CAGcast #131: A Monstrous Choice

Hey Cheapy & Wombat,
Great Show! At first I was excited about the NHL 09 announcement, but I have to side with Wombat. It's tough enough to get two guys scheduling a league, I can't imagine doing it with 12 guys---and God help us if they allow line changes, for three lines that would be 16 guys per team! My company can't staff two people on an ambulance, I can't imagine trying to reunite 32 guys for a full, or even short league. Hey, also for all of your user created content discussion, you left out the Grad-Daddy of them all----Spore! Spore looks to be amazing, there are already almost 2.8 creatures created by users online, now don't get me wrong, there's tons of "Sporn" floating around YouTube, but the majority of the stuff on EA's website looks legit and pretty awesome. Can't wait to get my copy in a couple weeks! Why don't you mention PC releases more often? I know you guys claim ignorance, but I mean just the major releases like the PC-only Gears levels including the Brumak fight, or like Spore. Just curious, keep up the good work!

sorry for the double post, edit that was 2.8 MILLION creatures created online since the launch of Spore Creature Creator not very long ago

MotionPlus? You guys seemed to be confused about the difference between announcing a product and releasing a product. The product was announced in July. It won't be released until next Spring sometime. That's ~9 months from today.

I hardly think the tech is finalized enough at this point so developers can cram it into games coming out this xmas.

And I doubt most of these developers have enough free time on their schedule to suddenly incorporate this tech into their xmas games. Many games being released in the next few months are feature complete.

If LucasArts is mad then they should just delay their game until spring and release it as a flagship MotionPlus game.

Great Show as always. But you all are complaining about not being able to trade or sale downloadable games and if they are wroth $15. I have been mainly a PC gamer from 1998 and I know the feeling. A PC game normally cost $49.99 and if I make a mistake when buying a game I can't trade it in or resale. It is also the same thing when I buy a game off Steam or Direct 2 Drive. When I see people complain about paying $15 for a downloadable game I kind of laugh a bit. Try paying $50 for a game that has a bug that doesn't even allow you to start the game(Im looking at you Frontlines: Fuel of War!!!!).
Isn't Two Worlds supposed to be a long game at 20-30 hours? Does that mean it's a good game?

Metacritic: Two Worlds

Whereas Braid is about 4-5 hours...

Metacritic: Braid

Games should never be judged solely on length or price. You have to take all the components into consideration. Games are all about the experience. Short games like Braid, Heavenly Sword, etc. worth playing just as games like Final Fantasy XII, Mass Effect, and Persona 3 are worth playing.

If you have fun playing the game, then who the fuck cares how long it is?
You missed the part where it said to me. I give a fuck as to how long it is.

Hey Wombat
I just listened to your comment about Warhawk, and I agree. But I think it's bigger than just Sony not bundling a headset. I think that the expectations and just the online gaming culture of PSN players vs XBL players are different. Many PSN players were PS2 players and historically had little need for their headsets and have been slow to use a headset with PS3. XBL's chatting has always been used for good and evil from day one. BTW Pain will be the source of my first PSN trophies, sadly.

Nice show guys. It made running errands today a lot more bearable, but I have a few comments about your Wii topics:
Wombat sort of dodged the Lucasarts controversy by saying he felt no sympathy for the company based on something completely unrelated. Nintendo really screwed over their third party developers (who take a lot of crap as is) by keeping this hidden, since it almost guarantees there will be no other motion + games besides Wii Sports 2. I'm sure if this was any other company, or a group of different companies, Wombat would be much more vocal.

Furthermore, gamers will continue to buy Nintendo consoles after the Wii, since Nintendo always offers early adopters a unique experience. Nintendo 64 had Mario 64, Gamecube had Rogue Squadron at launch, and more importantly Melee and Pikmin two months later, and the Wii had Wii Sports and Zelda. Every launch has an excellent system seller, and something people have to try. I'm sure Wii2 has a unique feature and first-party game (with a few more on the way), it will sell just as many systems as it's predecessors, followed by another drought when the promises end.

Finally, I just thought I'd mention that the karaoke party went rather well, although I did get some criticisms from someone's drunk uncle over my rendition of Last Train to Clarksville (although he was giving everyone feedback).

Dang it, Wombat and all his gifts and free codes...

Is it me, or does Wombat have an air of giddiness and joy that was missing from last week's show? ;)

Yea, I finally picked up Uncharted and played through it and thoroughly enjoyed it so I would also recommend you rent it or pick it up used Wombat.

Cheapy I have a question about your discussion of Condoms on the show. So let me get this straight, you have been married for, what, 4-5 years, and you already have Tai, so what do you need condoms for? Do they not have the pill in Japan or are you hiding something from Mrs. Cheapy? :whistle2:o8-[:shame::evil:

BTW, another great show!

I think this just needs to be reiterated since posts have come after this putting Nintendo down for this announcement. In fact, is not announcing it 9 months in advance actually giving developers time to consider incorporating it into games that come out after it does next Spring? Nothing coming out this Fall would work anyway since no one will have the device then!

(But granted, this should have been part of the hardware from the beginning - it certainly would have cut down on a lot of the grief over tacked on "waggle" in many Wii games).

As for the whole Wii collecting dust thing - well, I've actually been playing a ton of Wii games recently and my 360 is the one collecting dust now. I see no compelling reason to turn it on - maybe when Vesperia comes out. I've got the Fable Pub games code sitting here but just go "meh" when staring at it.

I've been playing Final Fantasy Chocobo's Dungeon which is actually a very hardcore game once you get to some of the tougher dungeons. My kids are enjoying Endless Ocean and I have several other games I just picked up (Battalion Wars 2 is another "hardcore" one) thanks to that 25% off Wii games coupon at Gamestop.

Hey Cheapy, why dont you fly friskytanuki to E3 next year, or maybe add a picture of him to the Cagcast logo? Will all the listeners there has to be someone else that has "Good" questions.
and all this time I thought people liked our show....

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=331779
Damnit Wombat! Take PRIDE in your skepticism and cheapness! :applause: Those idiots are just angry that you don't suckle the same teat of BS that they do.

Don't be Dennis Dyack! There's a reason we're Cheap Ass Gamers and the people at NeoGaf are gafs. Besides, how could you listen to people who didn't think that the Pizza Guy story was hilarious?

Wombat, you liked that part of Superman 3? When Robert Vaughn's sister got sucked into that computer, it scared the shit out of me as a little kid. I saw it in the theater and had nightmares. Other than that the movie was crap, that was just creepy.

I missed the discussion on LBP, but man was it really that bad? Wombat is belligerent? Christ. The game hasn't even come out yet and there hasn't been a demo. That's like arguing that The Dark Knight was fantastic when you haven't even seen it yet, but keep arguing anyway because someone else keeps telling you it's awesome.
You mean they pulled their heads out of asses long enough to listen to the cagcast?
[ NUT (neogaff) SHELL ]

After listening to the dinn of Neogaff's nascent podcast, none of their fans have a right to complain about the quality, sound, writing, or the personalities of the Cagcast. From a technical standpoint, their sound is poorly engineered, has horribly unbalanced modulation. Their performances are awkward, and project the inexperience of never having taken a public speaking or broadcasting course and being thrust into public performance against their will. They've got nothing on Cheapy and Wombat who have become comfortable with the microphone and can present a familiar conversation as a performance without it sounding forced or awkward.

If the Gaffers edited out all the laughing at themselves and incomprehensible cacophony when they talk over each other's comments, their podcast would only be about 30 minutes long. I had similar sounding discussions about videogames while stoned out of my gourd in college - and they were much more interesting than a neogaffcast. Hell, we had roundtables about toe jam and frumunda cheese that were more entertaining.

Wombat gets too much hate, for some reason Cheapy can get away with stuff that if it was Wombat it'd be complained about.
Wombat = Immature
Cheapy = Jerk

People need to take this show not too seriously, its what makes it entertaining to me since both their personalities work well together. I find most gaming podcasts dull, and while this one is indeed highly inaccurate a lot of the time, its entertaining.

They weren't comparing podcasts.

No, it wasn't that bad at all - hell, I wouldn't have even remembered it at all if it didn't cause such a stir here. As for your second point, that cuts both ways. LBP is being lauded as the next great thing by plenty of people who haven't played it either ;).

Cheapy,

Regarding your discussion of downloadable games on this week show, have either you or Wombat ever tried Gamesharing on PSN?

You mentioned that it would be cool to return/trade your old downloadable games, and in a sense, that is what this feature is.

Each PSN game can be downloaded to 5 different PS3's, and therefore you can trade or sell your unwanted PSN games.

Some people find this to be a shady process, but it is in no way illegal, and Sony has done nothing to stop/prevent it from happening.

Your thoughts?
They weren't comparing podcasts.
No, you're right, they weren't comparing podcasts directly, they were complaining about the CagCast's lack of quality thereby making an implied comparison. I made a direct comparison, and it's accurate since I presented an actual argument. 3/4 of the fan posters on NeoGaff like to throw out an inacuracy charge and the rank and file just line up in formation. None of them bothered to list any inaccuracies, they just dismissed it out of hand without any proof or example. Hopefully other discussions on their board are filled with more knowledgeable posts and diligent argument.

I'm sure the guys at the Gaff are swell fellows and great to hang out with. However, their fans seem to be ill-experienced judges of character or quality in the realm of broadcasting (or podcasting, if you prefer). Cheap and Wombat have found a great niche between an overproduced, professional, or radio-like style and a mishmash of plebeian banter. The latter seems to be what the Gaff podcast fans seem to enjoy more.

Maybe the age of the audience has something to do with it. I'm a tad older than Cheapy and Wombat but not by much, so I enjoy their more sarcastic and facetious attitude toward the game industry instead of teen and 20-somethings wanting to take the industry and themselves too seriously. I guess before you have a wife, a mortgage, and kids, gameplaying can still be the center of your life. Must be nice, must....be...nice.

Great show as always guys.

However I do have a few comments. Everyone keeps talking about Denis Dyack's continuous tirades against his critics. I personally had no respect for the man's game designing skills ever since I read his name on the back of the box of one of the worst games ever made: Sega Cd's "Kriss Kross: Make My Video". I am not shitting you guys. Hit the link and go down to 3rd paragraph and see if for yourself. I can't find the link but I am very sure that he made the other "Make My Video" games for the Sega CD with the likes of Marky Mark and C+C Music factory.

Fact is Wheter Too Human Sucks or not (as I have not played it) the dude seriously need to shut the hell up as he is becoming more annoying that the guy that made that failure called Shadowrun. Both men couldn't take criticism and decided to lash out at critics and gamers alike. Like I need to be told how to like something. Video games are objective and some like it some don't but it seems the greater perception of this game is negative. However, I will rent it and give it a shot as I am not the kind of person to like/dislike something due to a review but rather through personal experience.

The fact he can't handle the fact that a large audience does not like his game gives him no right to make an ass out of himself in the public and the gaming industry. Coming from the guy who made the mentioned above games the man should have gotten a thicker skin than he has now since then as those games were far worse and are on EVERY "worst games" list out there.

What he should be doing is listening to people's complaints and working on patching the game and applying the feedback for the next three games (supposedly) in this series. He should also seek a shrink to deal with his self esteem issues.

Wombat, don't ever change. You are epitome of the Cheap Ass Gamer! Now about the $15 live games, I don't mind paying if the game is critically acclaimed like Braid. I think they should charge in relation to quality.

The thing about that neogaf thread is the vast majority of the postings were complimenting the show. The only negative feedback came from zewone. (How is Wombat controversial? I love the guy, but he is hardly a mover or shaker in the community. Last time I checked, none of his rants wound up on any of the big blog sites except his own. His opinions seem genuine and not out of some perceived need for attention.)
Hey Cheapy, why dont you fly friskytanuki to E3 next year, or maybe add a picture of him to the Cagcast logo? Will all the listeners there has to be someone else that has "Good" questions.
Sigh. I'm sure FriskyTanuki is a cool guy, but even with the minor typo I find it hard to fault his point.

Another great show! Thank you Cheapy and Wombat!

Regarding "western" themed games, I recently picked up a used copy of GUN for the 360 for $6.99 at EB, and I am loving it! The graphics, as Cheapy mentioned, are complete ass, but the story is great and it is so refreshing to play a game that does not take place in the future, or in a medieval fantasy world.

I am amazed that the western genre has not been used more in video games, especially when you consider that "the old west" has been used extensively in other media, such as film and literature. It would seem like a perfect match for video games.

"Long time Listener firstime poster" the sheet fold scar kicks ass love that you guys talk about being dads. My chick got one in the oven and its been cool hearing you and wombat talk about being a geek dad. Make me feel a lot less nervouse about it. Thanks and keep it up.
