CAGcast #145: Farts, Favorites, and Firings

Great show guys. To me personally I loved that shipwreck was in this week's CAGcast. Ship just seems so knowledgeable about games because of the CAG Foreplay podcast, it really adds an extra touch to it. Although I am still a big fan of the CAGplay Forcast, personally I don't find it as humerous as the CAGCast which drops it down a notch for me.

I really liked how you did it system by system and all of you didn't go for games like Fallout 3, or Left 4 Dead, or GTA IV. It doesn't matter if I liked the big releases or not, hearing games like Professor Layton or Saint's Row 2 really gave you guys a lot of credibility in my book. A lot more credibility than most other gaming sites, where each goty list has the same rehashed list. I can really relate to you guys, and that makes you my favorite Video Game podcast (besides CAGForplay, both are excellent). This episode only backed up my feelings why you are my favorite(s) podcasts for video games.

It's not really a CAGcast without an awkward moment, and Cheapy didn't disappoint! Cheapy kept going on and on about anyone wanting to hire a guy who loves playing & talking & writing about videogames should hire RockSolidAudio... meanwhile his two unpaid co-hosts - who fit the same profile - remain silent.

on a related note, shipwreck and wombat still have jobs.

This weeks podcast was a very refreshing look at the best games of the year through the eyes of Cheapy, Wombat, and the Shipwrecks.
I listen to several other podcast and most of the discussion was GTA 4, MGS 4, and Fallout 3 but this was not so on the Cagcast. Some very interesting game choices were made, making for a very interesting and enjoyable "game of the year" show. With this absolutely ingenious format, you guys easily had the best 2008 wrap up show out there. Keep up the fantastic work.

Wombat, it was kinda cold how a couple of shows ago, you plug a game (DC vs Mortal Kombat), talked all good about it, and now you totally throw it on the trash pile. lol Couldn't you have picked another game. I figure you'd be more criitcal of the game because it has chracters you love, as I would be more critical of a game that was about Voltron or Robotech.

Cheapy,

Just to reinforce your point (albeit it about Saints Row 2), I initially thought Saints Row was a bargain bin budget title. It never really interested me. But many CAGcasts ago, you spoke so highly it of it, I figured I'd give it a try. And to my surprise I ended up loving it. It's now one of my favorite 360 games and I liked it more than GTA4.

In an unrelated point, I enjoy Shipwreck on his own show with Mrs. Shipwreck (who sounds like she desperately wants out of the podcast business) but I don't particularly enjoy the chemistry on the CAGcast with a third person. Nothing against Shipwreck personallly, but the show just doesn't seem to flow as well.

No, I don't want out of the podcast business. I just want less stupid games to preview. With our new format of not previewing EVERY GAME (i.e. all the crap), I think the show will be much more enjoyable for all. :D

Thank you Cheapy, Wombat & Shipwreck for not using the :bs: phrase of "Best of" games for your '08 picks! Just as Wombat was anal several episodes ago about the usage of "mediocre" and "average," I am anal about every other pick list from '08 being called a BEST OF list.
For example, Cheapy's pick for his favorite game was Saint's Row 2. How many other "best of" lists would that be on? These are PERSONAL PICKS from individual editors and etc., and thank you guys for calling them as such!
Rant aside, fantastic wrap-up show! The DS or Porn Title game was hilarious, much fun to play along with. And does anyone think the phrase "Bukkake-san" has EVER been used before?
If not there should be a record of it somewhere...

Dang, was looking forward to you guys reading the comments for the last cagcast... how convenient.

ANYWAYS, Shipwreck gained major respect points for this weeks CAGCast. I love how organized he was and that he listed every game you guys played this year (i've always wanted to do that for myself, but it seems like to much work) so it's nice hearing GOTY's that didn't come out last week (all I have been hearing from other Podcasts is "Left 4 Dead"! Great game... but 08 was a year long).

Really well done Shipwreck! You've almost fully recovered from your "I Hate Shipwreck" points (cause of the LBP hate...) I may just start listening to the CAG Foreplay!

And Wombat, way to go man! Totally surprised on your GOTY. That's awesome, I really thought you hated on that game while you were playing it... and at Cheapy's GOTY... come on man...

:whee:

Well, I'm looking forward to hearing the new format.
I got the animation bug where your character gets stuck and doesn't walk - luckily, it spontaneously resolved itself. Had that been a permanent thing, I wouldn't have played another second of the game. I understand what you're getting at!
Oh yeah, I think I remember you mentioning that on the show. I've never run into that one but I can see that as a real pain as well. Unless there's a new patch coming in the near future, I don't really see myself picking it up and trying again, I'm just too frustrated with it.

Go get Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ for the DS. It's $20 and it has zombies! Oh and it doesn't suck. Ship will be jealous.

I agree whole heartedly with Wombat and Shipwreck about Rainbow Six.
Bloody brilliant game and I have also spent many many hours playing Terrorist Hunt. So addictive.

oh... and great show by the way.
Have a great new year!

First cagcast that I've ever listened to twice. The only other podcast that gets this sort of treatment is the smodcast. I could listen to those all day when I'm bored.

i think i said it before, but feel free to skip any games you think isn't worth covering. we want you guys to enjoy what you're doing. feel free to leave the crap in the show notes.
You realize you are arguing with 2008 Douche Bag of the Year award winner, right?
you gonna make him a trophy for that right?!

That's good that you guys changed the format, becuase you've been saying for a long time that you were tired of previewing all the crappy games.

Who would reveiw Stripperz, then?

I can't remember if that's a DS game or a porno.

Actually, Mrs. Ship is right. As much as she hates previewing suck games, I don't really care to listen to to reviews of games I'll never buy. It was kind of entertaining at first with her having to deal with Ponyz, Horsez, Gravediggerz, etc. but I'd listen more to it if it were a shorter show just hitting games that people were likely to buy, DLC stuff, and those sleeper games that are really good but people don't hear about them because they don't have the advertising backing them up. Or even those odd games that may not be on the radar for most folks but the Ships play them and enjoy them.

I'm glad that you took some time to talk about the 1Up/EGM issue. Besides the CAGCast, 1Up Yours and 1Up FM were the only other gaming podcasts that I listened to regularly.

Now that Nick (rocksolidaudio) is out of a job, why don't you guys see if you can get him on the next CAGCast and ask him about the whole situation and the newly formed "Rebel FM" podcast?

Great show and a good way to kick off 2009. Cheapy, Wombat, and Ship make a great podcasting team and I would definitely like to hear more of this team-up. I really dug the way everyone made their pics for their top games of 2008. It was awesome to see Rainbow 6 Vegas and the Williams Pinball Collection get some love.

Porno or DS Game was a good laugh and well done.

Wombat, how could you recommend the Player One podcast? I gave their latest episode a try and I almost fell asleep at the half-way point. I've never heard anything so dry, boring, and awkward in all of my life.

Maybe you and Cheapy have me spoiled, but I did not find Player One entertaining at all.

Thank God for CAG - you guys had a great show as always. Thanks.

I personally do not see how Cheapy could badmouth the story in GTA IV when the Story in SR2 isn't any better. The Characters and story are not compelling? What? What the fuck is Sr2? The story of a possiblle British, Black or hispanic male/female who constantly gets referred to as having gotten a haircut trying to get revenge, money, power and respect? Sounds like GTA IV to me. I Have saints Row 2 thanks to Goozex and am glad I did not pay a penny for it. I have no idea how SR2 is more fun with those hideous controls and horrid buggy gameplay. I agree with Wombat (check it! I'm giving you attention bro wooo :p) regarding the freezing (both on ps3 and the copy i rented for the 360). To me SR2 is the most dissapionting game of the year (other than everything for the wii) because of its shitty controls and I do not see how a game with shit controls is more fun than a game with less shitty controls.

I guess the comparison is objective and you're either going to love one or the other but I think there was worse games that were more dissapointing than GTA IV. However you were dead on with Too Human.. as well as some of your other pics. I just think that none of your reasons for choosing GTA IV as the most dissapointing game.

On the other hand I personally think that "Top pics" threads, articles or podcasts are essentially a bad idea. Not that I don't appreciate the time and effort it took for everyone to compile them. However, much like religion it causes more bad than good. Because it's always going to piss someone else off while another will be delighted by it, causing these two forces to collide. I noticed that on Joystiq's (or for that matter the whole Joystiq network's sites ie the fanboy) sites in the comments threads which at times become a total battle ground between fanboys. In my case, I know what games I liked last year as they are sitting on my shelf and on my consoles' respective hard drives. The rest went out the door with Goozex.

On the other hand Imma go jump on the hypcrite train (where everyone else is) and make my own picks of 2008 in the same style as shipwreck posted them. Thanks for a great show guys and I TOTALLY love the Cheapy, shipwreck and Wombat combo.... also the high elvel of F bombs was awesome... it actually felt like I was listening to a podcast with New Yoaark'ers on it. Lol. Keep up the great work and please throw in Mrs. Shipwreck in there one time that would we AWESOME!... like a once a month thing or once every 3 months.

I listened to some of the show again last night, I loved the bit when Cheapy was laughing while Ship was reading out his game completed list.

With Episode 145 (and with pretty much every episode), we are once again reminded of CheapyD's apparent boner for the XBox 360.

Give it a rest, fanboys. If CheapyD really has such a stiffy for the 360, I'm sure he'd have given mention to the growing number of "CAG Function" 360 threads on the forums.

But guess what? I've yet to hear a shout out to the CAG Grifball Teams. With Cheap Ass Gamer going into its 3rd season, ranked 18th overall in the league (out of 483 teams), currently 6-0 in its division this season. Or how about the newly formed Cheap Ass Giraffes, holding a respectable 3-1 record in their division.

There's yet to be a mention of the CAG 360 Game Lending Circle, a program amongst CAG forum members to lend and borrow 360 games from other CAGs, potentially saving them $50-60 per game! Times are tough, spare cash is hard to come by, and not everyone can trade away enough games for a new copy of Fallout 3, or even find someone willing to do so. Despite this, the GLC helps fellow CAGs partner up and play games they otherwise would not have access to. The generosity of the forums at its finest (second only to the CAG Child's Play effort and the Games for Soldiers drive).

Or how about SynGamer's thread about 360 Game Install Sizes/Performances Listing. His thread on the effectiveness on installing a 360 game to the system hard drive has gotten notices on Kotaku and a few other blogs, in addition to being stickied on a few gaming forums, including CAG. Yet, not a single CAGCast mention.

There's a lot going on in the CAG 360 forum, events and programs created by CAGs for CAGs. From numerous gaming groups to charity and information groups, the forum is constantly busy and gaining notoriety throughout the interwebs, all of it right under CheapyD's nose. I'm sure if he was the big fanboy you claim him to be, these programs and many more would be getting plugged each week on the CAGCast.

But guess what? They've gotten none. Which ironically enough is the same amount that the PS3 and Wii gets.

Really good show guys, I liked the picks of the year. As near as I can figure out, I'm some weird conglomerate of all 4 of you (including mrs. ship, obviously), because over the categories, I was divided pretty evenly.

Sorry to hear about the UGO stuff, Wombat, but it sounds like it was all done amicably and that there may be potential in the future, and that's probably the best way it could have ended. I see a lot of people really upset by the news here on CAG, but listening to you talk about it, it doesn't sound nearly as bad as those would make it out to be.

Anyway, happy new year to the CAGCast and CAG Foreplay crews, looking forward to the 2009 shows! :)

Shipwreck and his spreadsheet. Engineers reprezent!

I like that the game picks of the year are subjective. I don't want an objective review of each game; I like to hear individual takes on them. I listen to the CAGCast because there's personality behind the discussion and reviews. If I want a (more or less) objective opinion of a game, there are any number of other sites to go to.

Thanks Cheapy Pornhub rocks lol. I have to disagree with Wombat with Saints Row. I took Cheapys advice and got it and love it. The story is funny as hell and the game is just so much fun to play. I have played about 30 hours already and cant wait to co op and beat the game again. Another great Cagcast keep it up.

I know this isn't a popular opinion but I think Ship talks in a monotone that puts me to sleep and hope he's not a CAGcast regular. He has a few good points but his delivery kills the mood that Cheapy and Wombat usually have going.

I completely disagree -- listen again -- Ship had some really very funny one liners and digs in this episode...he slipped them in there almost unnoticed. It was a fun episode -- lots of "adult" references --- were you guys trying to freak out Ship -- definately not a G rated podcast!

I don't get why the fanboys keep harping on Cheapy's love for the 360. I have all three consoles, and my 360 gets far more use than the PS3 and the Wii. The PS3 is used as a BluRay player and well, the Wii can go for months without being used. The 360 and PS3 are very close. I personally think the PS3 is a great deal because as a BluRay player, it gets terrific reviews. However, because of Xbox Live, the 360 is most likely the system of choice for the die hard gamer. That's not to say the PS3 isn't a great machine, it is and no red rings of death either, but Live and the Achievement system and now streaming Netflix gives the 360 an edge in this gamer's opinion.

Always a fun listen -- thanks guys!

Must say that I was surprised by this podcast. Only thing I have to complain about this week is that Wombat seemed to have dodged his favorite Sony story for the year with his game he made up. Also, FYI Babysitters is available in full HD 1080p via Blu-Ray Disc, that way you can see the razor burns:drool:. You should have made this a special, many things where cut out that you usually have in the Podcast. Still good though.
Good listen so far. I like shipwreck. maybe experiment with that if he wants to.
That just sounds creepy...

Maybe I should have articulated that as a reason why I quit listning to CAG Foreplay as another reason. I do not see Shipwreck going for it, he seems to have a very meticulous personality or even some kind of O.C.D. that makes hime want to go into extreme detail about things no one cares about.
I know this isn't a popular opinion but I think Ship talks in a monotone that puts me to sleep and hope he's not a CAGcast regular. He has a few good points but his delivery kills the mood that Cheapy and Wombat usually have going.
I agree with you that he puts me to sleep, but after thinking about it I just realized I knew what he was saying and it may be interesting to people who are unfamiliar with what he is saying. But saying that is brave and bold and you will probably get flamed for it.

Gentlemen,

You know I love you all, and appreciate your efforts, but the last CAGcast reminded me why I get my news online instead of receiving it via a television program.

After taking in all the "We Play Favorites" visual data via Ship's fantastic chart, (in about 60 seconds or so) listening to the information verbally (and redundantly) wasn't exactly thrilling. Yes, part of that is my fault for listening to the CAGcast a few days after it's release, but like many listeners I have a busy schedule. Sure, there were a few brief explanations about individual picks, but not enough to make the segment compelling to those that had already seen the chart.

With the exception of the 1up/EGM closure, the first 25 minutes of the show were rehashing the events of previous shows- like those awful sitcom episodes when they would create a new show out of moments from previous programs. I may be in the minority, but the 'meat' of the CAGcast is the game discussion. Lately, it's taken a while to get to that segment. How about a move towards a hook? Guys, mention part of a story or game, and then finish that discussion later in the show. Create some dramatic tension!

Just a bit of constructive criticism; thank you Wombat, Cheapy & Ship for your efforts!

Oh, and did anyone play de Blob? A great wii game that got overlooked. Any Katamari fan should check it out!

But, then again, what is the point of the CAGcast -- I listen because they talk about games, game deals, and lots of other stuff, which is typically very funny. This is not the videogames podcast for someone if they are looking solely for games discussion, IMHO. Ship plays a lot of games, but Wombat and Cheapy do not play everything. Why should they? They are not full-time, professional game reviewers -- they have other careers, family responsibilites, etc. If the point goal of the CAGcast is to be a fun, informative, interesting listen, I think they go 3 for 3!

I agree. Well, actually, I don't even have a 360 (anymore... ), I play Wii and PS3 exclusively. I don't really care if they review multi-platform games on the 360 or the PS3. I don't really care about the differences between the consoles too much, and so hearing someone's take on a game played on the 360 doesn't matter to me. Also, I don't feel like they are biased against PS3 exclusives. Even if they were, I don't think I would really care. I mean, it's their opinion, which is why I listen. If their opinions pissed me off that much, I just wouldn't listen.

Cheapy prefers his 360, but I don't think he's a true fanboy of the 360. He may be a little biased, but hell so would I, if I had to record a Podcast about all three systems, and I'm sure every other show I'd take some cheap shots at the 360. I like Cheapy, Wombat, and Ships opinion and enjoy the interaction that we all have with the hosts. Its not just them talking, and us listening, but rather more of a weekly conversation.

I was hesitant to post this - even I think of myself as a dickhead for having these thoughts - but I hope Shipwreck stays off the CAGcast in the future, if it can be helped.

He may be way knowledgeable about games and a nice enough guy but I think the problem is that he stifles any of the fun that happens in the podcast, especially between Wombat and Cheapy. He never laughs along, or adds his own jokes; he seems like he doesn't know how to have fun in a group dynamic. He should learn to lighten up because at best, he adds nothing, at worst, he drives down the fun of the podcast.

After listening to a few episodes of CAG Foreplay, I see it's a problem over there too. He's just not got a great sense of humour, and due to, I suspect, a heavy influence of Christianity, he can't get involved in jokes about porn sites or whatever else Cheapy and Wombat throw in for laughs as they usually do. It's a real shame.

Still, he's harmless enough and I'll still listen even if he becomes a full-time part of the CAGcast! My love for what you guys do is too great for me to walk away now.
