Blu-ray Discussion Thread - The One and Only
But honestly, I'm just watching an MKV on my BD590 and after plan to hit up VuDu with a little Netflix after (Look Mom, no disc!).

So...how would I do that on the PS3?
Cool story brah. Did you know there are people out there that don't have netflix, and don't care to get it?
Please accept the fact that the PS3 is no longer the bee's knee's of Blu-ray players. As I said, in 2010, anyone buying a PS3 for Blu-ray are losing out (couple hundred bucks and several worthwhile features). No one in their right mind would pay $300+$20 for a Remote ( ) for a PS3 Blu-ray player to just play Blu-rays on. They would grab a $150 WiFi BD player that loads discs faster, uses less power and typically has more movie-like features.
Using the controller that comes with the ps3 is SO hard to figure out how to use. And no one in this entire thread has said the ps3 is the best player out there.

Ps, we get it. You like to say bee's knee's.
Hey Gizmo how's the picture quality on season 2? I REALLY want to get both seasons on blu but want to make sure the quality is there.
It sucks on the PS3, but looks amazing on any standalone.

Never seen so many people get their panties in a bunch about owning a player which is no longer the bee's knee's. Yes, I do like to say it :)
Show me anywhere I said that the PS3 is "the bee's knees" or some variation on that theme. You can't because I didn't. It's become crystal clear that you're not really paying attention to what some people have been saying. The majority of people (including myself) are saying that the PS3 is a satisfactory player, NOT the best player. For people who have bought the PS3 to play games on, it can also be a fully sufficient player for that individual's needs. Your needs clearly are not in line with theirs and that's fine; however, applying your desires to someone else's situation is shortsighted and simply a matter of not considering alternate possibilities.
Thank you.

(And this thread has never been so active before! I bring it back to life.)
Let's bring this thread back to something other that arguing over BR players.

Found this on HDD about a new version of Predator being released, supposedly with a new transfer:
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...r_Edition_Blu-ray_to_Include_Extra_Bonus/4787

Comes out on June 29th, and it'll be packed with $10 of movie cash for Predators.
No thanks. I don't reward studios who put out a piss-poor version the first time with a re-buy of their 'new and improved' version unless it's used - so they don't get the sale. They should have delayed (well, canceled) the original release since they knew they were remaking it. And yet another re-release on Blu-ray and we are still trucking along 4 years now with most studios barely releasing anything catalog besides Warner.

Which is why I don't buy bad releases when they come out, and I certainly don't try to double-dip.

I didn't buy the first one because it was a PQ and AQ mess, and I can only hope it's fixed this time around for those that want to buy it.

Packing it with $10 movie cash for Predators will probably get people buying it for that alone.

Knowing what I know about Fox, they could have canceled the shitty release of Predator and issued out one of the many other BDs they are currently (stilll) sitting on. Instead, they opted to release it to appeal to the PS3 Core base since they would essentially buy anything that goes boom (and this still holds true today). After the recent...how shall I put this...poor sales of some higher profile 'classic' films, I don't see Fox or any other studio going back to their vaults anytime soon (besides Warner - they at least give a damn most of the time). I still dream of the day I get a Blu-ray version of Harold and Maude...or a decent looking The Graduate (Might import the new BD version from the UK if it's improved. Still have my VC1 HD DVD Import and Domestic MPEG2 Blu-ray).

And before it starts - Blu-ray is still very much a PS3 Demographic platform. No need to continue on about your previous PS3 players. It's just that the studio knows who buys the majority of movies, and it's gamers who like things that go boom.

What's wrong with things that go boom? I spent close to $1000 on my receiver and speakers so i could hear my booms real good!

Junior High must be out for the summer. Amazing how you can't even have a conversation without people freaking out about something their mom bought them.

For me the solution is simple: don't buy the shitty blu ray releases, and buy the good ones. I could give two shits about "sending the studio a message" because I know they don't give a shit either. Anyway, I buy a lot less of any disc release these days because of Netflix.

Anyone know what is different with the Predator (Ultimate Hunter Edition) BD? Nothing says what is different from this and the other one on BD.

For Horror fans...
Night of the Living Dead 1968; Region A

So not a joke. Apparently, this film finally hit Blu-ray even after having received a million releases on DVD because the film is in public domain (how it managed not to get released on Blu-ray or HD DVD in the past is beyond me). So far it's only appeared on eBay (if link is not allowed, please remove), but someone bought the disc and posted their impressions:

Link to Review:
Many horror fans are aware of the sad distribution story surrounding George A. Romero’s seminal Night of the Living Dead. The film’s credits were finished with the original “Night of the Flesh Eaters” title, but the feature’s distributor requested the title changed since surprisingly another film was already entitled that. The title was changed to the now iconic “Night of the Living Dead” as the film went off to do giant theatrical success both domestically and abroad. The problem was the copyright was mistakenly left off the credits after the title change, advantageous distributors soon realized the grave error, and this classic slid into public domain. Anyone can release Night theatrically or on home video with no problem. This is why there’s currently twenty-six unwanted copies at your nearest Dollar Tree and even Night’s extensive restorations by Elite Entertainment, who essentially saved the vault materials from being lost forever, and the Weinstein Company are in the same sinking boat.

This brings us to the newest home video format, Blu-ray, promising far greater image and sound quality than any previous consumer format. Despite being a fairly recent format, Night of the Living Dead has already been released on BD twice, with both editions hailing from the United Kingdom. First, Optimum Releasing issued a Region B Blu-ray in 2008 of a well restored high definition source that was strikingly better than ever seen prior. All seemed so great, in spite of the region locking, but the bite came in the form of image cropping. All four sides of the frame exhibited noticeable slicing away of picture information seen on the restored DVD releases. The following year, Network released their region free BD and while the presentation was uncropped–the source was a dirty beat up print with wonky contrast. The film was also mysteriously missing about thirty seconds of footage here-and-there throughout. It should go with saying fans with Blu-ray capability were again miffed at the situation.

Then suddenly, a PD distributor, “Forgotten Films”, began selling North American Blu-rays of Night on eBay about two weeks ago. I was admittedly skeptical, believing it was a snake oil salesman pushing off DVD (or worse) transfers on Blu-ray, but temptation led to an order. I just received the disc and to my surprise its a factory pressed 25GB single layer BD disc in a “real” Blu-ray case. The film is presented in its original 1.33:1 full frame ratio and encoded in MPEG-4 AVC with a high bitrate consistently hovering around thirty megabytes a second. The 1080p/24fps picture quality is unmistakably high definition with a nice layer of fine grain over the entire presentation and very minimal print damage. Detail isn’t consistent, this is a low budget feature from the ’60s after all, but it really shines when it decides to and looks noticeably superior to both Elite Entertainment’s Millennium Edition and Dimension Extreme’s matted 1.85:1 DVD edition.

Yet here’s the thing, the picture is cropped much in the same way as the Optimum (a little less actually) and missing at least one snippet like the Network. Though I don’t believe this is a direct rip from either of those Blu-rays. It looks far too good to be the Network transfer, but it’s missing a few seconds when Barbara recounts her ordeal with Johnny to Ben unlike the “uncut” Optimum disc. The seconds where Barbara says something to the effect of “it’s hot in here” and unbuttons her jacket are missing, so there’s a sudden jump from her jacket being closed then opened. I didn’t notice any other cuts and the film runs exactly 95 minutes, 19 seconds. Audio quality is a relatively clear 640kbps standard Dolby stereo track, there’s eighteen chapter stops, and the only “extra” is a slideshow of captures from the disc.

So Forgotten Films’s Blu-ray is kinda tough to recommend even with the somewhat modest $20 price tag. It’s cropped a little and cut a little, but trust me, it certainly has impressive image quality regardless. I’ll leave it up to you to dig around on eBay for it and decide whether it’s worth it to you. As a sidenote, Dimension Extreme has noted they will release an “official” North American Blu-ray sometime in the future, but their DVD is, like mentioned, not in the film’s original aspect ratio (or at least the ratio everyone’s used to).

Warner (HBO) has changed around their TV on BD release designs (for HBO Shows). I got Hung yesterday and while it includes a slip cover, it's one that opens up (like a book) and the case that holds the BDs slides out from the bottom. Very odd design.
He looks like an Action Figure. Damn.
I thought it was more along the lines of a wax figure but yeah, that would be downright annoying to watch.

I don't know if Fox will be sending this re-release out to reviewers...so steer clear of it until a proper, non-biased review popup.
Fox dropped the ball on the upcoming Predator re-release in the most hilarious way possible.

I'm speechless.

This new Predator transfer was one of my most anticipated titles.

After seeing this and reading more about it, I promptly canceled my order for it. I hope this is a joke or NOT the transfer of the R1 release, but after this I couldn't bear even risking it.

Worst transfer "upgrade" I've ever seen. He's an action figure!

I look forward to reading reviews and impressions from people who pick up the new version. One person has already claimed it looks 'great' and an improvement from people that have it. Clearly the screenshots say otherwise, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

I really didn't find that much wrong with the original Predator transfer, the film just looks good in that style of presentation, and DNR is always a shameful thing to have on titles. The bonus features were a tipping point for me on this new edition, not so much the need for better PQ. Don't get me wrong, the first release could have looked better, but not when completely sacrificing the movie and its presentation.

Much like I don't want to see colorized versions of black and white films, seeing "restored" (scrubbed of all grain with fake effects in this case) is appalling for me.

Predator looked bad because Fox put no work into the title. They released it in 2008 when it was originally going to come out in 2006 and that was using an already-nasty 4 year old encode. The new version has a new transfer but went through the DNR machine to make it 'pretty' for the dumb.

Getting ready to cross over to the dark side. In an attempt to not get people flinging shit, I'll try to make this as clearly defined as possible - without linking me to a 200 page thread on a home theater enthusiast forum and saying "read this," what's the best player right now in the $200 or less range? I am not interested in a used PS3 or whatever so please stick to standalone players if you reply.

^ In that price range I'd go : Samsung BD-C6500
Samsungs webpage lists it as $250 but if you shop around you can find it for less. This ones from late '08 early '09
(This isnt the player I have FTR.)
Seems to have all the streaming capabilities of higher end boxes. Only it lacks the ability to play files like Matroska.

Damnit and I wanted to pick this Predator up. Well looks like I will be holding off to find out what is going on with it. Almost bought it on BD already but the lack of extras stopped me. I had thought that one with extras would come out. I just didn't think i twould look like ass.

I just picked this baby up last month based on recommendations and Panasonic releasing continues firmware updates on even older players.

Since you didn't want a 200 page on different players, here is a 16 page thread just about the Panasonic BD65

Where we're going we don't need roads...

After many years of waiting (and one convincing headfake back in January), Universal has finally confirmed in a press release that the Back to the Future Trilogy will be released on Blu-Ray on October 26, 2010.
http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/06/28...ary-blu-ray-will-be-released-october-26-2010/

:whee:

The HD transfers for all three films are simply breath-taking…They actually look better than they did in the theater because of the incredible job that was done on dirt clean-up. (And the film grain is preserved, so they still look like movies should look.)

:whee:

I'll believe the PQ on those films when we get a number of reviews that say it's that good.

Same goes for the Alien Quadriology that's been rumored to be on the way out in the fall as well.
Didn't they fudge up the DVD transfer of Back to the Future? I seem to recall sending away a disk to be replaced.
yup, the framing was messed up

I don't even know if I would want Alien Quadriology. The first two would be great but the last two almost makes it not even werth it. Also James Cameron has said that he plans to some time go back and do audio comentary on all his older movies. So Aliens could come out with new comentary some time in the next few years.

Just being able to get the first one on BD is enough for me to pony up for the whole set. That movie is AMAZING.

Got this on Saturday. Audio is DD2.0 and not 5.1 like promised. Very disappointed with this.
