Buy Rite got owned.

fuck YES. I ordered an SP and about 6 Megaman Bandai model kits right when the SP came out. A month later my mother had to bitch to them everyday to get them to send the SP. (Still waiting on the model kits over 2 years later)

My first order long ago, PSO and a keyboard, came. My second, SA2B, Sonic Adv and a GBA/GCN cable came.
But third time for me was the charm.
I think the owner just bit off more than he can chew. Seems the online entity was a rather good site and he made very poor decisions on how to run it. At VGD it took me a few years of slow growth to start doing 100 orders a day and not feel like it was too much for my staff. We were very organized and rarely had problems. Buyrite seemed disorganized and to boot the owner was a greedy dick who jerked people around instead of making his mistakes right. Sometimes customers are ripping you off but sometimes you have to investigate to make sure of this before just telling a customer to F off. We did a fair amount of refunds for customer that we knew were in the right. I don't think buyrite ever did that. They seem to be fine with the chargeback and making customer get all pissy. It's sad too because his site wasn't that bad imho.

Can't say I am unhappy at all to see them gone. I am suprised it took this long though.
I agree with everthing you said. I bet he tried having an online component without hiring staff solely for that purpose. I work in a college bookstore and I have to serve as cashier, order supplies, order software, take out trash, process payments AND process internet orders. This is during the rush as well. We really need to have staff dedicated for that alone instead of me trying to do everything in the fucking store.

Not familiar with this store, but they sound just like this guy I bought from on eBay once (or tried to buy from on eBay):

I won an auction for a book, and tried to PayPal the guy his money. PayPal told me that his account was closed, so I didn't send any money. I e-mailed the guy, and he didn't reply. Out of courtesy, I gave him 7 days. He never replied, so I left negative feedback. His feedback shortly before, and shortly after (he only posted auctions for 2 weeks after mine) was all negative. I figured that the guy was a deadbeat (he had a checkered past with feedback, but I figured I would take a chance anyway) and since I didn't lose any money, I never gave it another thought.

I just found out a few weeks ago (a year after the auction) that the guy was dead! He had automatically set his computer to post auctions for that month, and he died at the beginning of that month. Weird... :(

You negged a dead guy? Wow, that's something to put on your resume!

Back in 1998 when I was traveling through Raleigh, NC I stopped at the B&M store and at the time, it seemed really cool. I mean it was small and all, but they had so much cool stuff there. Japanese items and import games. I made a few purchases and left with a good feeling about the place. They did seem disorganized though, but I just assumed it was because they seemed so strapped for space. I even placed an orderr with them around 2000 and got it without problem. I think that was right before they went to hell. My friend then placed an order with them like 6 months later and had a terrible time with them. Can't remember if he ever even got his items or a refund. I agree that they bit off way more than they could chew...thats still no reason just to fuck folks over. Karma man...it came back to get them.

i still remember the old days where Buyrite was the "shit."
They had pages of import selections on back of GameFan magazines..

I remember getting my first hands on import FFVII from them..

too sad they are out of business..

It's about time those loser go out of business. But, can't believe it took so long. I remember seeing their site online at least 7 years ago and their service sucked as much as it does now.

I've made two orders from them both arrived, months after I had FORGOTTEN I had made the purchases. So I can understand their terrible service.

Overall, it's a day of rejoice for consumers everywhere.

I feel a investigation is in order. I have worked at a local place that might explain the buyrite ordeal. the place I worked was awesome to work at and the owners and everyone was real nice then they sold it. we saw the new owners assist one time, and from there on. it when downhill till it closed. this might be the story to buyrite. A local person owned it back in the N64, DC, PS1 days. then sold it and some person who owns 5 or 6 little local places just stuck people in there and told them to work, never came in and checked on the place or nothing. and probably some teenager who kinda knows HTML and java was doing the website. If the AG is in it, someone going to face legislation

lol...saucy bought from a dead guy..that's freaking funny

I bet it happens all the time on ebay. They should make an FAQ addition before you leave negative feedback.

Please confirm person is not dead

Well, looks like no more moaning from newbies about this site...

Wasn't there a time in the past when they were good though (say, pre-2000)? I too remember the recognition they used to get, even an entry in an import store guide in EGM. But that was back when Tronix was primarily an import game site and one of the hottest around...

So long Buyrite, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.
bout damn time. I hate those fucking bastards

I used to order stuff from Buyrite (Saturn games mostly) and never had any significant problems, except sometimes it would be delayed in shipping for a few days. One time I ordered Samurai Showdown 4 for Saturn, and they explained that their only remaining copy was an open display copy, and sent me a free game as an apology of sorts (it was X-Men Children of the Atom) (This was around 1997-98) I stopped ordering from them when I started to hear horror stories. My theory is that they were once a decent company, but at some point may have went under new management that took them down the toilet.

I bought from BuyRite one time and have hated them with a passion ever since then. They were a terrible company, and I'm glad they're gone now.

I had good business with them too, i ignored the warnings, because I was buying a htf item from them.

Anyways glad they are gone :) now if someone would do something about tigerdirect :(
Wow, it took this long?
You would think that the major credit card companies (i.e. VISA/MasterCard) would cut ties with this business, given the number of complaints I'm sure they received about non-delivery. Yet, it seems they were allowed to take credit card payments until the very end.

Score one for the consumer. And as someone who was ripped off by them before I knew better, fuck YOU, BUYRITE DICKHEADS!

Whoa, no "shaq-fu"?

who cares about Buy Rite...love the sig!

I remember waaaaay back when Buy Rite was a pretty damn cool place... when they were still located in that crappy flea market mall place on Capital Blvd. This was back in the days of the well-meaning (but horribly edited) Die Hard Game Fan magazine. In those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. "Gimme 5 bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now, where were we? Oh, yes.The important thing was, I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time...

Oh, wait. Anywoot, I used to make the 2 hour drive to Buy Rite at least a couple of times a month. That weird guy with the slightly offensive mustache (Mark?) was still a decent guy back then... haggling was still an option, if you can imagine such a thing. I remember scoring their last sealed copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga for around $30, and feeling all warm and fuzzy about it.

Later, of course, the employees would become unbearably ass-y. Even worse, most of the inventory utterly failed to bear any indication of how much it was actually selling for, meaning you frequently had to stand in a long line just to have the privelige of asking a rude counter monkey how much they maybe wanted for the scratched-up copy of Kamen Rider for Sega CD in the generic plastic case with a rubber band around it. The short answer: it varied according to whom you asked.

Ordering online was even more depressing. As much as I wanted to convince myself that Buy Rite was still a decent place, the absurd shipping charges and not at all user-friendly policies beat any last vestiges of hope right out of me. In the end, I suppose Buy Rite has finally joined Die Hard Game Fan, the Sega Saturn, and The Critic in that sad, sad place where good ideas gone horribly wrong go to die. Requiescant in pace, Buy Rite.

Can't say this is shocking news, in the period of a few years i've heard nothing but horror stories about them. Kinda surprised people are jumping out in this thread saying they had a good transaction at some point.

Honestly I'm shocked it even took this long. Buyrite started going downhill back in the summer of 1997 with their ridiculous shipping delays and prices online. I couldn't believe people were that desperate to get import titles they would go to such dumps like this place. I'd say R.I.P. but that would be too nice for the grief this place caused some friends of mine. Good riddance.
I would like to think that it was BuyRite's winning of the Cheapy Award for Worst Online Retailer that ensured their demise.
Me too. Another example of why you should never undestimates the power of CAGs. :)
I have to agree that it seems weird it took that long for the NC Att. Gen. to do something about Buy-Rite.
Yeah, definitely. Better late than never, though.

Thanks! :)

Proof? Since when can computers "post auctions" for you?

Oh gee, I remember the 6 month delay in my order a couple years ago, the numerous long-distance phone calls I had to keep making for them to finally ship my order....wow. Thank God they're gone.

There is a ton of ebay seller software that does stuff like that automatically. Look into it.

The horror stories I read here were the first I had ever even heard of Buy Rite, so I was spared the headache of trying to business with them. Glad to hear they won't be screwing anybody else.

I bought a few Japanese Sega Saturn games from them back in 1997, order went fine. I do remember calling to remind them to ship my order out. That was my only order placed with them, and by the look of things, I'm glad.

I bought a few Sega Saturn import titles from them back around 1998, received them on time, and they were brand new, sealed. The only complaint was that the converter I bought along with the order quit working, so I exchanged it - three times. They were very good with sending replacements, and the shipping was cheap, as were the prices (at least $20 cheaper than everyone else). Strange that this company would morph into the horror stories I've been reading.

i had similar experiences on ebay with some guy selling .01 games and i didn't read the shipping and it was like 15 dollars to send a disc only PS1 game and i asked for him to send it priority and he wouldn't do it.. always wanted to get something from buy rite but never did.. glad i didn't

Same here. Some of the games showed up with cracked cases but otherwise delivery was prompt and no problems whatsoever. However, things went downhill after that as a friend of mine tried to buy from them and had one hell of a time navigating through their voicemail system, then all the horror stories started showing up all over the net.

The most evil thing about BuyRite is how they knew they had a bad reputation so they'd place ads in magazines (and Ebay auctions) with different company names so you wouldn't realize who you were buying from. Of course, many of us learned not to mail order games from North Carolina!

But I took a risk and bought import Star Soldier for GameCube from them on Ebay. It arrived fine, even though I expected it might not. 'Course, I've emailed them questions and never received supplies, so I fully believe they are the devil.
'Course, I've emailed them questions and never received supplies, so I fully believe they are the devil.
What kind of "supplies" did you want them to send? :)

Add one more crime to their list: They also spammed me constantly after my one order with them, despite my trying repeatedly to get myself removed from their list. I think there's a lesson for all of us to learn from BuyRite, though. Obviously, a very large number of us ordered stuff from them even after their reputation started going down the crapper. I, for one, have since been much more diligent about investigating web sites before ordering anything from them. BuyRite was such an awful experience that it has made me as cautious as I should have been in the first place. If a web site has a poor reputation, or you can't find enough information ABOUT its reputation, then just don't order from it, no matter how good the deal you're looking at might initially seem.

Definitely good advice. One site to keep in mind is http://www.resellerratings.com when investigating an online merchant.

The multiple times I ordered from VGD were problem-free, defender. Which is why I ordered from there and stopped when you were done with it.

Haha, good riddance, suckers.

I'm too tired to give the details of my order, but I'm proud to say that I filed one of those
Better Business Bureau reports that helped bury Buyrite (wow, that's some spiffy alliteration).

If the owner was the guy who voiced their phone system, hopefully this will prevent any other gamers from having to hear his voice again. He sounded like a low-class, crooked used car salesman.
