Brutal Legend - Gen. Discussion & Info - Demo Out Now!
Well, this game has pushed me to the limit today. I was really really liking it alot. Untill the RTS crap comes up and it literally makes me not want to play this game.
It seems as if I keep getting my ass handed to me by Ophelia. I can just imagine how Dovaricus or how ever his is spelled is for the RTS battle. So I am done with this game and it is now going back cause of this stupid RTS battle
I felt the exact same way. I thought the game was fairly good (it had it's ups and downs), but once I got to all the RTS crap, I stopped and sent it back to Gamefly.

I like RTS games, but it's just not that great here. It's hard to differentiate who is your people and who is your enemy. The controls suck...etc. I loved the demo, and I was highly considering buying the game, but I'm glad I didn't.

Don't give up the ending is pretty cool and you guys are right at the end.
You do rts battle with ophelia then straight to another with the last guy and then a quick normal battle and your done. I agree that it's retarded and misplaced but it's not that bad on normal difficulty. Her battle is worse than his and the bridge was tricky with all the waves but just make sure you upgrade your stage right away and get the rockcrusher. You can rape with that while your army does the rest for you. Also facemelter is your friend just swoop in do it and get out while your guys fight.

I'd say it's a solid rental, nothing spectacular but fun mostly. I only got 52% completion and 235 achievement points lol I hate collecting shit and have no interest in the online.

yeah I beat this turd, LOL (only call it that because it wasn't the God of war/Conan kinda game I was hoping for but with HEAVY METAL) yeah story is cool and all, but the aimless repetitive side mission open world stuff grates on my nerves... Sunday it is going on ebay, unless someone here wants to make a trade or buy my pristine copy.

Bleh. I was all prepared to buy this until I found out about all this RTS nonsense. I like RTS's gameplay, but not when it's mixed with other gameplay. Oh well. I'll pick it up some day when it's cheap.

Poor Tim Schafer. This was likely going to be a flop anyway, but even the hardcore gamers are a little peeved with the gameplay...
Yeah I don't get all the hate for the RTS stuff, it's really not that bad (once I switched to normal difficulty from brutal).

Awesome game.
brutal wasnt even hard imo

also yeah the rts is really quite simple u just gotta stay with ur army and attack with them
u dont have to worry about splitting them telling them attack certain enemies or anything

How do you do the secondary missions where you car is on a lift? I got a gun, but I can't seem to fire it, and I can't split my troops up so when I order them to attack one bunch of enemies, the other bunch attacks and destroys the lift.

Think I'm over half way through the game. I just encountered the goth kids (Drowning Doom).

So far the game is a lot of fun. The RTS aspects aren't as intimidating and complicated as I thought they were going to be. Summon a rally flag and either keep it on you or plant it far up enough to keep the enemy from taking over your merch booth. Keep near your army and order an attack command every now and then and just help them beat the crap out of everybody.

Also, keep your army buffed with solos and if you can afford it, upgrade your stage and basic troops. Keep doing this and you'll eventually win.

But man, the Drowning Doom are ANNOYING to fight. They must have some crazy debuff to slow your attack speed or something. AND THEY JUST WON'T DIE. Feels like I haven't to continuously wail on those spider things for a minute to kill them.

Just wrapped up the single player and now going to mop up the rest of the achievements.

Overall, this game was pretty meh. It was horrid at the beginning as you learn to deal with all the 1/2 assed gameplay styles (no game needs driving, fighting, and RTS). After 1/2 way through, I learned to accommodate for the shitty gameplay and got through it pretty quickly. The RTS stuff is pretty weak - it basically breaks down to the 'build a giant army and send it in' style that was popular with warcraft 2, but has been replaced with games that actually involve strategy and unit management.

In keeping with that old school style of RTS, here is a tip for the people that are struggling with the RTS elements on Brutal difficulty. Get an upgraded thunderhog, 3-4 upgraded razor girls, and a rock crusher (fill out your ranks with fire barons and the flame dog things) and you can dominate the fuck out of anything. Razor girls upgraded en mass are super powerful and will let you rip apart anything the game throws at you. Also, use the battle flag solo and carry it around so all your new units come to you.

I beat the final battles with a rock crusher, 4 squads of razor girls, a thunder hog and some of those fire breathing things.

How do you take out those guys that throw up? It seems they can destroy my entire army. I always die when I try to fight them.

I just finished the single player today and will probably spend the next few nights trying out the multi. If anyone wants to play a match and doesnt mind someone who is probably going to be terrible, add me.

I tried the tutorial for multi and I thought it was pretty confusing. The RTS aspect kind of just hits you and comes out of nowhere which I didn't enjoy at all.

I had no interest in buying the game until I played the demo, and I got this game for "free" via trade-ins so I'm not to disappointed. This is a game you get for $30-40 when it drops in a month or two.

I really looked forward to this game. I LOVE heavy metal and loved Psychonauts but after putting a few hours into the game, I feel really let down. I enjoyed RTS games on the PC but they just feel out of place in this game. The charm just isn't there like I thought it'd be. I'm going to end up selling this pretty quickly.

I'm starting to think I'm not going to be able to finish this game. It kills me to say that, because this was one of my most anticipated games of this generation, just because it's a Tim Schafer game. I'm not even a heavy metal fan, but I love the world, the story, the dialogue, humor, voice acting, all of that is exactly what I expected: excellent.

The RTS stuff, though..... God, I HATE it. I don't play RTS games at all, have no interest in them, and the real stumbling block- I don't understand them. If it was just something I didn't enjoy doing, I could slog through to get to the parts of the game I like. But I just played the big battle in LionWhyte's arena for about a half-hour, confused the whole time about what I was supposed to be doing, where my troops were, why they sometimes seem to go where I point them and sometimes not (I know you need to be near them for them to hear you), etc. I died over and over again, and got to the point where I wanted to throw my controller through the screen. Not fun. I can't advance the story any further without completing this battle, and there are no more side missions for me to do at the moment. This sucks. I know, I know...... :-({|=

Just needed to vent a little. I feel a tiny bit better.

This might be able to help you out; it helped me. Basically, once you find the balance between commanding and hack 'n slashing, it becomes pretty easy. And I'm playing on the hardest setting (and I blow at RTS games).

http://www.doublefine.com/news/comments/battle_time/
Reading through that, it sounds like a lot of the tips are things I was already doing, except for the part about not staying in the air outside of the battle a lot (I was usually doing that to try and get an idea where my troops were or where I was supposed to be going myself) Maybe I'll start to get the hang of it; I will read through that again before the next time I play. Thanks very much for the link, I definitely appreciate it.

There are only a handful of RTS campaign battles, so I wouldn't give up just yet. Use a guide and find some of the tab slabs scattered about to learn new guitar solos, specifically "Recall Flag" and "Rally Army," those two are immensely useful for the RTS parts.

I finished Brutal Legend recently, and I really enjoyed it. I liked the RTS parts and didn't find them bothersome at all, the only complaints I have with the game is the lack of variety with the side quests, and that it's also a bit on the short side.

So I am really not feeling the RTS elements of this game and I'm looking to get rid of it. I purchased it last week from the Best Buy buy 2, get 1 free deal, and I know I can't go back in the store and swap it out for a different game at this point. So, fellow CAGrs, what are my options? Am I just limited to trade in's or Ebaying it?

After discovering I had no "current" game to play, my brother in law offered to loan me this while he's busy with Tekken 6. I wanted to get it back to him ASAP, so I was curious as to how long most people took to finish the game. Is Brutal difficulty unlocked from the start? How much harder is Brutal than Normal difficulty?

So I'm near the end of the game and I'm stuck. Can anyone help me out?
I'm at the fight that takes place right after Ophelia reads her little poem. I know it's one of the last fights of the game, but I'm stuck.

I destroy the 2 towers on the bridge and I can't seem to get a single minion across it to start taking out Ophelia's stage. They have this tree thing and a hot air balloon that just keeps annihilating my guys. The tree in particular keeps raping them Evil Dead style.

Enjoying the game for what it is. The music is great. The art is great.

I cannot stand the whole armies RTS aspect though. I think its an interesting meld with a hack and slash style of game, but I dont think the execution is all that good in regards to that particular mechanic.

I rented it and am glad it was not purchased.

Beat it this weekend.
My fault was not using the big level 3 vehicle with the lighting sword attack to take out all the enemies in front of the two towers first.

The soundtrack is pretty epic and the only reason this game would be worth $60. It's fun, but it's short and online multiplayer is dead before it ever really began.

It's a great game. I just don't think it would be nearly as interesting if it were a straight hack n' slash game - the RTS elements make the game feel original and unique.

Finished it last night. I enjoyed it but I liked Psychonauts more. The RTS stuff got on my nerves a little bit.

I just tried multiplayer and got obliterated every time. So much for getting matched up with someone who is your skill level. I would enjoy it if I could win maybe 20% of the time.

Some new DLC came out for 400 points, "Hammer of Infinite Fate."

You get ... Oculus of the Lost, a Deuce upgrade that shows every collectible on the map, as well as new outfits for Eddie, some patches, some new rock heads, and four new multiplayer maps, and some new deuce weapons.

The Oculus takes up your secondary weapon slot on the Deuce and visually points to nearby serpents, legends, metal forges, buried metal, jumps. It works well and really should have been in the game from the start. I spent like the last 2.5 hours just searching for stuff and I'm still not done. Some of the stuff is in plain site, but man some of it is hidden up small paths or hidden behind/understuff.

From what I've played and read online, the mutliplayer part of the game works, but is broken gameplay-wise, which is too bad, because it's so creative and unique.

I'm tempted to get the new DLC just for the Oculus, but maybe I'll wait until I feel like playing through again. It is irritating that it wasn't in the game in the first place.

Sweet. Haven't gotten the game yet (hoping it'll appear under the Christmas tree), but I'll be sure to nab this from the get-go so as to get all the collectibles in my first playthrough.
Why is multiplayer broken? Other than nobody plays it. The matches I have played were fun.
I just used the word broken because before patch most people played IronHeade and played in a specific way that is very unlike how the game teaches you how to play, or the enemy AI plays. If you played long enough and spent time on the internet you could find some very specific ways to counter them, but I think most people just thought "This is dumb" then never played multiplayer again.

I was just reading on the main forums and I guess the recent patch did some thinks to help fix the game and people were actually complaining about the other 2 factions, which is always a good sign.
Does anyone have the six degrees of Shafer achievement? I'd like to get it.
Play ranked and as long as you get matched with different people you should get it very quickly. If you have problems getting it, you can pm me and I can give it to you sometime ;)

Sweetness, thanks for the tip, waka!

Sorry for resurrecting a 16-month old thread but I would hate to go too much OT in the Amazon Prime Deals thread :)
How did you play through Brutal Legend? I turned it off and put it at the bottom of my stack of backlog when I got past the "Metal Queen" spider or whatever to the first "tower defense" RTS part. This game seemed like it had so much potential. I love metal and the whole theme, but I don't know. I guess I just don't like RTS.
I came back here looking for help in this section and found this thread. I followed the tips from the page that someone posted from Double Fine's site and that helped me play through it.

I liked Brutal Legend from the start; the environments, the sounds, the metal tracks and of course the characters. But when I arrived and defeated the Metal Queen, I stopped enjoying it for a while. I can't really explain it but playing the game started to feel like a chore :whistle2:k I began to enjoy it once again when I reached Sanctuary of Sin; I found that battle to be very fun. I finally finished the game early in the morning, I was pretty satisfied overall.

The RTS elements of the game were easy to learn. Some of the battles pissed me off because it took me 2 or 3 tries to beat 'em  Once you find all the guitar solos, upgrade your axe, and unbind many, many serpents, battles will become way easier.

I'd recommend it, especially at the current $8.99 Amazon is selling it for.
Just scored this for $5, I'm stoked to play through.
I really enjoyed this game. I loved the world and writing. The design and writing off all the individual units is great. The other 2 factions play like different factions, they aren't just clones of Ironheade.

I liked the RTS elements, but I also liked Herzog Zwei a lot, which what the RTS was originally based off. I'm certain multiplayer is dead now. I liked the concept, but didn't really think multiplayer against human opponents worked very well.

Anyhow, I think the game is a steal for $5.

Amen to this game easily being worth $5. I think I got it when it was $20(?) and even if you never play the game and just have it running for the music, the soundtrack itself is worth it.

+1 it's one of best licensed soundtracks for a game ever if you like metal. :D

I finally got to this game on my backlog, and I'm not sure if I'm enjoying it or not. Reading the reviews it looks like a love it or hate it type of game.

I've gotten up to the first major RTS part I think. I just got wings and floating around. I couldn't win that first battle after 2 tries and gave up. I'll try again tonight, but I'm not sure on this yet.
