Blu-ray Discussion Thread - The One and Only

I need guidance from my fellow CAG's who are wise in the way of Blu.

Just finally popped off and got my HDTV (Samsung 46") and Blu-Ray (Panasonic DMP-BD60) ordered on Amazon. Went to Best Buy to buy some Blu's since I found better deals and warranties on Amazon. Figured I could turn the gift card from Xmas into a good surge protector and movies. I was quite saddened to see how badly BB failed with their prices. Amazon beat them by 25-50% on most of the movies!

While it's impossible to predict the prices in the coming weeks and months, what is the good low water mark I could find some of these movies for? I figure (and sorta remember) many of them being lower and I'm trying to decide how long to hold out. The cheap-ass side of me is balking at their upped prices, especially including tax. And should I hold out on any of these movies due to a poor Blu-ray transfer?

The Usual Suspects, Memento, The Dark Knight, Fight Club, Star Trek, Sin City, Iron Man.
Those movies have a bad transfer?
That's what I'm inquiring about. The Usual Suspects and Memento blu's looked pretty bare bones and I was wondering to the quality of the transfer of any of them.

I can personally vouch for TDK, Sin City, Star Trek, and Iron Man since I own those.

Off the top of my head, I believe the other titles got pretty good reviews too, though as you mention, some of them don't have much over the DVD beyond the 1080p upgrade.

I'd also vouch for Fight Club, especially for a 10 year old movie. Pretty good.

Usual Suspects is decent, though not reference quality. Memento, the same.

The first rule about Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club.

I had the good fortune of getting a BR player for Christmas ... but I have an input shortage, and need a little help:
Currently running my two HDMI ports with the Xbox 360 and HD cable box ... at this point, I have the BR running component, but would like to go HDMI with it.
What would folks who know what they're doing do here? I was thinking about going component with the 360, HDMI with the BR.
The whole setup is running on a 4-yr old 1080i DLP set. I'm worried the BR is as clear as it'll get on my TV. Still good, but I want better! haha, thanks in advance for any assistance.

HDMi is the way to go for the blu-ray palyer, you will be getting the best picture possibly + audio. The reason being is you can't get 720p, 1080i or 1080p out of component on a blu-ray player(component connection is not HDCP compliant), so your only getting 480p pciture, so I would definitely switch the blu-ray player over to HDMi and the Xbox over to component, so you can get full HD out the blu-ray player

haha ... don't know why i didn't think of that. I had a similar device for my coax stuff back in the day; it didn't even occur to me to look for something like that.
Thanks for the tips and links, fellow CAGs.

Another question, I'm going to be setting up this entertainment center away from my cable modem. I'll move my Xbox as well. So I'm thinking of setting up a bridge to connect these to my wireless internet (already have a WRT54G sitting over by my cable modem). Recommendations on brand/set-up?

ok.. WTF is up with The Final Destination.

Reviews say that the 3d version is supposed to be included... but the disc i bought only brought one disc.. and no mention of 3d anywhere...

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Final-Destination-Blu-ray-Review/5169/

That link takes you to amazon where the box has "3D" and its supposed to include digital copy.. but the amazon link takes you to a normal version with no mention of 3d. (like the one i just bought)

ATTENTION FOR ALL WARNER RELEASES:

3D, DVD, Digital Copy, Slipcovers are for FIRST PRESSINGS only.

If you bought a movie and it excludes any of the above, it's because you bought a pressing that was not the FIRST PRESSING. The extra stuff above is simply that - extra stuff to get people to buy on release day/week. Warner only allots a certain amount of that extra stuff, and after that, it's gone. It's a Limited thing.

- Bonus Round! Do you have a newer Warner release with a Slip Cover? Look at it - notice how it mentions Digital Copy/DVD/3D etc on it? Now look at the cover art on the Blu-ray - notice has it does not mention any of that? It's so Warner can re-use that cover art when it finishes its first run without remaking/printing new covers.

(Not directed at you, but this is being discussed in some many places we can just copy/paste this where needed)

thanks bro... this fucking sucks.

It makes no sense. I bought it one fucking week after release. I actually tried to purchase it last weekend but my BB was out of em.

Hey If you are looking for Adult movies, Adam & Eve have many for 50% OFF with Free DVDs. They only have 8 though... but 50% off!

May need a special link or code, I am not sure...

You guys got Final Destination for $20 right??

I may just go ahead and get it now, and not miss out on Limited time thing. Any place still got it for $19.99?

The first pressing is done with. It's luck now if you find a 3D version.

Not really, I don't think.

It's not really that popular. I bet I can still find it, just for $20 or for higher price, that's the question! And, I am NOT paying more than $20!

First pressing is done. That's a fact. Only the first 100k (what I heard) include slip covers and 3D. There may still be 3D versions out there, but not many. Most stores have already ordered third pressings of the title (i.e. sold out twice). So if you want it...go now and try and find it.

But anyway, the Red/Blue 3D sucks. Warner is only doing this Limited press so they can release the 'real' 3D at the end of the year. At a bloated pricetag, of course.
I am not debating THAT fact, I am just betting I can STILL find it.
Yeah, you probably could. Just act now before they are all gone.

Glad I saw this, just got a new one off of ebay for $19.50 shipped with the 3D version. Just started to venture in this section of the site and didn't know these were limited. Guy has 100% feedback and tons of sales so it should work out.

Yep, 100% identical except the disc art is different.
Looks like BSG: The Complete Series on BR is getting a double-dip, apparently with better/slimmer packaging, with the inclusion of "The Plan" with it:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...ca:_The_Complete_Series_Blu-ray_Reissue_/4159

Also looks like if you want the new/revised packaging to replace what you have with the "current" release, you can send them the Season One top flap and you'll get new packaging in 4-6 weeks:

http://forums.highdefdigest.com/1830867-post13.html
man I hope that's true....Id love to see the design of the new box too

That would be awesome! Anyone know if that form is posted somewhere or if we need to e-mail customer service as well

I just sent them an e-mail through their form

According to that post above, it was something that person received via email from Universal directly. You might need to contact someone there to see what the details are.
so for Dr Horrible fans.... Jed Whedon announced via his twitter account at www.twitter.com/drhorrible that Dr Horrible Sing-Along Blog is coming to Blu-ray in may.... MSRP of 19.99 but amazon has the pre-order for 13.99 currently...i know its a long way away...so i figured i'd not put it as a deal.... here's the amazon link

I haven't seen it yet but I've heard great things, I'll be pre-ordering at that price for sure. Probably deserves its own thread.
Bah, I already hav the BSG set. I guess I don't need to own The Plan.
And you can get the revised packaging free, if you'd like.

You should definitely pick it up. It's totally worth it!

I own it and haven't watched it yet... I'm extremely far behind in the world of DVDs & BRs.

Hmm, that does sound tempting. The set box is a nice collectible, but doesn't play nice with most shelving.

Not a big deal but it's kinda lame.

The 3 disc BB exclusive Zombieland comes in a 2 disc case. The bonus disc is just in a paper sleeve.

Ran across this on Blu-Ray.com, from TheDigitalBits.com:
Along these same lines, consider this Rumor Mill-worthy, but our industry sources are telling is that Paramount will be re-issuing their Gladiator Blu-ray later this Summer or Fall, complete with a brand-new 1080p transfer that was just completed a couple of months ago. (It was done after Paramount and Universal realized how bad the first one was, naturally.) Paramount is re-issuing a number of their BDs this month in new Academy Award-themed packaging. The Gladiator DVD is included in this, but not the Blu-ray, and sources tell us this is because they studio will re-issue the Blu-ray timed to the theatrical or home video release of Ridley Scott's Robin Hood later this year. It MAY also be re-branded as a new 10th Anniversary Edition. We'll post official details as they become available. (And no, we don't know if there will be an exchange program there either.)
Would be great news if they did reissue it with the right transfer. Would suck for those that bought the current release if they don't offer an exchange program.
Would suck for those that bought the current release if they don't offer an exchange program.
I am positively shocked by studios "re-issuing" titles within a year or so of their release -- and then not offering an upgrade/exchange program.

That's as unethical as it comes to dealing with consumers...just plain pathetic.

And also not something I recall seeing ever on other formats. Yes titles were recalled -- but when they were, an exchange program would go into effect. The studio would admit it made a mistake and make good. Those times are long, long gone it seems...you bought it, you're stuck with it.

Not all of those have replacement programs, only some of them.

They haven't mentioned any "replacement" with Gangs Of New York and that's getting a re-issue double-dip.

I'm sure Paramount will end up doing a replacement plan otherwise the bad press they had on Gladiator's original transfer will get much worse if they stiff the people that jumped on it when it came out.
