hello all,
so today is my office's big 'after busy season' party. We are going to tavern on the green and there is an open bar (fuck yeah) now on to the important part.

What are some drinks i should try?

i usually end up falling back on jack & coke, beers, vox& oj.

I asked a friend of mine and he suggested a manhattan.

Id also like to try a gin & juice as well.

give me your suggestions, and what is in them.

Thanks :)

yes i realize this is a video game website but i know we have some drinkers on here, so lets here it.

You cannot fail with Jack and Coke. Stick to what you like to be on the safe side. Whiskey sours are pretty good too but are dangerously close to being un-manly to drink in public. (Alot of mixed drinks are IMO). Try some scotch on the rocks with a splash of water, it will put hair on places of your body that wasn't there before.

Accountant? Man do I regret majoring in the field.

You owe it to yourself to have a gin and tonic or a gin buck (gin with ginger ale). Both are delicious and very refreshing.

I wish my office did fun things. We work in the boonies and once in a blue moon do something lame like goto the generic mexican chain restaurant around the corner.

Mahattans are ok if you like Bourbon, but if you're goin for hard core drinks like that I'd start with a dry Martini, w/olives of course

Gin and Tonic - Get a respectable gin like Tanqueray.

Red Bull & Vodka - Gets the party started. I heard on the radio it's good w/grape vodka.

Get some shots, like Kamekazes, Soco and Lime, or if you dare the Red Headed Slut (Jagermesiter in this...)
If you do end up sipping on Gin & Juice, please quote Snoop Dogg at all possible times.
You can only do that if you are rolling down the street and smoking indo at the same time.
You cannot fail with Jack and Coke.
Yeah you can. Jack Daniels is trash. It's what I refer to as "the redneck shield." Find a hillbilly who is drunk on JD, and the one persistent thing is that they're violent as fuck and think they're totally unstoppable. It's trash whiskey and it's annoying.

Drink bourbon instead. Try it neat. Take tiny sips, let it roll around your tongue.

About the only "and" drink I'll recommend is Gin and Tonic (w/ squeeze of lime if you like). The occasional Cuba Libre is fine too.

Sorry, I'm a purist for the most part. Experience alcohol, don't just get "fucked up."

Okay, scratch that last part. Get fucked up: but if you're going to, just drink cheap $5/12pack beer.
Jameson & Coke. You will not regret it.
I'll slap the shit out of you for mixing Jameson. ;)

Really, though, I can understand if you want something to rinse your mouth out with after a drink, but not at the same time. Please.

There's no need to buy name-brand booze and mix it with soda. Just buy the well shit if you're gonna mix.

OP, what's the weather like where you're at?
There's no need to buy name-brand booze and mix it with soda. Just buy the well shit if you're gonna mix.
You don't want to buy bottom of the barrel for mixing tho. Get something middle of the road, to avoid that headache later.

BTW - some chick was trying to impress me with how much she knew abt Vodka and she said that Absolut was top of the line. I just didn't care enough to correct her...

lol definately make some snoop references.

ive had gin & tonic and thoroughly enjoy that

i also enjoy scotch on the rocks, when drinking it you know you are drinking, no hiding behind a soda or juice.

vox and cran is great i agree.

seagrams and 7 up is good too, forgot about that.

wish they had different beer there though they only get corona and heineken.... oh well heineken is good enough.

so far my list of to try are:
manhatan
gin & juice
jameson & coke
crown & coke
gin buck
kamekaze shot

ps weather wise is is pretty nice supposed to hit 67 today honestly ive been inside in my office since 8 15 so....it looks sunny outside...

ill have to give bourbon a whirl, honestly i dont know if ive had enough of it to form an opinion.
what is some good bourbon to try?

Amen, don't waste good whisk(e)y. Hell, don't waste mediocre whiskey.

Personally, i prefer a little ice, but still enjoy the good stuff.

I disagree; if you want to mix, you deserve the headache from $4/750ml booze.

Vodka's an interesting monster, because some of it tastes downright dreadful, while the best I've had have little to no flavor at all, and are very smooth in terms of the alcohol burn. Nevertheless, I'll kill any pretentious asshole that wants to claim that vodka "bruising" is possible or noticeable on the palate.

For a shot, Liquid Cocaine (a mix of Jagermeister, Goldschlagger, and Rum) or A Screaming Nazi (Jagermeister and peppermint schnapps).

Gin is pretty good as well, so I'll recommend that. Jager and coke is one of my favorite drinks along with Goldschlagger and coke.

Btw, if the place has a decent cup of coffee, get Baileys and coffee together. Good stuff.

It may be good straight, but the bar I frequent pours about 1/2 and 1/2 with coke and Jameson, and it is probably the most delicious drink I have ever had.

Yes to Vodka + Tonic, that's a great drink. Also Yes to the Vodka Martini, dry and dirty (with olive juice).

Also, bear in mind that there are two types of Manhattans. The Classic Manhattan (with sweet Vermouth) and the Perfect Manhattan (with sweet AND dry vermouth) I would recommend the Classic Manhattan and ask the bartender to throw some bitters into the mixer as well. Garnish with a cherry or lemon twist.

Something that's a bit of an "Old Man" drink that I discovered at a recent wedding is the Bourbon Old Fashioned.

It's a little crazy as you take bitters, sugar and water and muddle them in a glass. Then add Whiskey or Bourbon over ice. Garnish with an orange or Cherry
Alternatively, bartenders can also just mix bitters, lemon-lime soda, OJ and cranberry juice.
It's pretty good.

If you like dr. pepper try a flaming dr. pepper.
I could list others but with your list you already have I want you to live to tell the story.

As a Kentuckian, I resent that you would permit a non-bourbon whiskey to enter into your old fashioned.

Gin and Tonic is good, but too much Gin makes one do bad things. Vodka and Tonic with a Lime is a good substitute.
I would stay away from a Manhatten if you are not a big drinker.

Good drinks to try:
007- Bacardi O, OJ, 7up (tastes like Sunny D)
7 n' 7

For a shot:
SnakeBite, Lunch boxes, or just plain Jameson is good.

keep the suggestions coming :) im compiling a list of CAG's favorites to try

also i have a friend who has never really drank but wants 'something' today.

im thinking the same thing my wife likes a malibu baybreeze maybe?

a screaming nazi would not a a proper thing to order at an accountant party... i think that would be bad taste

Just don't pull the "shaken not stirred" joke if you order a martini, probably the corniest joke you could do to a bartender.;)

Chimpy, Chimpy, Chimpy...it's open bar at Tavern on the Green.

Don't waste your time with garbage - go straight for the top shelf. SERIOUSLY.

MykeVermin has the right idea - ENJOY the alcohol, don't violate it with mixes or order sissy drinks. Those are for your ladies (get her a Long Island Iced Tea or 4, if you really want her effed up, or a Fuzzy Navel, Sex on the Beach, Cosmopolitan, or a dirty Martini if she doesn't like sweet drinks).

For you, it's all about starting with some good, smooth starters and something neat to finish the evening.

Start with Grey Goose straight up or on the rocks with a twist of lemon. Or Stoli if you prefer something with slightly more of a bite. Try a traditional martini, dry, and made with Stoli, Grey Goose, or Bombay Sapphire gin, and even better if they have blue cheese stuffed olives.

Then move on to the 'brown liquors'. Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey...bourbon and scotch, preferably neat - no ice, no soda, no nothing. Forget the JD, Cutty Sark, Jameson, all of those. Get some Hennessy Paradis or Louis XIII. But only if the company is paying for it, as shot servings of these will run into the hundreds.

Yeah... I agree to an extent although the true hillbillies opt for the cheaper Jim Beam instead. And anyone who can't handle their alcohol will show that side whether it's tequila or Puckers.

I'll never claim to be a connoisseur, but I do know I prefer certain drinks/brands. Maybe when I'm working in my career field I'll have the extra $$ to be adventurous at the liquor store.

And I'm not sure I'd recommend trying a new drink neat to someone for the first time. The reaction face might earn them a new nickname with co-workers. ;)

I will take a recommendation if you'd like to suggest a better alternative to Jack though.

Has nobody mentioned an AMF yet? Best tasting mixture of 90% alcohol with only a little mixer. Order one at the start of your party and you'll be set. Also, Whiskey Sour is not sissy, order one up.

Mojitios are mighty tasty, also cuba libre as previously mentioned.
If you like milk or coffee flavors, go for a White Russian. Just watch out for the milk stach.

whats a good bourbon to try?

you guys do make some good points..it is going to be high shelf.
a screaming nazi would not a a proper thing to order at an accountant party... i think that would be bad taste
I don't know - it might be a great way to chase a Kamikaze ;)
whats a good bourbon to try?
I'm partial to Makers Mark, though I haven't had many bourbons to say it's better or worse than others. It is my absolute favorite hard alcohol though.

Southern Comfort and Arizona Diet Green Tea makes for happy times.

Otherwise I just drink a ton of miller lite or cheap beers.

If you like Tequila then you should try Corazon. Very smooth and is better when sipped. I used to like Patron until I started drinking the more expensive Tequila's. I also lost a taste for it when I found out that the Paul Mitchell company (yes, the hair products company) owns Patron Tequila.
a screaming nazi would not a a proper thing to order at an accountant party... i think that would be bad taste
I'm sure there's another name for it you could use, I just think it's a pretty good drink.

I'm a huge beer fan myself, but doesn't sound like that party will have much of a decent beer selection (i..e good micro brews, imports).
Bourbon, straight up, is all you ever need.
Second this. Give me Wild Turkey and I'm a happy fuck. Flaming shots of the 101 proof are amazing.
Forget the JD, Cutty Sark, Jameson, all of those. Get some Hennessy Paradis or Louis XIII. But only if the company is paying for it, as shot servings of these will run into the hundreds.
Forget whiskey, try cognac? I don't follow.

Also, I'm not familiar with Tavern on the Green, but I suspect that, even in the unlikely event they stock such high-end items (and they may), they ain't included on the "open bar" tab.
Bourbon, straight up, is all you ever need. But I must say, Jack and Bawls is surprisingly good tasting.
Jack =/= Bourbon. It says "Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey" right there on the bottle. Ain't good enough to call itself bourbon.
whats a good bourbon to try?

Hmm. Easy and common recommendations are Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, Elijah Craig, Maker's Mark, and Jim Beam (in that order of preference for me).

If this is the kind of joint that has a large selection of spirits, see if they carry any of the "Van Winkle" bourbons: Old Rip Van Winkle, Pappy Van Winkle, and some other one I can't remember. My personal favorite, but not something my pocketbook can afford (the Van Winkles are aged longer than your grandparents, man).
If you like Tequila then you should try Corazon. Very smooth and is better when sipped. I used to like Patron until I started drinking the more expensive Tequila's. I didn't know that. Pretty interesting. Is something the matter with Paul Mitchell that I don't know about?

Rum + ginger ale tastes similar to cream soda. Even better if you have some Bacardi vanilla rum.

My mixed drink of choice is a dark rum like Gosling's or Myer's with Diet Coke and a twist of lime.

You'd have to be incredibly insecure to not drink something because it's a "girl drink."

And Jack Daniels kicks ass, anyone from Kentucky who says otherwise is just jealous.

I never said it was. He's asking for recommendations, so I recommended bourbon. I just added that a Jack and Bawls is also a good drink, but I never insinuated that Jack is a bourbon itself. Jack is really only good for mixing, I'd much rather sip a glass of Walker or Maker's Mark.

O I'm not 21+, I guess I can't drink responsively and I'm not allowed to be in this topic.

PS: E and J's Brandy + Sierra Mist. VERY cheap, VERY delicious.

Knob Creek is probably my favorite whiskey. I guess if I had to mix it I would mix it with Sprite, but I would rather sip it clean and warm.
