Congratulations to the entire CAG community as we beat our goal of $40,000, raising a whopping $42,810! Thanks to all who participated including our great corporate sponsors Play-Asia, Telltale Games (Tales of Monkey Island), Capcom (Dark Void), and Blueberry Muffin Tops Cereal.

Original post
In 2008, CAGs raised over $32,000 (up from $27K in 2007) for Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity. This year, let's see if we can hit $40,000 before the year is through.

For every $5 donated via PayPal through the CAG ChipIn system, you will receive one entry into a raffle to win a $500 Amazon Gift Certificate or other great prizes! Last year, the CAG Community donated some really cool and generous prizes and I'm sure the tradition will continue this year. I expect the prize list to grow and grow until the very end of the fundraiser.

You must donate through the ChipIn system or your raffle entry will not register. Use any of the ChipIn links in this post or the widget below. Just click the "ChipIn" button to donate. Donations are accepted via PayPal and go directly to Child's Play. ChipIn tracks our donations as a group, but the money is immediately deposited into Child's Play's PayPal account.

Hey guys, good job. I brag every year about this gaming site I go to how we donate a shit ton of money and I wasn't disappionted this year. Happy New Years all and go CAG!!!!

Quick question: How does Cheapy do the raffling? Is there a site where you just throw all the names in and spits out a random name?

Not going to get into specifics, but even if you don't win, the contribution is not fully deductible. It is computed based on an "expected value." As a really easy example, if I make a $100 donation and I get a ticket into a raffle with only 100 other people, and the winner gets a $5,000 shopping spree, I am deemed to receive fair market value of $5,000, multiplied by my 1% chance of winning (FMV of $50). My donation is reduced by this $50 to get to a net tax-deductible charitable donation of $50. I am not saying that people don't deduct the $100 all the time when "purchasing" raffle tickets (which is exactly what we are doing), I am just saying that if the IRS came in, they would take your # of tickets, divide it by the total number of tickets (presumed to be $42,710 divided by $5/ticket), add up their determination of the FMV of all the prizes available, and multiply your % of tickets by the FMV to arrive at the non-deductible portion of your donation.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but I figured I would just let everyone know the honest-to-goodness tax treatment of the situation. Excellent cause, and I gladly donated to it, if only for all of the money I have saved over the past few years. The least I can do to repay everything this site has done for me.

If that's the case, I don't think it will impact many people much if at all. My donations made up .25% of the total, and throwing out a likely very generous value of the prizes at $5000, leaves me with a FMV of $12.50.

I imagine he writes names down on little slips of paper, puts them in an enormous top hat, and draws the winners randomly.

Old school, yo.

Old school, yo.
Yeah, but Mrs. Cheapy has to stand on a ladder to hold the enormous top hat over his bald head so he can't peek.

He takes all the emails from donators and puts them in a huge excel spreadsheet, for each 5 bucks u get another line in the spreadsheet, he then uses random.org to pull the number and whoevers email is on that line wins, thats how he has done it in the past atleast

Example
Donor 1 donated 15 bucks
donor 2 5 bucks
donor 3 10 bucks

2 [email protected]
3 [email protected]
4 [email protected]
It isn't hard to contribute considering all the cash saved on games from this site. Just think if everyone kept a record of all they saved from this site in a year and donated half.
well, i figure i dont save any money with this website. i end up spending way more than i probably ever would if I didnt find all these deals all the time, lol.

Actually, super programmer john created a program which does the entire raffle automatically. I'm just waiting on ChipIn to provide me with the list of contributors.

The list is so large, I can't just get it off their site in the usual way.

Thanks for your patience!

Hey random.org seems kind of cool. I'm going to have try it on my phone when I get the chance. Then I can just book mark it and use as needed. Sad but true I use the coin flip app a lot on my touch.

Yeah, no e-mail for me . I think super programmer John just created a program that picked him each time. He is a super programmer :D.

Only the big prize winners have been notified so far...the complete list will likely go up at some point tomorrow.

~HotShotX
You laugh, but I'm kind of hoping for that one.

I won one, I just don't know what yet. I rarely win anything, so this should be good...Whatever it is, it will be coming back twofold when I donate for next year's drive.

Whoever does win the Blueberry Muffin Tops Cereal must do one of 2 things:

1. Invite us all over for breakfast (and have breakfast with the creepy ones that actually show up).

-OR-

2. Post pictures of them having breakfast (BBMTC) with either the real Wombat or a life-size cardboard cutout of him.

~HotShotX

It's the 13th of the month, and NOTHING yet Cheapy?? Damn man? You need some help on this, throw me the list bro, I'll get this thing done!

Sorry suckers, I am the proud owner of a case of BBMT cereal now. I have a feeling my wife and kids will eat it all before any CAGs can get at it ;)

I wonder how much Kinko's will charge for a life-sized Wombat printout for the breakfast photo...

Wait...don't you have to sign in to paypal using your email address???
And isn't that the email they used for the raffle?
I'm confused :???:...how did you have an old email?

I used my gf's email because I had some problems with ebay/paypal a few years back with people doing chargebacks causing my email to get blocked..

But cheapy emailed me! woo!
