CAGcast #116: Blown Off

Brave lionheart is spot on. I love the DS and was very excited about Nintendo's new console. I even told someone that if the Wii is half as good as the DS it will be awesome. My PSP collects dust and I have now come to resent buying it, as a result I have held off getting the PS3 because I was so disappointed with the PSP and I don't regret that decision.

P.S. Hey Wombat, saw you at ComicCon.
I used to know a guy who masturbated while watching porn.
Are you serious!? Well that's a new one on me.
Lair - I'm surpised that Wombat likes this game, I enjoyed it too, but I felt like the way they just copied and pasted the Rouge Squadron formula into this game, perhaps, they didn't take Lair too seriously. It's like the game is a spoof. That's just so unfair to do that to a new franchise. They have good characters, good story, maybe the dragons could have been more than ship types but charaters too, (i.e. like the Tachikomas of Ghost in the Shell S.A.C)

with the DLC for GTA IV , do you guys think that its going to be anything like the previous DLC that the series has seen. Not DLC, expansion. Remember in the early days of GTA there was a London expansion pack. which basically turned the city into 1970 London city.

Warhawk - you guys are much too hard on Warhawk. you say its missing something, but you don't even know what it is. Maybe it could use more weapons and a Call of Duty 4 type system. It should have something to work for.. something to make you want or have to come back. COD4 is a FPS RPG in the way you gain experience and additional weapons. Maybe Warhawk would benefit from that type of set up. I still think that you guys should enjoy it for what it is.. a simple online multiplayer shoot em up.

on second thought, the maps are so damn big, they could have more team based missions. protect the convoy dog fight, etc.
Apparently Warhawk is getting new modes when the 1.4 patch comes out. I saw that somewhere...
I don't get the hate for Warhawk on the show, though. There are no games that really emulate the Battlefield experience from the PC (at least on the PS3, I don't know about 360) like Warhawk does. Just because you like COD4 doesn't mean that Warhawk is not good. If anything, it DOES feel cohesive to me, because you can do anything you want, and transition smoothly from jeep to tank to on foot to Warhawk. Jump in, grab a gun, and start kicking ass. You choose the way you want to go. Much more interesting to me than COD4, where it seems like everyone is doing the same thing. I own both, and I have definitely put way more time into Warhawk. Getting some achievements in it might help, though!

I will definitely give Lair a try, because I've never played a Rogue Squadron game. Last flying game I played was X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, I think. I fly Warhawks with motion control, though, so I might enjoy the motion controls in Lair. I do think it looks kind of ugly and muddy at times, though, from what I've seen.
Are you serious!? Well that's a new one on me.
i played Uno with some dude and he had his Live vision cam showing him rolling pot. he then showed us his cell phone video of his GF giving him a BJ. that was weird.

I dont know what happened. About two weeks ago I put a nice thick review on Itunes for the CAGCast and I went to look for it now and it's not there. WTF. Any ideas?

No Cagbag? I am extremely annoyed. See, I live in Europe ( I know...) and I also have to get up super early, and I cant catch a show at 1 in the morning. I'm not asking to cancel the show, or change schedules, or record the thing, just have the cagbag in the regular podcast. Sorry if I sound like a douche

Wombat, did Sid Meier look into your soul?

And really? Comic-book podcasters giving the hardest working man in videogames that kinda treatment? They're on notice!
Why does this episode crash my Zune? The last 4 or so episodes didn't but the ones before that did.

I want to listen it..!
Seconded, it made froze up my Zune too. I had to reformat it into .wma to make it work. :bomb:

Funny thing about the Xbox Originals, Splinter Cell, specifically. I bought that game from a local Gamestop wannabe for $2.95. Certainly better than the $15.

All I have to say is if a show is going to be delayed, you guys truly know how to make it up to us by giving us Battle of the Planets opening music.

I can see Cheapy and Wombat forming the best 2 man whirlwind pyramid ever.

Don't worry wombat, if it comes to it we'll round up cags and flame their site...just kidding.
But he must have been intimidated, and he may regret not rubbing the wombat belly...

Great Cagcast as always, cheapy and wombat
p.s. where do i sign up for the wla?

I just checked their site, they would probably love the attention.
12 comments on the day's entry, when I checked.

Gah! Thanks a lot, guys, your podcast kills my Zune every time I try to play it. :p I dunno what's wrong with it, but my Zune doesn't like this latest episode. Other episodes, it likes just fine, but this one it doesn't. Ah well.

Also, woo! I got mentioned in the 'cast. I can die a happy man.

Great show. And Wombat, sorry about the iFanboy thing, I really enjoy their video podcasts, so that kind of puts a damper on it.

Also, if you want to plug another comic book podcast AND please your new coworkers, check out Comic Book Queers . I'm not gay, but I noticed they were one of the people nominated for a podcast award last year, and since I was starved for podcasts for my work commute, I checked it outand it's actually pretty good.

I forgot to meantion Mortal Kombat. I think that series is pretty much dead. Do you guys think the series is dead? I do, and I really think that adding the DC Universe is a way to moreso save MK, rather than make good use of a new license. I'd love to see a DC Ultimate Alliance, or a game like MK: Shaolin Monks. Shame on you Ed Boon, I know you love MK, but damn, maybe its time to let it go. I read that they wanted to cross up with Street Fighter.

Cheapy had a good point in saying that MK didn't have a good fight engine, it was more so about the fatalities and in my opinion it was about the violence, the blood, the stuff that's now common place and not so much as novel (or shocking) as it used to be. Fatalities were fun, but the only thing that can give a fighting game longevity in the business is a good fighting engine. What they should do is ask Sega and AM2 to let them borrow their fighting engine. -- Instant Hit!
So how does it look?

The only reaction I've had to the screenshots released so far is mild nausea.
like an up-res version of ultimate destruction...the hulk model looked a little too crazy though. still if it's anything like UD it's a first day purchase for me

Welcome back, guys!

Wombat, that really bites about iFanboy. They've been my favorite comics podcast for a long time, and they always seem like nice guys on the show. You live and learn, I guess.

Cheapy, I'll check out the live show on Thursday, but I don't like the idea of dropping the CAG Bag from the regular non-live show. I always like taking the CAGCast in my car when I'm going places or listening to it while I jog, and the CAG Bag is a big part of my fun while I'm running or driving around. People will always have something to say in the CAG Bag, so I don't think you need to worry about any premature wad-blowing on Wombat's part. You'd have plenty of material to cover on both shows, I'd imagine.

Shouldn't we vote for the other three members, maybe Speedy?

Ok, I usually don't argue with what Wombat says, but I have to comment on his Pokemon Mystery Dungeon remarks:

1. This game is part of the rougelike genre. It's a genre you either love or hate, so I can understand not liking it. But you related it the main Pokemon franchise and you can't really compare the two; it's like comparing Mario Golf to Mario Galaxy. It's two separate genres.

2. Yes you press A to attack most of the time. One of the characteristics of a rougelike game is the basic attack. However, there's also multiple special attacks you can choose from so don't make it sound like you just perform one attack the entire game.

3. No attack animation? Every normal attack and special attack has an animation Wombat! Pay attention! It's not unpolished at all.

4. About the story...do you not like it because it's the average Pokemon story, or did you not like it because you were upset you had to read something? I didn't really understand that comment.

I'm not really a big fan of Pokemon anymore, but I really like this game because it's a great rougelike game. It's especially good for beginners to the genre or people that may have been thrown off by the difficulty of Shiren the Wanderer. Wombat may not like it but I recommend it if you're a fan of the genre.

I'm also mad at Wombat for making Cheapy end the show early. Next episode better have a ton of PA game bashing to win me back over.
hey wombat,

for what it's worth, ifanboy is officially on my shit list. what a bunch of douchebags.
Yeah it crashes my Zune also. I have the 80 GB version with the latest firmware. Not sure what they changed from previous episodes to this one but it definitely has a problem this time.

To be 100% fair it should be comparing the downloads to newcopies of the games. If you could find them, I'd bet they're still selling for $10-15. But since we're not getting a disc or packaging, I agree with Wombat that $10 would be the fair price for these.

Wombat, I just want you to know that you now have 2 fans. I have recently decided that you are an overall better person than CheapyD and my new favorite host. Keep up the good work. (PM me on payment)

good show guys. Regarding the ratings system, Im a big fan of the BUY IT, RENT IT, SKIP IT system. You can throw in a 4th rating like a CAG SPECIAL, for a game thats worth buying at a discounted price. The GTAIV dlc is probably going to be the 5th bourough, Staten Italy. Btw Wombat should have told that comic book geek he was a fockin douche bag to his fockin face and then flipped him the bird. Thats what I would have done, ok Im going over there now.

Hey folks, I'm Josh, the aforementioned dick/douche/general rude person from iFanboy.

I sent Wombat a much longer note than this, but I wanted to get my name at least partially out of the mud, were that at all possible.

I was, for all intents and purposes, working at the New York Comic Con. We shoot a video show, and as such, we're constantly waiting on, searching for, and shooting interviews and pieces. If I was in the Marvel booth, then there's a good chance we were trying to get someone's attention following a signing, or waiting for an interview we'd already set up. Lord knows there's no other reason to stand in that horrible miasma of people in the Marvel booth. As such, if I excused myself, and came off as a lot more rude and abrupt than i intended, I'm indeed very sorry.

I've met many listeners and viewers of the shows we produce, and I'm always glad to meet people. Not a one of them (I hope) will say I was a jerk. Socially awkward at worst. I remember meeting Wombat, and I remember having to go do something, so I couldn't talk that long. I can't imagine I was so rude, because I very rarely am such, and I remembered his email, and writing back to him. However, I can certainly see how it could be misconstrued that way, and again, if that's the case, I apologize. Profusely.

Anyway, if I've learned anything about being a presence on the web, it's that you shouldn't ever respond, and you shouldn't ever get into fights, and it only makes things worse. But since I feel like Wombat really feels legitimately slighted (hence naming the episode after the incident), I want to try to make amends. Intentionally or not, I don't wish to make anyone feel like that. So here I am.

Also, if you must paint me as a "douche" that's fine. In any case, it's my mistake, but please don't paint my partners with the same brush.

Douche

I think the downloadable cities for GTAIV on 360 are false because there are 2 DLC episodes. 1 is believable, but 2 is a little out there. As far as we know, the first one is coming out this fall, and presumably the second next year, meaning, they're on the clock.

This also goes the same for Take 2, as they are on the clock from EA. Multiple downloadable cities would take a lot of time and resources that Take Two doesn't need right now, and quite frankly, doesn't sound like Microsoft wants that DLC more than the game itself.

Wombat, I've been meaning to post on here about another Comic Book podcast you might want to check out and right now it seems like you might be even more open to it.

Comic Geek Speak puts out a crapload of podcasts every week. They have different styles of shows ranging from interviews, mini-reviews, in depth single book reviews, comic book movie reviews, to just geeking out about comics and geek culture. It turns out they are local to me and I have actually run into some of them in every day life and they have always been incredibly open to talking to a "fan."

They have created a group of forums at The Comic Forums that host sub-forums for a bunch of other podcasts, artists, writers, etc. I *believe* the Birds of Geek girls actually met on the Comic Geek Speak forums. They both show up in various discussions on the forums and the show.

I've never listened to the iFanBoy podcast but as a part of Revision3, I always wonder if they have too much going on to really interact with their fans the way that you may be able to. I like Revision3 programming, but I see all of that stuff on a different level than what you are doing. CAG is about the community and what is going on in these forums. Revision3 is a network producing shows. I think most of the people are "talent." Passionate about what they are doing, but still doing a job.

I like to think that if I saw you on the street and said "Thank You" to you you would stop and actually try to have a conversation with me. I think it would actually make you smile that you had someone appreciate you in person. I think a Kevin Rose or Dan Trachtenberg are to the point that they wouldn't even think about it because they get it a lot.

In any case, sorry you felt blown off like that. I hope that you listen to and enjoy Birds of Geek and that you try some other more independent podcasts.

I have to say this is actually really classy, Josh. And it kept me from just saying stupid things about your show in the post above. I'm tempted to give your show a listen after seeing you care enough to stop by here and post this comment. CGS and The Uncanny X-Cast typically give me more than enough comics podcasting goodness, but I think I'll supplement that for awhile with some iFanBoy and see what I think.

CheapyD, any chance of you recording the live show?

I love your shows, but I'm not a fan of having to be around a computer at a specific time to listen to them.

anyways, good to see that the iFanboy guys aren't actually douches. i enjoy your shows. all's well that ends well.

I have to give credit to ifanboy guy for posting and giving his side of the story.

Also, I doubt GTA 4 will have exclusive cities. My guess is a second story kind of setting that has a new character going through a story arc in Liberty City with some nice cut scenes, new items, building, etc and 250 achivements points.

Yeah, OK .. I have to go over here now.

I must give the "investigative journalism in the field of video game pricing" award to wombat yet again. Wombat, you consistently ask the hard questions about the pricing of games that no one else has the balls to put forth!

In all the interviews you have done, including those at ComicCon, you ask the developers/marketing people about why they choose to make seemingly substandard games full retail price. These questions are refreshing and new compared to the bullshit interviews we see at other sites - I don't give a flying fuck if your game has 40 person multiplayer, I want to know why it costs more than 40$?!

You are the hardest working man in the game industry, keep up the excellent work.

Great podcast as always.
In all the interviews you have done, including those at ComicCon, you ask the developers/marketing people about why they choose to make seemingly substandard games full retail price.
What's really sad is that there are so many games I wouldn't mind purchasing at a lower price, even if they were substandard, but that I will ignore because they are priced far beyond their own quality. By the time they come down in price, I've already forgotten about them and moved on.

It's in their own interests, knowing that they didn't put the work into a title that a Rockstar or a Bungie or a Konami, to price them relative to those standards.

Does anyone really intend to pick up Iron Man at the same price as GTA IV?
people are having sex when the CAG cast is playing? wow
Apology Accepted, 100%!!! I am glad to hear that it was just a misunderstanding and let us all put this behind us. iFanboy is really great show and a great website as I have mentioned on the CAGcast many times. That being said, Hellblazer as a comic does nothing for me, and there is a never reason why JSA shouldn't be pick of the week every week it comes out. Now for those who havn't yet go listen to iFanboy and check out their site www.ifanboy.com, the pull system rocks!

"Okay, I'm going to stand over here now."

That's not being "socially awkward". That sounds more like you feeling like you're above your fans, and would rather not interact them. Sorry, your explanation doesn't really cut it.
