Ugh. Really? They are a huge pain in the ass to kill. Both of the ones I killed were caled "Rosie" and were in the same area so maybe it was a respawn...
The Hypnotize plasmid (or whatever that one is called that has the Big Daddy protecting you) works wonders for me trying to take out Big Daddies. Just get one to follow you around until you find another one and let the two fight it out.
I was lucky to get this one scenario where I had both Big Daddies each with a Little Sister fighting each other. The Big Daddy protecting me killed the other one and after he got his senses back to get back to his Little Sister, I promptly was able to kill him with one shot.
I played for a while last night. I think I'm getting better at it... but not really. I found the camera and I took the first three pictures. I really really like this game. How do you tell how many little sisters are left in a level? Also, can I go back to old areas to get stuff I missed - there was an ice wall in the medical pavillion I couldn't get through because I didn't have the incinerate plasmid on me at the time...

1. Pause the game. At the bottom of the pause menu will be little circles representing the Little Sisters in the level; the picture for each will change whether you saved, harvested, or haven't found each.

Whenever you save/harvest a Little Sister, it'll tell you X/X Gatherers found.
To the best of my knowledge, you can go back. It's almost necessary if you're trying to get all of the diaries (crap, there's a ton).
Melt EVERYTHING in the medical pavilion. There's lots of items to pick up.
I'm moving through the Arcadia level, and so far, this game has lived up to the hype. There's so much to see and do, and the use of plasmids opens this game up tenfold. Ammo is almost an afterthought, as with the telekinesis plasmid, anything can be ammo. The hacking minigame is sort of a letdown, but at least it's not required.
Any word yet on the credibility of the rumor that there is a new achievment for beating the game on hard without ever respawning ina vita chamber.
Jav: Take my advice, TAKE PICTURES OF EVERYTHING!!! Thugish splicers, nitro s; Little sisters, turrets, bots, both types of big daddies, and especially a certian boss's dead body.
This will pay huge dividends later in the game with bonuses, plasmids, tonics etc. Do it alot at first (In Neptune's bounty and arcadia) and you won't have to mess with it later as everything will get fully reasearched.
As to the BD/LS question. Basically there are a finite number of Little sisters, and an infinite amount of BD's, as in the BD's will continually respawn and walk along a set route, knocking on vents to try and draw out little sisters. On the pause screen you can check the status of teh all the LS in your current level (if they are shown next to a BD, you havent dealt with them yet).
So some would say don't mess with a BD until you see them with a LS, otherwise your only booty will be the cash, no ADAM.
As an off topic tip: Be cognizant of having the electroshock plasmid on when you have a BD hypnotized, if you get hit adn zap the BD, you may have a bigger brawl on your hands than you were anticipating.
As to methods of taking down BDs, you can get a little BD on BD axn going on with the hyp. BD plasmid, or use turrets and bots to take him down by luring him in front of them (my fav. method). THey get MUCH easier later in the game.

Thanks for the tips! Can I go back and take pics of dead bosses? I killed Peaches but forgot to take a picture of him.
I'm in Arcadia now - holy crap this game is awesome. So pretty.... I think I'm also past the point where things are scaring me - occasionally someone will pop out and I'll jump but for the most part when I enter a room I expect splicers. I upgraded my shotgun and now I've started to pick up things like kerosene and glue for inventing I guess but I haven't reached that point yet. This game is so great.
Don't worry about snapping pics of bosses until you're past arcadia.
Also if the Houdini Splicer's are giving you trouple. Snap pics pics pics, and you'll eventually find they're easier, thats all I'll say.
The scarriest part for me was the Med Pavillion because later in the game you become more powerful and feel more confident. It has been awhile since my first playthrough but the Med Pavillion and some of the later levels were the scarriest for me.
When do you get the camera in this game? Right now I'm trying to kill the Big Daddy so I can save the freaking little sister. Armour piercing bullets are a nice touch, is there anyway you can avoid his drill attack? Its madness.
Also, do you need to kill the BD before you can get to the Little Sister?
The BioShock figurine replacement program is nearing completion after some delays due to production of the replacement figurines. We appreciate your patience and in order to speed things up, 2K Games is eliminating the step in which you are required to return the broken figurine (we've figured you've waited long enough!).
In the next two weeks, we will begin shipping out a single package containing both the replacement figurine and the art book to customers who enrolled in the program by November 12th. There will be no return box or need to return the broken figurine to our attention.
Thanks for your support and interest in BioShock, and for your patience during the replacement figurine program.
I thought I read somewhere that there were 21 total but I'm not sure. I'm also in Arcadia - right at the beginning. I think I need to spend some ADAM - I'm so stingy. I've got like 300+ of it but I don't know what to buy...

I really need to finish this game, I'm on the last part, but I have just been putting it off. And with Mass Effect getting here tommorrow I probably won't finish it till the end of the month or even next month.

Save it and wait till you get enough for some slots. They are the first things you should buy IMHO, it helps out alot being able to have more tonics/plasmids.

I bought one extra slot so far - I've got 3 plasmids equipped (electrocute, telekinesis and incinerate). I've only got the standard two slots for the other tonics though.
I really like the achievements too - I feel like I have a realistic shot at getting most of them for once.
Summary of gaming today:
1st day played of Bioshock ever!
Time: 7HRS, 52MIN (yay Liveeye!)
Location: Sander Cohen's place (Atrium).
Little Sisters: 8 of 8 saved (so far)
I LOVE this game. This breaks for the longest gaming session of 1 game I've ever had (possibly beaten by Blue Dragon, but I don't think so).
Can't wait to play more (probably finish it this weekend).

I'm about 3/4 of the way through Arcadia now. The Houdini Splicers are a pain in the ass (and creepy). I'm getting the hang of things a little more since the last Big Daddy I killed only killed me once. I saved right in front of the final Little Sister on this level - I'm going to save her tonight. I also got another 200 ADAM as a gift and bought some stuff. The plasmid where the Big Daddy protects you is pretty good. Is there a wallet upgrade? I'm guessing there definitely is because I can only carry around $500 but the counter looks like it goes up to $9,999. It is a lot easier when you can buy EVE, First Aid Kits and ammo without worrying about going broke. Oh yeah, I also invented a few things... it's not done how I thought it was going to be. I thought I'd actually get to combine random shit and make something completely unique.
Is there a way to tell how much research I've done and what I'm missing as well as which things I haven't invented yet (now that's counterintuitive) because I want to be sure I'm headed in the right direction for the achievements... I can't wait to play again tonight...

- No wallet upgrade. It's not really a problem, you get to a point in the game where you always have a full wallet if you search enough.
- Research: Every time you take a pic of something, it tells you how much you've done on that thing. Tip: You can take pics of little sisters, security cameras, bots, etc... and different big daddy types count as different research items. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE the power of research! : )
QFT as to the above post. It is easy to go through the game and really just completely forget about the camera.
Jav, here is a couple of tips if you're concerned about achievments:
1. Beware beware beware, of areas that you cannot return to. THere are THREE: (1) Welcome to rapture, (2) Rapture Control Room, (3) The smuggler's hideout. Be absolutely sure to get every diary in these areas (no tonics i dont think) becasue you cannot return here.
2. Photograph photograph photograph. Not only does this affect the individual photog. achs, but it also affects the Tonic Collector acheivment. Don't forget bots, turrets, everykind of splicer, both types of BDs, and LS. I seriously mean this when I say snap away, zap em then take 4-5 pics of every enemy RAPID FIRE, before you know it you'll be halfway through the game and have all the research done. THere are some tonics that help you get you a higher % of research completed with each pic, EQUIP THESE ASAP!!! TIP: (minor)
Equiping natural camoflauge really helps when security cameras go off, just hold still and snap away.
Obviously keep in mind the bonuses for getting mulitple subjects and action shots.
3. Invent Invent Invent (even if you can't carry everything). There is an ach. for inventing 100 items so when you can, do it, even if you have to leave weapons laying there (you can come back and pick them up too). The inventing is kind of weak, i too though you were going to be able to actually INVENT, instead of combine. They should call it a U-Combine instead of a U-Invent machine.
4. Be wary of spending your adam at the gatherers garden. Here is the order (if you're going for max achs, and if you want to make the game easeir for yourself) of upgrading:
First: Max out all your slots! You'll need to get this done for the ach.
Second: Buy every tonic! You'll need to get this done for the ach.
Third: Patience pays, if you can hold off on gettign that newer, more powerful plasmid, you'll save a lot of Adam for getting it later. They go down in price.
Fourth: Be careful of the eve and health upgrades, they zap your adam and don't go towards any achs. I think at the end of my 1000/1000 run through I upgraded health and eve capacity twice each.
5. Last but not least: BE THOROUGH, not only does the magesty and beauty of this game demand it, but it will make you richer, healthier, and save you some backtracking. Also when you're about to leave a level, smash the health machines for medkits.
Ign has a great walkthrough by nimerjim and FAQ's to help you find straggling diaries tonic etc.

That it is. I hardly took pics at all during my playthrough. But still found the game fairly easy (on normal anyway) and don't give rat's ass about achievements, so no skin off my nose I guess.

No it isn't required but it does help with some things. Photog equipment (turrets, cameras, etc) enough and they become hackable with one button. No more mini-game to play through.
Yeah it pays huge dividends, Houdini splicers become more visible, turrets become one touch hackable, you get tonics and other cool stuff in addition to the damage bonus.
im near the end, probably a few hours left till i beat the game. i still need to finish research on nitro splicers as well as the rosie big daddies. and an easy way to take pics of enemies is to use winter blast or eletroshock on them.

I just bought the game. Can you give me some beginners tips on what exactly everything is? I just beat rapture but it looks like I have to start over since I missed stuff. Thanks man.
The nitro splicers and big daddy were the last research acheivements I got as well. I mean it when I say just snap 4-5 pictures of everything as soon as you get the camera to just get it overwith. Buy film if you have to but even snapping this much I dont remember having to buy much film, its only 12 bucks anyway so it's dirt cheap.
TO a beginner I would just say to remember that you really dont have to fight a big daddy until you want to, this is something I didnt catch on to until later in teh game b/c i woudl just start laying into them as soon as I saw the first few.
Follow my tips before, esp about being thorough, buying slots first. Combat is easy, zap and shoot then repeat. It gets easier as you improve and get more abilities. I thought the enemy AI was some of the best I've ever seen, I never before have seen enemies use healing stations. As to fighting BD's, use bots to help you, lure them into the line of fire of hacked turrets and RPG's or cameras. Get a posse with you and the BD focuses on the bots, not you.
Also don't just run around at full speed constantly or you may find yourself gettin mowed down by security bots alot b/c you get caught on camea. This is important as well: HACK EVERYTHING!
ELECTROSHOCK AND TELEKINESIS ARE YOUR FREINDS! Don't ever trade these plasmids out.
My advice to anyone going for 1000/1000 ach pts would be to rescue every LS, and be careful about the three areas i mentioned that you can't go back to. Other than that use nimerjim's FAQ's on IGN w/ his walkthrough to find stuff you missed before you leave each level. Withh about 118 diaries you WILL miss some. YOu have to check your inventory and count up how many diaries you have and cross check them with a list of each diary in an area. This can be kind of a pain as there are about 10-18 in each area. One of them in particular I remember was not even listed in teh correct area, this was a big pain for me at the time but I found that I had already gotten it, the diary entry just happend to be listed under the wrong area. Oh and this is important, when you get to fort frolic
DONT KILL SANDER COHEN, only kill him once you get to his pad in olympia heights. IF you do you will ruin 2 achievments (Tonic Collector and A secret one about acessing is apt.

about fort frolic, i did exactly that on a whim, but i saved right before. i then went online to see if i screwed up anything by doing that and sure enough, i did. lost about an hour of play so it wasn't a big deal.
and when fighting big daddy's i find the electric bucks to work fantastic against them. you'll have to get them a dozen or so times, but if you keep a good enough decent from their charging, you wont get killed.
and another tip for beginners, if you're a fan of winter blast, i know i am, use them against cameras and turrets to slow down the liquid even more. they work good on enemies too, but it prevents you from looting their corpse, which is why electroshock is the better alternatives for splicers.
Yeah, for the big daddies electric buck is great early on, later on grenades are great.
Best is Electric gel in the chemical launcher. If you have enough ammo, you can totally kill them with them not even getting a chance to hit you (well, think you have to reload once so they have one chance to get you).
So do I have to get an "A" rating for the pictures? I keep getting Bs and Cs... I just want to be sure I'm researching properly...
just keep taking them till it tells you the research is complete...if the pictures registers then its high enough to fill the bar a little and if you have any of the tonics giving you more value for your pics i suggest you use them
The A Rating is obviously higher then the others but its not necessary
is this game beatable in a typical blockbuster rental?
It really depends on how much you want to explore. In my opinion I think you should take your time with it, and rent it again a second week if you dont finish it. This isn't a game you would want to rush and finish ASAP.

Later on I came to love setting up a couple of trip wires with the crossbow, then dropping about 3 proximity mines on the floor. I don't think they ever made it through it and if they did it was only 1 shot from the electric buck to bring 'em down.
I'm at a giant beehive and everytime I go in there stupid splicers keep coming. It's annoying because I'm used to exploring in peace after I wipe out a room.

You do know about the smoke machine right? Just before you get into the area with the beehive, go to the smoke thing and press A. You hear a ticking noise and it gets faster and faster, when it stops the bees come out. Just keep turning it on and you'll be fine.
And if you knew about it, yes, that part is obnoxious.

i just picked up this game for the PC. I must say WOW. I am running it on a 6800 gt single core processor with some toning down of the graphics and it still looks good and the frame rate is still playable. Wearing headphones, hearing those voices and sounds, defenality makes my heart beat faster. Wasn't expecting scary. o.o I am already in the medical pavillion.
