Blu-ray Discussion Thread - The One and Only

the EE's are going to come out right before the Hobbit is released... but now the Hobbit is being held up so we'll see what happens.
They have basically scaled back their CD selections to nothing. movies would be a logical next step to scale back to nothing.
Highly doubtful. DVD and Blu are still major sellers at Best Buy. CDs on the other hand outside of a handful of new releases and The Beatles remasters is pretty much justified in why they have scaled them back.
Thank you sir!

Do you ever sell your Blu's after you're done with them or do you have a massive collection?
I sell the ones I don't have much interest in ever watching again. True Blood is one that gets repeated viewings
Is Good Will Hunting ever going to get an official US release?!?!? My favorite movie, I need it on Blu-ray.
Knowing Disney they'll stall on releasing it forever since they don't give a crap about most of their back catalog films that aren't the big blockbuster cartoons. Don't feel bad since I'm still waiting for even a half way decent anamorphic widescreen release for The Rocketeer and The Three Musketeers on DVD. I'm not holding my breath for a Blu with either of those in 1080p.

On that note I'm glad from what I'm hearing that Saving Private Ryan is thankfully not a DNR sloppy job mess on Blu. Congrats Paramount you have learned from the debacle known as Gladiator.
Is Good Will Hunting ever going to get an official US release?!?!? My favorite movie, I need it on Blu-ray.
Since it's a Mirimax film, and Disney is currently selling that studio, no, probably not for a while.
Since wishlists are being discussed, I really want The Incredibles.
Last I heard it was 'in the can'. So 2011/12 seem likely.
Have you seen it yet? I know some people that like it, but they're all teenagers. I thought it was a horrible movie and I like Superbad and all versions of Dawn of the Dead.
What? How in the world did you hate it? It's a near perfect mix of horror and comedy. Even my brother who hates most horror unless it is serious and is a film buff loved it and it is now one of his favorite movies. I think it's a movie even non horror fans can love and get into.

Any rumblings on Finding Nemo? Those two would finish my Pixar list.

Its been on again off again on when its supposed to be released on Blu-Ray. The last rumored release was May 1st in the UK which didn't happen.

Quite frankly Nemo is the only Pixar film that won't be in my collection. Sorry but I fucking hated it.

Judging by what's left...it's possible it will be released with Fantasia or Dumbo.

No problem with that, to each their own. It's not in my Pixar top 3 but at the same time I don't feel quite as strongly about as you do. :)

Nothing in Zombieland is remotely horrifying, nor are the jokes funny. I can't even begin to relate to the confused alone teenager bit either.

Also posted this in the Supernatural thread but:

Love me some Whedon. Very odd Fox didn't release Dollhouse S2 on this day as well but held it back until late summer. Would be a great tie-in.

None of the reviews of How I Met Your Mother S4 on BR didn't give me a good reason to spend the extra money to get it on BR, so I opted for DVD on that one.

Shows like True Blood S1 and S2 are obvious reasons to get TV on BR, as we've seen.

I agree, canceling shows on the format is a bad thing. However, if they're shows that don't really benefit from the format, it'll give the format a bad perception as not being the massive upgrade in video and audio that we're expecting on BR.

Admittedly, we've had enough TV shows on BR that don't appear to be worth the cost upgrade, though sometimes, you can find them cheaper than the DVD counterparts, so that ends up being a net wash for the lack of compelling upgrades.

If I buy something on BR, I'd like it to be a worthwhile upgrade for the video and audio over DVD. It's such a mixed bag, as we've seen with movies, that it's hard to be able to always assume it'll be a significant upgrade over DVD.
But canceling shows on the format is a bad, bad thing. Lessens the chance for others to come out.
Yeah its quite annoying too. I have Rescue Me Season 3 on Blu-Ray but they released the later seasons on DVD. Looks like Burn Notice is the same. I have my DVD's and Blu's segregated and I would like to continue having seasons on Blu and upgrading.

How are the features on Dr. Horribles Sing along Blog? I saw Amazon had the Blu-Ray for $13.xx awhile ago and was tempted. Saw it on Netflix streaming and it was great.

I have a question for the group. On the whole, do you think that a bad blu ray release is still better than the DVD counterpart?

Example:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Fugitive-Blu-ray/146/

The review here is pretty awful, but that being said is it still going to be better than playing the DVD? I'm still new to the format and I've watched a movie or two that was less than stellar (The Italian Job comes to mind) but it is still really nice overall.

The Fugitive is available for $5 when you send in the DVD but I'm curious if I should even bother. So I ask you CAGs, DVD or poor blu ray...which is better?

I'd have to say on a horrible blu, i'd go with whatever was cheaper at the time. Just check out the "titles to avoid" thread before making that decision.

+1

Also I find it hard to buy a blu ray like Season 12 and 13 of South Park when everything else I have is on DVD. Just seems out of place on my shelf.
Yep...third rebuy for those that bought it initially, and again for the boxset.
But i must have it! Bastards

Meh. I'd rather Lionsgate bring out more unique titles first...but the PS3 demographic is king.

Figured I'd ask here as this seems to be where CAG's bd-know-it-alls hang out. ;) Please forgive me if I get the terminology incorrect, but hopefully it's enough to convey my question accurately.

Now that the UK is getting around to authoring its blurays in its native 50i, I've found more and more blurays are not import friendly with my current equipment. The bluray is not region locked, it just plays at a different frame rate that my tv won't recognize. Is there a device that will allow me to play such a disc on my PS3, but convert the frame rate to NTSC format so that my television will recognize it?

I've done a bit of research online and found some PAL-NTSC converters, but I've been unsuccessful on finding out how they work in the realm of bluray (specifically with a PAL disc in a US PS3).

Here's an example. Of course, I'd like to find something cheaper if such exists.

Any help would be appreciated!

Only certain titles are being authored in 50i, not all (and certainly not "getting around to it"). All the "big" studio release will be fine, it's just some of the more obscure stuff. And unless you are Region Free, it won't really matter much.

I am Region Free and have about 15 or so UK releases. My LG Blu-ray player can pass 50i stuff just fine, and I don't have a problem (and if I do, I just switch the setting to 720p or 1080i and the disc plays fine). The only problem some people might have is the Trailers at the start of the Blu-ray disc may not play and you might not be able to get to the main menu.

And personally, anyone using a PS3 for Blu-ray playback in 2010 is not serious about Blu-ray. It was great in 2006,2007 and even 2008 when Blu-ray stand alones were crap and the BDA couldn't figure out what the hell it was doing, but nowadays just get a stand alone player since they can do so much more (unless you like playing PS3 games, which I don't).

That sounds a bit elitist, don't you think? What exactly is wrong with the PS3 for blu ray playback?

No display, requires a Bluetooth remote. PS3 was great when Blu-ray stand alones sucked, but now, I'd never touch one.

Soooo.. no real reason why PS3 sucks for Blu-Ray.

I guess I've got a couple of obscure titles then. 2Entertain is putting its new releases out in 50i (provided the source material is also 50i).

When you say "I am Region Free", are you referring to the LG player being region free? If it can pass 50i, does it have a converter built in or is your television doing the converting? In my case, when I put these particular blurays in the PS3, the screen stays black and there is no audio.

I've got a PS3 and have had one since early 2008. Why should I go out and buy a stand alone player if the PS3 works fine? Eventually I'll upgrade, but I've got to get a decent sound system first. It's all in the priorities. ;)

lol those are the stupidest reasons ever. you have any real reasoning for hating the ps3 blu player?
Soooo.. no real reason why PS3 sucks for Blu-Ray.
I just listed it. No reason to use a video game console to watch Blu-rays on. That's so 3 years ago.

I have a LG BH200 which can be made Region Free. The only way for you to go Region free is to track down a LG BH200 ($200+) or one of the shady players on eBay right now (Momitsu - about $150). I think the Oppo's can be made Region free with a hardware hack, software hack is a bit risky. Problem is, thanks to Blu-ray's every chaging spec, you will need to update the firmare every once and a while to play newer Blu-rays, and doing so may make those region free players no longer region free (Momitsu).

My BH200 and TV (Toshiba Regza) pass 50i stuff just fine. I think I had an issue once with one disc where the audio was out of Sync, so I just switched it to 720p and it worked fine. That converter is $180...better off just getting a region free BD player.

In your opinion. My opinion is not having an actual Display or a remote makes it not really a feasible player. Not to mention the power the PS3 uses, constant firmware updates, chance of burning out the laser faster, and (now) being pretty damn slow in comparison to other players. You can buy a stand alone for about $100 now and they do far more features (streaming, Netflix without a silly disc, Pandora, Amazon VOD, Cinema Now, playing various video files etc.) that the PS3 can't do. Sorry you don't agree with me. But if you are on a fixed income and just have to also have something to play videogames on, get a PS3. I'll never touch one again - especially not for Blu-ray. It's a 'toy' and I don't want a 'toy' to watch movies on.
