This is a thread for the top Sega Saturn games. I loved that little system, and I'd like to see if we could come up with a top list for this system.

Everyone name your favorites and I'll post then all for a vote. Then, we'll count the numbers and see what wins.

Rules:
1. Must be a Saturn game of course!
2. Must ONLY before the Saturn (Exeption: It was a better version by far, EXAMPLE - Marvel Super Heroes vs Xmen.)
3. It can be imported or US.. doesnt matter. Go crazy!

Hope this doesnt kill the thread: 165 of what I think are the best Saturn Games of all time.

True- but most of us who own a Saturn either have:

1. A Jap Saturn
2. A Converter from www.ncsx.com or other source that allows us to play US & JAP games.

By in large- the Jap games beat the hell out of the US releases. I bought the system because of the JAP games- there are a few good US releases... but not many unfortunatly. Sega of America didn't support the release of this system like they did back in the Genesis days.

Fire Prowrestling S: Six Men Scramble
All Japan Pro Wrestling featuring Virtua
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Collection
Elevator Action Returns
Assualt Suits Leynos 2

What about games that have been ported since the Saturn and are the top versions?

Capcom has ported every single Capcom Generations game, as well as a good chunk of their fighters, same with SNK, into definitive versions on the PS2.

What's left in my collection, barring a few games, is what I think are the best Saturn games, the rest are just kind of meh. I'd say I still need to pick up:

Dragon Force
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
Radiant Silvergun (waiting to see if Treasure ports this one, they already ported their top 3 Genesis games to PS2).
Cyberbots
Waku Waku 7
Some random shmups

But that's pretty much it.

Radiant Silvergun
Capcom Fighters (4 meg cart rocks)
Dracula X (it has several different features than the psx verison ..but also some slow down :( )
Panzer Dragoon
Dragon Force 1+2
Langrisser Series

God there were so many good Saturn games. Here are some of my favs:

NiGHTS into Dreams
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Dragon Force
Tempest 2000
Guardian Heroes
Virtual ON!
Saturn Bomberman (Import - I think that one had the UFO Catcher in the multiplayer mode)
Fighting Vipers (Import for Pepsiman!)
Fighters Megamix
Shining Force III
Decathalete
Virtua Fighter 2
Sega Rally Championship
WipEout (sense of speed was much better than PSX version)
Super Puzzle Fighter II
Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With You
Baku Baku
Sonic Jam
Sonic 3D Blast (I liked it, at least for the soundtrack. Sucks there was no save for it though).
Duke Nukem 3D (for the NetLink gameplay - yes I have a NetLink - and for Death Tank Zwei!)
Going John Woo style back when it meant something in Virtua Cop 2

So many good memories of the 32-bit era...

Jeremy

Fire Pro Wrestling - Six Man Scramble
X-Men vs. Street Fighter
X-Men Children of the Atom
Thunder Force V
Virtua Fighter 2
Fighters Megamix
Daytona USA Championship Edition
Sonic Jam
Street Fighter Alpha 2

Mortal Kombat II was AWFUL on the Saturn...the load times especially. Ultimate MK 3 and MK Trilogy were good though.

For some reason I liked Mr. Bones. Don't know if I still would today though.

I did NOT have a converter/modded Saturn so I didn't get to play the Jap-only games (a friend had one though, so I was able to get in on Fire Pro and X-Men vs. SF).

Oh, and until the 360 wireless came out, the (later) Saturn pad was the greatest gamepad of all time. And it's still the best pad for fighters.

X-men Child of the Atom
Burning Rangers
Virtual On
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Nights: Into Dream
Christmas Nights
Guardian Heroes
Panzer Dragoon

Necronomicon Digital Pinball.

THE finest pinball game. I could spend hours playing it and never get bored.

Not to be a jag, but you have a large cross section of Neo-Geo games on your list. Most of which also had arcade perfect Dreamcast ports.

Is it your contention that Twinkle Star Sprites for the Saturn is better than the version for the Neo or for the Dreamcast (since your rules basically say for it to make the list it has to be the definitive version of the game)?

If so, I couldn't disagree more.

I believe the TSS Saturn version was better than the Neo Geo one... it got rid of the slowdown, added characters, all sorts of fun stuff.

The DC one was very bare bones.

There is a comparision FAQ for DC vs Saturn TSS on GameFAQ's, it's very well done.

The Dreamcast version wins out on a lot of important points, notably the load times. The FAQ leaves out a monsterous point, in my opinion, which is on the DC you have VGA box support. In order to get straight RGB out of the Saturn you'll need a SCART enabled tv or an upscanner. Otherwise you're stuck with S-Video.

I do tend to feel things out on a graphics, gameplay, sound basis and the Dreamcast version has greater visual range (a VGA box is a more common periph than an upscanner), better audio and no load times. It's more important to me than color trails that the characters leave. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have it all! But if given a choice, that's how I choose.

Even if the point of TSS is debatable, then you still have games like Magical Drop 3, Waku Waku 7, Bust-a-Move 2, your KOFs et al. I've never played Magical Drop 3 on the Saturn so I really don't know. I have played Waku Waku 7 and I think it's a poor conversion at best (graphics and audio).

Any and all of these can be debated. Which is fine, I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong, I'm just saying I disagree. Someone can say they like the Saturn version better because they don't care about the things I care about, and they'd be well right.

My point is, if the criterion is it has to be "a better version by far", then in order for it to make the list... it shouldn't be a close call.

To me, that wording would indicate that this version be superior to all others, in all catagories. By such a standard, the load times alone in the Saturn version would discount it. My argument isn't to unseat the Saturn version with the Dreamcast version, my point isn't to prove that the Dreamcast version is better than the Saturn - from my end of the argument, that's not necessary - I'm only pointing out that if the version isn't superior on all fronts, then it can't be considered the ultimate version of the game.

Again, not trying to be a contrarian jag... just trying to go by the spirit of the conversation.

Other than the load times, I think the Saturn version of TSS has to be the better of the three based on the improvements/additions over the original. The graphics weren't all that great to begin with, so not having VGA doesn't discount it by any means.

That's cool, but...here's what I'm getting at.

Okay, for Version A to be far and away better than Version B/C/D/E it needs to be 'the definitive version'.

That's sorta my point, or actually, it's even my question.

Okay, now like I said, the three main points listed for the Saturn version (additional characters, graphical enhancement, slowdown) aren't as important to me as the points for the Dreamcast (VGA, loadtimes, audio) - mostly with the VGA and loadtimes.

So let's just isolate it to two items, we'll say Enhanced Graphics and Loadtimes, right?

We can line up people and ask them which version they'd prefer by those two alone, and you'd get an even split (you certainly won't get an overwhelming majority for either).

I don't think anyone will disagree with that.

You can do it for each individual point and find a reasonable split.

Even if you don't think the graphics of TSS are that great, VGA is really important to me (it's important to a lot of people). You don't try to get RGB because a game has better graphics, you try to get RGB because it helps the graphics of any game.

Now, I'm not saying the individual points of a game are more important than the the whole sum of the parts. BUT, again, to make my point I don't have to.

To validate the point I'm trying to make, I don't have to prove the Dreamcast version, on a whole, is better than the Saturn version.

I just need to prove that at least one major, irrefutable aspect of the game is better on the Dreamcast - which I believe is the case, and I believe it is more than one.

If the DC version is vastly superior (as I feel it to be) in several important aspects to the SAT version - then the SAT version as a whole, can not be vastly superior to the DC version. The SAT version can be better, the SAT version can be preferable, it can be a lot of things. Just not the definitive version. I shouldn't have said "better" in my first post, since it didn't really convey my point. Sorry.

Again to re-iterate, this is all semantics. My point of the first post was to try and guage exactly what the measuring stick was.

Any suggestions on what to get next or what to get rid of?

Wow, I'm impressed by all of these Japanese game collections. I bought a Saturn on day one from Babbage's - $399 including Virtua Fighter, along with Daytona USA. I only had U.S. games, so my contributions to this thread won't be quite as good. My favorites were:

Sega Rally Championship
Virtua Cop 1 & 2
Virtua Fighter 2
DecAthlete
Daytona USA
Panzer Dragoon 2: Zwei
Shining the Holy Ark
Nightstalkers
Street Fighter Alpha
Nights into Dreams
