CAGcast #133: Steal This!

Cheapy, from what I understand, this is why Captain Marvel = Superman (Wombat can correct me if I'm wrong):

Captain Marvel was originally a Marvel character that ripped off Superman. DC sued Marvel over this and won, and instead of letting the character fade into trivial obscurity they went ahead and adopted him, even keeping the name Captain MARVEL.

Sort of, Capt Marvel was created by Fawcett comics (which is why Capt Marvel lives in Fawcett city) and was sued by DC for being Superman clone. DC eventually bought the rights to the character but can only use the name Capt Marvel when in the comics, outside of comics he is Shazam

Do you just read Superhero comics Wombat?

Oh, good question! Wombat, have you ever tried manga?
Oh, good question! Wombat, have you ever tried manga?
Or anything outside just the standard DC and Marvel?
Robert Kirkman has a great super hero comic called Invincible going over at Image Comics and he also does an awesome zombie comic called The Walking Dead that I recommend checking out.

I like invincible, but I am a Marvel/DC fanboy.

:(
I think the Invincible is a more interesting version of superman and that the Invincible universe is a more interesting reimagining of the DC/Marvel universes.

Want me to send you some non super hero comics?

Hey guys.
I have always listen to you since you made about your 3rd or 4th podcast. i stopped listening at about 125 because I am making my own podcast. I think you guys are the coolest and i was wondering if you could give a shout out for my Podcast. Its called Podinfuni7um. It would be helpful to me and we also need more subscribers. Please send me an e-mail at [email protected] or message me on Xbox or PS3 at Flubber1479. I will be listening for a little bit but i am going to focus on my podcast for a while.

You Guys are the best. :D
R. What with all the controversy surrounding Spore's DRM and the potential for irate customers to be looking towards piracy as a way to get past these restrictions, it can't be a good thing for the PC industry as a whole.
Totally thinking the same thing when I was listening to the podcast. I was a big PC gamer but got sick of all the bs with trying to get games to work, people hacking, etc. I have been looking to buy a gaming laptop, but i see that things have gotten a lot worse with PC games. Too bad...

As for cheapy giving up when he is 40.. well... i'm 35 as well and most people I know in "real life" into gaming are 30-50. Most of whom have grown up with video games and never gave them up. I can see Cheapy getting bored of the venture and wanting to try something new though. I'm sure there isn't too many bald white prostitutes in Japan! He could make a killing! Ever seen midnight cowboy? ;)

kazaam.jpg

*Sulks that Shazaam isn't Kazaam.*

Fatalating Shaq would make up for the scorned childhood I had playing fuck. ;)

Cheapy if you think you're too old for cag, just know that there are 30 to 40 year-olds out there that earn their living by telling tweens and teenagers what clothes, music, and television is trendy and shoving it down their throats.
I'll stick for up Cheapy and say that maybe people in Japan and Taiwan are buying/importing US 360's for FF, as it may still be cheaper then a PS3.
Nothing like playing a 60 hour speech and text heavy game in a language you don't know. That's worth saving $100.
Nothing like playing a 60 hour speech and text heavy game in a language you don't know. That's worth saving $100.
And you can import it at least half a year or more after you could've been playing on the other system when it first came out, which is also a great strategy.

Just as a point of interest, FF13 will only be released on NA 360s. And on the off chance that they actually DO release the game on Japanese 360s, it wont be till a long time after the PS3 release.

EDIT: I know this has probably been said on this thread umptien times but it was TL;DR. :/

Cheapy,

You might feel different about what you are doing for a living when you reach 40. I just turned 40 and I WISH I could do something as fun as what you do for a living. It's not like the gaming community is getting younger. It's getting older too. Maybe segue to CheapOldGamer.com when you hit 50!

Or sell off the whole thing for big bucks. That is an option too. :D

Hey Cheapy,

In regards to your discussion about when you will be too 'old' to legitimately run Cheap Ass Gamer, I was disappointed by your response. Take a look at Jeff Green, for example: he has been in the video game business far longer than you have, and still remains a fan favorite at 1Up, and I'm sure will continue to be a fan favorite as he moves on to EA.

The current average age of video gamers is 29, a number that I am sure will continue to rise. The average television watcher is 50, and I believe that video games will follow along a similar path.

Cheapy, all in all, I think that you should continue to run CAG until it no longer becomes fun, regardless of your age. It would be very sad to see the website turned over to someone far less enthusiastic.

I was just trying to be a good friend, I guess this show should have been called "Cheapy's Bad Fact Day"

I would really like to view your crazy Singstar video clips, but you'd have to approve my PS friend request first, Cheapy, because I gave up trying to scroll through thousands of C-named users on Singstar Online. That thing's more overrun than the CAGbag forum thread.

I completely agree. The generation of the NES boom is growing up, and we're still into video games. It should definitely be until it stops being fun, not because you're worried about how you look.

Sure, the 14-year-olds will always be around, but look at the computer/tech business: there are always new young'uns getting into that kind of stuff, yet you still have respected geezers who are more successful with their podcasts etc than anyone else in that field. The young crowd doesn't laugh at the fuddy-duddies, they respect them.

I know you realize how sweet you've got it; there aren't many jobs that involve sitting around all day. Of course, if you were offerd a large cash payout that would let you retire for the rest of your live, I couldn't blame you for taking THAT.

ok well heres an ex comic book nerd chiming in. aquaman cut his hand off in the justice league cartoon so he could save his son but in the comic book he lost his hand to a school of pirhana ( which yes is dumb since he can talk to fish unless they were going for some kind of irony).

and shazaam is actually more like Prime ( malibu universe super hero ) than superman considering the real identity of each of those heros is that of a little kid. and i think shazaam is connected to mythology somehow either greek or norse i think it was greek.

the dc vs mk games is going to suck i dont care who you cram into it though it will be interesting to see the jokers fatality if he has one aside from that who cares.

btw if you all can cheapy/wombat give some early impressions on the new batman game coming out set in arkham.

I have to say i have been listening now for about 3 months and you guys are frickin awesome. You have such a great chemistry between you two that i can almost listen to you guys bullshit on a daily basis about random crap. I love how you guys bring the video gaming news to us in a different way than the other popular podcasts do. LAter guys

great show this week guys. i really enjoyed the various discussions about DLC and used games.

btw Wombat, i thought Shazam was much more powerful than you mentioned. i don't mind him in the game cuz he's actually powerful in the comics and he uses magic. the character that shouldn't be in the game is Catwoman. she's kinda lame, imo. thoughts?

ok... the kareoke thing needs to stop now..

ok in japan they say kareoke

in the usa is kareokeeee.

No they do not. You're not even spelling it correctly. It's karaoke. KA RA OH KEH. You shouldn't speak with authority unless you're sure you're right.

"Carrie Okie" might be somebody's name somewhere in the world, but it's not even close to the proper pronunciation of a singing activity. It's not even a mere switching up of long and soft vowels in order to English-ize a foreign word; it's like we made a NEW word because it wouldn't be English if we pronounced things they way that they're spelled (like almost every other language does).

You could make a case for it being such a widespread word that it's its own English word with its own English pronunciation (see: Notre Dame, Celtics, anime, manga, Paris), but that's argument for another day.

First of all, Pachter is not right a lot of time. He's only right when spouting out stuff that everyone knows. Pachter is still stubbornly on the PS3 is going to win the cycle bandwagon and has been since before launch.

In regards to new systems, thats really up to the market to decide. One of the two non-market leaders will jump the gun first, and everyone else will have to respond, whether they want to or not. Hopefully it'll be a little longer this time since both the non-market leaders want to profit a bit this generation before dropping the loss hammer on a new cycle.

The 10 year cycle of previous Sony systems was not a decision of Sony, it was the market making the winning platform viable for longer than normal.

I still think its funny with all this "average" stuff. Its like Wombat didn't know that words have multiple uses. Fair has even more meanings than "average" does...

Cheapy, you got some big time love on Major Nelson's podcast. He really seems to be looking forwar to kicking it with you at TGS.

Also, Cheapy, as long as you are making money and having fun you should still continue to do CAG. Who thinks it would be ridiculous, other 40 year olds who hate their job and never get to spend time with their kids. You sir are living the dream. My son just started Kindergarden and I moved my start time at work up to 7am so I could get off early and spend time with him since he goes to bed earlier now.

Cheaps, what are you going to do when you hit 40? go back to working for da man? sit in a cubicle? rejoin the rat race? you got a sweet deal man, and a sugar mama. You have to milk this cow till she has run dry. Just cause you are a manchild doesn't mean at 40 you start listening to society to get a respectable job. its not like you run a pornsite. you should be looking at how you can grow CAG not dump it.

Bravo, bravo. Well said. I can't stand when people give other people crap for saying a foreign word correctly. I always cringe when I hear Americans say "Capish" as if that was Italian. Or "Pran-toe" as if that was Spanish, but I just cringe and realize that it's the same everywhere. Japan teaches the kids to say, "Ha-ro" for "hello" and "Kah-nin-gu" (read: "cunning") for "cheating" (as in cheating on a test).
All countries say messed up things. I decided a long time ago that upon returning to live in the US after 2 years in Japan, I'm just going to say "Carrie Okie" as long as I'm talking to someone unaware of the proper pronunciation. Just less douche-E I guess.

I would say you (CheapyD) are an internet entrepreneur. Don't sell short your success. Do you have to do something 'serious' to earn the respect of your wife or something? Doubt it. I would guess that you could be sustained with this site for years. And that's the only realistic dream in working, to do something you don't hate. I can't imagine a gamer such as yourself finding something more reasonable, outside of a windfall type sale of the company. You'd still have to work for the site and maintain your pseudo-celeb status, right?

40 seems like a big number, like a turning point age. But people who are 40 often wish they could live like they were 30 again. Don't give that up. This episode could have been called "What is the release date on Cheapy's Midlife Crisis?" In fact, when you put together a Penny Arcade style game, I suggest that title. You could just use Commodore 64 Adventure Construction Set to build your game, then run it under emulation for the 360. I picture something RPG along the lines of Earthbound.

You're living the dream. Unfortunately, at the moment, your dream includes wiping several asses.

Good show guys. Wombat is correct on most things, as is usually the case.

And only five more years of CAG? Screw that, Cheapy, that's terrible news. Your generation helped define what gamers are, and I think in a lot of ways (especially if surveys of gamers' ages are to be believed) you guys continue to. Don't just give up on doing something you love just because you think other people will judge you for it. Or are you seriously looking forward to going back to commercial real estate sales?

Here's looking forward to the CAGCast in 2014 celebrating CheapyD's 41st birthday, with a special interview with game industry luminary Wombat, who's successfully killed thousands of terrible game ideas.

I think this is the second episode I've heard Cheapy say he doesn't want to be 40 and still having to deal with what, the Podcast, CAG site or games in general?? Man I'm 43 and I never plan to quit with the video games.

Too bad because your podcast is about all I care to listen too in regards to games. Only podcast I laugh out loud at except maybe Three Red Lights and Scoop.

Guys I have a 2 and 1/2 hour round trip commute each day and 6 more years to do it before I retire. You gotta keep me entertained till then ;-)

Cheapy,

How about some comments on iphone games you've played?

Wombat,

How about no comments on iphone games, unless you've played some?

Wombat you got some 'splaining to do...

Websites have bitten your "bullcrap contest".
I knew Wombat's "contest" would cause a credibility problem for CAG site. There is a unspoken honor among websites. Wombat wanted to prove a point about rumors but at what cost? He may not realize that in this fairly small industry of Game Enthusiast, your street cred is all you got.He could leave many blogs with egg on their face.Trust me Wombat, Bloggers do not like egg on their face.

Wombat this is all your fault! I don't know how, but somehow you are connected to CheapyD quitting CAG in 5 years. God dammit wombat.

Cheapy and Wombat you guys rule. This whole situation is hilarious.

hey everybody this was just announced capcom is going to stop making games for ps3!!! and will only be made for xbox 360 and wii. it is to expensive to make these games for ps3 and the rumor has it that the new resident evil game will only be out for xbox 360 and wii

:bouncy::cool::roll::cry:

Wombat, I would like to congratulate you on your 'contest'. You've made your point, but unfortunately, none of them will learn from it. They all say CAG has lost it's credibility, as if Cheapy is responsible for what the users post (Quick, get the moderators on checking the validity of every post that goes up on CAG). Even so, all of the sites will still post rumors that go up from here in the future, so as to not miss out on "news" or posts. Hopefully this doesn't cause any permanent damage to Cheapy and Wombat's reputation in the gaming community. If it does, that's just sad on the other party's part.

I just check the number of views on that blog too. 17000. Seems like you guys are getting some bonus traffic out of it, and that's always good.

To everyone blowing up about how CAG's credibility for news has now gone out the window because of this experiment:

CAG is a video game deal site. Since when did it need credibility for news?

After reading a few of Crecente's posts about the fake x360 blog post on kotaku....I gotta say bravo CAG. Its such crap how often those mainstream blogs post about rumors which are based on nothing but "from this url".

Great episode and im sure there is a lot to talk about this sunday night...besides football. :X

Kotakowned.

Great job exposing these "news" sites for what they are Cheapy, I hope you upgrade the person who posted that picture to an LE version of whatever game he/she wants!

Thanks for another great show guys! Cheapy, I hope you'll realize that plenty of gamers are middle-aged and that our group will be developing into an expansive demographic not limited by age. I hope than CAG will still be here ten years from now with Cheapy running the show, at least in the background pulling the strings.

Cheapness never gets old.

On another note, as for Viva Pinata, I like the concept of the game, but I stopped playing the first one because of a constant feeling of being overwhelmed. Just too many items to sell before they go bad, or bad pinatas, or fights/unwanted snacks. More dealing with annoyances rather than doing the things I wanted to do, like catching, romancing, or evolving. Maybe the co-op mode in the sequel would go a way toward helping deal with that drowning feeling that comes from the endless set of tasks.

Hey, maybe this is a question was asked (sorry, wasn't...payin attention): what is the song you used in the intro this episode? I liked it and want to find a copy of it.
