Week 16 Recap:
If you ruled out the possibility of this being the craziest weekend in college football all year long, you had to be surprised at the upsets that occured. Not only did #2 Oklahoma get beat down by Missouri, #3 Florida State managed to lose to Miami, as well, leaving the unlikely title game contender to be the only other remaining undefeated team, Boise State. Texas is the new #3 with Arizona State and Georgia filling up the rest of the top five. The entire Top 11 (minus Ohio State) was shuffled around because of this and it seems like the rest of the championship games messed with the bottom half, as well, leaving a chunk of middle teams that played it cool this weekend in their safe spots. Ranked teams in the Top 25, Tulsa and Alabama, both lost their games, sending them both out of the Top 25 and everybody else up a spot or two, along Bowling Green to make their ranked debut and Michigan to reappear for the first time since they were embarassed by Ohio State a few weeks ago.
The upsets don't end there, as this week was also the week that the Heisman Award are tallied up and a new winner is crowed. Knowshon Moreno's been a bit lackluster in the second half of the season, compared to his first half stats, so it seemed like he would coast into the Heisman on stats alone, but the assumed runner-up, Florida State WR Preston Parker, ended up taking home the award with quite a landslide of Moreno. Matt Grothe of South Florida was the 3rd place in votes with Christian Ponder of Florida State and Graham Harrell of Texas tech following up with the fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively.
This is also the week of the year-end NCAA awards are handed out. Despite his runner-up finish for the Heisman award, he still took home the Maxwell and Walker awards. Relevant wins include Ohio State's Rory Nicol winning the Best TE award and Ohio State's James Laurinaitis winning Best LB.
Finishing up the award week festivities were the handing out of All-American picks. Ohio State saw three players make the National All-Americans 1st team (Chris Wells, James Laurinaitis, and Donald Washington) while South Florida saw two make the list (Matt Grothe and George Selvie) and Florida State earned the most with four picks. The 2nd team National All-Americans included LSU's Keiland Williams, Penn State's Derrick Williams, and South Florida had two more picks (George Baker and Cedric Hill) while Ohio State earned three more picks (Steve Rehring, Malcolm Jenkins, and Ray Small). South Florida's George Baker also made the National Freshman All-American team.
Here are the totals for All-American picks in their respective conferences:
Ohio State: 13 1st team, 5 2nd team
Indiana: 3 1st team, 2 2nd team
