Blockbuster may go bankrupt

theye been in danger for a couple years now, their stock is dismal, and i recently read they are looking to sell gamerush or just dump it

It wouldn't surprise me. With DVDs being pretty affordable why waste money renting? The Blockbuster near me has had slow business for a long time now.

Anecdotally, I can see this with myself, I rarely rent anymore. It just isn't worth it anymore with dvd prices as low as they are. If you get in on the right deals most dvds can be had for around $7 except for the super deluxe versions and often times even those. I average around $6 for any movie from Columbia House. why would I pay $3 or more to buy rent when I can buy it for twice that. I don't really have the time to watch $15 worth of rentals a month so that is out too. The same logic works with games. If I can buy for $10, why rent for $6.

exactly, back in the days of VHS there were certain movies that you couldnt buy, the industry just wasnt as big for home use. now every movie and their crappy sequels are on dvd, and usualy for under 20 bucks

isn't gamerush their most profitable store? IF so, I hope they drop blockbusters and just keep gamerushs. I will miss their great deals.

....Give them to me.

The only way Blockbuster will survive is if they do something that they don't have the balls to do....

Rent Adult DVDs.

We have video rental stores locally that have better business for that reason alone. Almost every regional chain here does it. There is no video genre more suitable for a rental than adult material.

If they were to get rid of Gamerush that would be one hell of a clearance sale. But you had to see it coming with the fact that Hollywood Video was up on the sale block and that most people like to stay at home and just spend the few extra bucks to own movies. Also, with Gamerush how did you think it would survive when they give like 20 bucks in trade-in credit for games that sell at 20 bucks new. It's sad to see Blockbuster go this way but they did it to themselves.

Buy a 360 and eBay it.
I just read that Blockbuster's really taking a pounding from not having late fees, and places like NetFlix, and Wal-mart. That they may file for bankruptcy soon. :whistle2:o http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117932641?categoryid=18&cs=1
Don't forget pay-per-view movies on digital cable...just push a button, and viola...a movie starts playing. I know some people that use that exclusively for movie rentals, never setting foot in a store.

Personally, I wouldn't miss Blockbuster.

I'd rent games more often, but they charge almost $9 after tax for one. "No late fees!" Who gives a shit? What kind of jackass can't return a movie on time? I can understand not being able to run it back the very night, or even the next day, but do you really need a month to return it? Are you 50 miles from your nearest Blockbuster? Bring back due dates and let me keep that extra 4 bucks and maybe I wouldn't use an online service (stupid slow shipping).

are any of your blockbusters closing earlier than they are supposed to? I decided to drop by Blockbuster around 1130 after i was done with my work to rent battlefront II and it was closed at 11. I checked the schedule opening and closings and they were all pushed back an hour from their original times? has this happend to you guys also? If so then maybe that could be a tall tell sign of them losing alot of money..

I had a feeling this was going to happen. They've had some trade-in deals in the last year or so that they had to get killed on. Not to mention their no late fee strategy and a number of other bad marketing decisions.

I've been doing all my renting from the redbox at McDonald's...you can't beat a $1 a night, and they always seem to have the new releases in. Now if they would just get some games in that damn machine I'd really be happy!!!

When I use to work a Blockbuster fo a high school half-day program, there use to be a stripper that came in every saturday nite right before close, to rent a movie and flash us.

While I'd hate to see it die out (c'mon, it's been around so long), it's been on it's last legs for a while. Maybe we can at least look forward to some really good sales.

They don't do this anymore? One of the ones I used to go to back when I lived in Fort Wayne had an Adult room, I was never old enough to go in it, but it was def. there...

Filing for bankrupcy doesn't necessarily mean they're going to go out of business--it's primarily a means of shielding the company from it's creditors. Looks like they're doing business as usual for now.

Too bad I don't have anything to trade at the moment--it'd be nice to have gotten more pre-orders for $29.99...

Its only because of dvds that they lasted so long. Now with dvds so cheap and there are so many other options to rent movies. Now there is hardly any reason to go to a video store anymore.

Maybe if they didn't sell movies for so much, brand new and had fat sales people would have a reason to go in there, even if it's not to rent. My city is so small we don't even have a Blockbuster so I won't miss them, but I woudn't go there anyway except to see their $2 PS1 sale they've got going on in some stores.

Something about Blockbuster gets under my skin but it's hard to put my finger on...

They're WAY higher priced on anything "new" that you would want to buy there.
Renting a DVD for almost $5 just seems like being ripped off
And having credit "collectors" harass you over $2 in late fees.

There's a lot of good about BB, but they just keep taking little shots at you a little bit at a time until you're too frustrated to appreciate all the good. I don't want to cheer a potential BB demise because I really like having such easy access to newest DVD's, not to mention GameRush, but at the same time I can't help but feel a touch of vindication for all this crap they think they can bully their customers into taking.

blockbuster is a big rip-off when it comes to renting dvds. fortunately there's an independent store in my town that rents dvds for 89 cents/night and you can rent whole seasons of shows for $5/week. really awesome compared to BB.

Wow, i can see the sale now " buy 1 madden 2002 get 2 free". lol. Bad management will ruin any business eventually. Around northeast ohio family video is popping up everywhere.
Movie Gallery is going to end up ruling the world
That's where I rent my games, since Blockbuster insists on having access to your credit card for membership. To me that sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Only thing I get there are used games, since they have that 25% off sale.
Hmm.. Makes me wonder if I should try to get all the good ones I can afford before something happens to 'em. :D

Perhaps a sign of its eminant closing is a bustling blockbuster near me on Long Island closed just recently. In fact my gf had a movie rented from them, and they closed in nearly a week after she rented it, without warning.

On a side note, while someone mentioned that bankruptcy is a function of shielding crediotrs away from buisness, Congress recently changed the rules of bankruptcy so that a business cannot operate normally while in the red. This especially effects the airline companies, American etc, who would abuse bankruptcy laws to skirt taxes, move back to black, and when fuel prices or labor would increase, claim bankruptcy again in order to shift the company back to black.

Not necessarily. One local video store called Video Time had one. It was to the right of the cash registers at the very back of the store. With ol' western style "Saloon" doors. It was in such a position that anyone looking at games or movies could see/hear someone going into that room. Maybe that's why I only ventured in there once after turning 18. Many, many years ago.
Well, a year, or so. They never seemed to have any new releases on games. You only went there if you wanted to rent stuff from the previous year, or earlier. Then, they had massive sales, and went out of business.
I've since found Movie Gallery for my game rentals. :D

fuck BB! $4 to rent a movie and $7 to rent a damn game. Also they have sent me to a collection agency for a $2 late charge.

My local GR-eqipped BB has cut back its closing time to 10pm, except Fri/Sat, when they are still open till midnight. I'm in there all the time for game trading/preorders, and it always surprises me how many people rent movies and games, considering that I've rented about 3 movies in the last 2 years and have never rented a game in my life. Seems like a brisk business to me at that store anyway. Plus they claim their game sales/preorders are doing very well (better than the rental side even). Of course, a business can go bankrupt even with high sales...

The no late fees thing was a dumb idea. Now none of the new releases are in stock and the ones that are in stock are showing on pay per view. For me, there is no need to go there.

I've hated BBV for a very long time now. I used to rent from them, but never really liked them. I remember in the 90's I'd try to rent a game and they'd be out of it, or never get in stock, or simply just not have it. Also, the employees were just the worst. They were always nagging and were never helpful. Man I hate that store a ton. That's why I started renting from HWV and using their $15 a month rent 3 dvds at a time deal. It's right next to my house so I'm there like almost every other day/few days. I think I'm part of the reason they stopped that program (though let everyone that was on it to either stay on it and continue, or do something else) because they said that they were losing too much money on it. HWV's game rentals aren't too bad either since I get them all free thanks to the Bugles coupons or when I have to pay it is only $5 so it's not too bad.
It is because they spend so much time trolling these boards and firing all their good employees
Could someone elaborate on what he means by BBV trolling the boards.

Agreed, at first I was like cool, now I won't get hit with any late fees. Then I realized that there was no incentive to return before 2 weeks so nothing was ever going to be in stock.

No late fees hurts them, they never have any games, they are only good to buy games from thats about it...

Once the EB/Gamestop is 100%, Blockbuster should be left in the dust...

Whoever made the no more late fees decision is a ****ing moron, thats one of the poorest marketing decisions I have ever seen, and it really irritates me to know somebody could allow this lame decision...

They should change the "no more late fees idea" back before its too late...

They charge like $6 a movie to rent, your better off just buying the DVD, over pricing BS.

Lower new release movies to $3, and lower games to $5.50, drop the "no more late fees." Make it so if a movie/game is 3 days late you get charged full price.

I see better business revenue, in my whole 1 minute of thinking about it lol...
I haven't rented a movie in years. I either buy the movies I want or get them from the library.
I just go to the site and reserve a few weeks before release and get what i want, best way to save rental money.

As a former BBV employee, good riddance! Horrible company to work for. They screwed me out of two weeks vaction pay. Netflix is the only way for me now.

I'd love to see them try to bring back late fees. That would be the nail in the coffin.
