plasmid/wrench "1-2-punch" combo a little too powerful? I just reached Fort Frolic and I feel like I'm not taking enough advantage of the designer's creativity with all the other nifty plasmids. I mean I'll occasionally use the pyro one if there's oil in the area, and telekinesis is great for acquiring hard to reach items, but beyond that I don't feel like the other ones are that useful except in really specific circumstances. I was curious if others felt that way, or is there a whole world of splicer slaying that I'm missing out on?
That was one of gamespots complaints about the game. It's true that if you want to be most efficient about killing and doing damage, you can do it with only the one two punch combo and the first two plasmids you get. But you won't have much fun with the game.

Yes, but I want to have fun and be efficient at the same time. I mean it's hard to convince myself to use other plasmids when I know I can take less damage with my electro/wrench combo.

Though I did look up some developer walkthroughs on gametrailers.com and there is all sorts of shit I'd like to try on there. Especially when fighting Big Daddies since you can take all the time you need to set up deathtraps before engaging in combat. This is just a game that keeps on giving like that.

I'd say throwing bodies with telek is way more powerful and efficient. It barely uses any power and kills most enemies (besides big daddies) in one hit.

Whoa, just got to the part (end of Haphaestus) where
You finally kill Andrew Ryan and Fontaine betrays you. That was a very sweet part in the game and I'm really really enjoying the storyline.

It's interesting that such a simple phrase that we just brushed off after hearing it 500000 times was so powerful.

I was looking at Shipwreck's profile, which said he was playing bioshock, to only see this detail in the progression bubble:
biowha.jpg

can someone explain this?

Really?! So if news comes out about bioshock adding new content or that the disk could explode my 360, it has to be in the bioshock thread? I guess you're right. After all, that whole widescreen issue was just in the bioshock thread and not its own thing...

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149515

Sorry for acting like an ass but I'm getting tired of these "it must be disscussed in the ____ thread." Can't indivisual topics be posted if the topic isn't about the gameplay?

btw thanks for answering my question.

If you haven't finished the game, don't read.
I told myself I wouldn't check the Achievements list until after I beat the game the first time through, but then I caved. fuck, did that ruin my night.

All things about Bioshock should be discussed in the Bioshcok thread. That gets rid of multiple topics about the same game. The thread is not only about the gameplay of Bioshock.

They can, but then things would be really cluttered. We try to keep everything related to one title on one thread. Sometimes threads go out of topic within the same game and next thing you know we have 5 threads on the same game discussing the same thing.

Yup, just beat it tonight myself. Took about 12 hours. Contemplating whether I should try to hard difficulty because I feel like I can actually get the 1000 achievement points. Researching is a pain in the butt though.

Played through half the medical pavilion on hard. I switched back because it got too annoying. Hard only seems to make you take more damage and enemies less.

Just finished this part, I love this game, and yes you are right!

Everyone says that hard is too hard but that is not what I found. In fact I think hard is fairly easy and can only be annoying in certain parts.

How was hard "fairly easy"?
Eh, I'm partial to freezing enemies and then shattering them with a shotgun blast.
As cool as that is, you unfortunately don't get any money or loot off the body if you kill them that way, which is why I didn't use it all that much. Only a little ammo if they are holding a gun.

Big Daddies are pissing me off.

I got a pop-up saying I need to resuce one more Little Sister in Neptune's Bounty. So I go up to the room with a vending machine and an explosive-shooting drone and whatnot, find a Big Daddy with a Little Sister. Spend forever killing him, and...no Little Sister when I'm done. Then the Big Daddy who I had hynotized to finish him off goes over to a hole and calls one out.

Bitch, I'm going to rip you open and take your Adam.

“People have had some broken Big Daddies. We’ve dealt with that. People are upset about the soundtrack; we’re going to make the soundtrack available for free.“ Levine says he doesn’t know the exact specifics of this new soundtrack, but that it will feature music from the game and be available gratis.

So apparently they are releasing the soundtrack for free as well? Color me impressed.

Can someone please direct me to the first weapon upgrade in Arcadia? I have been searching for an hour now and can't it. Apparently it's beside a big Farmer's Market sign, and from what I can see there are two of those. One with a Tree Farm sign right under it and one with a Tree Farm sign beside it, yet I still can't find the damn thing.

EDIT: Nvm found it.

Any difficulty level is easy when you functionally never die.

This is why I should stop buying "LEs" and "CE's. Either the publishers just put the "exclusive" crap up for download for free at launch, or just a few days afterwards :\

Then again this Big Daddy is looking damn nice in my office (until I decide to break it).

This isn't what's in the LE. This is what people think should have been in the LE.

I was in love with the demo, and have been playing it for hours today since my free rental only lasts for 5 days, and this has been my only free day recently. I'm sick of Bioshock now, probably because of just playing it too much. I have until tuesday with it, but I don't think that I'll have the need to finish the game.

I need cutscenes in my games to advance the story. The whole diary messages seem so pointless to me. None of them have been saying anything useful from what I've played so far. Is the story not supposed to open up until really deep into the game? It's been pretty weak so far.

Anybody else get sick of this game after playing it for hours and hours? Maybe I just need to have a break from it.

I'm a bigger fan of cutscenes too. They provide nice breaks from the gameplay, and with visuals, they really help to flesh out the story and give you some visual aids. But yeah, the recordings seem ho-hum to me. Many of them don't really open up the central story, but they do add to the fiction of what happened in Rapture. But again, doesn't add much to the central story.

Jeff Gerstmann's video review said it best I think, he called it a piece of interactive fiction with mystery elements.

According to your achievements, you're maybe a quarter of the way through the game. Give it time.

Are there more pop-out moments in the game? It's really those moments that put the dread in me to play the game.

I've been watching my friend play his copy and he's only come across a couple so far, but if there's not so much of those like the old RE games, I feel like he'd waste less time creeping by slowly, peaking around every corner.

I hate cutscenes. They jerk you out of the interactive experience into movie mode. They make the story and the game separate things. A good game tells the story without taking you out of it.

I'm not even that far into it (just got the camera and completed that task) and there is a lot of stuff happening with the audio clips. They're building a picture of Rapture and the events just before the collapse. I'm worried I missed one in the wharf actually, it was under a grate and I couldn't find a way to get to it despite trying forever.

very cool of 2k to have the soundtrack available to download for free...even though it should have been in the set...they seem to be coming through in pleasing everybody that is into the game

Everyday I go downstairs to make lunch and everyday I stare at the yellow Best Buy bag mocking me as it sits on the kitchen table “hiding” my birthday present from me. Nine more days to go.

there are plenty of pop out moments...a lot of them aren't even scripted. Splicers sneak up on you all the time.

The diaries start out kind of random, but they come together. I'm a little over half way through and each diary advances the story nicely.

I think they're a great solution for telling the story without interrupting the game. reminds of me Metroid Prime. cutscenes usually seem very hackneyed in video games. after all, programmers are good at making games, not movies. not to mention the resources that go into making special animations for those scene, which take away from the game.

Well that's no good at all..

Wow, just got my amazon order. This game is awesome. I'm also surprised at how scary it can be. IMO this is way scarier than condemned which was creepy but didn't have a lot of "surprises." Scariest moment for me:
In the medical place (where the atmosphere is really creepy) you pick up some hacking tonic then the mist comes down. When you turn around there is a splicer right up in your face just standing there. Took me a while to recover from that.
Can't wait to play more.
Just got to Fort Frolic. ....anyone know about what percent complete I am at?
About half done. Maybe a little more.

I just rented this game after my son goes to bed, I will be all weekend. I guess no Doom or Bomberman for me this weekend.
