Borderlands - Gen. Discussion & Info - OUT NOW (8.0 GS, 8.8 IGN, 88 Metacritic)

I might be able to make it work with my Soldier though, because I can just sit back and let me Turret recharge and drop after I run out of ammo. And my coop partner is a hunter, so between us having 2 range, rechargable damaging attacks, we should be good.

I guess you could do it with the energy weapons too.

Take a regenerating ammo soldier class mod. If you have one.

That reminds me, I should get back into Borderlands. My dad has been playing it nonstop. I think he did the singleplayer with all the DLC right now for the hunter and siren and he is working on the other two.
^How are you farming crawmerax on 40-50? I tried to fight him with my lvl50+ and a friends lvl47, and we got handled in the first 10 seconds. Literally.
Its been awhile since I played it, but I soloed it at 42 with a Siren and teamed up with friends when playing a soldier. The focus at 40 is to kill its minions first until 50. I think it was around then I soloed Crawmerax and its crew with the Siren (phase-shift ftw). As for the soldier, I got help from friends until around 60 before soloing afterwards. There are some tube vids on it for soldier without using that glitch, but they are a high level.
Well what class are you? The only one I could see having a problem would be Brick. If you're a Siren then run to the edge, Hunter throw Bloodwing and book it towards the edge, Soldier throw the turret and run. It's really not that big of an if. ;)

/QUOTE]

Yup, I'm a Brick. I have trouble just making it to that corner...And no bonus xp mods for anything...it's been a slow crawl to 50 for me.

Yeah, you'll probably need to team with someone to farm him, then. Either that or see about respecing your guy just for Crawmerax.
I tried that trick. I used every bullet I had and wasn't able to do any significant damage to it.
It will take time. First time I did it I was shooting it for about an hour before it died. Pick up some ammo regen mods before you head up there to face him and you should be fine.

I grabbed the "and they'll tell two friends" trophy last night, so if someone still needs it, add me and we can play together tonight.

I'm also looking for a co-op partner to help me take down sledge so I can get the co-op trophy. I'm on the quest to kill him on my second playthrough, but if someone is on their first playthrough and wants me to blast them through it, let me know.

This isn't meant to be trolling, but are the expansion packs worth it? I played through the game once and got board with it. I have never played on multiplayer either. Is that more fun or is everything in the exact same place as it is in the regular campaign?

It seems like all I do is check the same crates and get slightly better weapons. I also have trouble finding out what weapons are better than others. It seems like the ones you can sell for the least are actually the best weapons for my character.

I don't think I've ever seen an ammo regenerating mod for a siren.
It's no big deal because I had someone help me beat it awhile ago.

I played through the whole game and most of the expansions with a friend and it was pretty much just a coop shooter.

After that, I hopped in a game with 3 randoms (2 that were pretty under powered) and it was a totally different experience. The skill tree and the RPG aspects took over. My medic skills became #1 priority, as I was running around the place healing my team, reviving people, and throwing turrets to flank enemies so they could get away.

It was a really interesting experience to see how it changed. In 2 player, I would occasionally have to heal up my partner, and we played off each others skills a little, but it was nothing like that.

Two of the expansions are worth it: Zombie Island and Fort Knoxx. Robot Revolution is meh, and the Underdome is just a frustrating experience (see below). Playing co-op makes it a whole new game. The enemies become more difficult and drop better loot. Strategy really starts to come into play when you get more people playing and this is when the game becomes extremely fun.

Everything is in the same place, but as I said, the enemies are harder. My friend and I have played it so many times that we go through the campaign by speed raiding. Basically, we go in areas and tactically clear them as fast as possible. Sometimes we also play using only certain types of weapons and we also try to switch up and use different classes.

If you want better weapons, you can farm the New Haven area by running around and hitting all the chests then saving and reloading. Check YouTube for some videos on the quickest route. If you do that for 30 minutes or so, you should get some better stuff. Sell all the crap, and check the machines for orange/yellow weapons.

If you get the Knoxx DLC, you can farm Crawmerax for better gear which is easy as soon as you figure out the right spot in the rocks to stand and get a sniper called an Orion that lets you ricochet rounds onto his back. Keep in mind you need acid weapon for the armored worms, electric for the maggots, and fire for the green worms. I can kill him alone with my level 69 soldier in probably 10 minutes or so 85% of the time (sometimes he knocks you off the ledge running to your spot.

As far as telling which gear is the best, rarity is coded by: White < Green < Blue < Purple < Orange/Yellow < Teal (only if you have Knoxx DLC, and only in special chests or from certain enemies). While that order doesn't necessarily equal the best, it is a good indicator. I wont even look at a weapon or item that isn't at least purple.

About the Underdome (didn't want to disrupt my train of thought above): You basically have these arenas where you fight wave after wave of enemies. The enemies are scaled to your level, they give you ZERO experience, and the weapons at the end of each round are shitty at best. There are a series of lower challenge arenas in which you fight 5 rounds with each round having 5 waves of enemies. The larger challenge arenas are where it becomes terrible because it's the same maps as before only you fight 20 rounds with each having 5 waves of enemies, so basically 100 waves of enemies.

During the challenges, if you are alone and you die, you get rolled back a few rounds. If you are with a co-op partner, and one of you dies you get hung up in a penalty cage that you can snipe from. If you both die, you get rolled back a few rounds. To make it even more frustrating, there are mods to each wave. Some examples: enemies move at high speed, enemies have larger magazines, you have no shields, or my personal favorite: vampire, during which you constantly lose health unless you are killing something.

My friend and I did two of the larger challenges with two level 69 soldiers and it took us 5-6 hours for each challenge. Keep in mind we both had insane orange elemental weapons, the most legit shields we've found after 100+ Crawmerax runs (toughest boss, drops best loot), class mods that did team ammo regen and team shield regen, and we held up in the best possible sniping or defensive positions the entire time.
if anyone would be interested in playing online let me know lvl 9 just got it the other day
What class are you?

I don't know that I'm ready to abandon my soldier yet- but if someone wants to do PT2 or just run around and kill stuff in a party of 4, i'd be interested. I'm a mid 50s soldier medic. I live in Central time, and free most nights 6-11, and mornings on Weekends.

I just started playing this yesterday after getting it for $14.99 from PSN. I'm not a big FPS guy but I am having fun with it. I think the reason I don't like FPS games is I really hate being attacked by stuff and not even seeing it/realizing it till I'm half dead. And this is just skags I'm talking about ;). I mean, I don't like that stuff can come up behind you. At least in a third person shooter you can see that happening.

I will probably try playing coop with my son. He's a much better FPS player than me (as he plays Halo all the time). That should make it more interesting.

As it is right now, I was getting completely destroyed by that Bone Head guy. But then I realized I went in there at level 7 and he was 10. Now, after doing some other stuff, I'm at 10 plus I've found some better weapons - so I'll have to try him again tomorrow.

Thanks for the explanation on the color coding above - I had no idea what the green and blue meant (all I've seen so far). I thought green meant good for my class or something and I wasn't using the blues .

What does it mean when it flashes a multiplier on the damage? Is this because of your class, or just something that is a feature of that weapon (though if that was the case I'd think it would just show more damage)?
What does it mean when it flashes a multiplier on the damage? Is this because of your class, or just something that is a feature of that weapon (though if that was the case I'd think it would just show more damage)?
The multiplier is a weapon feature, not a bonus you've created. Typically, the multiplier indicates how many rounds are released per shot. Like a shotgun, flashing 20 (x10) is shooting 10 bullets with 20dmg each. The accuracy determines how tightly those rounds are packed together (from what I can tell).

It gets kind of annoying trying to do the math on it later in the game- when you start finding 50dmg(x5) guns and 30dmg(x12) guns.

Also- to explain the elemental stuff. There are 1-4x elemental powers. The level determines the strength of the elemental damage, plus how the weapon handles it. All the weapons handle elemental powers differently. For example, Shotguns and Repeaters are more likely to shoot a random element infused shot every few times you pull the trigger, where as Combat Rifles and machine pistols are more likely to fire off their elemental shots early in use, and then only fire standard shots after a few rounds.

Rocket launchers are always 4x, and always shoot elemental. Sniper rifles kind of have a recharge period. The elemental damage is random like the other guns, but it's highly likely that your first shot will by elemental.

Or when you have a shotgun that does 400 x 12 :D.

http://borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/Elemental_Damage goes into supreme detail on the elemental stuff, if you want more than nbballard explained above.

When you get weapons that are purple or better with x4 elemental, chances are you're going to do elemental damage every time. A yellow/orange acid shotgun is probably one of the better weapons in the game due to most enemies being highly vulnerable to corrosive damage.

Another thing to keep in mind is your weapon proficiency. As you use a certain type of weapon, your skills go up for that type over time. This makes it advantageous to stick to a few specific types of weapons so you can raise your proficiencies in them and be a better killing machine.

I think that I found the trick to making a solo Underdome run fun = alcohol. I fired it up about 6 beers in and was able to zone-out in some sort of drunken master haze while I finished the 12 pack. ;)

yeah gun management is work in this game especially when you find awesome guns youre not leveled up enough to use. im carting around 2 level 25 handguns ( one with fire damage the other shock) so that when i finally get leveled up ill have them but im only level 18 or 19 now so yeah.

addictive game though i kinda feel bad for those skags or whatever they die so easily and to see them together like some kind of family only to wipe them out for what little loot they drop. i like using bloodwing too its like having one of those pet birds from silverhawks.

no what i meant was ive seen the dlc places listed i just never went to any of them but i went to the underdome and dropped off the high level guns for later. ill check the rest of the place/places out once i finish the main story.

Glad I started playing this - it is very addictive.

I've been trying some coop with my boys but they never have too much time to play and I keep getting father and farther ahead of them (as I play late at night when they are asleep). It is kind of a joke when I take my level 15+ char into their level 2-5 games ;). But at least it lets them progress very rapidly.

I have a question about trophies. Is this game like LBP2 where it uses a profile save so that you can actually earn trophies when playing on someone else's account? That is rare for PS3 games, but it seems by the way it loads different people's game saves that it might do this which would be nice. Then I could play splitscreen with my kids and still get trophies.

The main profile used to host gets the trophies for sure. As for the 2nd profile save used in split-screen, I've read that person would need to continue/start their SP campaign (solo) where the trophies accumulated from that split-screen session would come up. This may work or not as people trying this state it still does not unlock while others say it does.

Yeah, that's what I meant. That is how it works in LBP 2. When you start your own game back up you will get any trophies you may have unlocked while playing on someone else's game (locally). This happened to me for sure on LBP 2. I was hoping Borderlands would be the same way as I will probably be playing all my coop missions in splitscreen on my son's account since I am so much higher level than him. I may test it out with one of the easy to get ones like the two dueling trophies.

I just started playing through the game again. 1st playthrough I was the chick, this time I am the "hunter". I am going to have to finally sit down at set up a psn account.

the hunter is awesome i mailny chose him because of the sword and hes fun to use especially when you tweak his bird with special abilities. i wish you could level up some of those guns though instead of just tossing them aside theres a few i liked the look of but after a few exp levels i had to toss aside for better stuff.

I don't know much about it- but I've heard that sometimes if you put stuff in the storage at the Underdome, when you get it out the stats have adjusted slightly...

Or i'm thinking of Dragon Age.

I haven't been heavy into multiplayer games since the original xbox days with rainbow six and splinter cell, but this game has definitely changed my mind a bit. The last few nights I have been playing with three of my friends that are at home out of state for summer, so it's been great to "hang" with them. We each have our PS3s set up on a desk next to our computer and we've been using google+ hangouts to chat and play. It's a very cool way to do things and seems to work better than a mic (I'm using a pair of PX21s, but my friends don't have anything special).

Level 17 soldier looking to play got a mic as well....

I was wondering will I unlock trophies while playing online ie. finding new locations etc

I'm a soldier in the high 20s and I'm willing to play co-op with anybody. My PSN is the same as my user name JG5253 and I also have a mic
Level 17 soldier looking to play got a mic as well....

I am not positive on the locations, but I for everything else quest related it only works if you host.

I was playing with a friend online and we both unlocked all of our trophies together without a problem.

the only thing to be careful about in coop play is making sure you are both have the same missions active missions are concerned. You can usually play it safe by always letting the lower level character host.

If one player has a mission active, and the other doesn't- they won't get credit for the mission and in some instances can glitch out their game. This prevents them from completing certain tasks if they were present when you did it at spots later on in the game/dlc.

Even though I said I wasn't going to play it anymore after completely destroying it on the 360 I picked this up Monday night and am having a blast! Played for about an hour yesterday and got up to level 10, hoping to get my first class mod today and become the beast of a support system that I was last time.

I just downloaded this last week with all the DLC from the PSN store, yet despite the fact that everthing seems to be installed, the game does not recognize any of the DLC. I'm like level 27, and have access to the ustations, but they aren't listed... I've tried deleting the DLC and reinstalling, also deleting the entire thing and reinstalling and I still cant get the fucking things to be recognized... what the hell am I doing wrong?

Question: I have 2 of the EXACT same item, but one costs more. I read on some forums that there may be "hidden attributes" if the item already has 5 lines of text. Does anyone know how I can find out what they are (it is a character mod). The original is worth 8,000 and the other one I have is 18000.

Edit: BTW I'm playing on PS3.

You could check the borderlands wikia. I linked it to class mods section since I assumed that is what you meant by character mod. Usually if two items are the same (type) then one could be higher in price due to level requirement, different parts, stats, or even manufacturers.

Is it the same level? That might be the difference even if the stats are identical.

Also, I would assume that the more expensive one is the better one, everything else being the same.

I was talking about playing split-screen coop. And what do you mean about the active missions? I mean, I am playing way higher than my kids and so I've already done all the missions. It does seem to show whatever mission they have picked on my screen - but it shows them already completed of course. I'll have to try a few more since I don't think I've done 15 quite yet.

I dunno - I got all those other locations available for fast travel before I even had regular fast travel unlocked in the game. I just finished the Zombie DLC today - that one was pretty fun. At least it had different locations and visual style from the main game. It was a bit strange that it talked about Zed like you already finished the main game. And then when
you kill him in the DLC, of course he is still there in the main game ;).

Yeah, they are exactly the same except the price. Same manufacturer, same level requirement, same rarity color.

I am trying to dump the cheap ones that have lower stats, but I think I still have 12 or so, since I can not figure out which ones are the best.

If I have 3 points in a skill and the mod has +3 to the skill. Will I actually get +6 for the skill or is it capped at +5?

You would get +6 since class mods & skills stack. Menu won't show past 5 though, but its there.

Cool! Bloodwing will attack 6 times now!

Looks like the sequel has been confirmed (officially?). New characters, new environments, and new gear.

Sounds promising, here are my hopes for the sequel:

 1. Cloud Based Saving allowing you to switch from PC to 360 to PS3 and take your character. (i've got so many friends who played it on PC and 360 who would love to have played on PS3 when the price dropped, but didn't want to start over).
 2. Portal 2 style cross-platform play.
 3. Deeper Character Appearance customerization
 4. Ability to modify existing weapons with aftermarket scopes/barrels, etc, etc.
 5. Transfer data from Borderlands(1) in some way- I won't be super upset if I can't take my Roland along for 2, but it'd be nice if they'd reward me for it somehow.

I agree with all of your points except 4 because I think if they let you customize the weapons then you'll be less likely to pick up something new. Really want character customization and cross-platform play the most, though. I hate that 3 of my friends play Soldiers and all pick the same goddamn colo scheme as I do.

Yea- i could see it being abused (especially if the don't fix the item cloning glitch from the original), but it could be cool. I liked how it was handled in the last Ratchet and Clank game.

It seems like a logical step to throw in a few one-time use items that let you increase a particular weapons zoom, magazine size, elemental power, reload speed, etc, etc.

I wouldn't put them everywhere, but if you occassonally came across an item (like the current backpack or special ability elemental power-ups), it'd be kind of cool.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I would like it if certain weapons had an elemental customization option. I've had so many times where I've completely loved a weapon but am disappointed it doesn't have corrosive or lightning.

Edit: It has dual wielding? GREAT!
