******** Cag NFL 2k5 league thread - New and Improved!!! ********

Sorry craven...couldn't play tonight. I had a horrible headache coming home after basketball. I'll be home all day tomorrow though. I'll be getting my NBA and MLB league games in as well.

I had a set time of 8 pm PST to play against Gaelen (New Orleans) tonight and he never showed. After waiting 1/2 hour, I gave up. Let me know when you can really play....

No problem -- just pm'ed you.

Well, I played Amusedtoe tonight and during the third quarter, it came up with a network error that killed our game and nothing counted. He was winning 21-0 and I'd like to make sure he gets the win for it.

Same thing happened last night in the game between gaelen and me. It booted us in the third quarter. We just replayed it. Servers must have been wonky last night.

Good game, Minnesota...I'm so sorry about Moss, man...and also, on that last drive, I'm sorry I didn't take a knee earlier to avoid your safety getting injured also. I only do run plays so you don't have to sit and watch the clock run down.

Again, good game.

No worries, hes a tool anyway. (the safety) As far as Moss I kinda had a feeling it would be something serious. But heh, not like its gonna ruin my season. How many picks did you end up with?
Good game though, i just could never get into the rythm.

4. And I don't really know how. In fact, I think all 6 picks that happened in the game were just strange. The two I threw were bad passes, but they were picked off of tips. You were obviously trying to go deep to Moss, but out of numerous tries it only worked once. For some reason, my poorly rated FS was ALWAYS in the right position to pick it. I think Moss was taking a game off? :)

More Culpepper it seems, everything was underthrown. But you did have the right defenses called so Kudos.

While I am still fired up about this season, I thought I would look ahead to (hopefully) our second season. Here is my wish list, if you will:

1. Difficulty level of All-Pro rather than Pro -- more realistic, easier to stop the run, makes the kicking game more challenging.

2. Keep the good rules the Commish instituted for this season -- no QB runs, no rushing with the DTs, no running the clock out prematurely. I thought each of these rules was important and worked well.

3. Exclude, say, the top 3-4 teams from the league -- while this hasn't been a problem so far, I think it is more fun if no one has the Patriots, Eagles, Steelers. That way, no one wins just by having the far better team.

4. Make the quarters 7 minutes rather than 5 minutes -- in a few games this season, my opponent has held the ball for the ENTIRE first quarter. This is pretty unrealistic and frustrating, to boot. I think 7 minutes (assuming everyone can invest the time) would be better.

Again, I have really enjoyed this league. I hope we can continue with more seasons in the future!

Ideas sound great for the next league. I especially like the one about changing from 5 to 7 minutes. One suggestion I have for the next league is to have owners pick teams from last place to first place just like how a draft would go. If that isnt something that could be liked, how about at least each owner pick a new team to change things up and let others have a chance with different teams. Hope everyone else can think up things to improve the league and get it to perfection.

Santurio/Ramo Z- I'm doing some stuff later today but I should be available for the next couple hours and later this evening. I have nothing scheduled for tomorrow during the day, either.

I thought somebody might beat me to the punch. Yes, this week was supposed to be the week of looking ahead to next season but with my life an utter mess and CAG not fairing much better, Ive yet to get to it. Glad its been started though. You ll see more soon.

M

Ps. Dial up sucks.

And since Im here, let me play devils advocate for a bit. Its not to say your ideas are bad or ill conceived, they arent. But, there are some possible issues with some of them.
1. Difficulty level of All-Pro rather than Pro -- more realistic, easier to stop the run, makes the kicking game more challenging.
Im leaning towards this change as well. However, we do have many owners who are of a more "pro" level in abilty (this is one of many games they play) I hope that they can make the transition smoothy and this *early warning* will help them prepare. However, Ive not ruled out staying at pro just yet. Ive got a few more things to settle before I can say definitively we are making the change.
2. Keep the good rules the Commish instituted for this season -- no QB runs, no rushing with the DTs, no running the clock out prematurely. I thought each of these rules was important and worked well.
You can rest assured that all the rules are staying in place. Also, there will be more added due to things that have shown themselves this season. My plan is to set up some discussions on the league board (which, by the way, this should be on the suggestions thread there ;)) so we can work together to hammer out what we want to do and which direction we want to go.
3. Exclude, say, the top 3-4 teams from the league -- while this hasn't been a problem so far, I think it is more fun if no one has the Patriots, Eagles, Steelers. That way, no one wins just by having the far better team.
I know exactly why you want to do this but there are 2 problems.
#1 Anybody can cheese with any team. Its easier with say the top 3 or 4 but there are many sleeper teams that are easily easily exploited (hello Texans)
#2 It really sucks if you are a fan of a certain team and you cant play as them. Take me for example, Im a buffalo bill through and through. It would be lucky for me that my team wouldnt be cut. However, Phlly, Atl, NE, and a few other fans wouldnt fair as well.
#3 We have eq which balances things moreso than if we didnt. No, its not perfect. NE is far stronger than Chi or Ari. But, it is more balanced.
#4 A truly skilled player can beat somebody who just takes a superteam without much difficulty. Usually these people have 3 or 4 "tricks". Once you shut those down, they struggle mightily.
Again, another thing that has a 99% chance of happening. If you remember the league originally started at 7 but I dialed it down so I could be sure you guys would be able to handle it (if you cant play 5s, we're wasting our time trying 7's. It slows down the game, makes mistakes not as detrimental and leaves more chances for comebacks. The negative is it takes more time to play games. I dont think the extra minutes should be a problem though.

Im glad you are enjoying yourself. I hope everyone is. Those who are not feel free to LMK what I can do to make it better. Many of you have already taken me up on this offer and I hope all of you that want to, DO!

Mike

Aye the Giants, Bills and Bengals are at the top of the leauge right now and from the quality of a Philly or Indy so it's all in who's playing. Personally I like taking a so so team since it makes the game more fun having to work harder.

Something else Ive been meaning to address:

Start using the league website!!!

While I love CAG this is not the best place to conduct our league business. Yes, its a tool we have but it shouldnt be the backbone of our communications. First, its been iffy as of late. Im sure it will be more solid in the near future as cheapy works out the bugs but right now its not super dependable. The league site hasnt gone down once. Two, we are cluttering up cheapy's webspace and servers with stuff that isnt very "Cheapassgamer" oriented. We have our own space, and we paid for it when we bought our games. We should use it and leave cheapy's space for cheapy things.
Three, this is ONE thread. You cant imagine how difficult my already semi laborious job becomes when I have to search through 19 pages of things to find ONE nugget of info somebody had on something that I want to go back and check. If we use the League site, its organized and at most I have 3 or 4 pages to go through. Make my life easier, and make it more likely you ll get your concerns, requests, etc. answered.
Lastly, it helps keep everyone better up to date because most of us get a daily email about the goings on at the site. So on the days when we cant/dont check CAG, we still can be in the loop since the emails give us a small synopsis of what has gone on recently.

So, in conclusion, lets get in the habit of posting that the league site. In order to help in that goal, Im pretty much going to stop posting and especially answering on CAG. Yes, its tough love but in the long run we all will be much better off.

M

P.s. And if you cant get into the league website for some reason, LMK and Ill try to help you figure it out. If you gotta make a call to xbox, do it. Yeah, it sucks but I cant hold up progress for special cases. Sorry.

I've tried to see what your schedule is like this whole week but you haven't replied to the PM's . I don't get home until 7:00 P.M. Central Mon-Fri so anytime earlier is a no go for now. I am available right now if you have time, if not then tommorrow after 7 p.m. would work.

I've replied to all the PM's I've received. At times, however, the site does not work. I still haven't seen you on here or Live.

There have been a couple of PM's you did'nt reply to until like a day or 2 later. But I am not blaming you for our game not being played, especially this past week since CAG was all screwy. We just need a better way of setting times and days for the League games.

Yeah, I could see that I had a new PM at times, but the boards would be down and I couldn't read it or respond. I hope you're on tonight... I couldn't get on earlier because I was busy with family/holiday stuff.

As supa has been trying to convince everyone to use the videogame's site for league stuff. This is a good reason why it should be used. The site had been pretty unreliable for the last week or so, so by using the league site, you 2 would've been able to get your game in sooner, rather than later.

We did. We contacted each other several days ago via the site, but nothing ever got done.

Now I have a loss tagged on my record from a game I would have won, a decision which seriously affects the playoff race.

Bleh.

To whoever I'm playing this week...I will be back at school and able to play (my xbox is there) late on wednesday night or anytime after that. I've already told supa that if I I'm late, I'm late, and to just forfeit the game. But if I make it, I'm going to be eager to play.

Later.

This week (Week 6)I play Zewone and I just wanted to let you know I am available Mon - Thur from around 6:00 P.M. Central until about 10:00 P.M.
Friday's are iffy but workable, let me know when you want to play our game!!

I feel I tried more than my share of times to get a hold of you through private means, without actually posting on the public board. Then you posted in this thread trying to call me out, so I did. We set up times, we changed times, we sent messages that weren't answered. You set up a time that I agreed to and showed up for, but you didn't. I don't know why supadupa gave me the win or if it was a coin toss decision, but you trying to say it is my fault the game wasn't played is just....well not cool.

I wasn't blaming you. We both tried contacting each other, but I never once saw you online and apparently you never saw me. I didn't say it was your fault, just that I was bothered by receiving a loss when I had a good chance of winning. 4-1 and 3-2 can make a huge difference in the playoff race. I had been informed that you had problems with playing games in the past, but I'm not going to make assumptions without really knowing your or supa's side of the story.

So, uh, how does one go about adding someone to an empty slot in a league? I Had to drop someone from the MLB league.

The person you're inviting to join must register with the ESPN Video Games website. You can then send an invitation via the PM system on there.

Good game Sgs89 even though I got killed. Man I really wanna know that damn play you used that was unstoppable where you hot routed or something and no matter what play I used couldnt stop you guy crossing the field. Hell, it was 9/9. I dont even need a 9/9 play, I need an O line that can not get me sacked 4 times in my first 6 plays.

Were you playing the Colts? They have some insane cross patterns.

Any cross pattern is an easy interception if you user control a man in a dropped zone defense in the middle, though.

I was playing the Seahawks, at first I just picked plays and switched up D's, then I had to keep people over the middle in zones cause he'd use that play more often but nothing came close so I went to user control on a linebacker and then got killed deep (even though it'd be like double coverage down field). I think I stopped about 3 passes that game. But that cross, that seemed to be something that was hot routed cause he did the same thing every time, was nuts. Just wish when I'd drop people into the exact type of zone I need, that it'd work. Its like playing smart doesnt beat certain things. Oh well, at least I did alright against the run. Now I just need to know other things like how to stop deep passes, cross passes that seem unstoppable, break through other peoples O lines and get sacks (didnt have one whole game, he had 4 through my first 2 times with the ball). Teach me folks lol.

Let me guess? Wistrom got you?

BTW, how do you do that coverage audible to double a receiver? You pull up the icons, press the receiver you want doubled and do what else?

And I have the Colts. The O-Line seems to collapse and the receivers get bumped easily so it throws everything off. I can barely get 3 step drops on some teams. So you can imagine how useless those deep crosses are.

First you press the button corresponding to the defender you want to use in the double team AND THEN the WR you wanted defended.

Gomer, usually setting up a manual double team from a zone man on the outside on the deep route stops it easily unless max passing is on, in which case you're $$$$ed if it's done correctly.

Good game, Gomer. Hasselbeck was H-O-T last night, what can I say? I've never had a game where he was that dead on.

The momentum swung in my direction early and I got a couple of quick stops. Nice job on that final drive, though. I bet if we played again it would be a lot closer.
hit up your PMs, gomer.
Um, I dont have any new PM's, old ones that I read on the old system, I had those but nothing new.

Let's start scheduling these games so we can flip the schedule by this weekend at the latest. Let's go, people!

I've got someone who wants to take the Eagles. I'd like to talk to supadupa about that and the decision in my last game, but he's nowhere to be found. :whistle2:\

I hope he's okay. Also, we need him around to maintain the league. This has been really fun, but after what happened with my last game and the whole situation with Philly, I need to talk to supa. I'm getting frustrated, and also I'm kind of worried about supa since he tends to be on every day and he's not now.

Also, Maximo- When can you play our game? Sometime in the next few days would be best because I'm likely going to be out on Friday and I am going to Los Angeles for WrestleMania 21 this weekend.
